Missoula’s Highlander Beer Elevates Hannah Talbott to President

October 24, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

HighlanderMissoula, Montana – Highlander Beer, originally founded in Missoula in 1910 and relaunched in 2015, has elevated Hannah Talbott to President. The company’s board of managers announced the promotion after sustained growth in distribution and a new brewery location planned. Talbott has served as the General Manager since 2017, and is part owner of the brewery.

“In an increasingly competitive market, Hannah has positioned Highlander to be one of the fastest growing breweries in Montana,” said Marc Pierce, Board Chairman of Highlander Beer. “Even through a global pandemic, Hannah’s leadership has led to steady growth, including plans to open a second location in Salmon, Idaho next year and expanded distribution of the fan favorite ‘Strange Haze’ and other canned beers into the Idaho market.”

Talbott attended the Siebel Institute in Chicago in 2012, where she completed the World Brewing Academy (WBA) Brewing Technology Program. She then received a Masters in Business Administration at Colorado State University in 2015. In 2016, Talbott became a Certified Cicerone. She went on to serve as brewer and CEO of a brewpub outside of Minneapolis before being hired by Highlander. A headshot of Talbott is attached to this email.

Highlander currently employs 35 team members. The brewery has 12 beers on tap at the taproom and five different beers that are packaged and sold as 6-packs in grocery stores and convenience stores all throughout the state of Montana. In addition to the taproom and restaurant, Highlander built a 200+ person outdoor event pavilion in 2018 to host private events such as weddings, graduation parties, and non-profit events.

Athletic Brewing Co. Releases First Non-Alcoholic Version of Brave Noise Pale Ale

October 23, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Athletic BrewingSAN DIEGO, CA — Athletic Brewing is proud to announce its collaboration with Brave Noise to brew the first-ever nonalcoholic release of the pale ale recipe. Athletic joins over 90 other breweries that have released Brave Noise to rally behind the organization’s powerful message. The release will be celebrated with a Brave Noise Release Party at Athletic Brewing’s San Diego brewery on October 24th.

Brave Noise is a global collaboration sparked by Brienne Allan, a brewer working at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts, when she posed the question “Have you ever experienced sexism in the beer industry?” Brienne’s question prompted stories of sexism, harassment, and assault experienced by countless women and went viral. The outpouring of stories shared on social media morphed into an industry movement and catalyst for industry change that led Brienne to develop the recipe for Brave Noise. The collaborative effort between breweries, microbreweries, and beer lovers seeks to make a long-term commitment to change and to provide safe and inclusive environments. Athletic Brewing will create the industry’s first nonalcoholic release of Brave Noise.

“With Brave Noise, we want breweries to create safe, supportive, and inclusive environments for staff and customers,” said Ash Eliot, of Women of the Bevolution and a spokesperson for Brave Noise. “By being part of this collab, Athletic is supporting our efforts and committing to the long-term work that needs to be done. We hope this initiative is a step in the direction to a better, safer, and discrimination-free beer world.”

Cara Wilson, one of Athletic’s San Diego-based brewers, is spearheading the collaboration. “I feel very honored to brew BraveNoise for Athletic Brewing,” said Cara. “I’m proud of Athletic notonly for this effort but proud to be part of an organization that iscommitted to creating an inclusive environment internally and who iscommitted to speaking out and advocating for others.”

All proceeds from this limited release will benefit Hollaback!, a non-profit organization that is an official Brave Noise partner. Hollaback!’s mission is to create safe spaces for underserved communities and end toxic culture by educating and empowering bystanders and victims of harassment. Athletic Brewing is going above and beyond the requirement to donate the proceeds to an approved non-profit, committing $25,000 to Hollaback!.

Brave Noise is a dry-hopped pale ale with a peachy nose, creamy mouthfeel, fruity notes of tangerine, mango, and stone fruit, and a balanced bitterness. This delicious and refreshingly fruity brew will be available from Athletic Brewing exclusively at their event in October. Single cans will be handed out and 6-packs will be available for purchase. The free event, the first at Athletic’s San Diego brewery, willfeature, of course, Brave Noise and other Athletic Brewing beers.

Local band Find Indigo will perform live, and vendors such as Women’sCraft Beer Collective, Rebelle for Kicks, Can She Dig It, Found &Freed, Abrigo, Dimension Z Art, Grandma Lois’ Closet, Plant YourIntention, and The Bountiful Bag, will all sell their merchandise atthe event. All onsite vendors are led by women, BIPOC, and/or membersof the LGBTQ+ community.

As part of the partnership, Brave Noise has to review the code of conduct of organizations that want to brew their beer, which inspired Athletic Brewing to engage in candid voluntary meetings between the founders, head of HR, director of their JEDI program, and Athletic team members. This led to the enactment of an initiative that protects salespeople from interacting with external accounts they don’t feel safe working with by providing a safety net to cover the income lost by the account.

“We want teammates to feel safe coming forward and not to be financially trapped in an unhealthy situation,” said Alex Showerman, Athletic Brewing’s director of JEDI and non-profit partnerships. “The goal was to take our code of conduct a step further by creating an actionable step for our team members that empowers them and holds our industry accountable. If you don’t uphold our code of conduct, then wewon’t work with you.”

“We felt it was really important to make sure that there was a level of accountability outside of our walls,” added Athletic Brewing’s CEO and co-founder Bill Shufelt on working with team members to assess where they felt unsafe. In an effort to share best practices in eliminating toxic workplace culture, Athletic Brewing Co.’s code of conduct will be available via a QR code on every can of Brave Noise. Through partnerships with great organizations like Brave Noise and Hollaback, the beer industry can make essential strides forward.

Rockwell Beer Garden Opens in Francis Park

October 23, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Rockwell BeerST. LOUIS – Rockwell Beer Co. announced Friday, Oct. 22 as the official opening day of the Rockwell Beer Garden in Francis Park. Located in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood of South St. Louis, Rockwell Beer Garden will offer a family-friendly food menu featuring thin-crust party-cut pizzas, salads, dips, snacks and grab-and-go items, as well as a selection of the brewer’s craft beers, along with wine and cocktails. The beer garden will be open, weather permitting, through the middle of December. Days and hours will be posted weekly on social media and on the Rockwell Beer website.

The walk-up food counter, concession stand and outdoor dining/gathering space are located within and surrounding a fully rehabbed and reimagined 1929 “comfort center” building adjacent to the Francis Park tennis and pickleball courts. The City of St. Louis Department of Parks recently added four pickleball courts to the park in addition to resurfacing the existing tennis courts. Rockwell will offer rental of pickleball equipment for guests looking to play one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States.

“As a city resident who lives in the neighborhood, I made certain that creating a safe and welcoming environment was our top priority,” said Rockwell Beer Co. co-founder Heather Sanders. “Before we swung a hammer, we asked for input from residents and park users to make sure we were adding useful amenities to one of the city’s best parks. From new lighting and extensive facility upgrades to improved restrooms and an expanded patio with spacious seating and native plantings, this new interpretation of the comfort-center space respects the neighborhood’s history while enhancing visitors’ experience in the park. This project embraces David R. Francis’ original desire that the park bearing his name be used and maintained for recreational uses and purposes”.

Earlier this summer, Rockwell hired chef Michael Petres as its culinary director to develop the food program at the Beer Garden. Petres is a veteran of the St. Louis food scene, having served stints at The Ritz-Carlton, Balaban’s, ARAKA and Terrene. He spent 10 years at Niche Food Group, rising to the position of corporate executive chef overseeing all the company’s culinary operations. Rockwell also named longtime team member Nancy Etzkorn to serve as the Beer Garden’s general manager. Etzkorn was one of the first employees at Rockwell’s Tasting Room in The Grove and later developed the brewery’s successful To-Go-Beer concept.

“We’ve assembled an excellent team with deep experience, coupled with great beer, outstanding food and thoughtful design,” said Rockwell Beer Co. co-founder Chris Hulse. “Our goal for this project is to recapture the sense of community and pride that has been a major component of this city’s history. St. Louis was once filled with beer gardens. Our hope is that this will be a catalyst for other public-private ventures throughout the city. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built, and I can’t wait to welcome guests.”

About Rockwell Beer Co.

Launched in St. Louis in 2018, the Rockwell Beer Co. brewery and tasting room has been a gathering place for both the beer obsessed and casual drinker to stop by, grab a beer and stay awhile. Head brewer Jonathan Moxey – operating under the mantra: “Beer should be fun, not fussy” – is obsessed with creating well-balanced beers for every palate. Using Rockwell’s 15-barrel brewhouse located at 1320 Vandeventer Ave., Moxey and his team are free to experiment with new varieties, both at the tasting room and out in the Saint Louis market. The resulting offerings range from time-honored classics to future experimental and include such fan favorites as Passing Clouds Witbier, Stand By Hoppy Pilsner, Velour Tracksuit IPA and Moonbase Porter.

WeldWerks Brewing and Little Man Ice Cream Company Create Little Man Ice Cream Stout

October 22, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

WeldWerks BrewingGREELEY, Colorado – Two Colorado culinary creators got together one sunny afternoon to enjoy an unlikely pairing: beer and ice cream. After a couple of pints and several scoops of ice cream, WeldWerks Brewing Co. and Little Man Ice Cream decided to make magic happen.

“After learning about each other’s businesses and how we each approach flavor combinations, we learned that we shared a lot of similarities,” says WeldWerks Innovation and Wood Cellar Lead Skip Schwartz. “We both have that out-of-the-box thinking on flavors and creativity but we’re committed to quality above all else, which means that neither company is truly ever done improving on quality and innovation.”

To commemorate their like-minded concepts, the team decided to turn Little Man’s iconic Salted Oreo ice cream into beer.

When it comes to flavor and ingredient-driven beers, such as their Watermelon Cotton Candy Sour or Coffee Coconut Stout, WeldWerks nails it every time, creating liquid versions of their food inspirations. At 6.5 percent ABV, Little Man Salted Oreo Stout emulates it’s ice cream counterpart with additions of vanilla, oreos, Salted Oreo ice cream from Little Man, and of course, salt. The result is an ice cream stout with a smooth and velvety mouthfeel and a sweetness from the ice cream that is balanced by a hint of salt.

“The process of making beer and ice cream are quite different, but both stem from a proper combination of ingredients to make the best consistency, flavor, and quality product,” says Little Man Ice Cream Company Production Manager Sarah Hegge. “I want to commend the team at WeldWerks for bringing such inventive and exciting flavors to life. It is remarkable just how well they end up matching the taste to the name on the can!”

WeldWerks’ Little Man Salted Oreo Stout will be available at the Greeley taproom, on Friday, Oct. 22, depending on quality control release hold. The beer will also be available in cans and on draft within WeldWerks’ distribution footprint.

“Little Man Ice Cream is legenda(i)ry and we’re thrilled to partner with them,” says Schwartz. “With the Little Man team, we’ll be turning one of our fan favorite beers into ice cream next so stay tuned!”

ABOUT LITTLE MAN ICE CREAM COMPANY

The Little Man Ice Cream Company was founded in 2008 with the launch of Little Man Ice Cream, a 28-foot tall milk can-shaped shop in Denver’s Lower Highland neighborhood. Inspired by vintage Coney Island hot dog-shaped stands, the shop serves as a community hub hosting a wide array of seasonal celebrations, fundraisers, and programming throughout the summer including movie nights, live music, swing dancing, and game nights ranging from bingo to trivia.

Since its founding, Little Man Ice Cream Company has focused on crafting micro-batch ice cream and sorbet with some of the finest, locally sourced ingredients possible and produced one small batch at a time to ensure premium quality. The company sells its ice cream through more than 60 wholesale clients as well as its six stores including the original Little Man, Sweet Cooie’s, Constellation, The Factory, Old Town Churn, and DANG Soft Serve. It is also available at Denver International Airport’s Little Man Ice Cream on Concourse C.

Committed to community improvement and global philanthropy, Little Man fights hunger through its “Scoop for Scoop” initiative. For every scoop of ice cream the shop sells, one scoop of rice or beans is donated to villages in developing countries. Donations have been made in Ethiopia, Kenya, Myanmar, Senegal, Haiti, Cambodia, Guatemala, and Peru. Little Man is equally committed to fighting hunger at home and works with Colorado food banks, farmers, and homeless shelters to provide relief. Since opening, the shop has donated over five million scoops, making all who buy ice cream at Little Man philanthropists in their own right.

About Melvin Brewing

Melvin Brewing was born in the back of a Thai restaurant in 2009, when founder Jeremy Tofte decided to bring beers from the future to Jackson, WY.  A 20-gallon brew system quickly grew into a 3-barrel system, and award-winning beers like Melvin IPA, 2×4 Double IPA and Ch-Ch-Cherry Bomb were served alongside Asian street food, classic kung fu films and old school hip-hop. After winning Small Brewpub of the Year at Great American Beer Festival in 2015, a 30-barrel production facility was opened in Alpine, Wyoming, population 750.  Shortly thereafter, Melvin started shipping beer across the U.S. and went on to win Brewery Group of the Year at GABF in 2017.  Embracing the chaos and riding the wave, Melvin Brewing is now ready to take its world-class beers on a worldwide tour.

About Kühl

KÜHL’s story as an independent brand began in the snow-covered peaks of the Wasatch Mountains.  Relentless weather and challenging conditions taught us that if you’re courageous, remain humble, stay hungry, are kind to your community, then the independents will thrive.  We don’t have shareholders or VC investors. Our livelihood depends on you and your satisfaction with our product. We never forget it.

Tröegs’ Mad Elf Gets Festive New Look

October 20, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Troegs BrewingHERSHEY, Pennsylvania – Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of its iconic holiday ale, Mad Elf. Created in collaboration with Florida-based illustrator Joshua Noom, the festive new label art is the fourth iteration of the beloved – and mischievous – Tröegs character since 2002.

“We have a history of reimagining the Elf,” says Tröegs brother Chris Trogner. “Mad Elf is a beer that really captures the holidays for so many people. And not just beer lovers. A lot of people who don’t regularly drink beer have a special connection with Mad Elf. This new art really captures what people love about it – it’s festive, nostalgic, and a whole lot of fun.”

The essence of this once-a-year holiday ale, along with its ruby red glow, is born from five varieties of tree-ripened cherries. Bing, Lambert, Van and Royal contribute a bright and juicy sweetness, while Montmorency adds a touch of tartness.

Aside from cherries, honey is the other integral ingredient in Mad Elf. Each year, Tröegs sources 25,000 pounds of local wildflower honey from The Happy Beekeeper in Carlisle, PA.

“We like to say that it’s not the holidays until you’ve had your first Mad Elf,” says Tröegs brewmaster John Trogner.

Mad Elf releases today in 12-oz. bottles and cans throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, followed by everywhere else Tröegs is sold over the next few weeks. Look for Mad Elf on draft beginning in mid-November.

Venice Based House Beer Launches Family of Radlers

October 17, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Venice House Beer’s mission has always been “One Beer Done Right”, but recently a second style caught their eye. They began to notice the serious lack of quality Radler’s.

It occurred to House Beer that a great Radler starts with one thing—a great Lager, which House happens to know a little bit about. So, maybe one more beer done right is more appropriate.

Last year, House crafted their first ever, limited edition Radler by combining fresh grapefruit juice with our premium lager. The Grapefruit Radler just made sense, because it was something that they’d want to drink. After finding that friends and family felt the same way, we decided to take it a step further and bring more attention to this oft-forgotten style.

Since that first toe dip into the world of Radlers, House returned to the drawing board, developing a flight of Premium Crafted Radlers built on the foundation of our one and only House Lager. Not to mention that this line also steps into the ”better-for-you” space considering the low-cal, low-ABV specs of the new offerings.

The details:

•The Grapefruit Radler – (Same Great Taste!)

•The Salted Lime Radler

•The Tropical Radler – (Pineapple + Orange + Guava)

•The Mango Radler

New formulation for all our new Radler line:

•3.2% ABV

•110 calories

•5 g residual sugar

New packaging:

•Sleek 12 oz cans

•Pressure Sensitive Label application

•Single flavor 6pk Cans (all four flavors available)

•Variety 12pk Cans (three cans of each flavor)

Founders Releases KBS Cinnamon Vanilla Cocoa

October 17, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Founders Brewing

Here’s one for the cocoa lovers: KBS Cinnamon Vanilla Cocoa – the sumptuous, deep coffee and chocolate flavors of KBS rise to the next level with a swirl of cinnamon and a hint of vanilla to create a sweet-but-not-too-sweet barrel-aged drinking experience. It’s a whole new spin on KBS that’s sure to sweeten your spirits. 12.0% ABV.

Now to make your day even better, we’re also welcoming back this fan-favorite KBS

KBS gets its coffee fix in the very first variant to come from our beloved bourbon barrel-aged stout. Yes, KBS may already be brewed with coffee, but it gets some extra oomph when it’s aged on espresso beans after being removed from barrels. The result is a fresh and snappy coffee twist on our classic barrel-aged beer. Who says you can’t start your day with a barrel-aged stout? 12.0% ABV.

These two new KBS flavors will join the original KBS (available year-round!) in 4-packs of 12oz bottles and on draft starting this October (no draft in UT and no distribution PERIOD in Mississippi!).

Cheers!
