DC Central Kitchen and Flying Dog Brewery Rally Top D.C. Chefs to Support Families Affected by COVID-19

FREDERICK, Md. – DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) and Flying Dog Brewery today announced that the two organizations have teamed up to create Dog Chow – a digital cookbook featuring unique Flying Dog-themed recipes developed by top chefs in the D.C. region – to support DCCK’s ongoing COVID-19 response efforts.

Dog Chow, a joint effort between D.C.’s iconic nonprofit that combats hunger and poverty and Maryland’s largest brewery, consists of 13 recipes that feature Flying Dog beers developed by some of the top chefs in the D.C. metropolitan region including Chef Spike Mendelsohn of Good Stuff Eatery, Chef Adam Greenberg of the Coconut Club, Chef Kyle Bailey of The Salt Line and Daniela Moreira of Call Your Mother.

“We have a ton of respect for the chefs who work with DC Central Kitchen, so we are pumped to combine our organizations’ passions to support those in our community who are struggling with food insecurity,” said James Maravetz, VP of Marketing for Flying Dog. “Life looks really different for everyone, we have to remember there are families out there in need of help, and we hope you’ll have fun cooking with your family while helping your neighbors in need.”

Dog Chow is available to download for a small fee of $20 by visiting website. Anyone interested is encouraged to donate additional funds to DC Central Kitchen. A donation of $100 or more will enter the donor in a raffle to win a Flying Dog gift basket valued at $250. All funds raised will be donated to DCCK to support the organization’s efforts to help those in our community affected by COVID-19.

“We are thrilled to partner with Flying Dog and some of our city’s most esteemed chefs with this exciting promotion,” said Mariah Hayes, Events Specialist for DC Central Kitchen. “We believe in the incredible power of food and community, and our staff has worked tirelessly over the past several months to pivot our operation in order to meet the challenges posed by this crisis. Together with Flying Dog, we hope to shed light on our efforts and encourage our community to come together for those in need.”

Ongoing food insecurity issues in the Washington, D.C. area have worsened during the global health crisis COVID-19 has caused in 2020. Many families and individuals who were already struggling with access to healthy, affordable food are unable to feed their families, and people who may not have needed the organization’s services in the past are now relying on the help of DCCK and other nonprofits due to lost jobs and wages. So far during the global health crisis, DCCK has sourced, prepared and delivered 1 million meals for our city’s children, families and elderly in need of healthy food.

Dog Chow is available for download starting Wednesday, July 15 by visiting website.

Reuben’s Crush: Oregon Edition

SEATTLE — REUBEN’S CRUSH: OREGON EDITION is a special new offering in their Reuben’s Crush Series of hazy IPAs with a tip-of-the-cap to Oregon’s beautiful brewing ingredients. “Oregon Crush” was brewed in Washington using 100% hops and malts grown in the great state of Oregon. It features Strata hops from Indie Hops and Citra hops from Crosby Hop Farm paired with malts from County Malt, Mecca Grade, and Camas Country Mill.

Stone Brewing Launches ‘Leave No Stone Unturned’ Campaign

Stone Brewing Launches ‘Leave No Stone Unturned’ Campaign

ESCONDIDO, Calif.– Stone Brewing, the nation’s 9th largest independent craft brewery announces today that its nationwide ‘mishap’ of upside-down labels is not a mistake. In a bold campaign that extends far beyond the advertisements, Stone turned production on its head, deliberately applying labels upside down to reinforce its message that the brewery will ‘Leave No Stone Unturned.’

The nationwide ‘mistake’ was designed to shine light on all the mistakes made to-date, which allows the company to make the best beer possible. The collective years of trial and error and error and error have ensured that every last detail has been considered from ingredient sourcing and brewing, to distribution and service. Any company can be proud of their accomplishments, but Stone’s unique culture is one that especially celebrates the accomplishments that are sometimes born of failures.

Stone’s first upside-down labels began rolling out nationwide in mid-June with no explanation, intentionally catching fans off guard. Today, Stone announces that the labels will remain upturned for the foreseeable future, urging people to look at Stone from a whole new perspective.

Stone Brewing celebrates 24 years of independent craft brewing this year, as well as 24 years of letting others do the advertising. When the team decided upon an ad campaign focused predominantly in Southern California, there was no doubt it would be as thoughtfully and creatively brewed as its well-known beers. Stone’s advertising campaign will make its impact through digital, social and even major outdoor elements like billboards and wallscapes.

“Since founding Stone Brewing in 1996, we’ve been fortunate to participate in making the craft beer revolution what it is today,” explained Greg Koch, Stone Brewing executive chairman & co-founder. “Stone enthusiasts have come to expect innovation and collaboration, and frankly it’s been our honor to deliver. We’re undertaking an ad campaign that we hope will simply remind our fans to both revisit our iconic Stone IPA, as well as to ‘unturn’ some new Stones and discover our wide range of more recent offerings.”

Stone’s first-ever advertising campaign has been designed in collaboration with Stone’s creative agency, Big Family Table. The upside-down art speaks to Stone’s obsessive pursuit of craft beer perfection while inviting fans to right-side their beers, experiencing the benefits of that painstaking perfection first-hand.

About Stone Brewing
Founded by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner in 1996, the groundbreaking San Diego-based Stone Brewing is the 9th largest craft brewer in the United States. The company operates breweries in Escondido, CA and Richmond, VA, plus nine tap room and bistro locations throughout the US and the nation’s largest craft-centric beer distributor, Stone Distributing Co. Stone’s bold, flavorful and largely hop-centric beers are available in all 50 states and more than 40 countries worldwide. Mast Landing Brewing Company to Release Windbreaker IPA

July 16, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Mast Landing Brewing Company to Release Windbreaker IPA

WESTBROOK, Maine — Some things are too iconic to go out of style.

In the pursuit of a beer that is reliable yet eye-catching, lively but not too intense to break out every day, Mast Landing announces Windbreaker IPA, a new core year-round beer in the brewery’s lineup. Windbreaker will be released at the tasting room in Westbrook, Maine on July 17, 2020 and will be shipped to Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and more of the brewery’s consistent regions of distribution.

The recipe for Windbreaker features a bursting palate of Citra and Idaho 7 hops. The flavor profile is tropical fruit forward with a pleasant citrusy quality. Expect notes of melon, mango, and grapefruit in a balanced, refreshing form. Pouring hazy and golden at 6.5%, it builds on the lexicon of hoppy beer that Mast Landing has become known for. Elements of Windbreaker were developed and pioneered through small-batch pilot beers and limited releases. The large scale release arrives hand in hand with Mast Landing’s newly redesigned brand image – unifying the majority of their label artwork in a cohesive theme.

Windbreaker will join Mast Landing’s core lineup alongside beers like Gunner’s Daughter Milk Stout, DDH Tell Tale Pale Ale, Neon Sails IPA, and others. 16oz four-packs will be available at bottle shops, package stores, and grocery locations, while kegs will be available to draft retailers as COVID-19 regulations allow. Of course, the beer will be a mainstay at the brewery’s tasting room in Westbrook, ensuring that fans local and afar can upgrade their fridge fashion.

Despite the setbacks that the pandemic has caused for the food and beverage industry, 2020 is looking to be a year of forward motion for Mast Landing. Along with the addition of Windbreaker and the release of the brewery’s first canned lagers in the Spring, the Westbrook team is in the process of launching a food truck on site at the tasting room headed by Chef Tim Goddu. The truck is still in the development, licensing, and naming process, with no final date set for grand opening. It will be the first foray into food service for the four year old brewery.

Non-Alcoholic Craft Beer Maker Surreal Brewing Releases Creatives IPA

CAMPBELL, Calif.— Surreal Brewing Company adds a new thirst-quenching non-alcoholic beer to its lineup! Introducing “Creatives IPA”, an unconventional beverage of tropical aromas and flavors punctuated by a restrained piney West Coast hop finish. One of the latest additions to its growing line of all-natural, innovative, health-conscious craft beers, Creatives IPA was brewed with the ancient Norwegian Kveik yeast strain and a new variety of hop.

“We were intrigued by Kveik yeast as soon as we heard of it a couple of years ago. We have a deep appreciation for every ingredient we use, especially the yeast, which as the old axiom goes: the brewer makes the wort and the yeast makes the beer,“ said Tammer Zein-El-Abedein.

As in all its carefully crafted brews, the new beer consists of a complex blend that captivates a growing number of craft beer enthusiasts as well as those who drink non-alcoholic beverages.

Awarded World’s Best Non-Alcoholic Beer of 2019, Surreal Brewing Company is the family-founded and operated brewing company that specializes in all-natural, non-GMO, non-alcoholic craft beers as a healthy, yet flavorful, alternative to alcohol and/or sugary drinks. The brand’s core brews are all available starting at 17 calories per can, no sugar, low carbs, and two reduced gluten options: Chandelier Red IPA, Juicy Mavs Hazy IPA, 17 Mile Porter, and Natural Bridges Kolsch Style.

Creatives IPA will initially roll out online at Surreal Brewing.com before being made available at select stores in California.

“This brew is a shout out to all creatives, whether that is through the arts, technology, or any other creative outlet, to everyone who creates positive change. This beer is made for all who Dare to Be Different,” said Donna Hockey.

About Surreal Brewing Company

Surreal Brewing brings forth a new era in which health-conscious and sober individuals can still enjoy the unique, crisp flavor of beer anytime while maintaining their health goals and feeling included at social gatherings.

Thorn Brewing Releases Canned Michelada into Wide Distribution

July 15, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Thorn Brewing Canned Michelada into Wide Distribution

SAN DIEGO — Do you love a little spice in your life and beer? Thorn Brewing Co. did it again and created the perfect summer beverage! After being the first San Diego brewery to create and can a Baja-style lager, they now have released San Diego’s first canned, craft michelada.

Using Thorn’s Barrio Baja-style lager as its base, this incredibly refreshing michelada is the perfect “anytime” beer. At 4% ABV, people can enjoy a few, whether they are relaxing by the pool, brunching, or out golfing with friends.

Ingredients:
Barrio Lager
Tomato juice
Hot sauce
Clam juice
Ponzu
Lime Juice
Cumin
Worchestershire sauce
Black Pepper

When Thorn decided to create a michelada, they wanted to make sure it was thoughtfully made with the best ingredients. Co-founder and Director of QC/QA, Eric O’Connor, elaborates. “When we set out to make a michelada, we found that many of the michelada mixers and other common ingredients such as Clamato contained things like MSG, high-fructose corn syrup, food coloring, and other artificial additives. Instead, we use tomato juice with no sugar added, real clam juice (Clamato uses powder), real lime juice, no food coloring, Ponzu instead of Maggi seasoning to avoid the MSG, and a top-shelf Worcestershire sauce which contains no high-fructose corn syrup. We are passionate about our products and wanted to put out the best craft michelada possible.”

Thorn co-founder Dennis O’Connor’s response was short and sweet. “I didn’t think Barrio Lager could get any better. I was wrong. You’ll never have to carry Worchestershire sauce in your back pocket again!”

Thorn Michelada will be available this week in stores throughout Southern California, at Thorn tasting rooms, and through Thorn beer delivery.

About Thorn Brewing Co.
Thorn Brewing Co. started out in 2012 in North Park as Thorn Street Brewery where they became known as San Diego’s ultimate neighborhood brewery. Their Barrio Logan location opened in 2017 and produces their beer on a 30-barrel system, houses their canning line as well as a tasting room and events space. Thorn Mission Hills just opened up this past summer and is already becoming a local hangout featuring 12 rotating taps, beer-to-go, and skeeball. Gunwhale Ales Expands Distribution to All of Southern California

July 15, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Gunwhale Ales Expands Distribution to All of Southern California

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — Gunwhale Ales officially announces another expansion of its distribution footprint to Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, as well as its home market of Orange County and previously distributed San Diego County. The partnership with Craft Los Angeles and Craft San Diego allows a consolidation of efforts to supply the entire Southern California region. Gunwhale is looking to meet demand by supplying more packaged beer from its production facility and taproom in Orange, California, which was opened in late 2019.

“We are incredibly excited to partner with Gunwhale Ales. Great brand, great liquid and, most importantly, great people. Craft Los Angeles is looking forward to quickly fulfilling the untapped demand for Gunwhale Ales and building the brand throughout Southern California” said Kyle Sartanowicz, General Manager of Craft LA and Craft SD.

The team behind Gunwhale hopes to succeed in the vibrant and competitive market through culinary driven beers that are both intensely flavored and highly drinkable. The increased cellar capacity, decoction kettle and mash filter at their new production facility will be put to use across their portfolio. It also has allowed the brewery to focus the future of its original location in Costa Mesa on smaller batch, experimental and mixed fermentation brewing.

Bobby Fitzgerald, (Gunwhale’s Co-Founder) shares, “We have always hoped to reach the many beer fans outside of our home market of Orange County, but could not do so without our new facility humming along and our distribution plan in place. This is a thrilling time for us to be aligning with Craft LA and Craft SD, and we are very confident in their ability to service our loyal customers and reach new retailers who have been reaching out and waiting. We can’t wait to offer our take on “West Coast farmhouse” beers that are intriguing to consumers. These are beers that speak to both the heritage and lifestyle of Southern California. The unique equipment, techniques, and nuanced decisions we are making will help people fall in love with our approach to beer.”

Initially Gunwhale will be offering the following beers across the region:

BAIT BALL IPA – 6.6% ABV, a modern, unfiltered West Coast style IPA with big dry hop of Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic. (16oz cans and draft kegs)

SURFBIRD – 4.8% ABV, an easy-drinking California Golden Ale with Honey Malt sweetness and low bitterness from American hops. (12oz cans and draft kegs)

TROPICAL DOWNPOUR Hazy IPA – 7.1% ABV, a Hazy IPA brewed with Pilsner and White Wheat malt. Sultry tropical fruit notes from a double dry hop schedule of Mosaic, Cascade & Cashmere. (16oz cans and draft kegs)

NARRABEEN DDH Hazy DIPA – 8.3% ABV, an Imperial IPA chock full of citrus, melon and tropical fruit notes. Double dry-hopped with Mosaic & Galaxy hops. (16oz cans and draft kegs)

ACROSS THE STARS Bohemian Pilsner – 5.3% ABV, a crisp Czech style lager built upon Pilsner and Vienna Malt and Saaz hops. (Draft kegs only)

The company will also offer smaller amounts from their focused portfolio of farmhouse-inspired beers, including the barrel-aged, mixed fermentation, and wild specialty labels that they have become known for.

About Gunwhale
Gunwhale beers strike a balance between the raw, wild spirit of farmhouse brewing, and the pioneering hop forward styles of California. We have an obsession with yeast driven Saisons, aromatic, hoppy pale beers, and other rustic, wild and sour ales. This gives our beers uncommon qualities that are both surprisingly delicate and nuanced, yet refined and robust in their simplicity. From bright, billowy summer ales to rustic, fortifying stormers that stand up to the rougher seas, Gunwhale makes beers that reflect the culinary and cultural heritage of the West Coast.

Visit Gunwhale’s brewery taprooms in Costa Mesa and Orange, California, or find updates about stockists, events, and beer releases at gunwhaleales.com. Follow @gunwhaleales on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

New Holland Brewing Company Reveals New Branding

July 14, 2020 by Andrew Innes

New Holland Brewing Company Reveals New Branding

HOLLAND, Mich. — New Holland Brewing Company has proudly reintroduced itself to supporters with branding that recaptures the spirit of their vision.

The rebrand concentrates on offering something special for everyone by being innovative, welcoming and resourceful. These principles are anchored by the Dutch word “Gezellig,” an all encompassing feeling that spans from cozy to friendly, relaxing to comfortable, enjoyable to gregarious. More a state of mind than a specific image, Brand Manager Adam Dickerson explains how the Gezellig lifestyle applies to New Holland.

“At the heart of who we are, New Holland is here to inspire joy and create moments worth remembering with the people you care most about,” Dickerson said. “Our role in that is to be that beverage on the table that brings people together—the centerpiece to those moments.”

Visually, the updated windmill logo leads as a focal point for the branding. Redesigned to look both contemporary and classic, the soft lines and vibrant color palette create a logo that’s built to last. It refocuses on New Holland’s Dutch heritage while paving the way forward for innovation.

“That windmill is a symbol of our roots in Dutch culture,” Dickerson said. “But I think what we’ve done with the windmill now is clean, it’s fresh, it feels much more iconic than ever, and that’s our idea—to modernize that Dutch culture.”

Fans will discover the logo front and center on the overhauled packaging, marking an important departure from New Holland’s previous design. From Ichabod’s Horseman to The Poet’s Raven, New Holland has amassed a stable of seminal imagery. The new cans honor the ethos of these brands while uniting the beers under a consistent art style with fun and friendly illustration that make the products both appealing and immediately recognizable.

While much of the core lineup remains, New Holland has invited a few new year-round offerings to the fold. This includes Hazy River, a 100% Citra-hopped, ultra-cloudy New England Style IPA with bright, hop-driven flavors of pineapple, mango and citrus.

Then there’s Little Piglet, a new Session IPA that brings fresh hop cone bitterness at a crushable 4.7% ABV to the portfolio. As for the name, Little Piglet is an ode to the Dutch expression, “I’ll wash that little piglet!” meaning to get the job done. It surely will.

Lastly, welcome Golden Sails, a clean, crisp lager that pairs well with just about any outdoor activity. Expect the new packaging to hit distribution this August/September in six-packs and twelve-packs.

This repositioning for the future has given New Holland’s owner Brett VanderKamp time to take a look at the brewery’s past.

“When I opened the brewery here in Holland there really wasn’t a social drinking culture,” VanderKamp said. “Now you walk 8th street and there’s public houses and establishments that welcome all walks of life and families. It’s really created a nice sense of community and we feel really proud to have helped pioneer that here.”

Think of it as “New Midwest Dutch”—providing joy through moments of togetherness. At New Holland, everyone is welcome and the new branding reinforces that warm hospitality. When visiting the Pub on 8th in Holland or the Knickerbocker in Grand Rapids, you’ll notice changes both subtle and overt that reflect that inviting identity. Ultimately though, as the company continues to evolve and prosper, one thing will always stay the same, when you see a New Holland sign you’ll know: this way to Gezellig times!
