New Belgium Brewing Launches Limited-Edition Sour Beer with Flying Embers

July 14, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

New Belgium BrewingVENTURA, CA – Craft beer pioneers, New Belgium Brewing, and botanical brew experts, Flying Embers, have unveiled today their exciting collaborative project, Oh, Hi!, just in time for summer. The innovative partnership marries New Belgium’s extensive sour beer program with Flying Embers’ groundbreaking Kombucha fermentation techniques to create a refreshing, limited-edition session sour beer.

Inspired by the place Flying Embers calls home, Ojai, California, Oh, Hi! stemmed from a shared commitment to sustainable practices and giving back. New Belgium is a certified B-corporation and recently announced their flagship, Fat Tire Amber Ale, as the first carbon neutral beer in the country, while Flying Embers carbonates their beverages with their own recaptured CO2 and donates a portion of all proceeds to support first responders. Although the traditional opposing brewing processes for beer vs. kombucha make the two brewers unlikely partners, both companies sought a collaboration in support of wildfire relief, after each of their home states were ravaged by wildfires. Together, they are donating $10,000 to the Embers Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which will benefit the Colorado Coalition for the Poudre River Watershed, and the California Fire Foundation.

Oh, Hi! features Flying Embers’ “Original Essence” Kombucha hard tea blended with New Belgium’s wood-aged golden sour beer, and is finished with Ojai, California pixie tangerines and a touch of Colorado sage. With its light and bright flavors, it’s a unique session sour at 6.5% ABV, appealing to both beer and kombucha drinkers alike.

“Oh Hi! is the enchanted result of a combined love of all things funky and fermented,” said Lauren Limbach, Wood Cellar Director and Blender at New Belgium Brewing. “To create Oh Hi, we combined each of our bases so that both cultures would shine and added a hint of a signature ingredient from each of our geographical regions. When you close your eyes and take a sip, it’s like having the windows rolled down on a road trip from Ojai to Fort Collins.”

“New Belgium’s sour program is world class and getting to pair their Golden base sour with our Flying Embers Kombucha core base is an opportunity to create something really unique for both craft beer and hard kombucha fans to enjoy, “ added Tom Ryan, Senior Director of National Accounts at Flying Embers. “You always know that you are going to get the highest quality product when you try a New Belgium or Flying Embers product.”

Oh, Hi! will be available in select premium retailers across California and Colorado, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Total Wine and Bevmo.

About Flying Embers

Flying Embers is on a mission to cultivate conscious living by changing the alcohol paradigm. In a 100-year-old wine cellar in Ojai, California, the company’s founder had a vision to blend his passion for organic winemaking and the ancient alchemy of fermentation to create modern botanical brews rooted in age-old knowledge and traditions. Today, the company handcrafts Hard Kombuchas, Hard Seltzers, and various beverage innovations. All of their bold and imaginative flavor combinations are fermented with organic ingredients, whole plant botanicals, superfruits and adaptogens. Launched in the midst of the 2017 Thomas Fires, and humbled by the experience that made them, Flying Embers donates a portion of proceeds to first responders.

Hopworks Releases 3 New Beers

July 11, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

HopworksPORTLAND, Ore. – Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB), the first B Corp brewery in the Pacific Northwest, is releasing three new beers just in time for Independence Day celebrations. Both Ace of Spades IIPA and When Life Gives You Blueberries Sour are made with hops and fruits from fellow Salmon-Safe Certified B Corp Roy Farms, and Evelyn Sunshine IPA is brewed in honor of the birthday of HUB founders Christian and Brandie Ettinger’s daughter.

“Roy Farms’ hops are really showcased in this year’s Ace of Spades Imperial IPA; we put just about every hop we had in this brew. I’d tell you which ones, but they’re HOP SECRET!” quipped Matt Speckenbach, Head Brewer at Hopworks. “Roy Farms’ blueberries are also a key ingredient in our summer sour. As we like to say, When Life Gives You Blueberries, make a blueberry kettle sour!”

Evelyn Sunshine IPA is an annual brew that marks the summertime birthday of the Ettinger’s daughter. It’s available on tap only at Hopworks’ two locations on SE Powell Boulevard in Portland and SE Mill Plain Boulevard in Vancouver, Washington.

“14 years ago, Evelyn Sunshine Ettinger came into our lives with rays so bright we tucked them into her middle name. We named her Sunshine for a few hours before chickening out and officially named her Evelyn after her Great Grandmother Forest Evelyn Laufer,” said Christian Ettinger, Founder & Brewmaster. “So, as one does, you brew 600 gallons of over-hopped IPA to commemorate such a glorious occasion! This 14th version clocks in at 7.0% ABV with a light body that allows the ultraviolet hop spectrum to pass through! She’s classic and new world all at the same time. She and we hope you enjoy!”

Ace of Spades IIPA ($15) and When Life Gives You Blueberries Sour ($10) are available on tap and in 16 oz. 4-packs at independent grocers and both Hopworks locations.

Evelyn Sunshine West Coast IPA:

Light and bright like the summer sun, Evelyn Sunshine lets the hops shine through with notes of orange citrus and ripe peach with a deep, northwest dankness. 7.0% ABV. 80 IBU. Releases June 30th.

Ace of Spades IIPA:

This beast is hopped out with Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Simcoe, Waimea, Cryo Idaho 7, El Dorado, and Amarillo hops. Great big grapefruit aromas are complemented by ripe peach and cotton candy waves. Finishes with a classic NW pineyness. The malt stands back and lets the hops shine through. 8.6% ABV. 100 IBU. Releases July 2nd.

When Life Gives You Blueberries Sour:

Fresh blueberries and lemon create the ultimate summertime sour reminiscent of your neighborhood lemonade stand. Made with 100% traceable and organic blueberries from Roy Farms in Eastern Washington. 5.5% ABV. 9 IBU. Releases July 2nd.

Mother Earth Brewing Company Releases New Project X Series HIPA

July 11, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Mother Earth BrewingVista, CA & Nampa, ID – Mother Earth’s newest release marks the halfway point of its rotating Hazy IPA series for 2021 and this time comes in the form of a dazzling new label featuring the acrylic work of San Diego-based abstract artist, Michael Carini.

Decorated with wispy brushstrokes and a color palate straight out of an 80s aerobics VHS, the label is a brief introduction to the mind-blowing liquid underneath. Put plainly, it’ll give your cerebral cortex a proper workout. Coming in at 7.2% ABV and 28 IBUs, Cognitive Aerobics is loaded with aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, navel orange, lemon peel, and melon.

Director of Brewing Ops at Mother Earth, Chris Baker explains the formulation and brewing process:

“With a 50/50 mix of New Zealand and PNW hops, we were able to capture some of the fruitier and juicier qualities and integrate them with some of the well-known attributes of old school IPA hops, which tend to produce more citrus and dankness in the beer. The combination leads to a really even palate from front to back without any use of lactose to achieve body and palate fullness.” – Chris Baker

Cognitive Aerobics is available in 16oz cans and on draft where independent craft beers are sold or at the Mother Earth tasting room in Nampa, ID. Customers may search near them using the brewery’s beer finder at findmotherearthbrewing.com. More info on the beer, artist, and Project X Series is available on the brewery’s website.

About Mother Earth

Mother Earth Brew Co. develops hand crafted artisanal ales in year-round, as well as seasonal and specialty offerings. With multi-state as well as international distribution serviced by breweries in Vista, CA and Nampa, ID; Mother Earth’s award-winning beers help define and maintain the standard of excellence expected of independent craft brewers.

ABOUT SEEPEOPLES

The anti-genre indie pranksters SeepeopleS have been a band for 21 years. The band, which is the brainchild of bandleader/songwriter/producer Will Bradford, has released 5 full length albums and 2 EPs on their own imprint, RascalZRecordZ. It would be an accurate statement to say that there isn’t a single band on the planet that covers as much ground musically, or traverses through as many musical universes as SeepeopleS does. Musicians have long since taken notice and members of Morphine, Spearhead, Dave Matthews Band (Tim Reynolds), and even members of Parliament/Funkadelic are featured on previous albums. All seven records were co-produced by Will Holland (Pixies, New Pornographers, Dead Can Dance) The band has toured ceaselessly, playing over 1500 shows in 46 states during their long career. Most importantly, SeepeopleS features songwriting that is the definition of timelessness and lyrically have been busy writing the most important musical anthems of our generation. It may be long after our lifetimes before this band gets their due, but they certainly will. Nothing this good can remain hidden forever.

As far as “hype” goes, the band was recently nominated for “Best Live Act” for the 2016 New England Music Awards. Other nominations include “Best New Artist” (Relix Magazine Awards 2007).The band has shared the stage and toured with such acts as Death Cab for Cutie, Franz Ferdinand, Cracker, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Ben Harper, Kula Shaker, Presidents of the United States and have even had Jon Fishman (Phish) join the band for a SeepeopleS set during a Bernie Sanders rally. They have been featured in Paste Magazine, Datyrotter, Pop Matters, Magnet, Exclaim, High Times, Relix. DRUM Magazine, Blue Walrus and now Daytrotter, to name a short few. Their music has been used on Judging Amy (TNT), The Gates (ABC), and in feature films such as ‘Canvasman,’ and ‘Wheels Over Paradise,’ as well as on the Discovery Channel and NASCAR broadcasts. They provided most of the music for the Headcount (voting registration) documentary ‘Call To Action’ and have played CMJ, SXSW, as well as at major music festivals’ Wakarusa and Allgood Music Festival.

Recently the band released their newest EP, ‘HATE’ in 2017 as well as a video animated by Pete List (Celebrity Death Match/MTV, Marilyn Manson). The band has been on tour for the past couple years in support of their triple series of EP releases, ‘LOVE,’ ‘HATE,’ and ‘LIVE,’ which is scheduled for release this Christmas. All three EPs will be released digitally with some bonus tracks as ‘SeepeopleS LOVE HATE LIVE’ at that time as well. The band is also currently back in the studio finishing their eighth studio release already entitled Field Guide For Survival In This Dying World, and recently released the first two singles during the covid pandemic lockdown. The album is slated for a fall 2022 release, and features members of Morphine, Tim Reynolds (Dave Matthews Band), John Brown’s Body and Nikki Glaspie (Beyoncé, Nth Power Maceo Parker) to name a short few.

Denver Rare Beer Tasting to Return This September

July 10, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Denver Beer

DENVER, CO – Pints for Prostates is partnering with the Colorado Brewers Guild (CBG) to bring back one of Denver’s premier craft beer tasting events. Previously a signature event during Great American Beer Festival® (GABF) week, the 13th Annual Denver Rare Beer Tasting will take place during the Craft Brewers Conference® on Thursday, Sept. 9 from 1-5 p.m. at McNichols Civic Center Building.

This event will feature 60 of the country’s most highly regarded breweries pouring their most rare, unique, vintage and limited offerings. Tickets go on sale July 8 at 10 a.m. MST. Proceeds from this year’s event will support the missions of the Pints for Prostates campaign and the Colorado Brewers Guild.

“The Denver Rare Beer Tasting is a tradition that brings together craft brewers and fans to try beers that you normally can’t find and meet the people who make them,” says Rick Lyke, Founder of Pints for Prostates. “Last year we held the event remotely, so it has been 24 months since we’ve been able to come together to celebrate the passion and artistry of craft beer. We’re excited and cautious, taking appropriate steps to allow people to have a memorable, enjoyable and safe afternoon.”

The brewery list will be released shortly. It will include a mix of Colorado breweries and craft brewers from across the country.

“We’re really excited to join forces with Pints for Prostates to bring Denver Rare Beers back as an in-person event for 2021,” says Shawnee Adelson, Executive Director of the Colorado Brewers Guild. “The Denver Rare Beer Tasting is one of the most exclusive and highly anticipated beer events in the country, so it’s only fitting that the State of Craft Beer continues to host this iconic event.”

Denver Rare Beer Tasting tickets are $125 and go on sale July 8 at 10 a.m. MST. Entry to the Denver Rare Beer Tasting includes beer samples, individually wrapped lunch, limited edition tasting glass and a pen. In addition to the tasting, there will be an online silent auction featuring unique beer experiences and collectibles. As part of the event, a free men’s health screening will be hosted outside the McNichols Civic Center Building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Prostate Conditions Education Council will provide the free blood screening that takes less than five minutes to complete and screens for several common men’s health issues. This portion of the event is free to everyone; a Denver Rare Beer Tasting ticket is not needed.

As a 501(c)3 non-profit founded with men’s health at the core of its mission, Pints for Prostates takes the safety of attendees, volunteers and brewers very seriously. For this reason, everyone attending the Denver Rare Beer Tasting will be required to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test within 48 hours of the event to be admitted. This event will be at reduced capacity to allow for social distancing. The Beer Lovers Silent Auction will shift to an online format and safety precautions will be observed when it comes to the handling of glassware and pouring beer.

About Pints for Prostates

Pints for Prostates is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity that reaches men through the universal language of beer to encourage them to take charge of their health. The group was founded by prostate cancer survivor and beer writer Rick Lyke in 2008. The grassroots effort raises awareness among men about the importance of regular men’s health screenings by making appearances at beer festivals, social networking and pro bono advertising. According to the National Institutes of Health, during 2021 an estimated 248,530 new prostate cancer cases will be diagnosed in the U.S.

About the Colorado Brewers Guild

The Colorado Brewers Guild (CBG) is a nonprofit trade association with the mission to promote, protect, and propel independent craft breweries in the State of Craft Beer through advocacy, community, education, and public awareness. The majority of the state’s 400+ licensed breweries are members.

21st Amendment Brewery Celebrates 21st Birthday

July 10, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

San Francisco, Calif. – The 21st Amendment Brewery celebrates the right to be original as they host an epic birthday party at their San Leandro brewery on Saturday, August 21, 2021 (1pm – 7pm). The 21st Anniversary Party(a.k.a. Augustfest) salutes the major milestone of 21st Amendment turning 21 and what better way to ring in the festivities than to throw a big party, with collaboration brews, and release a new 21st Amendment beer.

Co-Founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan have been on an extraordinary and wonderful journey since opening their beloved SoMA brewpub in 2000. 21st Amendment Brewery invites the greater Bay Area community to hoist a pint with them on their big day.

In conjunction with the big bash and to acknowledge their brewing roots, 21st Amendment Brewery is releasing a new 21st Anniversary West Coast IPA in tribute to the hottest beer style that defined the brewing scene in 2000. Brewmaster Shaun O’Sullivan brews 21st Anniversary IPA with the past in mind, though with a modern twist by using an abundance of new world hops including Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Cashmere, and El Dorado hops. With robust hop flavors and aromas of grapefruit peel, lemon rind, and peppery pine sap with a restrained malt structure, 21st Anniversary IPA paves the way forward for a classic style adapting to a contemporary palate.

“Nostalgia is an incredible thing,” says Shaun O’Sullivan. “In many ways, it’s a form of revisionist history. A first love; an amazing meal; old TV shows with catchy jingles. Memories can take you back to the times when you enjoyed these things, but there are limits. West Coast Style IPAs are similar to those past memories. A seemingly by gone style underrepresented by the current wave of hazy and juicy IPAs ignores what was so fantastic about the discoveries of the moment in the mid-1990s. West Coast IPAs, a California origin style, defined an era of brewing and we want to showcase how the style changed everything for American craft beer.”

“To have our 21st Anniversary IPA distributed to 33 states across the country is an incredible culmination to everything Shaun and I and our amazing staff have worked so hard for these past 21 years,” adds Nico Freccia. “And to celebrate with our community this summer at our San Leandro production brewery is the perfect way to say a huge thanks for their ongoing support and a chance to come together for an amazing day enjoying beers, great food and fun in the sun.”

The 21st Anniversary Party features live music from East Bay Mud and Dr. D Band, a private cigar lounge, food trucks (Urban Roots BBQ, La Poblana, 21st Amendment Taproom Food Truck, and others), kids’ activities, and birthday beer collaborations with Fieldwork Brewing, Three Weavers, Urban Roots, Faction Brewery, and The Good Hop bottle shop. Shaun O’Sullivan teams up with each brewery’s head brewer for a limited-edition release to be available at the 21st Anniversary Party. 21st Amendment will also host an onsite farewell party for their neighbor Cleophus Quealy Brewery, who closed last year, with a pop-up beer tent pouring seven CQ beers.

Admission to the 21st Anniversary Party is free; beer and food purchases require tickets sold onsite at the brewery the day of the event. The 21st Anniversary Party is a General Admission event from 1pm – 7pm.

Anniversary West Coast IPA launches this month in 6-packs in all 33 states where 21st Amendment distributes.

About 21st Amendment Brewery

21 years ago (established in 2000), Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan opened the doors to the 21st Amendment brewpub in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood. In addition to quickly becoming one of the city’s favorite pubs, 21st Amendment began expanding beyond the Bay Area by helping to pioneer the movement to canned craft beer. Known for their witty names and delicious brews, 21st Amendment offers year-round selections, as well as seasonal offerings and their infamous once-in-a-while limited-edition releases. Sold in 33 states plus Washington D.C., 21st Amendment produces beer in its state-of-the-art brewery headquarters in San Leandro, California and is among the top 50 craft beer brewers in America.

River North Brewery Hosts Belgian Beer Bash with Release of Rum Barrel Quandary

July 9, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

River North BreweryDENVO, Color. – Belgian beers date back to at least the 12th century with low-alcohol beer that was preferred as a sanitary option to available drinking water. Since then it has expanded to many different styles that feature unique flavors that are often hard to come by in today’s world of hazy IPA’s, smoothie beers, and seltzers. River North Brewery, originally known for their Belgian-style beers, is hosting a Belgian Beer Bash at their Washington Street taproom on July 17th.

At 11.5% ABV, Rum Barrel Quandary is the perfect way to celebrate a day dedicated to Belgian beers. Rum Barrel Quandary hasn’t been released in over three years and for those die-hard fans that love Quandary, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the nice barrel-aged characteristics that give this raisin, bread-forward Belgian quad beer sweeter, caramel notes that linger and pair perfectly with MORE Belgian beers.

On top of the release of Rum Quandary, River North Brewery will be tapping over 10 other Belgian beers at their Washington Street taproom on July 17th. Starting at 1 pm, you’ll find a whole tap takeover including some rarities like a Double Dubbel, Last Guardian, other Quandary variants, and more to be announced as the date gets closer. When you order a full pour of one of the Belgian beers on tap you’ll get a Belgian glass to keep while glass supplies last. The taproom will also have pretzels from Styria Bakery, a local bakery that has some of the best pretzels and other baked goods in Denver.

Both River North Brewery taprooms will have Rum Barrel Quandary on tap and in 375ml bottles to go starting July 17th, but the real fun will happen at the 6021 N. Washington Street with the full Belgian tap takeover.
