National Beer Can Appreciation Day – January 24

January 24, 2022 by Dow Scoggins

National Beer Can Appreciation Day - Krueger Beer CanHistory of National Beer Can Appreciation Day
Beer has been one of the staples of health and diet for thousands of years, and there are those who say that access to Beer is one of the reasons that the slaves of Egypt were able to build those huge pyramids. The ability to preserve calories and not rot cannot be underestimated! While back then the beverage was held in clay vessels, the container of choice today is the aluminum can. This tradition was first started in 1935, and on the heels of it came a never ending parade of varieties of labelling.

Canned beer makes its debut on January 24, 1935. In partnership with the American Can Company, the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company delivered 2,000 cans of Krueger’s Finest Beer and Krueger’s Cream Ale to faithful Krueger drinkers in Richmond, Virginia. Ninety-one percent of the drinkers approved of the canned beer, driving Krueger to give the green light to further production.

By the late 19th century, cans were instrumental in the mass distribution of foodstuffs, but it wasn’t until 1909 that the American Can Company made its first attempt to can beer. This was unsuccessful, and the American Can Company would have to wait for the end of Prohibition in the United States before it tried again. Finally in 1933, after two years of research, American Can developed a can that was pressurized and had a special coating to prevent the fizzy beer from chemically reacting with the tin.

The concept of canned beer proved to be a hard sell, but Krueger’s overcame its initial reservations and became the first brewer to sell canned beer in the United States. The response was overwhelming. Within three months, over 80 percent of distributors were handling Krueger’s canned beer, and Krueger’s was eating into the market share of the “big three” national brewers–Anheuser-Busch, Pabst and Schlitz. Competitors soon followed suit, and by the end of 1935, over 200 million cans had been produced and sold.

My Personal favorite beer can:

Deschutes Brewery Launches Non-Alcoholic Version of Legacy Porter, Black Butte

January 23, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Deschutes BreweryBEND, Oregon – Deschutes announces the release of a groundbreaking non-alcoholic dark beer, Black Butte Non-Alcoholic. The legendary Black Butte Porter was the inspiration behind this latest innovation – the beer that put the small-town brewery on the map in 1988 remains the #1 selling porter in the U.S..  Through three decades of innovation and experimentation, Deschutes has remained committed to extending their pursuit of quality to nontraditional craft beer styles that offer a unique value to their customers. Black Butte Non-Alcoholic is a high-quality non-alcoholic beer that rivals the experience of a full-strength craft beer.

“The non-alcoholic (NA) category is currently heavy with light beers, just as the craft beer market was at the brewery’s founding in 1988,” said Veronica Vega director of product development for Deschutes. “We’re introducing a porter into this growing category to show that high quality, drinkable, and delicious NA beer can come in all styles. NA beer drinkers don’t have to settle for light beers.”

Deschutes began their foray in the NA category with their Non-Alcoholic Irish Style Dark first released in 2020 as a small pilot run. Despite the limited volume and visibility, the response to the beer was overwhelmingly positive. Based on this consumer response and winning the Country Winner Award at the World Beer Awards and a Silver medal at the U.S. Beer Championships in the Non-Alc Stout/Porter category, this proof point gave Deschutes the confidence to replicate their legacy beer.

“Given our history, our customers agree that it makes sense for us to kick off our path in non-alcoholic beers with the style that put Deschutes on the map – porter,” said Vega.

Black Butte Non-Alcoholic utilizes the same specialty malts and hops as the original for a full-flavor experience with notes of rich chocolate, coffee, and a roasted finish.  Deschutes partners with Sustainable Beverage Technologies using their patented BrewVo® technology that creates a real beer experience through a unique method that gently manages alcohol while maintaining flavor and aroma. The beer fully ferments to create the most mentally satisfying non-alcoholic beer drinking experience. Through rigorous experimentation, Deschutes now has a non-alcoholic beer that delivers a true beer drinking experience worthy of the name “Black Butte.”

“It’s so similar to the real thing that people are often surprised that it’s non-alcoholic. This beer is a way for us to connect with a growing population of people who are looking to reap the health benefits of an alcohol reduced or alcohol-free lifestyle and still enjoy the act of drinking beer.”  Deschutes is releasing non-alcoholic Black Butte in 12 ounce, 6-pack cans in their pubs and tasting room, throughout Oregon in independent accounts, and direct to consumers through their website later this month. Black Butte Non-Alcoholic will release across the U.S. to the brewery’s full distribution footprint this March.

Shiner Announces New Entry Into the IPA Category with Flagship Release of Tex Hex IPA Franchise

January 22, 2022 by Mike Curme

SHINER, Texas – The independent, family-owned makers of the iconic Shiner Bock introduce their new IPA series, Shiner Tex Hex IPA, beginning with the launch of the flagship Bruja’s Brew, a mystical IPA brewed with cactus water. Fans of Shiner have consistently requested the brand have a bigger presence in IPA, the largest and fastest-growing beer category in the U.S. Bruja’s Brew will be the first of three new IPAs launched under the Tex Hex umbrella in 2022.

Tex Hex Bruja’s Brew is a mythical IPA brewed with cactus water and Amarillo hops, an ode to the brand’s Texas roots. The beer delivers a hops-forward aroma and flavor that is a mix of bright, citrusy, resinous and tropical, featuring a medley of tangerine, pineapple, citrus and stone fruit. Initial consumer testing revealed that the brew outperformed the leading national and local IPA offerings in a series of blind tastings.

To capture the imagination of IPA drinkers, Shiner is also introducing the character of “La Bruja”, the alchemist, who is prominently featured on Tex Hex cans and packaging. La Bruja is a dark, mysterious shaman who roams the Texas desert gathering ingredients for her otherworldly creations. Brewed with fire, magic, and sin, her IPAs are only for the worthy, the ones called by the wind.

“Shiner could not be more excited by the launch of Tex Hex IPA. Shiner fans have demanded that we get back in the IPA category, and we believe Tex Hex delivers in a groundbreaking way,” says Matt Pechman, Shiner Beers Head of Marketing. “With unique Southwestern ingredients like cactus water, and a taste that we know connects with IPA drinkers, we are incredibly proud of this beer. We can’t wait to see what else La Bruja has in store for us in 2022 and beyond.”

Tex Hex Bruja’s Brew IPA (7% ABV) is rolling out in limited distribution in Texas and nationally throughout January with plans for a full-scale launch in the spring. It will be sold in 6-and 12 pack cans, with additional formats to come in the future.

Wallenpaupack Brewing Company Creates New Beer Series Devoted to Bottom Fermented Beers

January 22, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Wallenpaupack Brewing Brews LagersHAWLEY, Pennsylvania – Wallenpaupack Brewing Company, the award-winning craft brewery, brewpub & taproom, located adjacent to Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos region of Pennsylvania, unveiled a new beer series entirely devoted to a hugely popular, but often overlooked style of craft beer: lagers.

Lagers were produced as far back as 1400s by monks, but they began gaining in popularity with the rise of European lagers in the 1800s. Fermented and conditioned under cool conditions with yeast fermentation taking place on the bottom of the tank, they come in a variety of colors, ranging from pale to black, depending on the malts used. They are enjoyed all over the world and are the most commercially available and widely consumed style of beer, despite the recent surge in popularity for craft ales (particularly IPAs).

“Today’s craft beer consumer craves IPAs, and for good reason – they’re delicious. However, it’s a common misconception that all ales are full-flavored while lagers are bland or less flavorful,” said Logan Ackerley, Head Brewer of Wallenpaupack Brewing Company. “We believe there is opportunity to prove that lager-style beers can be equally delicious and even more complex, and we’re excited about this new initiative to showcase the best in lager style beers.”

The first beer in the brewery’s “For the Love of Lager” series is a Zwickelbier, an unfiltered German-style lager that is brewed entirely with Vienna malt and noble hops. It’s packed with flavor, easy to drink and complex in its taste. In its limited appearance, the beer has already attracted a wide audience at the brewpub – from the new beer explorer to the highly educated craft beer drinker.

“With our Zwickelbier, we used decoction mashing to develop flavors we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to create. The result is a bready, sweetly malty tasting beer with slightly nutty flavors that is easy to drink and extremely well balanced” added Ackerley.

“For the Love of Lager” series promises some exciting iterations in the months ahead. Plans include new lager beers inspired by regions all over the world – from the Far East to Europe.

“Since we opened our doors in 2017, we have prided ourselves on offering a wide variety of beer options for our customers to enjoy and explore,” said Becky Ryman, owner of Wallenpaupack Brewing Company. “We can’t wait to see what Logan plans to brew in the months ahead – his beers will only add to our growing craft lager category while introducing and familiarizing more customers to this beloved style of beer.”

About Wallenpaupack Brewing Company
Wallenpaupack Brewing Company is an award-winning brewery located in Hawley, Pennsylvania and a taproom located in nearby Tafton, Pennsylvania. Both locations are adjacent to Lake Wallenpaupack, the state’s second-largest man-made lake, in the Pocono mountains. Inspired by the lake, the brewery produces a variety of exceptional craft beers that offer refreshment and complexity for any occasion. Independently owned and operated by Becky Ryman since 2017, Wallenpaupack Brewing Company is committed to independence, exceptional craft brewing and the community which is its home.

Non-Alc Craft Beer, RationAle Brewing, Announces Official Launch

January 22, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

RationAle BeerSAN DIEGO, California – Alcohol-conscious consumers and craft beer enthusiasts alike are getting a welcomed upgrade to their alternative beverage options, this January, with the launch of RationAle Brewing and its line of small-batch, non-alcoholic craft beers, now available online nationwide as well as in select retailers and on-premise outlets throughout the U.S. West Coast.

Working closely with Northern California-based Barrel Brothers Brewing Company, that specializes in craft beer and spirits, RationAle’s first two SKUs — Totally Rational Citrus Hazy IPA and Rational Vibes Cerveza — are produced using Barrel Brother’s state-of-the art dealcoholization technology, called ‘continuous flow vacuum distillation.’ This distillation technology allows for beer to be brewed and fermented with the same methods and quality of an alcoholic beer, with the alcohol gently removed at moderate temperatures with minimal impact to the flavor or characteristics of the originally fermented beer.

-Totally Rational Hazy IPA – A crushable Hazy, grapefruit-forward brew with a blend of citrus notes from fresh hops

-Rational Vibes Cerveza – A classic Mexican lager with a crisp and refreshing flavor to quench your thirst

Served in 16 oz. cans, the two SKUs are already adding variety, flavor and innovation to the fast-growing U.S. non-alcohol beer category, as rational options to enjoy craft beer in moderation.

“My love for delicious craft beer is what drove me here, in the first place, and the desire to prove that an alcohol-conscious lifestyle for those of us seeking more moderation didn’t have to come with sacrifice — or constant rationalizing; that’s when RationAle Brewing came to life,” said Jamie Fay, Founder of RationAle Brewing. “Through the strategic industry partnerships we already have in place, our team’s industry expertise spans manufacturing, research and development, marketing, public relations and sales, with more than 50 years of combined experience. This will, without a doubt, be a key driver of our success in the booming NA category, by increasing distribution, scaling our team, and innovating our products quickly and effectively.”

As his first entrepreneurial venture as a founder, Fay brings more than 25 years of global leadership experience within the CPG industry. Previously, Fay worked for companies such as E & J Gallo Winery, Danone, Mars Incorporated and Hain Celestial Group, as well as early startup food, beverage and cannabis brands, where he acted as President and CEO to support strategic brand growth and sales execution.

RationAle also took on equity partners, Zach Minard, Founder of Tall Trees Design Co. — an independent branding and design studio with extensive craft beer experience — and Jess Windell, Founder and CEO of Maven Consulting — a performance PR and consulting firm specializing in CPG food and beverage — to support the go-to-market strategy and growth of the brand, alongside Fay.

“When Jamie came to me with the concept of RationAle and its line of bold, flavorful, non-alcoholic craft beers, he shared with it the idea that you shouldn’t have to be torn between having another delicious craft beer or avoiding one due to the effects of alcohol, and the aspiration of being able to do it all without sacrifice. The visual representation of that is what I built the brand on,” said Minard. “With Jamie at the helm of the operation — his robust industry network, unwavering ambition and entrepreneurial spirit — the success of RationAle is undeniable, and I can’t wait to continue building this brand into a category steward within an industry for which I have so much personal passion.”

With its January 2022 launch via eCommerce and expanding retail doors, RationAle is paving the way for future innovation and expansion within the U.S. non-alcoholic beer category which is expected to reach $3B in annual sales by 2025. The trend is being led by consumers desiring more mindful consumption around alcohol, with 58% of consumers reporting switching between alcohol and no- or low-alcohol beverages on the same occasion.

“We’ve seen the conversations around alcohol consumption shift within the consumer, social and media landscapes over the last few years, and especially with more time spent at home, taking the topic of ‘drinking in moderation’ from taboo to trendy, which is apparent by the emergence of non-alc brands within the wine, spirits and beer categories,” said Windell. “One taste of RationAle and you immediately notice the full body and delicious flavor notes of this premium beer. That’s what gets us most excited, as no amount of funding nor branding alone can generate genuine endorsements without the quality and superior taste of the product to back it up.”

All of RationAle’s flavor-forward brews are served in 16oz. cans, made with high-quality ingredients and in small batches, mimicking the bold, refreshing taste of traditional craft beer.

As of this month, RationAle’s Totally Rational Citrus Hazy IPA and Rational Vibes Cerveza are available via eCommerce and continue to carve out desirable beer fridge real estate in strategic West Coast retail and on-premise partners, including Seaside Market, Mother’s Market, MRKT SPACE, Mollie Stones, Lassens, Market of Choice and Brewsters Beer Garden, with more customers onboarding in the coming months.

Following the official launch, RationAle has plans to grow and further establish its portfolio of beers and team throughout California, Oregon and Washington — across sales, brand marketing and events — and innovate its offerings to build upon existing product lines.

About RationAle Brewing

RationAle Brewing offers an innovative variety of small-batch, non-alcoholic craft beers for those seeking to embrace moderation while drinking consciously and living boldly.

Founded in 2021 by Jamie Fay and officially launching into the non-alcohol craft beer category in early 2022, RationAle is rooted in the idea of embracing moderation without sacrifice,

Brewed by a Barrel Brothers Brewing Company, a dynamic and experienced craft brewery in Northern California, RationAle’s first two products — a Totally Rational Citrus Hazy IPA and a Rational Vibes Cerveza — are produced using a proprietary distillation technology to gently remove alcohol from the brewed beer, with minimal effects to its integrity and overall quality.

Island Brands USA’s Significant Fourth-Quarter Growth Paves the Way for Geographic and Product-Line Expansions in 2022

January 21, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Island BrandsCHARLESTON, South Carolina – Island Brands USA, a family ofsuperpremium beers enjoyed by active, socially conscious consumers, announced tremendous fourth-quarter results and year-to-date performance, launching the company into a period of unprecedented retail expansion and product innovation.

Despite supply-chain issues that have slowed down other companies, Island Brand’s latest IRI results show consistent and considerable growth. American-brewed and American-owned, Island Brands’ crisp, clean, crushable beers — Island Coastal Lager, Island Active, Island Lemonada, and Island Southern Peach — are the fastest-growing super premium domestic beers in the Southeast U.S. Across Georgia and North Carolina, Island Active is growing at rates of 157% and 120%, respectively, making it the No. 1 fastest-growing super premium domestic beer in those states — places that know their beer!

Island Brands’ dedicated distribution partners have allowed the company to enlarge its reach, maintain momentum, and fuel long-term success and sustainability. Plans are being finalized to expand Gulf Coast distribution into Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana in early 2022, and the company aims to go offshore as well, exploring retail sales in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. Island Brands currently is available on board all Carnival Cruise ships, earning 11+ million brand impressions annually. A key growth strategy in 2022 will be adding small, independent retailers like convenience stores and gas stations to complement Island Brands’ presence in large grocers and liquor shops.

“We’re aligning our processes with ourwholesalers, and providing them with factual data on a routine basis to help us all grow—and it’s working,” said Valarie Williams, Island Brands’ Director of Operations. “Knowing their data needs, knowing how they operate, and trusting in their expertise has had a tremendous impact on our rates of sale.”

Added ChrisDayock, VP of National Accounts at J.J. Taylor Distributing of Florida: “We have enjoyed a nice growth trend of Island Brands beers in 2021 highlighted by two BOGO events at our largest customer, Publix, and we are glad to see the formulation of a C-Store strategy to address that important channel of trade. The folks at Island Brands have been very instrumental in navigating the supply chain successfully during these challenging times. It’s refreshing to do business with the kind of laser focus and clear objectives that Island Brands brings to the table.”

Product innovations in store for 2022 include glass packaging, new flavors like Island Pomelo Grapefruit, and an exciting expansion of the Island Active line with a new variety pack.

Lakewood Brewing’s Tangerine Queen Now Available Year Round

January 21, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Lakewood BrewingDALLAS, Texas – Lakewood Brewing has upgraded last year’s smash seasonal Tangerine Queen, an American Wheat beer with orange peel and tangerine, to year-round availability.

“Since citrus are winter fruits we decided to release Tangerine Queen at the peak harvest season,” said Wim Bens, President and Founder of Lakewood Brewing. “Tangerine Queen was a huge hit for us last year so we decided to make it a year-round offering. It’s just such an easy drinking beer with tangerine aroma up front, sweet citrus in the middle, and a soft finish. Perfect for any day of the year.”

A fresh batch will kick off in the brewery Taproom at 2302 Executive Drive in Garland TX, and will be available on shelves statewide next month. The curious and the die-hard can visit Lakewood’s Beer Finder to find it at a store or bar near them, or go online to order for a Taproom pickup.

Additionally, the news on the street is that Lakewood has another Queen in the works for this spring. More on that in the coming weeks!
