Riverbend Malt House Launches Seasonal Malt Program With Double Kilned Munich

December 17, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Riverbend Malt HouseASHEVILLE, North Carolina – Riverbend Malt House debuted Double Kilned Munich last week as part of a new seasonal malt program to serve the varying needs of craft brewers and distillers in the Southeast region. This small-batch malt is available only while supplies last.

As its name suggests, Double Kilned Munich makes two trips through the kiln, a process that helps develop the complex flavors and increases color to approximately 50 SRM. “This was a fun and challenging project for our production team,” says Brent Manning, Riverbend’s Co-Founder who leads  product development. “We experimented with a variety of different base malts, hydration regimes, and kilning recipes to arrive at this really special malt.”

Double Kilned Munich is malted from 2-row barley grown on family owned farms in the Southeast. This malt will contribute a beautiful, ruby red hue and notes of dark fruit and toffee with a touch of fresh roasted coffee to beers styles such as Czech Dark Lager, Baltic Porter, and winter seasonals.

“Double Kilned Munich performed well, tasted great, and served as a direct substitute for crystal or caramel malt,” says Chris Cates, Founder and Owner at Little Animals Brewery in Johnson City, Tennessee. “Its flavor impact leaned more towards rich malt flavor than it did towards sweetness. This is where it really shined, and what I would say made it stand out: minimal contribution to sweetness. Normally we have to source ‘specialty grain’ elsewhere, and then the beer can’t be advertised as ‘all local malt.’ Overall I really enjoyed the malt and will use it again.”

ABOUT RIVERBEND MALT HOUSE

Riverbend Malt House is on a quest to connect Southeastern family owned farms and fermenters. Co-Founders Brent Manning and Brian Simpson launched Riverbend, the first craft malt house east of the Mississippi River, in Asheville, North Carolina in 2010. Buoyed by a 70,000 square foot production facility and state of the art equipment, Riverbend Malt House helps breweries and distilleries large, small, and in-between stand out with flavor, locality, and community in an increasingly competitive landscape— all the while challenging the status quo of corporate, big-agriculture malt.

Reuben’s Brews Begins Serving Beer-Friendly Fare in Taproom

December 16, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Reuben's BrewsSEATTLE — When Reuben’s Brews launched a decade ago, the brewery’s sole focus was crafting beers from the glass backwards. Occupying a small warehouse space in Ballard, the beer was more than enough to keep the tiny team—Adam Robbings and his brother-in-law Mike Pfeiffer—out of trouble. Fast forward to the present, and the brewery now offers 25 rotating taps including its own cider and hard seltzer at its Taproom on 14th Avenue NW. Enjoyably expanding people’s love of beer since 2012, founders Adam and Grace Robbings are proud to announce the next step in the evolution of their brewery: food.

“We decided to open a brewery because we enjoyed creating and sharing our beers, and we loved pouring delight and bringing community together,” says Adam. “Reuben’s Eats is an opportunity to create new memories and deepen relationships, and it’s a chance to strengthen community, now both around the table and at the bar. We’re excited that you can now rely on us to be there to pair our award-winning brews with great food, every day.”

For the past few weeks, visitors to the Ballard tasting room will have noticed a conspicuous addition to the patio: a 16-foot food truck emblazoned with a colorful Reuben’s Eats sign. Inside this kitchen on wheels, the new food team has been working tirelessly to get everything running smoothly, and on Friday, December 9th, it opens to the public with a full menu of mains and sides designed to pair with beers. Some of them even use beer as an ingredient.

Reuben’s Eats is open for dinner service (4 – 8 p.m.) Monday thru Friday, and both lunch and dinner (11 a.m. – 8 p.m.) on Saturdays and Sundays. Beginning in the spring, Robbings says that the food truck will serve lunch and dinner seven days a week and will occasionally feature specials in addition to staple offerings like a bratwurst made with Reuben’s Pilsner, a perfectly crispy fried chicken sandwich, a soft pretzel served with mustard and beer cheese, and doughnut holes accompanied by huckleberry compote and whipped crème fraîche.

Leading this new dining concept are Kirsten Ohlendorf, a Seattle native and former food truck owner with a food and beverage background that spans various roles, and Mark Abrahamsen, a 13-year veteran of Seattle’s restaurant scene. The two met while working at the acclaimed Wallingford restaurant Tilth, and their careers have crossed paths a few other times since.

“I’m an advocate for the Slow Food movement and for general mindfulness as it pertains to our interactions with food, from the field to the table,” says Abrahamsen, who sources most of the Reuben’s Eats ingredients from local growers, producers, and purveyors like Bavarian Meats, Firefly Kimchi, and Sea Wolf Bakery.

“We’ve approached recipe development for our food the same way we’ve always approached our beers: unbound by constraints, with an unwavering focus on quality. And while our menu will evolve over time and periodically include specials, we’re especially excited to be a dependable option for great food, every day.”

About Reuben’s Brews

Adam and Grace Robbings opened Reuben’s Brews in 2012, after an award-winning homebrewing career, naming it after their first child, Reuben. At their family brewery they brew from the glass backwards: designing each beer with intention, unbound by constraints. They know that making that extra effort is worth it. From everyday favorites to innovative new releases, they want to share a love of discovery. Reuben’s Brews. Beer Unbound.

Living The Dream Releases ROCKER Spirits Port Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout

December 12, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Living The Dream Brewing CompanyLITTLETON, Colorado –  Living The Dream Brewing is proud to present Port Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, aged in ROCKER Spirits Whiskey barrels and finished in Port wine barrels.

Living The Dream has been experimenting with barrel projects for years now, and the brewing team is especially excited to work with such a local collaborator. ROCKER Spirits opened in Littleton in 2016, and has since been crafting whiskey, rum, and vodka. Their whiskey boasts sweet cereal aromas and notes of caramel, butterscotch, and honey, with a light citrus and moderate oak finish. This corn and wheat-based whiskey ages for a minimum of 3 years in 53-gallon virgin American oak barrels before finishing in Port wine barrels.

Enter Living The Dream Imperial Stout. This beer is brewed with a Root Shoot Genie Pale base with layered specialty malts to create its dark color and roasty complexity. Living The Dream’s brewing team filled freshly emptied ROCKER Spirits whiskey barrels with this full-bodied Stout, which took quickly to the oak, vanilla, and bourbon, and dark red fruit flavors of the original spirit.

The final product is a big-bodied 10% ABV Imperial Stout with aromas of caramel, toasted almonds and hints of red fruit. Its big chocolate and roasted flavors are complemented by red cherry, blackberry, and oak overtones.

“It’s always great to collaborate locally and help support the other small producers here in Colorado,” says Living The Dream Founder Jason Bell. “This is our first venture with a distillery, and ROCKER has really shown to make some fantastic spirits. We couldn’t be more excited to work with them on this project.”

Find Port Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout on draft and in cans at Living The Dream, and in limited quantities across the state via Colorado Craft Distributors, all while supplies last.

December 12, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Libra Beverage CompanyCHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Libra Beverage Co., a B-Corp Certified non-alcoholic beverage company on a mission to help people find their balance, is kicking off the New Year by bringing its award-winning non-alcoholic Libra IPA to Costco in Atlantic Canada and Ottawa, making the sober curious and moderation lifestyle more accessible.

January is often the time that consumers reset their relationship with alcohol. Last year 1 in 5 adults participated in Dry January; however, 47% of those participants chose not to abstain completely but focussed on moderating their consumption*. A recent Nielsen report shows that sales of non-alcoholic beverages reached $395 million in the last 52 weeks. However, 82% of non-alcoholic buyers are still purchasing alcohol***, indicating that today’s consumer values balance vs. ultimatums when it comes to their drinking choices.

“Whether you are sober curious or choose to moderate, great tasting non-alcoholic beverages are becoming staples in Canadian fridges,” says Mitch Cobb, Co-Founder of Libra Beverage Co. “At Libra, we want to create a movement where people can socialize without sacrifice everywhere they go. Our Costco launch is one way we are making moderation easier for consumers.”

Libra’s IPA looks, tastes, and feels like the real thing but with only 50 calories. Using traditional brewing methods, dry-hopped El Dorado, Idaho 7, Strata and Comet come together to create a balanced IPA bursting with tropical fruit and mango aroma and flavours. Twelve packs of Libra’s award-winning IPA will be available for $19.99 in January.

The New York International Beer Competition recently recognized Libra’s IPA refreshing taste as a Silver Winner, and Libra was named Canadian Non-Alcoholic Brewery of the Year 2022. As part of their partnership with Serena Ryder, 1% of Libra sales support ArtHaus Serena’s music incubator making wellness and professional development programs accessible to emerging artists across Canada.

Gorilla’s Gold-winning Gose Gets Gangseo-gu Tomato Twist

December 11, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Gorilla Brewing CompanyBUSAN, South Korea – After Gorilla Brewing Company’s ‘Imperial Gose’ took the 2022 Asia Beer Championship gold, they decided to bring more acclaim to Korea as a high-quality craft brewing hub by creating another Gose. Reminiscing on its roots, the CEO and head brewer, Paul Edwards, considered adding popular regional ingredients. One of the first that came to mind was tomatoes, due to their complementary sweet flavor, to Goses’ tartiness that comes from the top-fermenting yeast and lactobacillus bacteria.

The Daejeo region, within Gangseo-gu (district) of Busan, is known for cultivating tomatoes with a unique chewy texture and salty flavor that are loaded with vitamin C.  Aptly named the  “Daejeo Tomatoes” are so popular that a namesake festival is held annually to enjoy and celebrate the local delicacy.  The newly released ‘Imperial Gose Tomato’ is perfectly balanced and infused with heaps of these Busan-grown tomatoes.

Juhyeon, Gorilla’s design specialist and Busan native, describes the beer as “sweet, salty, and sour, three tastes unite in a single sip.” The Gose, brewed with pale, wheat,  and carapils malts; Columbus hops, and heaps of Daejeo tomatoes, is described as “a perfectly balanced Gose, infused with local tomatoes to create a one-of-a-kind beer.” Gorilla’s Gwangan staff recommend enjoying a glass if “you want a pizza, but aren’t hungry,” Gorilla’s brewers suggest pairing it with a “breakfast burrito.”

This seasonal beer is available in 500ml cans or on tap at Gorilla Brewing locations.  Cases of 12 cans and 20-liter kegs are available via their sales team.

Together, they will bring beer lovers, foodies, families and everyone in between a unique experience, right in the heart of Union, Kentucky.
