George Washington’s Bar Tab – $20,013 – Celebrating the Writing of the U.S. Constitution

July 5, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

On September 15, 1787, George Washington had many reasons to celebrate. A few months earlier, in May, he was elected president at the Constitutional Convention. The United States Constitution had just been finalized and debates were finally settling as the momentous document cruised towards its eventual signing, just two days later. This night was also the farewell dinner for Washington before he set off George Washington's Bar Tabto do bigger and better things.

George Washington and his Army buddies celebrated by drinking enough booze to rack up a tab worth roughly $20,013 in today’s currency.

George Washington’s Bar Tab:
54 bottles of Madeira
60 bottles of claret
22 bottles of porter
12 bottles of beer
8 bottles of hard cider
8 bottles of Old Stock (a.k.a. colonial whiskey)
7 large bowls of spiked punch

Melvin Brewing Launches Back In Da Haze Hazy IPA

July 3, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Melvin Brewing Launches Back In Da Haze Hazy IPA

ALPINE, Wy. — Melvin Brewing is in a groove. An ‘80s-style groove reminiscent of “bring your own cardboard break dancing” to boom boxes on the sidewalk. Only this time it’s a bit hazier and in a can. Back in Da Haze (6.5% ABV and 58 IBUS) drinks like a tropical dreamsicle with hints of pineapple, coconut, and the whole family of island fruits.

Look for Back in Da Haze in 12 ounce six packs, 16 ounce four packs and single 19.2 ounce cans starting Aug. 1 at independent retailers in WY; WA; AK; MT; ID; OR; CA; NV; CO; NE; SD; MA; VT; RI; PA; TX; UT; VA; and Washington, D.C.

Back in Da Haze is an offshoot of Melvin’s ExperiMENTAL series of diverse, cutting-edge beers and features another one of Melvin’s signature can designs by Kelly Halpin.

Melvin Founder Jeremy Tofte gets a little misty-eyed talking about the origins of Back in Da Haze: “Back in da haze of the Thai Me Up (original brewery) days, we were dropping fresh loads of hops into our beers after the boil, and even more in the fermenter. People thought we were crazy: Why would you waste so much money and hops?! Turns out we were making beer from the future. Now they call it ‘cold pooling’ and DDH.”

Times have certainly changed but Melvin is still blasting IPA’s with juicy flavors for the hopheads, now with a bit more haze. Melvin started recipe development for Back in Da Haze with its now-famous Me, Myself & Thai, a New England-style IPA that received a 99 percent rating from Craft Beer & Brewing.

“We decided to tone it down just a touch, and laid down this crushable groove with Sabro, Citra and Mosaic hops, bringing tropical dreamsicle flavors to keep your taste buds dancing,” Tofte says.

In conjunction with the roll out of Back in Da Haze, Melvin is releasing a new line of Back in Da Haze merchandise through its shop and Text-to-Win sweepstakes galore. Look for opportunities to win great prizes like custom coolers from Rovr and your new favorite pair of retro shades from Pit Viper and with custom party shirts in collaboration with Party Shirts International.

About Melvin Brewing
Melvin Brewing was born in the back of a Thai restaurant in 2009, when founder Jeremy Tofte decided to bring beers from the future to Jackson, WY. A 20-gallon brew system quickly grew into a 3-barrel system, and award-winning beers like Melvin IPA, 2×4 Double IPA and Ch-Ch-Cherry Bomb were served alongside Asian street food, classic kung fu films and old school hip-hop. After winning Small Brewpub of the Year at Great American Beer Festival in 2015, a 30-barrel production facility was opened in Alpine, WY, population 750. Shortly thereafter, Melvin started shipping beer across the U.S. and went on to win Brewery Group of the Year at GABF in 2017. Embracing the chaos and riding the wave, Melvin Brewing is now ready to take its world class beers on a worldwide tour.

Biscayne Bay Brewing Company and Miami Marlins Release Marlins Lager

July 3, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Biscayne Bay Brewing Company and Miami Marlins Release Marlins Lager

MIAMI – Summer is here, and the Miami Marlins are teaming with local brewer Biscayne Bay Brewing Company to craft something special. Now stepping into the batter’s box is the Marlins Lager, a crisp and light-bodied lager beer that is the ideal teammate for baseball on a summer day.

The Marlins Lager is a traditional German-style lager. It has deliciously soft, malty notes, low bitterness, noble hop aromas and a crisp clean finish. This beer pairs well with your favorite grilled eats or ballpark snacks. Fans can get the new Marlins Lager at select Publix, Winn-Dixie, Milam’s Market, Total Wine & More, and Whole Foods locations for the upcoming start of the baseball season.

“With the start of the 2020 season around the corner, we are excited to bring the Marlins Lager to the South Florida community,” said David Oxfeld, Marlins Vice President and Head of Partnership Development and Strategy. “Our partners at Biscayne Bay Brewing Company knocked it out of the park with a great-tasting craft beer that will pair perfectly with fans cheering on the hometown team alongside family and friends.”

This partnership brings together two Miami brands that are committed to the South Florida community. The Marlins are dedicated to bringing locals a one of a kind, baseball experience rooted in passion, and Biscayne Bay Brewing is dedicated to bringing Miami quality craft beer made by Miamians. Not only are the two brands offering the South Florida community a beer that they can proudly call their own, they’re giving the community a way to give back: each bottle of Marlins Lager provides a donation to the Miami Marlins Foundation’s Home Plate Meals program.

“We are incredibly honored to be producing a beer with the Marlins,” said Jose Mallea, President of Biscayne Bay Brewing. “The support they have shown us as an independent locally owned craft brewery cannot be overstated and we are excited to put out into market something that fans can enjoy in their own unique way. This is the perfect summer beer for Miami!”

Marlins Lager builds on the partnership’s focus of bringing quality experiences to the Miami community. In December of 2019, the Miami Marlins and Biscayne Bay Brewing announced a five-year partnership and the creation of the Biscayne Bay Brew Hall at Marlins Park. The 3,000-square-foot space, located in the atrium near sections 15-16 on the Promenade Level, will feature a bar, communal tables, a performance space and large video wall when opened to fans later this year or in 2021. With a brew hall and new beer just for them, South Florida has a lot to be ready for this upcoming baseball season and beyond.

Von Ebert Brewing Releases Ambient Roar – Official Beer of the 2020 Portland Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival

July 2, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Von Ebert Brewing Releases Ambient Roar – Official Beer of the 2020 Portland Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival

PORTLAND, Ore. — Though the festival itself was canceled, the Von Ebert Brewing official beer of the2020 Portland Farmhouse & Wild Ale Festival is still being released this Friday, July 3rd, at both its Glendoveer and Pearl Portland pubs in 500ml bottles and draft. Ambient Roar is an oak foeder fermented mixed-culture ale with wild yeast and bacteria, specialty grains like kamut un-malted spelt and einkorn, and fruits and juices from prickly pear, hibiscus and limes.

Only 200 bottles of Ambient Roar will be available, and each $12 bottle purchased comes with a golden raffle ticket for a chance to win a VIP pass to next year’s triumphant return of the Portland Farmhouse & Wild Ale Festival. Von Ebert has also packaged up gift packs featuring a gorgeous Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival glass and 2 bottles of Ambient Roar for only $25.

Von Ebert Glendoveer head brewer Sean Burke created Ambient Roar with a vision to combine two of his favorite things.

“We wanted something that was unique and spoke to our love of bringing culinary elements into our beer making approach,” says Burke, a well known fan of oak aged wild ales, as well as the culinary delights of taquerias.

“I was eating some amazing carnitas tacos one day at a local taqueria and I ordered a soda, something I rarely do,” recalls Burke. “The flavor was prickly pear and orange and it went really well with the fatty taco’s. I thought that would be a cool idea for a beer. We swapped in the lime to give it a little extra punch and added a little hibiscus to bring a floral/spiced element to it.”

“Though this year’s festival didn’t happen, it’s still cool to be able to have a little piece of what could have been,” says Portland Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival founder Ezra Johnson-Greenough. “Ambient Roar was brewed at Von Ebert Glendoveer, where the festival itself was set to happen in early May, and it’s a fitting tribute to the festival and this complex genre of beers.”

Von Ebert Glendoveer hosted the Portland Farmhouse and Wild Ale Festival in 2019 after the event relocated from Saraveza, and was set to host again this year before the COVID-19 crisis struck. This year’s fest, a showcase for breweries and beers from across the country made in the farmhouse traditions of France and Belgium, was to be the largest such event in Oregon. Like those authentic European farmhouse ales, Ambient Roar is a product of its environment.

“The region we live in is so bountiful that we would be foolish to not integrate the high quality ingredients it provides into our beers as much as possible,” says Burke. “I think Ambient Roar will age well. It is drinking beautifully right now, but I think over time as some of the delicate flavors subside, the base beer will continue to mature nicely.”

Ambient Roar Details
Mixed-culture, foeder fermented base beer with pilsner malt, kamut un-malted spelt and einkorn from Bluebird Grain Farms in Winthrop, Washington. Kamut, spelt and einkorn are all loosely related to wheat or are old/ancient grains.Prickly pear, hibiscus and lime added after maturation and before packaging.Bottle conditioned

Three Weavers Brewing Company’s California Radler is Back

July 2, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Three Weavers Brewing Company’s California Radler is Back

Inglewood, Calif. -Three Weavers Brewing Company announces the return of California Radler, a 4% ABV summer seasonal, for availability at their Inglewood Taproom and for purchase at California distributors in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans.

To craft California Radler, a crisp blonde ale is blended with house-made citrus soda. Flavors of tangerine, lemon and lime come together in Three Weavers’ refreshingly crushable interpretation of sunshine in a can. Brewmaster Alexandra Nowell suggested that California Radler is best paired with dishes like chilaquiles and grilled shrimp tacos; and the perfect complement to summertime activities like socially distanced hiking, beaching and biking.

California Radler carries on the citrusy, quenching tradition of radler style beers, thought to have originated in the 1920’s during the bicycling boom. A bicycle trail cut straight from Munich, Germany, to Kugler Alm, a beer garden in nearby Deisenhofen owned by Franz Kugler.* One sunny June day in 1922, Kugler’s spot was overwhelmed with thousands of bicyclists. In order to serve all the thirsty cyclists, he blended his beer with a lemon soda, creating a bright, refreshing and citrusy blend that would be dubbed raddlermass, or “cyclist’s liter.”

These days, radler is a style synonymous with summertime sipping. California Radler is now available for local pickup or delivery from Three Weavers’ Inglewood Taproom. See Three Weavers Brewing Company’s newly designed website for the latest taproom updates, or follow along on facebook. Please direct any questions to Lauren Carroll at lcarroll@threeweavers.la.

Flying Dog Brewery Releases Orange Crush Blonde Ale

July 2, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Flying Dog Brewery Releases Orange Crush Blonde Ale

FREDERICK, Md. – Inspired by the Maryland Shore’s most beloved beach cocktail, Flying Dog Brewery has created the latest summer ale to add to your cooler – Orange Crush. This boozy beer mimics the dominant flavors and aroma of the cocktail, giving this beer a balance of tartness and sweetness that lets the citrus shine through.

Created using Citra hops and Wheat and C-20 malts, Orange Crush hits you with a wave of bright orange, then carries you off to sea with a citrusy, sweet finish. This blonde ale also makes brewery history for containing the most citrus ever added to a Flying Dog beer. Our brewers incorporated four different citrus products and three different citrus varieties, all at different points in the process, giving this beer a nice, rounded citrus profile.

“Save your strength for the corn hole tournaments, we’ve got your crush covered” said James Maravetz, VP of Marketing at Flying Dog Brewery. “This juicy new summer ale is bright and refreshing with a tsunami of citrus that’ll help you beat the heat.”

Named for and modeled after the unofficial cocktail of the state of Maryland, the Orange Crush, this beer’s specialty ingredients include orange and tangerine. Orange Crush comes in at 8% ABV with 10 IBUs. Packaged in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles, this new summer specialty starts shipping to distributors the week of June 29, 2020.

This cocktail crossover was the brainchild of a Maryland-born Flying Dog employee, pitched as part of the company’s Brewhouse Rarities program. The Orange Crush was created in Maryland’s popular beachside town, Ocean City, with the undisputed birthplace being Harborside Bar & Grill. The cocktail, which is a delicious combination of orange juice, vodka, lemon-lime soda and triple sec, has exploded out of its beachside birthplace and gained notoriety up and down the East Coast.

Medalla Light Beers Adds Distribution in Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA — For the first time ever, Medalla Light fans and beer enthusiasts in Philadelphia are able to purchase the iconic beer in their hometown. Medalla Light chose to launch in the City of Brotherly Love as it continues to expand throughout Pennsylvania, its eighth U.S. market. The award-winning beer brewed on the tropical island of Puerto Rico will be available in over 600 locations, expanding to 1,500 before the end of the year.

Cervecera de Puerto Rico, which has crafted Medalla Light for 40 years, teamed up with Penn Beer Sales & Service to bring Medalla Light to Pennsylvania, as it continues to grow its market share in the United States. The partnership with the premier family-owned company will add the Keystone State to the growing list of sites currently distributing the award-winning beer. Earlier this month, Medalla Light expanded its footprint to key markets in the northeastern coast, including New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC and Massachusetts. The expansion brings the total count of savvy territories serving Medalla Light to eight.

“We are extremely excited to see Medalla Light’s growth in the United States and honored to be partnering with Penn Beer & Sales,” said Jorge Bracero, CMO of Cervecera de Puerto Rico. “Our arrival in Pennsylvania follows the success we’ve seen in Florida and Connecticut and we know sales will continue to expand in the coming months. Beer lovers in Pennsylvania will finally be able to enjoy a refreshing beer that truly embodies summer fun.”

“Penn Beer is thrilled to introduce the impeccable quality and rich heritage of Medalla Light beer to our consumers here in Pennsylvania,” stated Matthew J. Funchion, Owner/CEO of Penn Beer. “As distributors, we take pride in choosing our brewing partners and bringing consumers the products they are demanding, Medalla Light perfectly complements our portfolio.”

Known for its premium ingredients, clean and refreshing taste, Medalla Light is the ideal choice to kick off the summer cookout season. The ultra-versatile beer pairs well with a variety of cuisines and dishes, including the traditional barbecue spread.

Cervecera de Puerto Rico recently added six more tanks, increasing the brewery’s overall output capacity to 90,000 barrels per year. The expansion is part of the beer giant’s 2020 plan, which began earlier this month with the arrival of Medalla Light in New Jersey.

“The expansion of Medalla Light is fueled by consumer demand. At Cervecera de Puerto Rico, we are well-positioned to continue on our rapid growth curve in the United States. The future is bright for Medalla Light” added Bracero.

With 77 calories and 4.2 ABV per 10oz, the popular light beer will be hitting the shelves in 12 and 24 pack cans and with 98 calories and 4.2 ABV per 12oz, will be available in 6 and 24-pack bottles.

Cervecera’s portfolio includes Magna Premium Lager, Silver Key Light Beer, Del Oeste Artisan Beers and Malta India, a popular non-alcoholic malt-based soft drink in the Caribbean.
