About Pizza Port Brewing Company

In March of 1987 Gina and Vince Marsaglia, a pair of siblings in their 20′s, bought a struggling pizza place in the sleepy coastal town of Solana Beach, just north of San Diego. Early on, Vince took advantage of free space in the restaurant’s storage area to dabble with home brewing. The hobby took off and at the urging of friends and fans, Vince and Gina decided to go into the brewpub business. Pizza Port offered its first craft-brewed beers to patrons in 1992 and quickly gained a reputation in San Diego’s growing craft beer scene. Following their success at the Solana Beach location the company has been steadily expanding. Location #2 opened in 1997 in Carlsbad. Location #3 opened in 2003 in San Clemente. In 2008 a premium bottle shop was added adjacent to the Carlsbad location, which offers hundreds of options from other breweries in the craft beer community. Pizza Port location #4 opened in 2010 in Ocean Beach. And, most recently, location #5 opened in 2013 in the Bressi Ranch community of Carlsbad and introduced a canning line to allow Pizza Port beers to find their home on store shelves across San Diego County!

Outer Range Brewing Opening Second Location in the Heart of the French Alps

January 31, 2022 by Mike Curme

FRISCO, Colorado – Outer Range Brewing (ORB), Colorado’s Award-winning craft brewery and apres hub, announced Saturday that they are taking their quality craft beer and mountain lifestyle concept to the heart of the French Alps, with a second location in the picturesque, quaint town of Sallanches, France. Set to open in winter 2022, the Sallanches brewery will include a Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant, coffee roaster, a private event space for large parties or weddings, and a climbing wall with floor-to-ceiling views of Mont Blanc.

“When thinking about our next location, we knew we had to find a location as aspirational and awe-inspiring as our original location in Frisco,” explained ORB Co-Founder, Lee Cleghorn. “Our motto is ‘leave the life below,’ so we had to stay true to our values and go big with our next move. So why not go to the place where apres was invented?”

Over the last several years, Co-Founders Lee and Emily Cleghorn travelled to Europe on several occasions to partner with breweries through tap takeovers and collabs, experiences that allowed them to develop close friendships with the European beer community and continued to fuel their vision of expanding internationally. Like their Summit County homebase, Sallanches is surrounded by legendary mountains and communities rooted in outdoor recreation. “The similarities between Sallanches and Frisco are remarkable,” explained Emily. “We were absolutely blown away by the incredible mountainscapes and down-to-earth local community. It felt like home away from home.”

The brewery location has been secured, and construction is set to begin this spring. As for the beer, they’ve purchased identical brew systems to assure the beer brewed overseas will be of the same quality they’ve become known for in the US. The Sallanches tap list will include many of the flagship beers brewed in Frisco, but they also look forward to learning new techniques from their European brewers, and plan to allow their brewers to work between both locations. Emily and Lee will move to Sallanches for at least a year or two to get it going but will continue to travel back and forth between Colorado and France.

About Outer Range Brewing

Outer Range Brewing is a community-driven microbrewery in the small mountain town of Frisco, Colorado. Co-founder and Head Brewer Lee Cleghorn’s love of craft beer began when he lived in Belgium as a teenager, where the first beers he ever drank were world-class Belgian ales. That background has served as inspiration for his IPAs, which showcase the ester profile of these traditionally hop-forward beers. A graduate of the American Brewers Guild Brewing Science and Engineering school in Vermont, Lee runs Outer Range with his wife and co-founder Emily, who is the Chief Marketing Officer and leads the brewery’s branding, marketing, and sales efforts. They met while homebrewing beer together ten years ago, and today, brew for and with a passionate community who lives at the intersection of craft beer and the outdoor mountain lifestyle.

Indeed Brewing Company Partners with Hohenstein’s to Distribute Beer in Twin Cities

January 26, 2022 by Mike Curme

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – Indeed Brewing Company is excited to announce its partnership with Hohenstein’s as its distribution partner in the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minnesota.

Since 2012, Indeed Brewing has self-distributed its beer in the Twin Cities area; it has grown to be one of the largest self-distributing craft breweries in the country. As Indeed approaches its 10th year of business, the timing is right to transition its Twin Cities distribution to Hohenstein’s—a family-owned, independent business with a focus on craft beer.

“We are very proud of what we have built over the past 10 years. We sold and delivered more than 1 million cases of beer in the Twin Cities since we made our first delivery in August 2012. Each of those cases have been building blocks in the positive relationships we have with local retailers and the positive experiences consumers have come to expect when they buy Indeed beer,” says Tom Whisenand, Co-Founder and CEO, Indeed Brewing Company. “We’ve believed for a very long time that there would be no better distribution partner for Indeed in the Twin Cities than Hohenstein’s. This partnership will enable us to do even more for our retailers, customers, and community.”

Indeed embarks on this transition with a keen eye toward the future and innovation of its products with a renewed focus on what it hopes to do best: positively impact communities with quality beers, people, and experiences. It will retain a sales team to support its brand in the Twin Cities. Future plans include an increased capacity and quality in brewing and packaging and improved taproom spaces.

“We’re very excited about this partnership with Indeed. Their brands have been part of the fabric of the Twin Cities’s craft beer scene since they started brewing back in 2012,” says Karl Hohenstein, Owner, Hohenstein’s. “We’ve been distributing beers for over 70 years now, and Indeed is the perfect fit for what we look for in a brewing partner.”

Hohenstein’s began distributing Indeed beer on January 17, 2022. It will sell Indeed beer alongside other respected craft breweries in its portfolio, including Fulton Brewing, Bell’s Brewery, and Lagunitas Brewing Company.

About Indeed Brewing Company

At Indeed Brewing Company, we’re cultivating an artfully eclectic line-up of beers from the heart of Northeast Minneapolis and our new home in the Walker’s Point neighborhood of Milwaukee. Indeed’s diverse offerings are anchored by its flagship Day Tripper Pale Ale, driven by new hits like Flavorwave IPA and Pistachio Cream Ale, and elevated by its series of wild barrel-aged beer. Well-known as an engaged and community-oriented brewery, Indeed’s taprooms are warm, welcoming, and home to Indeed We Can, the company’s employee-driven charitable giving program, which donates 100% of taproom net profits to an employee-sponsored local nonprofit every Wednesday of the year. Indeed believes innovation isn’t just one thing—it’s a culture created around good people, good beers, and good experiences. Join them in the pursuit of what’s good.

About Hohenstein’s

We are a family distributor located in Woodbury, Minnesota. Our history traces back to 1946 when Karl Hohenstein Sr. took over the family business after returning from World War 2. Since then, Hohenstein’s has built a legacy of lasting relationships with retailers and beverage suppliers. We pride ourselves on adapting to the ever-changing beverage landscape by working with our retailers and suppliers to grow everyone’s business the best way we can.

Shiner Announces New Entry Into the IPA Category with Flagship Release of Tex Hex IPA Franchise

January 22, 2022 by Mike Curme

SHINER, Texas – The independent, family-owned makers of the iconic Shiner Bock introduce their new IPA series, Shiner Tex Hex IPA, beginning with the launch of the flagship Bruja’s Brew, a mystical IPA brewed with cactus water. Fans of Shiner have consistently requested the brand have a bigger presence in IPA, the largest and fastest-growing beer category in the U.S. Bruja’s Brew will be the first of three new IPAs launched under the Tex Hex umbrella in 2022.

Tex Hex Bruja’s Brew is a mythical IPA brewed with cactus water and Amarillo hops, an ode to the brand’s Texas roots. The beer delivers a hops-forward aroma and flavor that is a mix of bright, citrusy, resinous and tropical, featuring a medley of tangerine, pineapple, citrus and stone fruit. Initial consumer testing revealed that the brew outperformed the leading national and local IPA offerings in a series of blind tastings.

To capture the imagination of IPA drinkers, Shiner is also introducing the character of “La Bruja”, the alchemist, who is prominently featured on Tex Hex cans and packaging. La Bruja is a dark, mysterious shaman who roams the Texas desert gathering ingredients for her otherworldly creations. Brewed with fire, magic, and sin, her IPAs are only for the worthy, the ones called by the wind.

“Shiner could not be more excited by the launch of Tex Hex IPA. Shiner fans have demanded that we get back in the IPA category, and we believe Tex Hex delivers in a groundbreaking way,” says Matt Pechman, Shiner Beers Head of Marketing. “With unique Southwestern ingredients like cactus water, and a taste that we know connects with IPA drinkers, we are incredibly proud of this beer. We can’t wait to see what else La Bruja has in store for us in 2022 and beyond.”

Tex Hex Bruja’s Brew IPA (7% ABV) is rolling out in limited distribution in Texas and nationally throughout January with plans for a full-scale launch in the spring. It will be sold in 6-and 12 pack cans, with additional formats to come in the future.

Mixing Up 2022 with the Jai Alai IPA Mixed Pack

January 19, 2022 by Mike Curme

TAMPA, Florida – Cigar City Brewing (CCB), the Southeast’s leading craft brewery, has announced the release of the Jai Alai IPA Mixed 12-Pack, a variety pack of four different iterations of its flagship beer in a single package. Offering three twelve-ounce cans each of Jai Alai IPA, Jai Low IPA, the highly sought-after White Oak Jai Alai IPA, and the much-anticipated new Pineapple Tangerine Jai Alai IPA, this new Mixed 12-Pack is poised to continue the formidable growth trajectory for the Jai Alai IPA brand family. The new variety pack is currently available in the Spruce Street Taproom and will see gradual distribution across Cigar City Brewing’s national footprint beginning in January 2022.

With the new release, CCB looks to continue the success Jai Alai IPA, a singular hop-forward ale that has become synonymous with American craft beer.  Introduced in 2009, Jai Alai IPA helped reimagine American IPAs by eschewing the style’s piney bitterness in favor of vibrant notes of tangerine, clementine and orange zest.  The brand has grown to become one of the best-selling craft brand families in the US, with twelve packs of the classic Jai Alai IPA becoming the best-selling craft beer item in Florida grocery stores and a top 30 craft beer item in grocery stores across the United States (IRI, YTD thru 11.21).  The tropical fruit-forward IPA is now found in retail outlets from St. Petersburg, Florida to St. Petersburg, Russia and has earned Cigar City Brewing international renown at beer competitions and on draft lists across the world. Three twelve-ounce cans of Jai Alai IPA serve to anchor the Jai Alai IPA Mixed 12-Pack, drawing in consumers with its familiar green and orange packaging.  Complementing original Jai Alai IPA cans inside the 12-Pack are three variations on its iconic recipe. White Oak Jai Alai IPA uses the addition of oak spirals to impart coconut and vanilla qualities to match the base beer’s fruit notes, and has become one of the most coveted beers in the CCB lineup. Having not seen distribution in recent years, the fan-favorite White Oak Jai Alai is sure to be an allure to CCB consumers. Additionally, the Mixed 12-Pack introduces Pineapple Tangerine Jai Alai IPA, a new recipe that utilizes fruit additions that emphasize the hallmark tropical notes of Jai Alai IPA, proffering truly remarkable fruit flavors.  Pineapple Tangerine Jai Alai is currently available exclusively within the Jai Alai IPA Mixed 12-Pack. Rounding out the pack is Jai Low IPA offering a lower alcohol, lower calorie interpretation of CCB’s flagship beer that utilizes the same hop varieties that make Jai Alai IPA so memorable.

We’re thrilled to offer hop heads a new way to enjoy their favorite IPA,” says Julia Stewart, Marketing Manager for Cigar City Brewing.  “The Jai Alai IPA Mixed 12-Pack delivers new and familiar recipes inside the same package, all the while bolstering the profile of our flagship beer. The new pack develops Jai Alai as a brand that can meet the needs of every Jai Alai drinker.”

Select markets around the US will receive initial deliveries of the Jai Alai IPA Mixed 12-Pack in January 2022, with footprint-wide distribution arriving soon after.  Cigar City Brewing’s Jai Alai Mixed 12-Pack will be available in the nation’s finest grocery stores, package stores, liquor stores and independent beverage retailers.

Land-Grant Releases Webb Black IPA In Honor of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope

January 18, 2022 by Mike Curme

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Land-Grant Brewing Company announced the ninth beer in their series of space-themed beers: Webb Black IPA – named in honor of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. The brewery’s annual “Space-Grant” series seeks to celebrate the spirit of space exploration and discovery through the release of deep-space-black IPAs, and is named for an aerospace-focused spin-off of the Land-Grant University program.

Land-Grant’s release of Webb Black IPA, which occurred mere weeks after the JWST was launched into orbit, pays timely homage to NASA’s scientific successor to Hubble. At more than 100 times more powerful than Hubble, the Webb telescope will be able to tell us more about the birth of galaxies, stars and planets further back in time than ever before.

When it came to planning for this year’s release, Land-Grant Brewing Company’s President and Co-Founder, Adam Benner – who has had an affinity for space exploration from a young age – knew right away that the beer had to showcase NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

“I remember, as a kid, saving the front page of the newspaper when they published in color the Pillars of Creation from the Hubble Telescope,” Benner said. “We are all just as excited to see what new discoveries come from the JWST, so it was a no-brainer to honor it through this year’s Space-Grant beer.”

Webb Black IPA embodies Land-Grant’s mission of community, education, and storytelling through its masterfully crafted recipe and beautifully designed packaging. Webb’s sleek, matte black and shiny gold-foiled label depicts the James Webb Space Telescope and the 18 hexagonal segments that make up its mirror, and a small blurb about the incredible instrument for customers to read. As for the beer itself, though the recipe differs from past Space-Grant brews, Land-Grant Head Brewer Dan Shaffer did draw some inspiration from the recipe of the 2017 Space-Grant release, Godspeed.

“Having done a coffee variant the last two years, we were excited to return the black IPA to its truest expression with this recipe,” Shaffer said. “The malt bill was based on my favorite Black IPA, and we paired Galaxy hops with Amarillo and Mosaic cryo hops in a stripped-down version of Godspeed’s hop schedule to create a lightly sweet and firmly bitter brew with tropical, citrus and cocoa notes.

Space-Grant Webb Black IPA is now available at the Land-Grant’s Franklinton taproom in downtown Columbus, and in select craft beer retailers around central Ohio. It is also available to order online from Land-Grant, but shipping is limited to the state of Ohio. Webb Black IPA registers a 8.2% ABV and retails for $11.99/six pack. You can also learn more about Webb on Land-Grant’s Beers with the Brewers Podcast, available to stream wherever you get your podcasts.

These beers along with the breweries we’ve invited to work on them, and venues where we will be holding their releases, tell the story of HenHouse’s first decade by honoring many of those who’ve played a part in it. This project features contributions from craft beer pioneers who laid the groundwork that made companies like HenHouse possible, partners who have helped us grow and improve over the past decade, and trailblazers at work today making this industry more diverse, equitable, and exciting!

Specific details on each week’s releases will roll out week-by-week, as we offer one bottled release and one canned release every Friday and Saturday between January 7th and February 5th. What we can tell you today is that the beers offered in bottles will be brewed to keep and treasure while the canned offerings are intended to be consumed fresh! Each week’s releases will be accompanied by events that will take place from Portland, OR to Santa Cruz, CA.

Virginia Beer Company Releases 2021 Lineup of Evil Santa Spiced Milk Stouts

Williamsburg, Virginia – This holiday season, The Virginia Beer Company ushers in the 6th annual release of its Evil Santa series of Spiced Milk Stouts.

Evil Santa (brewed with Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Allspice, & Milk Sugar) returns annually with an array of variants. This year that includes Double Chocolate Espresso Evil Santa (brewed with Cacao Nibs & Espresso) and Vanilla Latte Evil Santa (brewed with Vanilla & Coffee). New to the variant lineup this year was also Peppermint Hot Chocolate Evil Santa (brewed with Peppermint, Vanilla, Marshmallows, & Cacao Nibs)!

“On Black Friday every year, we release Double Evil Santa,” notes VBC Director of Sales Michael Rhodes. “This 11.3% abv Imperial version was aged in Bourbon Barrels for 9 months. Then for the first time ever, we developed a super limited Double Evil Santa variant aged in Apple Brandy Barrels! This small batch Double Evil Santa variant is our most limited release of 2021.”

“We’ve seen the Evil Santa lineup grow from one offering in 2016 to a family of offerings in 2021,” recollects VBC Co-Founder Robby Willey. “We’ve brewed 11 variants of Evil Santa since 2016, plus numerous ‘brite keg’ one-offs that are tapped throughout the holiday season.”

In 2020, Evil Santa also went international with deliveries to folks on the Nice List in Japan, the Netherlands, France, and the UK. This year, Double Chocolate Espresso variant was actually developed specifically for an importer out of the UK.

Notes Michael Rhodes: “Evil Santa has become one of our most sought after releases of the year, so we’ve really leaned into the festive nature of the beer with our own Santa costume, Evil Santa scented candles, Evil Santa ornaments, and Evil Santa glassware. We have seen demand/interest/sales for Evil Santa increase annually since our first batch back in 2016. We’ve brewed more variants and more volume each year since that first batch, and distributed the beer farther & wider every year since 2016, for which we are very grateful!”

In Virginia outside of the brewery (401 Second Street, Williamsburg, VA 23185), the best place to find Evil Santa cans is at local bottle shops; Total Wine stores; and select grocers like Wegman’s, Kroger, Harris Teeter, and Costco. In New York, Evil Santa is available through TapRm. In Japan, Evil Santa is available through Cardinal Trading Japan. In the Netherlands and select Western European countries, Evil Santa is available through USA Beer. In France, Evil Santa is available through Brothers Loving Beer. In the UK, Evil Santa is available through Beer52.

All of the brewery’s Evil Santa releases tie in with an annual food & goods drive for the Williamsburg House of Mercy, holiday music pop-ups throughout December, and an “Evil SantaCon” coming to the brewery’s taproom and beer garden on Saturday, 12/18/2021.
