Genesee Country Village & Museum Announces Partnership with Rohrbach Brewing Company

March 21, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Genesee Country VillageMumford, NY – Genesee Country Village & Museum, located in Mumford, NY, is teaming up with Rohrbach Brewing Company to produce the Museum’s historical beers, which can be found on tap at GCV&M’s multiple restaurants and Freight House Pub, part of an 1849 railroad complex .

Brewing referencing historical recipes

Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Stocking Hill Ale (American Wheat Ale) and Fat Ox Ale (American-Style Brown Ale) connect modern lovers of craft beer to the history of brewing in New York State. Found on tap at various locations around the Museum grounds, both beers are brewed referencing historical recipes from New York State in the 19th century. Rohrbach’s, one of Rochester’s original craft breweries, has locations in downtown Rochester on Railroad Street and on Buffalo Road, and will take over brewing the Museum’s historical recipes and providing beer to the organization for the 2022 season and beyond. On some occasions, the beers may also be found on tap at Rohrbach’s locations.

Stocking Hill Ale is an American Wheat Ale with ginger – it pours a light hazy gold color with wheaty aromas and a bittersweet ginger-y finish. Fat Ox Ale boasts notes of dark chocolate and coffee, the aromas derived from roasted malts. In addition to Stocking Hill Ale and Fat Ox Ale, Museum visitors will also find seasonal Genesee Brewing Company beers on tap, such as the Ruby Red Kolsch in the spring and summer, as well as hard ciders by OSB Ciderworks.

Ties to the craft beer community

Genesee Country Village & Museum has a historical connection with Rochester’s rich brewing scene. Its founder, John L. “Jack” Wehle, also served as Chairman of the family business, the Genesee Brewing Company in Rochester, NY, which his father Louis Wehle purchased in 1932. Today, the Museum’s President & CEO is Becky Wehle, granddaughter of Jack Wehle.

Museum visitors interested in learning more about the history of brewing in the region can visit Grieve’s Brewery on the Museum grounds, a reconstruction of a c. 1803 Geneva, NY brewery. Genesee Country Village & Museum is the only museum in the United States to showcase a working 19th-century brewery. The 1803-themed

brewing demonstrations rely on gravity during much of the process, with liquids either pumped by hand or ladled into troughs throughout the building. Portions of Rochester’s old Enright Brewery (closed in 1907) and an early timber-framed structure near West Bloomfield, NY, were merged to form the present building. Beside the brewery, visitors will find a Hop House (built c. 1870 in Greece, NY), surrounded by a small hop yard. Hops grown at the Museum are harvested in the late summer during the annual Hop Harvest Festival, a celebration of craft beer and the history of brewing in the region.

Where to try the beers

Craft beer lovers looking to sample Stocking Hill Ale and Fat Ox Ale can find the brews on tap this season at Genesee Country Village & Museum in the Freight House Pub, Depot Restaurant, and Pavilion Garden Restaurant. Visitors can bring home filled growlers and find branded craft beer merchandise in the Museum’s Flint Hill Store. For those looking to enjoy Rohrbach’s beers at GCV&M prior to the season’s opening on Saturday, May 7, the Museum’s annual Maple Sugar Festival & Pancake Breakfast (March 19, 20, 26 and 27) will feature Rohrbach’s popular Griddle Cakes, a blueberry maple wheat ale made with real maple syrup, available on tap and in cans.

Several events throughout the year at GCV&M highlight craft beer and the history of brewing – namely, History on Tap (June 3), and the Hop Harvest Festival (September 10). Details for all upcoming events can be found at www.gcv.org.

Anchor Brewing Company Releases West Coast IPA

March 21, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Anchor Brewing CompanySAN FRANCISCO — Following its seminal 125th anniversary year, San Francisco’s pioneering Anchor Brewing Company continues its spirit of innovation in 2022 with the release of its new West Coast IPA. Rolling out this month nationwide, the bold and bright West Coast IPA joins Anchor’s year-round portfolio of beers which include last year’s releases, Tropical Hazy IPA and Crisp Pilsner.

“Our West Coast IPA is a celebration of our Bay Area roots, and Anchor’s long history with dry hopping,” says Assistant Brewmaster Dane Volek, who leads Anchor’s innovation team. “We’ve been experimenting with variations at Public Taps, our taproom in San Francisco, and perfecting our version of this respected style to land on this vibrant and balanced beer.”

Drawing from generations of craft brewing knowledge, West Coast IPA is hand-crafted at Anchor’s iconic brewery in San Francisco, CA using top quality ingredients and time-honored dry-hopping techniques perfected over the past fifty years. Anchor was the first craft brewery in modern times to revive the century-old method with its 1975 release of Liberty Ale®. The first modern American IPA brewed post-Prohibition and the first modern American beer to use single-hop and dry-hopped techniques, Liberty Ale is credited as the beer that started the IPA revolution.

With its nationwide debut this spring, West Coast IPA celebrates the evolution of Anchor’s dry-hopping processes, as well as the brand’s trailblazing history that continues to inspire beer trends and styles today. The 7.0% ABV IPA is brewed with a combination of Nugget, Citra, Sultana, and Cascade hops, imparting aromas of mandarin and grapefruit zest, along with fresh pine. The result is a refreshing ale bursting with bold citrus flavors, robust hops, and a smooth mouthfeel ideal for enjoying with friends during weekend adventures or a sun-filled day at the beach.

West Coast IPA is now available in cans at top retailers with a suggested retail price of $9.99 per six-pack, on-draft at Anchor’s Public Taps taproom, and on premise at bars and restaurants. It joins Anchor’s portfolio of beers which include Anchor Steam®, California Lager, Liberty Ale, Anchor Porter, Tropical Hazy IPA, and Crisp Pilsner.

About Anchor Brewing Company

Established in San Francisco in 1896, Anchor Brewing Company is America’s first craft brewery, a trailblazer and industry leader that has persevered through earthquakes, fires and Prohibition. In 1965, Anchor’s new owner Fritz Maytag revived the brewery for a new era, charting a course that was foundational in the craft beer movement. During this time, Anchor reinvented its now classic Steam Beer, introduced the first American Pale Ale and pioneered new brewing practices—such as dry-hopping—that are still used industry-wide today. As a proudly unionized brewery, Anchor’s dynamic portfolio of beers includes complex ales, refreshing IPAs, and iconic classics such as Anchor Steam®, Liberty Ale, Anchor Porter, California Lager, and Christmas Ale. As always, Anchor Brewing remains committed to innovation while hand-crafting venerable beers that stand the test of time. Locals and Bay Area visitors can experience Anchor Brewing in-person at their iconic brewery and Public Taps taproom in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. Dokkaebier Releases New Asian-Inspired Craft Beers: Rice Kolsch and Dalgona Amber

March 21, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

DokkaebierOAKLAND, Calif.– Dokkaebier, the leading craft brewery inspired by Asian-influenced ingredients, today revealed its latest experimental limited-batch brews: Rice Kolsch and Dalgona Amber. Rice Kolsch and Dalgona Amber are the 26th and 27th original craft beers created by Dokkaebier in less than two years.

“With our newest experimental brews, we wanted to take a playful approach to a main staple of Asian cuisine and a Korean street food favorite. Rice Kolsch and Dalgona Amber are one-of-a-kind beers that should be unforgettable culinary adventures for craft beer fans,” said Dokkaebier Founder and CEO Youngwon Lee. “We believe craft beer is an opportunity to be innovative and an area where we can bring more diversity, inclusion and belonging in representation and taste.”

Dokkaebier’s Rice Kolsch is a malty, traditional Kolsch with a slightly sweet flavor and a bright citrus character. Rice adds a nutty and light toasted taste, which becomes very prominent in the back and creates a soft mouthfeel for a pleasant, balanced experience. The rice flavors shine through from start to finish, making Rice Kolsch an easy-to-drink beer.

Dalgona Amber is a dry amber ale rich with the aromas of burnt caramel, sweet caramel and toasted bread. The Korean sugar candy dalgona is subtly sweet to the taste but spot-on to the nose when poured into a glass. The beer has a medium-high body, a dry finish, and a mature, slightly spicy aftertaste.

Under the leadership of head brewer Aaron Weshnak, a veteran of some of California’s most prestigious breweries, including the Russian River Brewing Company of Pliny the Elder fame, Dokkaebier regularly creates new craft beers with unique, exotic and delicious Asian-inspired ingredients. The experimental creations are made in small artisanal batches and are available only for a limited time. Once popular, Dokkaebier refines the recipe and adds the experimental beer to its core lineup for year-round availability.

Dokkaebier’s most popular craft beers include Kimchi Sour, the 2021 Annual Brewski™ Awards Gold Medal-winning kettle sour made with authentic kimchi culture; Milk Stout, picked as the Best Sweet Stout and awarded a Silver Medal at the 2022 World Beer Championships; and Minari Witbier, which sold out in weeks after the film “Minari” won a Golden Globe award.

Dokkaebier is available at more than 160 locations in California, including major national retailers BevMo!, Craft Beer Kings and Total Wine & More, and local markets and restaurants.

Award-Winning Artist-Author Andi Scurto and Her Creation, the Irresistible Mattie the Giraffe, Now Have Their Own Beer

March 20, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

MattieDESTIN, Florida – Destin author and illustrator Andi Scurto, author of “The Accidental Adventure of Mattie the Giraffe,” now has a beer named after her creation: Destin Brewery’s Mattie Light, a light lager.

Not only that, but 15% of all sales of the beer will go to the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF), a Destin-based nonprofit arts organization that partners with schools and other community organizations to provide visual and performing arts programs that otherwise would not be available.

And, to celebrate the new beer, a launch party will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the brewery, 505 Mountain Drive, Unit N, in Destin. The party will feature free appetizers, Mattie the Giraffe merchandise and fun giveaways. Of course, Mattie Light will be available for purchase, with 15% of proceeds going to MKAF.

“Since I created Mattie in 2015, it’s truly been an awesome, accidental adventure. So many chance things have happened to us,” says author Scurto. “And now she has pedaled herself onto yet another remarkable location — the label of a Destin Brewery light beer. I wondered how to promote this idea of Mattie — a children’s character — being on an adult beverage label. The fact that a portion of each sale benefits philanthropic art programs for kids all sponsored by Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, completely eases my mind. And a cool sip of Destin’s Brewery’s newest light beer is sure to ease the nerves of any adult these days.”

In addition to the brewery, Mattie Light will be sold at Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation events as well as local stores.

“We at Destin Brewery are super excited about our collaboration with Andi Art and Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation,” says Kristina Laszewski of Destin Brewery. “Being a family-owned business and having an artist and musician in our family we know how important it is to support the arts in our community. We feel privileged to pair up with the talented Andi and an amazing organization like Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation that enlightens our community with incredible talent. Cheers to a collaboration of crafts; beer, art, theater, and music!”

MKAF, which was founded in in 1995 on the cultural, educational and spiritual beliefs of Destin matriarch Mattie May Kelly (1912-1992), offers an array of teaching artist residencies, workshops, touring performances, and summer camps designed to address the unique needs of K-12 students, children and adults with special needs, and veteran and active duty military service members. All outreach art initiatives are made possible by private and corporate gifts, MKAF event income, and grants.

“I love working for the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation because our strong commitment to bringing the arts to people of all abilities and backgrounds in our community,” says Melanie Moore, Education Director of the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation. “We do this through our innovative ArtsReach programs for K-12 schools, children and adults with special needs, and veterans with visible and invisible injuries. We now implement more than 100 outreach programs a year!”

“The Accidental Adventure of Mattie the Giraffe” is a colorfully illustrated tale of the day that Mattie learns to ride her bicycle. It’s the captivating story about Mattie’s unexpected adventure that makes the perfect winter read for children.

“The memories I have of being read Dr. Seuss and The Berenstain Bears are priceless to me. A good book can be the bridge that bonds us together and that is my wish for Mattie the Giraffe- to be a bit of glue that helps happy memories stick,” says Scurto, who had been working on the book for the past six years.

Written and illustrated by Scurto, Mattie the Giraffe is a beloved character that has developed a whimsical following over the last six years. Scurto’s illustrations not only inspire wonder and curiosity, but leave fans asking, “where will Mattie be next?”

Audience participation has been an engaging experience for Scurto, as her fans contribute imaginative travel spots for her protagonist — Mattie. Scurto felt that Mattie’s story of learning to ride a bike, without knowing how she would stop, could inspire courage in her audiences. A surprise ending, combined with over a dozen original watercolor paintings comprise this lighthearted journey of a reticulated giraffe.

Now you can bring Mattie the Giraffe into your home, and if you order “The Accidental Adventure of Mattie the Giraffe” straight from Scurto’s website, your copy will come signed by the author. There is limited stock, and once it runs out you can find copies on Amazon.

Hailing from Destin, Florida by way of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Scurto is of Colombian descent and finds the warm Florida weather much to her liking.

Scurto is a self-taught artist whose art is featured in four different galleries and multiple outdoor areas in the Destin area. For nearly 15 years Scurto has been a professional artist, and she’s spent over 20 years writing creative content for the vacation rental industry. Finally, she’s combined her passions for storytelling and love of illustrating.

Six years in the making, Mattie the Giraffe began as a shy illustration that went on to be the subject of the 20th anniversary poster for Destin Festival of the Arts and then continued to win multiple awards, culminating in the book. Scurto’s favorite pastimes include bird-watching, attempting to complete the NY Times daily crossword and of course, riding her bike. This is her first book.

Neshaminy Creek Brews GIANT IPA

March 20, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Neshaminy CreekCROYDON, Pennsylvania – Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company (Neshaminy Creek) announces its collaboration with GIANT Food Stores to release One GIANT Coast, a Double Dry-Hopped Imperial India Pale Ale with Apollo, Chinook, Citra, Idaho 7, and HBC630.  One GIANT Coast is a collision of ideas combining everything loved about West Coast Imperial IPAs – big, resinous, and crisp with bright citrus fruit character – with the favorite attributes of East Coast Hazy IPAs – juicy, tropical notes, and soft-as-clouds mouthfeel. Sold in 16 oz four-packs for $10.99. The IPA embodies the best of both worlds with hints of strawberry, banana, and grapefruit and an ABV of 8.5%. It’s a big idea for a big beer.

The One GIANT Coast can artwork features a beach scene with a beautiful sunset representing the tropical notes of the IPA while also boasting sunglasses and a forest to bring the East Coast meets West Coast idea to life. One GIANT Coast will be available March 18 at all GIANT Foods Stores in Pennsylvania that sell alcohol and on draft at Neshaminy Creek’s taprooms in Croydon, New Hope and Dublin for $8.

One GIANT Coast is a bold beer that pairs well with even bolder flavors. Neshaminy Creek recommends pairing it with spicy meats and cheeses like pepper jack or habanero cheddar as well as hot capicola and Calabrese salami. The heat balances with the bright, juicy citrus of the beer for the perfect combination.

“I was really excited about the opportunity to create a new IPA with the folks at Giant, showcasing our best hops.  We wanted to make a double IPA, around 8.5%, which I believe is the best canvas for showing off hops,” explains head brewer Jason Ranck. “I love hop flavor and my leanings are West Coast….clean, crisp, resinous.  I was really excited to finally use HBC630, an experimental hop variety from Yakima Chief that has loads of sweet fruit character with notes of Strawberry, Banana, and Cotton Candy.  When I was out for hop selection in Yakima last fall, I had the absolute pleasure of smelling Idaho 7 in the field and thought this would be the perfect combo…. Idaho 7’s juicy stone fruit and sticky, resinous pine notes with the sweet fruitiness of HBC630.  What a pleasure to be able to combine the best of both worlds.”

After two long years, Anni Party is finally back and scheduled for April 30th in downtown Bellaire, Michigan.

The first anniversary party (2005!) was a milestone for the brewery—a true celebration of tenacity and survival and truly necessary to keep the lights on at the Pub. There will be a very limited number of tickets available in order to accommodate folks who have been holding onto their tickets since early 2020. And if that doesn’t tell you just how awesome this party is, you’ll just have to see for yourself.

Details: – Saturday April 30, 2022 – 4-9pm with early entry (pre-party) options available – 40+ beers and ciders + bands, food, and fun – $45 general admission, $70 for pre-party – Proceeds from the party go towards community development and beautification in Northern Michigan

Tröegs Announces Return of LolliHop

March 19, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

TroegsHERSHEY, Pennsylvania – Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of LolliHop, a soft, citrusy and slightly hazy Double IPA with notes of pear, citrus and a hint of melon.

The inspiration for LolliHop begins in the hop fields of Yakima Valley, Washington, during the brewery’s annual pilgrimage to this hop-growing hotbed.

Like many of its limited releases, LolliHop worked its way through the brewery’s small-batch Scratch Series, starting with an IPA hopped with Citra and Mosaic. The addition of Azacca provided the finishing touch on the hop combination for LolliHop.

“There’s only a handful of beers that have an ‘a-ha’ origin, and LolliHop is one of them,” says John Trogner, Tröegs brewmaster and co-founding brother. “Hop selection is key in finding the right Citra hops, and we build upon that with Azacca’s bright pear and melon notes.”

For the backbone, LolliHop utilizes Pennsylvania-grown rustic pale malt and a portion of wheat and oats to lend a silky, smooth texture with a touch of haze.

The whimsical label art was created by Baltimore, MD-based artist and Art of Tröegs alum Devin Watson. The annual Art of Tröegs contest seeks original artwork inspired by Tröegs beer. The 2022 contest is currently under way and runs through May 1.

LolliHop is available on draft and in 16-oz. cans everywhere Tröegs beer is sold.

Threes Brewing Releases Tyranny of Mirrors

March 19, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Threes BrewingBROOKLYN, New York – Threes Brewing releases Tyranny of Mirrors West Coast Pale Ale, paying homage to the less hazy West Coast style. This beer exemplifies a New World meets Old World twist, thanks to its hop bill of Simcoe, Centennial, and Riwaka. Utilizing varietals representative of different generations of beer, expect tropical fruit aromatics with dry floral notes.

Lead Brewer, Ben Petersen, says, “Tyranny of Mirrors is meant to be drier, crisper, and have a more assertive bitterness than its East Coast counterparts. We’re very excited to continue expanding our Pale Ale portfolio.”
