Von Ebert Brewing Adds Bohemian Pilsener to Canned Beer Lineup

July 29, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Von Ebert Brewing Adds Bohemian Pilsener to Canned Beer Lineup

PORTLAND, Ore. –– On Friday, July 24, Von Ebert Brewing, the award-winning and locally owned Portland-based brewing company, will release three beers in 16 oz. can four-packs. All three will appear in cans for the first time. One of the beers, Bohemian Pilsener, is a brand new beer to the Von Ebert lineup, while the other two, Vienna Lager and Pierre Le Chat, have been draft-only favorites in the past.

Bohemian Pilsener
Bohemian Pilsener, the ninth and latest addition to the Von Ebert roster of pilsners, is decocted and brewed in the Czech-style featuring bready malt flavors and a floral nose. The 5.0% ABV and 38 IBU beer is the result of the Von Ebert team’s attempt to replicate the masterpiece pale lagers found in modern day Czech Republic.

“One of the more memorable beers I ever had was in the cellar of the Pilsner Urquell brewery in Pilsen, Czech Republic,” explained Sean Burke, head brewer, Von Ebert Glendoveer. “I recall it being the first time I discovered ‘layers of flavor’ in a beer and asking myself, how could such a simple beer be so complex? The answer, of course, is ingredients and process, the answer for what makes every beer unique.”

The Von Ebert Bohemian Pilsener started with floor-malted Bohemian Czech barley. Very little was done to the water used in the beer since Portland’s water is so soft and exactly what’s needed for a beer of the style. Only Czech Saaz hops were used in the beer, bringing an herbaceous, floral quality to it that works well with the malt character derived from the floor-malted barley. It was fermented low and slow with one of the brewery’s favorite strains of lager yeast.

The beer was also decocted for flavor maximization, with multiple decoctions drawn off during the mashing process, boiled, and then returned to the mash to raise the temperature to the next rest.

Vienna Lager
Vienna Lager, the 2020 Oregon Beer Awards Gold Medal winner in the Light German and European Lager category, is an Austrian-style copper lager with a 4.8% ABV and 18 IBUs. The beer is malt forward without being cloyingly sweet, crisp without being thin, and contains just enough noble hops to round it out. It has flavors of toasted bread, toffee, and nuts, and is the perfect accompaniment to a backyard BBQ or riverside camp meal at the end of the day.

“We’re quite proud of this beer and the recognition it has received, especially since that recognition came after the very first time we brewed it,” commented Burke.

Pierre Le Chat
A French pilsner in the Italian style, Pierre Le Chat offers characteristics of strawberry leaf, hay loft, and lemon peel, with a 4.8% ABV and 31 IBUs.

The beer uses 100% French barley and three different French hops: Strisselspalt and Aramis in both the kettle and whirlpool, and then dry-hopped with Barbe Rouge.

“We sometimes get asked if Italian pilsners use all Italian ingredients,” said Burke. “The answer is no for our Italian pilsner, but the question gave Jason Hansen, one of our brewers, the great idea of making a beer using entirely French ingredients. Pierre Le Chat, our French-style pils, was born out of that and named after Jason’s cat. We’re not sure if that style already exists, but if it does, we hope we’re doing it justice. I don’t like to get too hung up on styles because if we never tried anything different, many world class beers wouldn’t exist.”

Bohemian Pilsener, Vienna Lager, and Pierre Le Chat will all be available on Friday on draft and in 16oz. can four-packs at both Von Ebert locations – Glendoveer and the Pearl.

Second Line Brewing Announces New Beer Releases for July and August 2020

Second Line Brewing Announces New Beer Releases for July and August 2020

NEW ORLEANS — Second Line Brewing, one of New Orleans’ most loved neighborhood craft breweries, is excited to announce the release of two new beers in the coming weeks.

True to their mission to create “Great Beer, Brewed Honestly,” Second Line will be releasing several exciting new beers during the months of July and August. Originally produced as small-scale Beer Garden only pilot brews, these beers have garnered a significant following amongst Second Line customers. A recent fan favorite just released as a large batch is MSY Common Lager. Named after the IATA call signs for the New Orleans airport, this beer has a delicate malt grain bill balanced with just enough hops to round things out. A perfect year-round beer, MSY was released on Friday, July 17 to much excitement from its fans.

Next on the release schedule is Salternative Universe, a Himalayan Sea Salt IPA brewed with over five pounds of hops per barrel. A combination of Citra, Sabro, Moutere, El Dorado, and Wai-iti hops, along with the Himalayan salt, make this a very unique beer unlike anything else in the regional market. From its pilot beer beginnings, this beer went through ten variations before the team at Second Line settled on the perfect blend of ingredients to produce a sunny beer with a creamy white head, with aromas of candied grapefruit, pineapple, and stonefruit. On the palate, smooth layers of citrus, peach, and melon come through before giving way to a hint of saltiness. Salternative Universe will make its debut on Friday, July 24, and can be purchased on-line for pick up from the beer garden at www.secondlinebrewing.com or can be purchased at the beer garden during normal operating hours.

Following Salternative Universe, Second Line will be releasing “Pour With Vigor”, a Czech-style Pilsner, which is slated for release on August 21. Pour With Vigor is Second Line’s first large batch Pilsner, and its pilot beer equivalent was so well loved by beer garden customers that it sold out in less than one week. This is a simple yet elegant beer, made from gently kilned European Pilsner malt and traditional Czech Saaz hops. Pour With Vigor honors the innumerable contributions to craft beer by Charlie Bamforth, the head of Malting and Brewing Science at UC Davis. Charlie constantly reminds beer lovers to pour their beer with vigor, in order to create an aesthetically pleasing and aromatic head of foam. Pour With Vigor is a picture perfect pilsner, refreshing and fitting for the blazing hot days of summer in New Orleans.

Deschutes Brewery Releases Limited Release Fan Favorite, Exclusive Small Batch Beers

July 28, 2020 by Andrew Innes

BEND, Ore. – Back by popular demand, Chainbreaker, a favorite among Deschutes drinkers for many years, will release again this Fall for a limited time. Proudly named after a local’s favorite mountain bike race in the brewery’s hometown of Bend, Oregon, Chainbreaker will make its comeback after a 4 year hiatus next month.

“Fans have been asking for its return since 2016, and the yeast, wheat and hop driven flavor profile is having a bit of a comeback as well,” said Deschutes’ Product Development Director, Veronica Vega. “It’s exciting to align the evolving flavor preference of craft beer drinkers with the return of Chainbreaker, and remembering how refreshing it can be to just get out on a bike.”

Chainbreaker is a creative amalgamation of styles, a hopped up Belgian-style witbier brewed with orange peel for a distinct, bright citrus flavor, the traditional notes of coriander, and the familiar refreshing hop kick of an IPA. Chainbreaker is 5.6% ABV and 40 IBUs and is currently shipping to distributors for an August release. This beer will be available everywhere Deschutes is sold in 6 and 12 pack bottles and on draft through October.

Also releasing in August is a variant to The Dissident, Dissident Boysenberry. This specialty release of the truly distinctive Belgian style Flanders Red is this time fermented with mixed cultures and Oregon boysenberries then aged in oak foeders. The tartness of the boysenberry blends beautifully with the base beer’s malty sweetness and pleasant acidity, providing an interesting counterpoint to the classic. Dissident Boysenberry is 9.7% ABV and 10 IBUs and will be available in 500 ml bottles in select markets, online, and at all Deschutes locations for a limited release on August 15th.

In Deschutes’ Small Batch lineup, Blue Butterfly, a limited release dry hopped saison with brettanomyces, will release on August 10th. This small batch experimental reserve is a unique offering with a balanced combination of saison esters, subtle brett funkiness, and fruity + floral hop notes. A Blue Butterfly is representative of transformation and change and symbolizes this distinctive beer’s journey that is dry hopped at the end with Celeia and Mosaic hops. Blue Butterfly is 5.2% ABV and 22 IBUs and will be availabile in 500ml bottles and on draft in select markets, online and at all Deschutes locations.

Fibonacci Brewing Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

July 28, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Fibonacci Brewing Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

CINCINNATI, OH— Fibonacci Brewing Company might be the smallest brewery in the state, but that doesn’t keep them from doing big things. When COVID hit this spring, Fibonacci was the first to launch drive thru and delivery services and is still maintaining it five days a week. Like the “milkman”, Fibonacci delivers beer to all of Hamilton County and picks up empty growlers for the next refill. In addition, the brewery also has a legitimate drive thru window so customers can order online and pick up without having to come inside. Providing these services is part of what has kept this nanobrewery in business this year.

In early April, about a month after the COVID closures, Fibonacci suffered a tornado and close to $20,000 in property damages. Again this brewery did what was needed to stay open, without power, running on a generator, and without a street sign that took about 6 weeks to replace. With a tiny open sign in the window, customers were somehow able to find the drive thru and Fibonacci kept delivering orders throughout Hamilton county every day of the week. At this point, most of the damage has been repaired, but Fibonacci is still waiting on a new roof for the brewery.

During the last few months, Fibonacci has still worked to help the local community by brewing beers to support hospitality professionals, women in beer, and supporting their local community non-profits like the Alliance food pantry and after school program. Fibonacci has continued to host its monthly farmers markets to assist with food insecurity needs in Mount Healthy where there is a food desert and they are able to offer SNAP and Produce Perks benefits as well as voter registration.

According to co-owner and President Betty Bollas, “It’s been rough the last few months for small businesses, but we have also had some great support. People have left us notes of encouragement in their online orders, dropped off inspirational painted rocks, hand sewn face masks, and our staff have been right there with us and doing everything they can to help keep us going. Despite all obstacles, we are still in business and we want to celebrate that with the people who have been there with us over the last few months or over the last five years. We are feeling positive for what our future will be as we continue to build our community, brewery, and urban farm with the amazing people who support us!”

Named after Italian mathematician Leonardo Pisano, commonly known as Fibonacci, the brewery integrates math, science, and nature into their beer, taproom design, events, workshops and offers private event space.

TROY, N.Y. — Shmaltz Brewing and 518 Craft hosts a community wide celebration as a fundraiser for YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc. on Friday, July 31 for “Troy Night Out.” Rare Form brewed a commemorative Imperial Stout (8% ABV) for Black Is Beautiful along with Shmaltz, Indian Ladder, and Bound By Fate in support of the Black Is Beautiful campaign launched by San Antonio, Texas-based brewery, Weathered Souls. Nearly 1,000 craft breweries — representing all 50 states and 19 countries — have come together to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and to donate funds for local and national social justice causes.

An Outdoor Community Fundraiser takes place as part of “Troy Night Out” in front of 518 Craft (200 Broadway, Troy, NY) on Friday, July 31 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. Sales of Black Is Beautiful at 518 Craft will be donated to the exceptional non-profit YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc.. YWCA-GCR is at the forefront of the most critical social movements — from women’s empowerment and civil rights, to affordable housing and pay equity, to violence prevention and health care. The four breweries join in the fight against systemic racism and help raise funds for YWCA-GCR in recognition of their impactful work.

As protests broke out across the nation on June 7, Troy gathered 11,000 protesters for peaceful action in support of Black Lives Matter. YWCA-GCR 2020 Mission Series on July 31 will spotlight artwork featuring the BLM protest in Riverfront Park and throughout the downtown. The Outdoor Community Fundraiser includes a mixed-media art show curated by Thom Williams (Arts Center of the Capital Region), artwork by Danny Killion of Weathered Wood, t-shirts by local activist Jammella Anderson, and music by DJ Poetik Selektions. With its mission of eliminating racism and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, YWCA-GCR’s Executive Director Starletta Smith will speak at 6:30pm.

“A collaboration like Black Is Beautiful is just a starting point; now is the time to look within and ask yourself what you can do to drive positive change from the inside out,” said Dr. J Nikol Jackson-Beckham, the Brewers Association’s diversity ambassador.

Jeremy Cowan, Owner/Founder of Shmaltz Brewing, comments, “We are honored to be included with Rare Form’s brewing participation in this one-of-a-kind national craft beer initiative, Black Is Beautiful. A shout out to Weathered Souls for launching this project and nearly 1,000 breweries across the country who acknowledge this crucial need to raise awareness and to call for action to oppose violence against the black community and racism in all its forms. I’m really proud to participate in the local Troy community, our enormous outpouring of over ten thousand people taking to the streets, and to support the ongoing success of our local YWCA-GCR.”

SLO Brew’s Cali-Squeeze Now Available Nationwide

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – SLO Brew, Central California’s longest-standing craft brewery, is pleased to announce its uber-popular Cali-Squeeze is popping into coolers nationwide. Now for the first time, beer-lovers outside the Golden State can score this refreshing warm-weather sipper.

Since launching in 2017, Blood Orange Cali-Squeeze has been flying off shelves and quickly climbing the ranks as a fan favorite. This year the Cali-Squeeze collection has grown to meet an unquenchable thirst for big fruit flavor by adding Mango and Tropical P.O.G. (passion fruit, orange, guava) varieties.

Craft beer outlets and major retailers across the country are stocking their fridges with 12oz and 16oz cans of the crushable brews. Additionally, California natives can have Cali-Squeeze, and all of SLO Brew’s award-winning craft beers, delivered direct to their door.

Why Juice Up a Perfectly Delicious Hefeweizen?

The SLO Brew crew set off on a mission to can sunshine by brewing the ultimate infused wheat beer for an endless summer. Most so-called “fruit beers” (and hard seltzers) are made with extracts and phony flavorings, but Cali-Squeeze breaks the mold by layering real fruit puree on a soft Hefeweizen base. Its natural, vibrant color and bursts of refreshing flavor will surprise and delight non-beer drinkers and hop heads alike. Pack the cooler for the beach, lake or pool and ease into California time with a juicy brew to bring summer home.

Indeed Brewing Company Launches Pistachio Cream Ale Into Multi-State Distribution

July 27, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Indeed Brewing Company Launches Pistachio Cream Ale Into Multi-State Distribution

MINNEAPOLIS– Indeed Brewing Company is ramping up its production of Pistachio Cream Ale to meet demand. Originally planned to be a one-off release, the beer’s success in May necessitated a second, larger run this July for multi-state distribution into Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota markets.

Indeed’s pilot brewery in Milwaukee—known for its experimental and innovative beers—first brewed Pistachio Cream Ale and released it in its Walker’s Point taproom in February, where it garnered its first loyal following. The recipe was then brewed on a larger scale in Minneapolis to can and distribute, where it caught like wildfire.

“This project was one of our first major R&D successes here at the Walker’s Point brewery and a great example of the entire Indeed organization working together at both locations to create a really unique and interesting beer,” says Milwaukee Brewer Matt Pollock. “The concept started with our Minneapolis sales team initially, then we developed the first pilot batch here in Milwaukee, and from there the Minneapolis brewing team perfected it for large scale distribution. It really was a solid team effort company-wide.”

The beer also set records in Indeed’s production, packaging, and sales departments. The first batch in May was the company’s largest one-off can run and sold out in a week, three weeks sooner than planned. The second run in July was almost twice the size and sold just as fast as it did in May.

“The energy building behind this brand is palpable. It’s bonkers,” says Sales Director Ryan Bandy. “The reception to the liquid, the brand, and the drinking experience from both our retail customers and beer drinkers has been overwhelmingly positive and we’re doing our best to keep up with this running train.”

Indeed Milwaukee will be brewing a batch of Pistachio Cream Ale exclusively for taproom guests and will release on Thursday, August 6. To ensure a safe beer-drinking experience, precautionary measures are in place and include a plexiglass at the ordering station, socially distanced tables, 6-foot markings, hand sanitation stations, and limited capacity at 50 percent (just under 80 people). Masks are worn by staff at all times and guests are required to wear one when not seated. The taproom continues to offer beer to-go with curbside pickup. All beers on tap are available in crowlers and growlers and available for pre-order here: website

The Milwaukee taproom is open for seating and beer to-go during the following hours:
Wednesday-Thursday: 3-9pm
Friday-Saturday: 12-9pm

At Indeed Brewing Company, we’re cultivating an artfully eclectic line-up of beers from the heart of Northeast Minneapolis and our new home in the Walker’s Point neighborhood of Milwaukee. Indeed’s diverse offerings are anchored by its flagship Day Tripper Pale Ale, driven by new hits like Flavorwave IPA and Mexican Honey Light, and elevated by its Wooden Soul series of wild, sour, and barrel-aged beer. Well-known as an engaged and community-oriented brewery, Indeed’s taprooms are warm, welcoming, and home to Indeed We Can, the company’s employee-driven charitable giving program, which donates 100% of taproom net profits to an employee-sponsored local nonprofit every Wednesday of the year. Indeed believes innovation isn’t just one thing—it’s a culture created around good people, good beers, and good experiences. Join them in the pursuit of what’s good.
