Anderson Valley Brewing Company Announces Complete Transition to Aluminum Cans

December 11, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Anderson Valley Brewing CompanyBOONVILLE, California – Anderson Valley Brewing Company (AVBC) announced it has officially phased out all glass bottle packaging for aluminum cans with cardboard wraps – transitioning AVBC’s beers into the most sustainable beer packaging possible.

Why cans? Aluminum is endlessly recyclable, and even better, recycling a can uses 90% less energy than glass bottles. And because cans are lighter and ship more efficiently AVBC has been able to reduce its trucking by almost 60% by switching from glass. Aluminum cans also keep beer fresher by allowing a more airtight seal and blocking all UV light.

“Our last run of Boont Amber in glass bottles was a bit bittersweet because of how historic that beer is, but we have now officially transitioned entirely to aluminum cans with cardboard wrap packaging,” said President and CEO Kevin McGee. “We also found that with our new cardboard wraps we use 52% less total cardboard than our old glass package format and we can reduce our overall material costs by up to 30% while doing better for the planet. This is the most environmentally responsible beer package available – a milestone that has allowed us to dramatically reduce both supply chain and packaging costs all while dramatically reducing our carbon footprint.”

About Anderson Valley Brewing Company

For over 34 years, Anderson Valley Brewing Company has sustainably hand-crafted authentic ales and lagers with balance and complexity. Founded in 1987 in the lower level of Boonville CA’s Buckhorn Saloon, Anderson Valley Brewing Company has grown to be widely recognized as one of the true pioneers in craft brewing. Asahi Super Dry 0.0% Hits International Markets

December 10, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

AsahiAsahi Europe & International has announced the launch of its alcohol-free beer, Asahi Super Dry 0.0%, in the UK, Ireland, Australia, France, Sweden, USA, Canada. Asahi Super Dry 0.0% offers consumers an alcohol-free version of the super-premium brand, Asahi Super Dry. Consumers can expect the exact same signature crisp, refreshing, super dry taste that has led Asahi Dry to be the number one selling beer in Japan.

In 1987, Asahi Super Dry launched introducing the world to a new “super dry” taste redefining the category. Now, this revolution is happening again as Asahi introduces the same super-dry taste to the world, but now alcohol-free. Asahi’s Master Brewers have combined pioneering Japanese brewing techniques with the finest barley, maize, hops, and yeast available. The base recipe of Asahi Super Dry is taken through a process of de-alcoholisation to create the finished beer at 0.0% ABV, delivering a super-premium alcohol-free beer that matches the promise of the original to go Beyond Expected. This promise brought about the creation of the world’s first super-dry alcohol-free beer, inspiring beer drinkers to step outside their norm and discover a true taste of modern Japan by blending tradition and innovation.

The launch is yet another step towards Asahi Europe & International’s Legacy 2030 ambition that 20% of their portfolio will comprise of alcohol-free products by the end of the decade, offering consumers more choice that suits different consumption patterns alongside prioritising more sustainable production, packaging methods and alcohol-free options. Supporting this, Asahi conducted independent research which revealed consumers are looking for premium alcohol-free alternatives that do not compromise on taste. Wellbeing and health also played a key factor in people’s decision to reach for alcohol-free alternatives with 62% citing it made them feel healthier generally and over a third of respondents listed working to a longer-term fitness goal as their driver.

Asahi Super Dry 0.0% will initially be available to buy across the UK and Ireland from January 2023, Australia, France, Sweden, USA and Canada from March 2023, and New Zealand from April 2023.Following the exclusive launch listing, the premium alcohol-free brand will then be rolled out across multiple on and off trade locations.

The unveiling of Asahi Super Dry 0.0% is part of an international roll out across eight markets over the next 12 months. The beer will be available in bars and restaurants globally, and sold individually and in multipacks of x6, x24 330ml bottles, and x4, x6, x24 330ml cans and will be distinguishable in-store from its master brand, Asahi Super Dry, by its prominent silver and blue branding.

A global marketing campaign to support the launch is set to roll out across digital and social channels to coincide with the launch date, as Asahi continues to build a global super-premium brand building on influences of modern Japan. The campaign will focus on a 15-second digital film, out-of-home and visibility in on and off premise venues.

Richard Ingram, Asahi Europe & International Global Brands Director, said: “This latest product development has been driven by our customers who are keen to moderate their alcohol intake as they pursue a more balanced lifestyle, without sacrificing the premium taste of their favourite beer.

“Asahi Super Dry 0.0% will be instantly recognisable as it is crafted with the exact same base recipe and ingredients to match the flavour profile of its signature beer. Only after the characteristic aroma and taste of Asahi Super Dry has been fully developed, is the alcohol gently removed to deliver the crisp, refreshing super dry taste.

“Asahi Super Dry has become widely recognised across markets for its unique crisp, refreshing super dry taste and flavour. As demand for alcohol-free alternatives grows, we’re seeing more people seek out beer alternatives that don’t compromise on taste or quality. Through extensive research and trials, Asahi Super Dry 0.0% has created an elevated option that stands above mainstream brands.”

Alongside this launch Asahi Super Dry is increasing its global appeal through its recently announced global partnership in August with City Football Group, including Premier League Champions Manchester City. It is also the official beer of Rugby World Cup 2023 where Asahi Super Dry and Asahi Super Dry 0.0% will be served at all tournament venues across France, spanning 48 matches in 9 cities. Both of these global sporting partnerships play a key role in the ambition of Asahi Europe & International to expand the sales of their Global Premium Brand Asahi Super Dry including the new 0.0% variant while elevating the fan experience, live in stadiums or at home.

Three Veteran-Owned Breweries Collab for Operation Hat Trick

December 9, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

The Bold Mariner Brewing CompanyNORFOLK, VA; SAN DIEGO, CA; SALEM, MA; HAMPTON, NH – Three Veteran-owned breweries from across the country have partnered up to raise awareness and support a cause close to their hearts: Operation Hat Trick.

“This collaboration is very personal for me, Nate Hardy, and Mike Koch were two of my close friends. OHT honors both Nate and Mike through their charitable work. Everyone wants to do something to help our Veterans as they struggle with both visible and invisible wounds of war. Operation Hat Trick makes this support as easy as purchasing a hat that also supports your favorite College team. I wanted to do something to help OHT’s mission and Honor Nate and Mike. After one of our traditional holiday correspondences, with Dot and the Hardy family, I decided to try to organize a Craft Beer collaboration that would both raise money but also awareness of OHT. I also thought it only fitting that the Collaboration had to be between NAVY SEAL Owned Craft Breweries, and I thought that making it a Hat Trick Collaboration of three breweries was even better. So the next thing I did was to reach out to Scott and Sean,Between the Three of our breweries, I felt that we would be able to expand the visibility of OHT from Norfolk, VA to San Diego, CA, and Back to Salem MA.” – Michael Stacks, Owner of The Bold Mariner Brewing Co.

The Bold Mariner Brewing Co. (Norfolk, VA), Protector Brewery (San Diego, CA), and East Regiment Beer Company (Salem, MA) will each brew “Brewing Memories, Crafting Support” in support of Operation Hat Trick. All three breweries agreed to brew the same recipe on or around the same day and then release the beer in their respective tasting rooms. The Breweries will then donate a portion of the sales to OHT.

The OHT mission is to generate awareness and support for the recovery of wounded service members and veterans through the sale of OHT-branded merchandise and products, proceeds of which are donated to selected organizations that fulfill the OHT mission. OHT is dedicated to American service members as they recover from the visible and invisible wounds of war. We help them move past the traumas of battle so they can focus on their lives and families at home.

“OHT is dedicated to American service members as they recover from the visible and invisible wounds of war,” says Dot Sheehan, Founder, and CEO of OHT. “We help them move past the traumas of battle so they can focus on their lives and families at home. Dedicated to Navy SEALS Nate Hardy and Mike Koch, OHT fills some critical gaps in care that other organizations don’t provide for. We are honored to partner with these 3 breweries-together we are making a difference.”

East Regiment is a nano Brewery located in Salem, MA founded by Scott Perry ( Navy Vet.) and Joshua Engdahl (Merchant Marine). The two hand-built their brew equipment and hand craft ales and lagers in the oldest firehouse in Salem, MA. Perry, a former SEAL worked with Mike Stacks of Bold Mariner in a training cell before leaving the Navy to start East Regiment. During that time Perry learned a good bit of the commercial brewing side from volunteering at Bold Mariner.

“It’s an Honor to take part in this collab with Bold Mariner and Protector. I did not know Nateor Mike personally however their legacy was widespread throughout the teams. We hear and share stories of our teammates who have gone before us upholding our ethos and reputation so it’s a big deal for me to contribute to this collab with OHT, which is dedicated to these two fellow SEALS. It’s also icing on the cake to help contribute to the causes that OHT supports, helping out our fellow brothers and sisters in need.” – Scott Perry Co-Owner of East Regiment Beer Co.

Customers looking to purchase the collaboration beer, “Brewing Memories, Crafting Support”, are encouraged to visit the participating brewery in their area.

The Denver Post Guild and FlyteCo Brewing Collaborate on The Thirst Amendment

December 8, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

FlytecoDENVER — The Denver Post’s newsroom guild and FlyteCo Brewing are pleased to announce a collaboration beer and to invite locals to show their support for local journalism at a release party on December 8 at the brewery (4499 W 38th Ave #101 Denver, CO 80212). Newshounds and boozehounds can join newspaper personnel to raise a pint of The Thirst Amendment, a black IPA, a week prior to the guild’s next bargaining session on December 14. Enjoy happy hour pricing on pours of the specialty release starting at 5 p.m., plus the opportunity to chat with The Denver Post’s journalists about their work.

The Thirst Amendment collaboration seeks to raise awareness about the vital role local journalists play in their communities and rally support for the reporters, photographers and other staff at The Denver Post as they advocate for fair wages. In May, representatives of both the newsroom and non-newsroom guild units started negotiating the terms of a new employment contract with corporate management, emphasizing the need for higher compensation. They have yet to reach an agreement on the issue of wages.Since 2016, the last time the newsroom received across-the-board raises, the median price of a single-family home in Denver has risen 71 percent to $650,000, while the average rent for an apartment has increased 37 percent to $1,860. Add in inflation, rising health care costs and the lack of matching 401K contributions, and The Denver Post’s journalists are falling even farther behind.

“In the eight years I’ve been at The Denver Post, our staff has covered wildfires across Colorado, gone to active crime scenes near our homes, inhaled tear gas, entered COVID wards and so much more. My colleagues’ dedication to covering this city and state has never waivered and it’s well past time for those efforts to be rewarded with raises that allow us to keep up with the cost of living here,” Joe Rubino, Denver Post reporter and chair of the newsroom bargaining unit, said. “We hope the community will come out and support us as we ask for a fair contract. And enjoy some great beer too.”

“Journalists play an invaluable role in our communities, and we wanted to collaborate with this bargaining collective to give them an even bigger platform in getting their message out,” said Morgan O’Sullivan, co-owner of FlyteCo Brewing. “This campaign goes beyond politics – these writers and photographers deserve to be fairly compensated in order to continue to tell the stories of Denver and beyond.”

Those looking to show their support of The Denver Post guild can also send an email to the newspaper’s management staff via the Action Network. If able, please consider subscribing to The Denver Post, as it shows the community values local journalists’ work.

More about the Denver Newspaper Guild

The Denver Newspaper Guild Local 37074 is a union of Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska newspaper employees, and employees working for unions and nonprofit organizations in the state. For more than 70 years the Guild has worked for equitable wages and benefits, fair working conditions, and a voice on the job for all. The Denver Post’s newsroom and non-newsroom units represent reporters, photographers, digital strategists, columnists, paper handlers, machinists, and advertising and circulation personnel, among other positions. The Denver Newspaper Guild also includes The Pueblo Chieftain, The Casper Star-Tribune, The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions, United for a New Economy (UNE), Denver Area Labor Federation (DALF), and Colorado Jobs with Justice (COJWJ).

More about FlyteCo Brewing

Denver-based FlyteCo Brewing opened its doors in March 2019 in the Berkeley neighborhood with just five beers on tap. The aviation-themed brewery is the brainchild of Morgan O’Sullivan, Eric Serani and head brewer Jason Slingsby – all who initially bonded over an equal love of homebrewing and aviation. Since then, the brewery has added a coffee shop and bagel eatery, 15 more taps and a number of awards, including a recent gold medal for the FlyteCo Late A-Rye-Val IPA at the 2022 Brewski Awards. In August 2022, the brewery opened a second location at the recently revitalized former Stapleton International Airport Control Tower.

Calwise Spirits and Firestone Walker Unveil Old Tom Big Sur Gin

December 8, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Calwise SpiritsPaso Robles, CA: Calwise Spirits and Firestone Walker Brewing Company today unveiled “Old Tom Big Sur Gin”—a brewery-inspired riff on the distillery’s signature Big Sur Gin.

“This was an opportunity to elevate the Big Sur Gin experience with ingredients and input from an iconic California brewery,” said Calwise Master Distiller Aaron Bergh. “Old Tom Big Sur Gin reflects a meeting of the minds, with grapes, grains and botanicals coming together to create a gin like no other.”

Located just a mile from the Calwise Spirits distillery in Paso Robles, Firestone Walker proved to be a fitting partner when Bergh came knocking. “Aaron is our neighbor and we’ve always admired his creations, so it was a natural collaboration,” said Firestone Walker’s Chief Operating Officer Nick Firestone. “We’ve been working with spirits barrels for nearly 20 years to create our barrel-aged strong ales, and we see this as an extension of that tradition.”

In addition to the main Old Tom Big Sur Gin, Calwise also released a separate “Rested in Oak” edition, which was matured for three months in American oak barrels inherited from Firestone Walker’s Double Barrel fermentation program. The moniker “Old Tom” is a nod to the original 18th century British gins known by that name, and to the English heritage of brewery co-founder David Walker.

Flavors of California

To help create “Old Tom” Big Sur Gin, Firestone Walker generated a mash of traditional brewing grains with a complement of wine grape juice, all fermented with native yeast and bacteria. This base was then distilled by Calwise, imparting a unique imprint into the flavor profile of the original Big Sur Gin.

Then, in the established Big Sur Gin fashion, Bergh infused the gin with organic wild herbs that are largely native to California’s iconic Big Sur coastline, including white sage, yerba santa, bay, fennel and elderberry as well as the essential juniper.

“We also enhanced the traditional recipe by including botanicals such as coriander and orange peel, which were suggested by Brewmaster Matt Brynildson,” Bergh said. “We added rose petal as an ode to David Walker’s British roots.”

Bergh worked with Brynildson, Sensory Research Analyst Craig Thomas and the Firestone Walker brewing team to create the mash, acquire the right barrels and guide both versions of Old Tom Big Sur Gin to fruition.

The resulting gins provide both common and contrasting qualities. The main version of “Old Tom” Big Sur gin is fragrant and elegant, while the version matured in DBA barrels has a richer, almost whiskey-like color and taste.

Master distiller Aaron Bergh was destined for this adventure. During Prohibition, the Feds shut down his family’s moonshining operation—but not for very long. A century later, the law came knocking again, because the college authorities didn’t appreciate Aaron making hooch in his dorm. Calwise Spirits is Aaron’s ode to this renegade heritage, and a nod to his homeland of coastal California. Now established as one of the youngest master distillers in the world, he has created a line of premium spirits that embody the essence of the Golden State, infusing them with native ingredients that provide a pure taste of liquid California. Visit CalwiseSpirits.com.

Founded by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker in 1996, Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a California beer company with three innovative brewing facilities. Firestone Walker’s main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. The Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers and limited local offerings. Firestone Walker is also the brewery behind 805, one of the nation’s fastest-growing beers. Firestone Walker was recently named “Best American Brewery of the Decade” by Paste Magazine.

Pike Taproom Opens in Ballard

December 8, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Pike TaproomSEATTLE — Pike Taproom opens today at 3pm on bustling Ballard Ave in the former Bramling Cross space in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of this vibrant community,” says Drew Gillespie, president of Pike Brewing. “It’s exciting to open the doors and introduce our new and improved beers, new team, and fresh look to the neighborhood.”

The taproom features a full bar, wine, canned beers, and eight taps with a rotating selection of Pike brews, as well as a cider and a beer from a neighboring Ballard brewery.

To celebrate the move into Ballard, Pike’s head brewer, Leslie Shore, created a collaboration beer with the talented folks at Stoup Brewing.

New Kidz on THIS Block IPA (ABV 6.8% IBU: 37 SRM: 3) incorporates some fun hopping techniques for a whole lot of citrus, berry, and tropical aromas and flavors from Mosaic, Citra, and a touch of Sabro. New Kidz on THIS Block IPA joins the opening lineup of Space Needle West Coast IPA, Post Alley Pils, Uptown Hazy IPA, Kilt Lifter Scotch Ale, Pike Place Pale, Cosmic Pulp Juicy IPA, and Tieton Dry Apple Cider.

House cocktails include Cran Royal with gin, cranberry shrub, all spice syrup, and champagne; Minted Cucumber Collins with vodka, lemon, cucumber, simple syrup, mint, and soda water; Market Manhattan with bourbon, infused sweet vermouth, and aromatic bitters; and Chamomile Sour with whiskey, chamomile infused rye, amaro vecchio, lemon, brown sugar syrup, and egg whites.

Ethan Stowell, consulting chef for Pike Brewing culinary operations, created a menu that features burgers and wings with a twist.

The menu includes traditional burgers, as well as a Fried Fish option with panko breaded rockfish, lettuce, tomato and tartar; Seatown Hawaiian with a beef patty, spam, Swiss, shredded lettuce, teriyaki, pineapple, and red pepper relish; Smokin’ Da Gouda Bacon with a beef patty, smoked gouda, bacon, crispy onions, sweet pickles, barbeque sauce, and mayo; Pike Blue Ribbon with panko breaded chicken, ham, Swiss, shredded lettuce, and mayo; and an Ebi Burger with a panko breaded shrimp patty, American cheese, lettuce, Mama Lil’s Peppers, and togarashi tartar.

The chicken wings are brined and then dusted in potato flour making them crispy, and gluten free! Wings come by the dozen of half dozen and offer seven different sauce options for dipping: Monks, House Hot, Sweet Chili, Garlic Parm, BBQ, Buffalo, and Teriyaki. Sharable sides include Loaded Tots, Ranch Fries and the famed Pike Pretzel served with Pike Stout mustard.

The 2,500 square foot space was designed by Kelley Moore and has a completely different vibe from Pike Pub. Moore added a stylish green leather banquette that runs along one of the exposed brick walls, modern lighting fixtures, mirrors, and large scale black and white photos that show the history of Pike Brewing. The space offers seating for 45, as well as 8 seats at the bar which boasts a custom designed brushed metal backbar. A neon Pike sign welcomes guests into the taproom. The front of the space offers shuffleboard and couches are vintage-inspired truck seats, ideal for lounging with friends over beers. Two dartboards adorn the back of the space and televisions are placed thoughtfully throughout the room for cheering on your favorite team.

Pike Taproom is located at 5205 Ballard Ave NW in Seattle, Washington.
