The Bruery Releases Latest Bakery Series Offering: Sticky Bun

February 26, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

This will be the 6th addition to the Bakery series that launched its first release in 2018 with the fan-favorite Coconut Macaroon and has become a staple of The Bruery’s core brands.

Darren Moser, VP of Operations, explains the inspiration behind the series. “The Bakery series is a blended bourbon barrel-aged stout that we use as a canvas to introduce other flavors. The inspiration for this series is your corner bakery and their special of the day. Malt 2.0 Released by Bairds Malt

February 26, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Bairds MaltInverness, United Kingdom — Malt 2.0 has been launched by Bairds Malt to showcase the development of malt produced using new barley varieties introduced to the UK through the Early Evaluation Programme.

The Early Evaluation Programme is a trial program run by Bairds and our merchanting partners (Scotgrain Agriculture) to help identify and evaluate new barley varieties for introduction into the UK market. New varieties are grown each year in different trial plots, with micro malting then undertaken by Bairds to test the suitability of each crop for introduction on a commercial scale.

Malt 2.0 is the first new malt to be produced from the Sassy barley variety, a new variety that has shown great promise as a preferred barley variety for future harvests.

“It’s a great farmer’s variety and a great maltster’s variety, well suited to the variable Scottish climate,” explains Don Peters, seed manager for Scotgrain Agriculture.

At the heart of our Malt 2.0 is KWS Sassy which is a big, bold barley variety, particularly well suited to the variable conditions of growing in the Scottish climate and providing a consistently higher yield to the grower. KWS Sassy represents an almost 10-year journey from the seeds initial cross to its commercial use. We go to extraordinary lengths working in partnership with seed specialists and our in-house agronomists to identify barley varieties of the future. Since Golden Promise was discovered over 50 years ago and enabled us to build our Inverness Maltings deep in the Scottish Highlands, we recognize the importance that yet undiscovered varieties could play in supporting the growth of the malting, brewing, and distilling industry going forwards.

Eddie Douglas, Commercial Director of Bairds Malt said; “This malt is a testament to the extensive research we do to ensure a sustainable future for both the brewing and distilling industries. Heritage varieties are important as they tell us as much about the past as where we should be looking in the future. That said, to create a sustainable future we need barley varieties that work best within our maritime climate and to deliver for our customers.”

As one of the oldest maltsters in the UK, our predecessors have witnessed huge changes in the world while continuing to strive towards the provision of quality malt.

With almost 200 years’ worth of experience, we’re proud to have passed along generations of knowledge and experience in producing and supplying quality malt to many of the world’s leading distillers and brewers.

While much of what we do on a daily basis is based on that shared knowledge, we’ve always adapted to being focused on the future, looking to further develop our craft wherever we can.

Bairds is currently expanding malt production in Scotland, with a refurbishment of our existing Arbroath maltings, and the addition of a new malting plant at our Inverness Maltings in the heart of the Highlands. In addition to meeting increasing demand from our malting customers, an increased capacity also provides opportunities for Scotland’s growers of malting barley.

Dogfish Head Launches Ready-to-Drink Canned Cocktails

February 26, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Dogfish HeadMilton, Del. – One of America’s earliest craft distilleries, Dogfish Head Distilling Co. announces the coast-to-coast* launch of its scratch-made, ready-to-drink Canned Cocktails. The distillery’s lineup of Canned Cocktails includes three off-centered recipes –Blueberry Shrub Vodka Soda, Strawberry & Honeyberry Vodka Lemonade and Cherry Bergamot Whiskey Sour. Each recipe was crafted using Dogfish Head Distilling Co.’s house-made spirits combined with all-natural, high-quality culinary ingredients to create a liquid masterpiece that tastes as if it was poured straight from a bartender’s shaker tin. Dogfish Head Distilling Co.’s scratch-made Canned Cocktails begin hitting shelves in 4pk/355ml slim cans this week.

“A lot of folks don’t realize it, but Dogfish Head has been distilling spirits for about two decades, and we actually released our first ready-to-drink bottled cocktail back in 2017,” said Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head Founder & Brewer. “Just like our award-winning spirits, our Canned Cocktails were born from blissfully inefficient recipes, the overactive imaginations of our uber talented co-workers, and a distinct distilling process centered around innovation and boundless creativity. While our spirits have been available to those throughout the Mid-Atlantic for some time, our Canned Cocktails are the first opportunity for off-centered people nationwide to drink in and explore the goodness that isDogfish Head Distilling Co.”

Each of Dogfish Head Distilling Co.’s scratch-made Canned Cocktails was artfully crafted and thoughtfully blended for maximum goodness. These flavor-forward, culinary-inspired recipes, compounded by each drink’s unique back story, provide strong points of differentiation in the exploding Canned Cocktail category, which is trending up +46%**.

Blueberry Shrub Vodka Soda (7.0% ABV) – Inspired by the James Beard Award-nominated bar program at Dogfish Head’s geographically-enamored seafood restaurant, Chesapeake & Maine, in Rehoboth, Delaware, this scratch-made Canned Cocktail begins with Dogfish Head Distilling Co.’s vodka distilled with blueberries. It is then macerated with lightly sweetened balsamic and red wine vinegar to create a blueberry shrub vodka and is blended with soda water. The ensuing deep, burgundy-colored libation is juicy and subtly sweet from the blueberries, with a slightly sour and complex fruity character from the vinegar. *L.A. Spirits Awards “Best-In-Show” winner in the ready-to-drink category.*

Strawberry & Honeyberry Vodka Lemonade (7.0% ABV) – Inspired by Sam’s visits to his friend’s honeyberry farm in coastal Maine, this scratch-made Canned Cocktail features Dogfish Head Distilling Co. vodka distilled with honeyberries, macerated with strawberries and blended with a house-made lemonade. Light coral in color with a fresh-squeezed lemonade haze, it exudes the well-balanced tartness of fresh-squeezed lemon combined with a sweet berry taste.

Cherry Bergamot Whiskey Sour (7.0% ABV) – Developed to accentuate the nuances of Dogfish Head Distilling Co.’s malt whiskey, this ready-to-drink Canned Cocktail takes whiskey distilled with tart cherries and highly-fragrant, citrusy bergamot oranges, and blends it with a house-made sour mix. Light amber in color, it is chock full of oak and vanilla whiskey flavors balanced by notes of citrus and dark cherries with a hint of honey, lemon and bergamot.“Dogfish Head Distilling Co. has always been focused on building our recipes around enticing combinations of natural culinary ingredients in their rawest forms; never adding flavorings or bringing in bulk-spirits for re-distillation,” said James Montero, Dogfish Head’s Innovation Manager for Beyond Beer. “This commitment has allowed us to produce a wide array of award-winning vodkas, gins, rums, whiskeys and more, and has helped us build a loyal cadre of spirits drinkers. I’m proud to share that that same level of rigorous care was used when creating the recipes for our ready-to-drink Canned Cocktails.”

With quality and authenticity at the core of its DNA, Dogfish Head Distilling Co. spent hundreds of hours honing its Canned Cocktail recipes, using a number of stringent R&D processes to inform its quest for excellence. From conducting quality control analyses and tasting panels to garnering feedback from guests at Dogfish Head’s coastal Delaware restaurants and taproom, the development of these Canned Cocktails was recognized and rewarded in late 2020. “We knew we weren’t going to officially release these tasty cocktails until early 2021, but we just couldn’t contain our excitement any longer,” said Sam. “So, we submitted a preliminary sample of our Blueberry Shrub Vodka Soda to the L.A. Spirits Awards and it ended up winning “Best-In-Show” in the ready-to-drink category. What an awesome way to kick-off the New Year and celebrate the soon-to-be launch of our latest endeavor!”

Block 15 Launches Farm-Focused Seasonal Single Hop Lineup, Selection Series

February 25, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Block 15 BrewingCORVALLIS, Ore. — Block 15 Brewing Company announces the release of Selection Series, a limited seasonal release of single hop IPAs highlighting the relationship with regional hop farms and the science behind the selection process. This year’s lineup will feature the best cuts of Mosaic, Citra, Centennial and Strata hops from renowned farms Coleman Agriculture, Loftus Ranches and Wyckoff Farms.

“Through these hop selections, we are able to pinpoint hops from regional farms that shine within our programs and are of distinct characters. One of the most notable experiences is seeing how personal sensory analysis is with multiple descriptors being noted by each individual.” said Block 15 founder Nick Arzner. “Some characteristics are shared across those evaluations while many are unique to our own senses. Rarely do our evaluations completely line up with the traditional characters published about these various hop varieties. The Selection Series IPAs showcase these choice selections, and gives our fans a unique look under the hood of our processes.”

“We are very excited to be working with Block 15 brewery on their upcoming Selection Series beer, using Strata and Mosaic from our Alluvial Hop Farm. The Alluvial farm has been noted by Block 15 as producing hops that gives them the opportunity to explore new styles and tastes in beer to share with their consumers.” said Coleman Hops Co/Owner and Senior Hop Farm Manager, John Coleman. “Coleman Agriculture feels this will be the beginning of a long enduring relationship between our farm, and one of the top breweries in the state. The relationship has a strong foundation with connections through the OSU Fermentation program, OSU Alumni involved on both sides, and the farm location is 30 minutes from Block 15’s brewing operations. Because of the close locations we also value the opportunity to work with them on projects and concerns close to our hearts as we move to improve the ability of both to become better stewards of our natural resources and prosper for future generations.”

“Our Centennial hops are a labor of love, because that’s what growing a high quality Centennial takes, lots of labor, and lots of love.” says Kirby Redman, Director – Hop Division, Wyckoff Farms. “The Love is all the attention we pay to them (as such for all of our hops) in the precise farming procedures, giving them just enough of what they need. Centennials are very sensitive, as such they require precise timing, from fertilizing, to training dates, and harvest. We are using more organic, plant based chemistries in our regular production, not only as a means to reduce our use of man-made chemistries, but to truly create the relationship and balance for optimal plant health, sort of a soil to cone approach. Really, allowing the hops to speak for themselves. Working with Block 15 is the direct reward and payback we get as hop farmers. It’s very special for us to interact with the brewery to understand what they like in our hops. It allows us to tell our story through the fantastic beer that Block 15 makes.”

Selection Series beer will release a single hop beer every weekend, beginning February 27th, into the month of March. Distribution to bottle shops and markets will deliver Selection Series throughout the Pacific Northwest via Block 15 Distribution.

About Selection Series

Hop selection, the most wonderful time of year! Each fall, after fresh hop harvests are dried and baled, our team evaluates varieties grown at the Pacific Northwest’s finest hop farms. We eagerly tear into the bale cuts, rub the cones between our hands and deeply inhale the aromatics; our brains analyzing the myriad of characters as we search for the perfect hop to use in our programs. Each cut is unique, as is each brewer’s evaluation of the characteristics. For more information visit http://block15.com/

Tucker Brewing Company to Release 2 Brews Inspired by German Brewing Traditions

February 24, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Tucker BrewingATLANTA — Tucker Brewing Company, founded in 2017 by brother and sister duo Ryan Chapman and Ashley Chapman Hubbard, was born out of a love for German-style pilsners and helles (light) lagers with the idea of re-creating those beers in the south. Staying true to the brand, Tucker Brewing is taking 2021 head-on with two exciting upcoming releases. The beers, Radler a seasonal return made with freshly squeezed lemonade and the brand new to cans Goseanna, stay true to German brewing traditions. Goseanna, named after the German salut used when cheering a gose beer, will be released on March 18. Due to the popularity of the Radler last May – it sold out in its first weekend and Tucker is, of course, bringing it back on April 15 – this time, brewing quadruple the amount.

“Our team at Tucker Brewing is so excited to share these beers with our community,” said owner Hubbard. “Last year, we brewed 60 bbls of Radler initially. We knew it would sell quickly but didn’t expect it to go THAT quick! We ended up having to brew extra last year to keep up with the exciting demand from our community. This year, we want to make sure we have enough, so we are doubling down ahead of time leading up to the release. We also have no doubt that the Goseanna will be a hit as well – it’s the perfect next addition to our core beer lineup, showcasing variety in the German beer space. The beer is zesty, clean and delicious – our team knocked it out of the park.”

The newest addition to Tucker Brewing’s core beers, Goseanna, will be available on March 18. Pronounced “GO-zah” the style originated in Goslar, Germany, where the Gose River flows. Evidence suggests this style of beer dates all the way back to 500 AD. Sea salt balances the Goseanna, and coriander delivers a zesty, citrus spice on the nose. There is a considerable yet approachable sourness that complements this beer’s solid wheat backbone. It’s a refreshing beer that will now be offered in cans year-round.

Perhaps Tucker Brewing’s most popular beer last year, Radler means “cyclist” in German. It was created in the early 1900s to quench bikers’ thirsts, and although not overly sweet, it is a crisp and refreshing beer with the invigorating taste of freshly squeezed lemon. Not surprisingly, this beer is loved by many, causing a line of cars out the door last year for preorder pickup. It is the perfect beer for warm weather. If you need to see what Radler time means, view this video.

Both beers will be available for purchase in 6-packs and cases throughout Atlanta and on tap and in cans at Tucker Brewing’s taproom and beer garden. For more information on both beers and Tucker Brewing Company, head to www.tuckerbrewing.com. Photos, interviews and samples available upon request.

About Tucker Brewing Company:

Tucker Brewing Company is home to Georgia’s premier lager brewery. Nominated as a USA Today 10Best, Tucker Brewing is also home to Georgia’s largest beer garden. Experiences studying abroad in Germany led to a life-long passion for pilsners and helles (light) lagers. With the idea of re-creating those beers in the south, Tucker Brewing Company was founded in 2017 by Ryan Chapman and Ashley Chapman Hubbard. Tucker Brewing Company is proud to serve Dekalb county with delicious German-style beers and an amazing scratch kitchen with a chef-inspired, seasonal menu. Saint Arnold – The Patron Saint for Belgian Brewers and Hop Pickers

February 23, 2021 by Dow Scoggins

Saint Arnold - The Patron Saint for Belgian Brewers and Hop PickersSaint Arnold(Arnold of Soissons) is a saint of the Catholic Church and the patron saint of hop-pickers and Belgian brewers.

As abbot in Oudenburg, Arnold brewed beer, as essential in medieval life as water. Saint Arnold encouraged local peasants to drink beer, instead of water, due to its “gift of health”. During the process of brewing the water was boiled and thus freed of pathogens, making the beer safer to drink. The beer normally consumed at breakfast and during the day at this time in Europe was called small beer, having a very low alcohol content, and containing spent yeast. It is likely that people in the local area normally consumed small beer from the monastery, or made their own small beer at the instructions of Arnold and his fellow monks. During one outbreak of sickness, Arnold advised the local people to avoid consuming water, in favor of beer, which advice effectively saved lives.

One miracle tale says, at the time of an epidemic, rather than stand by while the local people fell ill from drinking water, Saint Arnold had them consume his monastery brews. Because of this, many people in his church survived the plague.
