Firestone Walker Unveils Parabola 2022

February 19, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Firestone WalkerPASO ROBLES, California – Firestone Walker’s iconic Parabola barrel-aged stout is back with a few new twists for 2022, including a new limited “Paraboloid” spinoff.

Parabola: Vintage 2022

The story begins with the latest vintage of Parabola, which was aged for a year in 12-year-old Heaven Hill bourbon barrels for the first time ever.

“Historically, we’ve aged Parabola in six to eight-year-old bourbon barrels, but this time we seized the opportunity to age it in older barrels,” said Barrel Program Manager Eric Ponce. “It adds a new dimension to what people have come to know and love about Parabola.”

According to Ponce, the older-stock barrels accentuated Parabola’s signature flavors of black cherry, dark chocolate and vanilla with vintage-specific notes of stone fruit, fudge and tobacco. “You get extra layers of complexity that make the drinking experience all the more edifying,” Ponce said.

Parabola 2022 is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets in individually boxed 12-ounce bottles, and is available at all Firestone Walker locations and online at FirestoneBeer.com.

Introducing Paraboloid

This year, Parabola is joined by Paraboloid, a limited small-batch spinoff aged in an equal selection of rare older-stock barrels from premium spirits producers—specifically 14-year-old Old Fitzgerald bourbon barrels and 18-year-old Sazerac rye whiskey barrels.

These barrels complemented Parabola’s classic flavor profile by imparting hints of stone fruits, fudge, leather and peppery spice. Additionally, the beer was aged for a full two years prior to blending and bottling.

“The extra year of aging allowed all of the flavors to meld and create an incredibly smooth, mellow and prodigiously flavorful beer,” Ponce said.

About Firestone Walker

Founded by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker in 1996, Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a California beer company with three innovative brewing facilities. Firestone Walker’s main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. The Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers and limited local offerings. Firestone Walker is also the brewery behind 805, one of the nation’s fastest-growing beers. Firestone Walker was recently named “Best American Brewery of the Decade” by Paste Magazine.

Rogue Adds Gumberoo West Coast IPA as the Newest Monster of IPA

February 18, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

NEWPORT, Oregon –  In 2019 beer lovers met and fell in love with the hazy and mysterious Batsquatch. In 2021 the big and bold Colossal Claude joined the fun. And in 2022, Rogue Ales & Spirits is thrilled to introduce fans to the piney and protective Gumberoo, the newest monster to join the Monsters of IPA crew. Gumberoo West Coast IPA, Rogue’s newest year-round offering, has a subtle hop aroma with piney hop flavors up front that give way to a light tropical fruit body. The finish is a nice blend of malts, fruit and pine with a lingering bitterness.

“The story of the Gumberoo is a fascinating one that we can all learn from,” says Hagen Moore, VP of Marketing and Creative. “As the story goes, three loggers were camped in the woods drinking beers and entertaining the idea of illegally harvesting old growth sequoias for extra cash when the ground suddenly shook with a heavy footstep. Bigger than a bear with wild eyes and jagged teeth, the Gumberoo rose from behind a stump with a mighty roar. As the loggers scrambled to escape, beer spilled onto the fire causing smoke to fill the air. Some say the forest only wanted to send them a warning that night as this stroke of smokey fortune helped hold off the Gumberoo while the loggers got away. So remember to respect our forests, put out your fires and always bring cold beer camping.”

PRODUCT FACTS: Gumberoo

Style: West Coast IPA

ABV: 6.8%

IBU: 66

Packaging: 6-pack 12 oz can, draft

Availability: Year-round

Buoy Beer Company Releases the Fifth Vintage of Its Barrel-aged Barleywine Series

February 18, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Buoy Beer CompanyASTORIA, OREGON – Buoy Beer Company released its fifth vintage of their Love, Lost at Sea barrel-aged barleywine on February 14th. Strong and complex, this vintage is aged in Freeland Spirits bourbon barrels for 10 months to give it a smooth, sweetly toasted flavor.

A piquant and distinctive malt character rounds out the profile using a dense grist of British pale, British Crystal, and Chocolate malts, all balanced by a healthy dose of Oregon hops. This warm, harmonious ale shines a light on the tangle of love gone adrift.

“It’s hard to believe we’re on year five with this barleywine,” says Toby Armstrong, Lead Brewer. “We’ve seen a lot of change in the brewery since our first release of Love, Lost at Sea. Lots of folks have come and gone, the brewery itself has undergone multiple expansions, and very little looks the same around here — but this beer has remained, in many ways, unchanged. While the older vintages have mellowed out, this year’s Love, Lost at Sea has a toasty, drying character like cavendish tobacco. Hints of vanilla and graham cracker lurk in the backdrop. Like a fishing story, this is a beer that grows bigger and better with every retelling.”

Last weekend, lucky visitors to the Astoria Taproom enjoyed flights of each of the five Love, Lost at Sea vintages from 2018-2022. Bottles stored for 1-5 years will be cracked open and poured into Spey whisky drams to savor and compare how the barleywine has changed and evolved through the years.

“After years of stashing away cases of Love, Lost at Sea, I’m excited to share the development of this beer and this series,” says Jessyka Dart-Mclean, Marketing Manager. “It begins as the same ale every year, then is put into bourbon barrels from varying distilleries. To have a range of years aged in bottles for this tasting event is a unique opportunity for those who haven’t been saving bottles in their personal stash since 2018.”

The label artwork for Love, Lost at Sea was created by Aaron Toledo. Originally from Kansas City, Aaron moved to Oregon in 2002 where he’s been tattooing at Keepsake Tattoo Studio ever since. Aaron is inspired by the ocean, the woods, far reaches of the earth, and “crazy-ass people,” which is probably why he’s tattooed so many around Astoria. Buoy Beer Company will continue to feature tattoo artists on the labels of its Love, Lost at Sea series as it continues.

Love, Lost at Sea 2022 will be available in refillable 500ml bottles distributed in Oregon & Washington.

About Buoy Beer Company

Astoria, OR overlooks the meeting of one of the West’s most relentless rivers and the wilderness of an entire ocean – and it’s here that Buoy Beer Company brews its beer. With balance always a priority, we focus on traditional lagers and NW ales to savor and share with friends after a hard day’s work.
