Introducing: Mother Earth Brewing’s Long Weekend IPA

August 24, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Have you heard the news? Mother Earth Brewing’s Oatmeal IPA is now Long Weekend IPA! The same great brew you’ve enjoyed all year long is now proudly one of our year-round beers and can be found under it’s new name, Long Weekend IPA. Whether you’re sitting around a bonfire with friends, hitting the beach, or hiking your favorite trail, Long Weekend is the perfect addition to extra hours and a surplus of sunshine. Brewed with a generous portion of flaked oats that provide a creamy, velvet-like mouthfeel, this IPA takes nearly all of its hops (Chinook, Mosaic and Citra) as late additions and dry hops during fermentation, resulting in big aromas and flavors of grapefruit and cantaloupe with very little bitterness. Find it on tap and in your favorite bottle shops state-wide in North Carolina!

Beer Style
Oatmeal IPA

Our Brew Master Says…
“Intentionally low in bitterness, high in residual sweetness and packed with late addition Citra and Mosaic hops. The central aim was to create an accessible IPA for traditionally non-IPA drinkers. Expect a melon/citrus fruit bomb.”

Food Pairings
Fish Tacos, Goat Cheese, Oysters , Delicate White Fish (Sole, Cod etc.), Pesto

ABV
6.5%

‘That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It’ returns for Season Two with Dogfish Head’s Sam Calagione

August 24, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since we teamed up with our pals at First We Feast to bring a whole new series to life that bridged indie craft beer and pop culture into a seemingly entertaining (and educational) experience.

‘That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It’ captures my quest to share off-centered and innovative brews with fellow creatives who are known to think (and drink) outside the box. In each episode of this six-part series, watch as I take new friends through a full-on sensory adventure of sorts as we taste and talk about beer. From dropping taste-bud changing pills to alter the flavor profile of a sour Belgian ale, to dropping science on the brewing process over a beer made with dragon fruit and yumberries, to a hot pepper mixing party extravaganza, we’ll explore all that’s possible (and impossible) over off-kilter brews.

With new episodes available every Tuesday (the first one has almost 500K views!), I hope you’ll join us on this journey of culinary ingredient experimentation and limitless imagination!

Gluten Free Ghostfish Beer Available in Colorado

August 24, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Seattle, Washington – Ghostfish Brewing Company is excited to announce a new distribution partnership with Crooked Stave Artisans Distributing. This relationship will facilitate Ghostfish beer to be available within nearly all areas within the state of Colorado.

Crooked Stave Artisans Distributing (CSA) will start off distributing draught and package versions of Ghostfish Brewing’s award-winning dedicated gluten-free beers including Grapefruit IPA, Meteor Shower Blonde Ale, and Shrouded Summit Belgian White Ale, as well as seasonal and limited releases as they are available.

“We’re thrilled to be working with such a prestigious company such as CSA. Their reach within Colorado was an important factor, but it was their finely curated portfolio and positive reputation in the beer savvy Colorado market that attracted us the most to them. They have a great sales team, service the majority of the state, and their craft beer knowledge is second to none in Colorado.,” said co-owner and Director of Sales & Marketing, Brian Thiel.

“From the moment we first tasted the Grapefruit IPA and Shrouded Summit White Ale, we knew Ghostfish had achieved something exceptional with their approach to gluten free beer. The Ghostfish team are committed to making great beer for all beer drinkers. Their creativity and innovation are pushing the boundaries of craft beer with their use of unconventional grains, and we are truly excited to partner with them here in Colorado.,” said CSA Brand Manager, Alan Stone.

This move represents an interesting homecoming for Ghostfish Brewing as the majority of owners have strong personal ties to Colorado and a significant percentage of brewing malts originated as grains grown by Colorado farmers.

“We can’t claim to be local, but “Colorado-based DNA” is prevalent in Ghostfish beers. The majority of ownership in Ghostfish has lived previously or currently has residency in Colorado. Perhaps the most compelling story is the fact that a large portion of the grains we use to produce our beer our grown and malted/roasted in Colorado then shipped and crafted into artisanal beers in Seattle and now sent back in finished packages for consumers to enjoy throughout Colorado.,” said Thiel.

Randy Schroeder, Ghostfish co-owner and Director of Operations has spent most of his life living in the mountains of Colorado between Golden and Evergreen. “I’ve spent by far the majority of my years there. It still holds a big piece of my heart, along with dozens of friends and family. The opportunity to partner with CSA to bring our craft product to a place I still think of as home feels amazing, and it provide even more reasons to return!”

With the addition of the Colorado market, Ghostfish beers are now available within eight U.S. states in addition to the Canadian province of British Columbia.

About Ghostfish Brewing Company

AleSmith Brewing Releases Speedway Stout and Old Numbskull in Custom 2-Packs

August 24, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

SAN DIEGO — AleSmith Brewing Company is offering a new way to enjoy the classic European-style brewery’s barrel-aged beers. To make these popular styles more accessible to the casual imbiber, they recently released a new Cinnamon Vanilla Barrel-Aged Speedway Stout and already popular Barrel-Aged Old Numbskull in 330 ml (11.2 oz) bottles. Packaged in custom “Barrel-Aged Release” two-packs, these higher ABV beers can be enjoyed more easily by an individual consumer as compared to the traditional 750 ml bottles that AleSmith has provided in past years.

The Cinnamon Vanilla Barrel-Aged Speedway Stout, with its 13% ABV, is a blend of two different versions of AleSmith’s award-winning Speedway Stout, each going through its own unique aging process. The first part of the blend was aged in American oak bourbon barrels; the second part of the blend was aged in bourbon barrels that had previously held cinnamon and vanilla extract. After aging, these two parts were blended and aged again with vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks and given a dosing of locally roasted coffee. The effect is a full-bodied brew with complex notes of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and cinnamon.

A staple of the traditional AleSmith barrel-aged lineup, 12% ABV Barrel-Aged Old Numbskull, has also been bottled in the updated design. This bourbon barrel-aged variation of their classic barleywine went through a lengthy aging process in freshly used American oak bourbon barrels. The resulting malty brew boasts notes of caramel, toffee, vanilla, coconut, and oak.

When asked about the motivation for the reduced bottle size, AleSmith Owner, Peter Zien remarked, “For years, fans of our Barrel-Aged beer program have enjoyed our offerings in the large 750ml (25.4 oz.) glass bottle format. This size was ideal for cellaring beer and sharing with friends but could be intimidating for single serve use. I’m very excited to see our two newest Barrel-Aged offerings in user-friendly 330ml (11.2 oz.) glass bottles. You can now purchase the Barrel-Aged Cinnamon Vanilla Speedway Stout and the 2018 Barrel-Aged Old Numbskull in beautifully decorated gift boxes consisting of 2 bottles of each or mixed 2-packs.”

Limited quantities of these 330 ml (11.2 oz) releases are available for purchase in mix and match packs of two only at the brewery. Visit http://www.alesmith.com/specialtyreleases for information on all current AleSmith limited time offerings.

About AleSmith Brewing Company
Forged in 1995, AleSmith has been recognized by consumers and critics alike as one of the world’s foremost craft brewing companies behind accolades that include medals won at prestigious national and international beer competitions. In addition to being well established within its hometown of San Diego, AleSmith was acknowledged by the RateBeer community as the Top Brewer in California and the 4th Best Brewery in the World in 2017. AleSmith is celebrating its 23rd year in business and occupies a 109,942 square-foot facility with a state-of- the-art brewery. Pelican Brewing to Release Captain of the Coast Wee Heavy Ale

August 24, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

PACIFIC CITY, Ore. — Oh Captain! My Captain! Pelican Brewing Company welcomes back its barrel-aged triumph Captain of the Coast as it returns to port next weekend on Saturday, August 25th. Pelican’s celebrated Wee Heavy Ale aged in Dry Fly Wheat Whiskey Barrels took top honors this year at the 2018 Australian International Beer Awards.

The limited-production Captain of the Coast, which will be available this month in 22 oz. bottles and on draft at select locations, is available now for pre-order online. The Captain will be available for pick-up at Pelican brewpubs in Pacific City, Cannon Beach and Tillamook next weekend starting Saturday, August 25th, and in specialty bottle shops the week of August 27th.  For those fanatics who would like Captain shipped directly, Pelican can ship to select US States. Supplies are limited.

For this commanding version of MacPelican’s Wee Heavy Pelican took its award winning Wee Heavy and laid it down in Washington Wheat Whiskey barrels from Dry Fly Distilling in Spokane. What emerged was recognizably Wee Heavy, but with added notes of chocolate covered cherries, toasted oak, spice and vanilla in the aroma. The first sip produces flavors reminiscent of malted milk balls and crème brûlée with a silky-smooth mouthfeel. Continue on the voyage and you’ll find dried apricots, sherry-like flavors, and dark marmalade.

The Captain welcomes you aboard to sample his recipe that combines Golden Promise malt, light and dark crystal malts, flaked barley, Willamette hops, Magnum hops, pure local water, and pure ale yeast:

ABV: 9.5%  |  IBU: 25  |  PLATO: 22º

“We have had a blast creating this series of beers that take on the flavor of aged wood barrels and the character of their previous tenants—last year’s release of Captain sold out so quickly that we vowed to make a bigger batch this year in hopes of sharing with more of our barrel-aged beer fans,” said Darron Welch, founding master brewer at Pelican Brewing Company.

Welch continues to be one of the most decorated brewers in the Pacific Northwest, earning well over 450 medals including several Gold Medals this year alone at the World Beer Cup, Australian International Beer Awards and North American Beer Awards.

With a nod to the popularity of Pelican’s original barrel-aged masterpiece Mother of All Storms, English-style Barleywine aged in Bourbon Barrels, the brewery continues its vision for creating recipes that combine beer, spirits and barrel flavors. Fellow fanatics of Pelican’s barrel-aged series have more tasty collectables ahead with quarterly releases of Captain, Queen of Hearts, Father of all Tsunamis and the annual return of ‘Mother’ this fall.

Like all Pelican beers, Captain of the Coast is born at the beach by a team of award-winning craft beer makers known for brewing styles of beer that they themselves love to drink. Cheers!

New Holland Brewing Rebrands Dragon’s Milk Stout

August 24, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., — Seventeen years after introducing its legendary Dragon’s Milk Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout to fans around the country, New Holland Brewing Company, an artisan craft brewer based in Holland, Mich., is introducing a dramatic new look for their flagship recipe. To celebrate the re-brand, the company is also releasing a never-before tasted brew: Dragon’s Milk Reserve – Banana Coconut.

“Synonymous with its name, Dragon’s Milk has become its own legend and we’re proud of its heritage as the best liquid in our house,” said Brett VanderKamp, President of New Holland Brewing Company. “We are passionate about the stout’s full, warming and rich blend comprising roasted malt characteristics complemented by smooth vanilla and oak flavors. Our new packaging aims to celebrate the complexity of the beer while paying tribute to its bold, rich undertones.”

New Branding Hits Shelves Fall 2018
Recognized for creativity and artistry, New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk stout exemplifies the brewery’s commitment to craftmanship. The stout boasts flavorful, rich, robust characteristics that lend themselves to unique seasonal flavor combinations. The updated packaging, retail elements and branded merchandise will shift to a premium all-black base, allowing the hallmark dragon emblem to serve as the visual focus in place of the brewery’s own logo. Gradient dragon scales provide a nod to the stout’s name while mimicking the way foam dissipates in the glass when poured.

Dragon’s Milk also receives a dedicated website and Instagram profile in tandem with the rebranding at www.DragonsMilk.com and @DragonsMilkStout.

Dragon’s Milk Reserve – Banana Coconut
Available in September and bringing the traditional roasted, malty and smooth characteristics of Dragon’s Milk, Banana Coconut features hints of real banana, plantain and coconut delivered in a creamy, rich bourbon barrel-aged stout. 11% alcohol, 30IBU.

Malts: 2-row, Munich, Caramel, Flaked Barley, Chocolate, Black and Honey

Hops: Nugget, Brewer’s Gold

Dragon’s Milk Reserve – Banana Coconut is available until sold out and is released on draft and in single 12-ounce bottles, 4-packs of 12-ounce bottles and 24-pack cases of 12-ounce bottles.

For more information on Dragon’s Milk Reserve and new packaging, review New Holland’s photos and video.

VENICE DUCK BREWERY TO RELEASE 3 BRANDS IN 6-PACK CANS

August 23, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

VENICE, Calif. — Venice Duck Brewery today announced the expansion of its can distribution throughout Southern California, in a move that puts Venice Beach craft beer on the map. Venice Duck beers can now be found in 300 locations in Southern California in restaurants and bars. With the distribution power of Southern Glazer Wine & Spirits Venice Duck Brewery is in a strong position to dominate local liquor stores and grocery chains.

Venice Duck Brewery founders, John Binder and Christian Warren are two local bartenders from Venice Beach who wanted to make their mark with an IPA that boasts complex taste and flavor. The company was inspired by a local legend of a guy who went to a party in the Venice Canals and woke up the next day on the sidewalk covered with ducks. The iconic canal ducks along with the unique and diverse culture of Venice Beach is represented in each of Venice Duck Brewery’s carefully crafted brews. The pair launched their first brew, Dogtown Duck in October 2013.

The current Venice Duck Brewery portfolio includes:

• Dogtown Duck – a West Coast IPA with a robust blend of Citra, Simcoe and Zythos hops

• Stoner Duck – an easy drinking nut brown ale with organic hemp and a backbone of caramel, toasted malts, chocolate and American hops

• Lucky Duck – a refreshing blond ale enriched with agave nectar and hops, brewed with German malts

“We have built a presence in Southern California in a short period of time with little to no marketing and purely for the love of making really good beer,” said Binder. “There is an organic demand for well-crafted brews and the quality of Venice Duck beer speaks for itself.”

“Venice Beach is one of the world’s top destinations and we felt it deserved a brand of local beer that accurately reflects its complex and eccentric personality,” added Warren. “It is difficult to capture the magic and essence of this town in any singular element, but we believe we’ve done it and will continue to do so with soon-to-come future releases.”

The flock of Venice Duck beers is served locally at popular haunts such as James Beach, The Canal Club and Rock n Brews as well as Killer Shrimp, Cheesecake Factory and Melody Bar & Grill.

About Venice Duck Brewery
