Heavy Seas Announces Limited Release Beer: BMORE SNOBALL, Egg Custard Blonde

July 17, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

BALTIMORE, MD – Heavy Seas Beer is excited to announce the fifth release from its 15 Barrel Brewhouse in 2019, Bmore Snoball, an Egg Custard Blonde Ale. This beer will be exclusively available in the Heavy Seas Taproom at the brewery on Friday, July 26, 2019 in 4 packs of 16oz cans and on draft.

Egg Custard is the original snoball flavor of Baltimore that was introduced when ice was first made available for commercial use during the Industrial Revolution. Northeastern states would send blocks of ice to southern states like Florida, and their route would pass right though Baltimore. During the humid summers, children started to ask for shavings of the ice to cool them off. Their mothers then decided to start making syrups to flavor the ice by using a recipe of vanilla, sugar, and eggs. Today, the flavor is just named Egg Custard and is simply a golden colored vanilla syrup (it does not taste like eggs).

“We used imported, nutty Maris Otter Pale malt as the base for this Blonde Ale inspired by the classic Baltimore summer treat,” says Heavy Seas Brewmaster, Christopher Leonard. “A touch of Munich Malt provides a hint of bready character to go with a whisper of Strisselspalt hops. To replicate the Egg Custard Snoball flavor, we’ve added vanilla (LOTS of vanilla!) and just a touch of nutmeg and cinnamon. The result is a beer with a comforting aroma, a sweet dessert-like start and a surprisingly soft finish.”

Style: Blonde Ale brewed with vanilla and spice ABV: 5.5% IBU: 4

The Bmore Snoball label artwork was designed by local Baltimore artist, Owen Murphy, of One Drop Design Studio. All the taproom exclusive beer labels will be designed by Owen in 2019.

Everybody’s Brewing Releases Stir It Up Hazy IPA and Green Ice Pilsner

July 17, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

WHITE SALMON, Wash. — Everybody’s Brewing announced the release of their first 16 oz. cans: Stir It Up Hazy IPA and Green Ice Pilsner. They have three release events scheduled for local markets: Portland at Belmont Station on July 10, Vancouver at Northwest Liquid Gold on July 11, and Hood River at Volcanic Bottle Shop on July 12.

These will be the first in a new line of rotating 16 oz. cans. The brewery plans to release two new cans quarterly. Owner Doug Ellenberger said: “The rotating cans will give us a chance to showcase some of our favorite beers. They also gives us a chance to step outside the box a little with our branding. We’ll be doing short runs of each style, so we are going to have some have fun with the artwork.”

Stir It Up Hazy IPA is 7.1% ABV, 30 IBUs, and pours a light yellow with a white meringue head and lacing. It’s hopped with Cashmere, Strata, and Motu. Head brewer Adam McClure, said this recipe was designed for the summer. “It’s got a nice light body by design. It’s hazy and smooth, from just a touch of wheat and oats. We wanted the hop blend to shine through.”

Green Ice Pilsner is crisp and light. It has touch of Northwest hops on top of Weyermann Premium Malt. “We ferment it long and cold,” said McClure. “Everyone that works in the brewery is really proud of this beer, so we’re happy to get it in front of a larger audience with the cans.”

Firestone Walker Releases Old Man Hattan

July 16, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

PASO ROBLES, Calif. — Get ready for the inaugural release of Old Man Hattan—an eccentric barrel-aged mashup of two classic cocktails: the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan.

First conceived last year as a brewery-only Black Friday limited release, Old Man Hattan now makes its debut as one of only six Proprietor’s Vintage releases for 2019. It begins rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets this week in individually boxed 12-ounce bottles.

The base beer of Old Man Hattan is a blend of signature Firestone Walker component beers, including Velvet Merkin, Bravo and Stickee Monkee aged in whiskey barrels. The twist comes from select lots of Parabola and Helldorado that were aged in barrels previously used to mature cherry, orange and aromatic bitters.

The result is a barnstorming beer that exhibits pronounced whiskey notes while artfully expressing essences of both the Old Fashioned and the Manhattan cocktails.

“Old Man Hattan is really true to its dual influences,” said Eric Ponce, Firestone Walker’s barrel program manager. “On the nose, you get hints of cherry, orange and clove spice. It’s extremely smooth and drinkable, with traditional whiskey characters of tobacco and bitter chocolate.”

As a cocktail enthusiast, Ponce had been toying with idea of Old Man Hattan for years. But since many bitters are made in stainless steel tanks, bitters barrels are hard to come by—which is why it took time for the idea to come to fruition.

Lightning finally struck when Ponce gained access to barrels retired from an artisan bitters program. “These bitters barrels are beautifully potent,” he said. “We really played around with the different component beers and barrel ratios to get everything just right.”

He added, “If you’re a fan of the Old Fashioned, Manhattan or other whiskey-based cocktails, you’re going to love this beer.”

About Firestone Walker Brewing Company
Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a pioneering regional craft brewery founded in 1996 and located on the coast of California. Firestone Walker’s main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. The Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers and limited local offerings. Oskar Blues Releases Steep Coast Zappa Double IPA

July 16, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

LONGMONT, Colo. — Oskar Blues Brewery continues the Steep Coast Mountain IPA Series with Steep Coast Zappa Double IPA. The series spotlights one hop varietal at a time, focusing on cutting-edge hops added in hefty heaps (nearly six pounds of hops per barrel) to each given brew. Steep Coast Zappa DIPA (8.0% ABV) will be available on draft and in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans in Oskar Blues Taprooms in Longmont and Boulder, CO, and in select markets starting mid-July.

Zappa hops belong to the subspecies Neomexicanus – a group of distinctly American hops native to the dry mountainous region of New Mexico. Steep Coast Zappa DIPA celebrates non-conformity, loudly expressing the lemon and white pepper flavors of these boisterous hops. Frankly, Zappa IPA is as complex and provocative as its musical namesake. Two other varietals of Neomexicanus – Medusa and Sabro – are used in small amounts to support Zappa’s wild, boisterous character.

So what makes Steep Coast Zappa DIPA a “Mountain” style IPA? “It’s a blending of the distinctive styles of West and East Coast IPAs,” said Tim Matthews, head of brewing operations for Oskar Blues. “It doesn’t have the pallet-wrecker bitterness of an old school West Coast IPA, nor the fluffy bitterness of the New England – it’s definitely somewhere in-between. We targeted the hop load of a New England but the palatability of the West Coast style.”

The series exhibits a wide spectrum of hop flavors, with the goal of diversifying the craft beer lover’s Double IPA experience. Southern Passion and Enigma variations will appear in the rotating Steep Coast Mountain IPA Series later this year. Find Steep Coast Zappa DIPA near you via the beerfinder.

Unibroue Flagship La Fin du Monde Celebrates 25 Years of Success

July 15, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

North America (July 15, 2019) – The renowned La Fin du Monde, Unibroue’s flagship Tripel ale, celebrates its 25th year with the distinction of being the most awarded beer in Canada.

To date, it has won 55 medals and honors from top international competitions, including 13 platinum distinctions and 29 golds at prestigious events such as the Chicago Beverage Testing Institute’s World Beer Championships and the World Beer Awards.

First brewed in February 1994, it took 18 months of research before La Fin du Monde saw the light of day. Representative of a style that was originally developed by medieval monks for special occasions, it is a premium beer with a surprising finesse, brewed and refermented in the bottle – a first in the American market at the time of launch. True to tradition, Unibroue brewed this beer in honor of the French explorers who, when they discovered North America, believed they had reached “the end of the world.”

“La Fin du Monde is our flagship brand” says Jerry Vietz, Brewmaster for Unibroue. “With this beer alone, we have won 55 international medals, including 2 prestigious awards at the World Beer Awards in London, England, where it received the title of ‘World’s Best Belgian Style Tripel.’”

La Fin du Monde pours a hazy golden hue with a cloudlike halo of creamy white foam sealing in a floral bouquet mixed with notes of fresh baguette, spice, honey, coriander, malt and alcohol warmth.

Every sip greets the palate with a harmonious mélange of coriander, candied orange peel, lemon, black pepper and bananas, framed by a subtly spicy hop backbone and alcohol warmth. Truly a perfect balance of sugar, acidity, bitterness, spice and alcohol.

Like good wine, La Fin du Monde’s flavors develop with age, becoming smoother over time, revealing notes of honey and candied fruit and developing a more assertive and lasting flavor. This phenomenon is known as “maderization” and is similar to the aging process of dessert wines like port.

To age, store bottles upright in a cool dark place at a stable temperature between 46°F and 61°F. The yeast added to each La Fin du Monde bottle triggers natural fermentation, consuming excess oxygen and preventing the beer’s CO2 from oxidizing. This bottle fermentation combined with the higher alcohol content in La Fin du Monde act as natural preservatives, ensuring you can enjoy it for years to come.
