Redhook Brewery Releases Storm Surge Hazy IPA in Washington

April 13, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Redhook BrewerySEATTLE – Redhook Brewery’s newest offering, Storm Surge Hazy IPA, is now on shelves across Washington. Storm Surge is juicy and hazy, providing tropical and citrusy fruit-forward hops that converge with a light malt body and a delightfully crisp finish. The beer is an ode to the waves of life and sometimes the rough seas that toss your ship to and fro. Whatever the storm surge brings your way, Storm Surge is here to remind fans that they’ve got this!

Storm Surge IPA is made of four different and dynamic hops – Galaxy, Mosaic, Lemondrop, and Cascade – encompassing a light malt body with flavors of pineapple, mango, and citrus, perfect to enjoy as the weather gets warmer. Storm Surge is packed with an ABV of 6.8% and is available in 12oz can 6-packs throughout Washington. For more information, check out the Storm Surge Hazy IPA video here.

“It is a big juicy IPA full of orange flavors and tropical notes,” said Joel Kosic, Lead Innovation Brewer at Redhook Brewery. “We think we’ve hit a winner by pairing a couple of heavy hitter hops like Galaxy, Mosaic, Lemondrop, and Cascade. Galaxy was chosen for its tropical characteristic, Mosaic for its dynamism, Cascade for its pleasant, spicy essence, and then Lemondrop to bring out some nice juicy orange characteristics in the beer. This is a beer for everyone and we can’t wait for fans to try it themselves.”

Old Nation to Release Greenstone IPA, Pret Belgian-Style Wit and 70+ IPA

April 13, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Old Nation BreweryWILLIAMSTON, Mich. — Old Nation Brewing Company is ready for porch drinking-season with the return of two fan favorites – the Tart Strawberry M43 IPA and Greenstone IPA, and the launch of to two brand new beers – Pret, a new Belgian style wit, and 70+, a West Coast style IPA.

Old Nation is bringing Tart Strawberry M-43 back for a limited time. This fruit enhanced version of the brewery’s iconic M-43 IPA adds a high-quality strawberry extract and a slight PH adjustment to achieve the perfect tartness.

“Strawberry M43 has been a great way for Old Nation to welcome summer for the last four years,” said Travis Fritts, senior brewer and co-founder of Old Nation. “In 2020, we waited until August to release due to COVID-19 concerns, but we’re back in late April in 2021 and looking forward to welcoming all good things for the rest of the year!”

The first run of Tart Strawberry M-43 sold out within 2 hours and each subsequent batch has cleared the shelves very quickly. Because of its popularity, Old Nation has increased production for this season. Tart Strawberry M-43 will be available on draft and 16-ounce can four-packs in Michigan with limited out of state distribution starting on April 20th.

Greenstone: Bringing Back an Easy-Drinking New England Style IPA

Originally released in 2017, Greenstone (ABV 5.5% and 40 IBU) is an easier drinking offering in Old Nation’s New Orthodox Series, using pale barley, oat, wheat and rye malts in conjunction with Magnum, Michigan grown Chinook, Michigan Crystal and Simcoe hops from Yakima valley in the Pacific Northwest. The resulting profile carries notes of mango accentuated by the light nature of spruce in the very back end, all supported by the subtle spiciness of rye malt.

“The relatively low ABV of 5.5% and more classic American Pale Ale profile makes this a brewer’s favorite and seems to keep Old School and Newer Craft Beer fans coming back for more,” said Fritts. “A lighter, easy drinking hazy pale ale with uncompromising material selection seems to check a lot of boxes for many different kinds of beer fans!”

Available in a four-pack of 16-ounce cans, Greenstone will be sold in all markets that carry Old Nation products beginning on April 12th.

Creating A Classic: Say Hello to 70+, a West Coast Style IPA

Having made multiple IPAs over their years, Old Nation certainly has their list of favorites, and classic West Coast IPAs are at the top of the bill. With the introduction of 70+ West Coast IPA (ABV 6.8%), Old Nation brings a classic, straight down the middle pilsner malt bill with a more classic aggressive 72 IBU providing the traditional bitter balance of the style. Using a combination of Columbus and Simcoe hops for their pine/resiny notes along with Amarillo for citrus and floral notes, Old Nation’s brewers added the proprietary Idaho 7 for a new-school tropical twist.

Fritts said, “I love the depth, complexity and almost overwhelming aromatic nature of classic west coast IPA. After the introduction of New England style Haze-bombs, it seemed like the West Coast version lost a bit of traction. With 70+ we’re honoring the style in all of its glory and sharing our memories of California version during the Craft boom of the late 90’s with an approachable twist from Idaho 7 hops.”

Available in a four-pack of 16-ounce cans, 70+ West Coast IPA will be sold in all markets that carry Old Nation products beginning on April 12th.

The Introduction of Pret: A Historically Inspired Wit to Welcome Summer

Old Nation will also be releasing Pret, a Belgian-style wit that takes its inspiration from the Belgian brewing traditions of the past to craft the perfect beer to celebrate the coming of spring.

Pret (ABV 5%) has a strong backbone of wheat and oat malts, which give body and fullness to the light citrus notes of coriander and bitter orange peel. The faint citrus presence on the finish along with a slight acidity cleanses the palate and belies the relatively substantial body of the beer. Notes of chamomile and very slight herbal hops add color to the light, ephemeral nature of Pret Wit.

“Pret means “ready” to most Francophones and “fun” in the Belgian Flemish dialect of Dutch. We think this beer lives up to both of those interpretations!” said Fritts. “For me, it’s a sense of history in a glass. You could imagine people celebrating the arrival of spring in the early 19th century before the rise of industrialization in a way that would feel very comfortable to modern folks.”

The determination to create the perfect witbier included sourcing premium ingredients, such as the perfect oat malt to pair with carefully selected bitter orange peel and coriander ground the day the beer is brewed versus powdered.

“There are too many instances in commercial brewing where developing a new beer revolves around price point where you start with the desired shelf price and work the recipe backwards,” said Fritts. “We took the opposite approach and decided to make the very best wit example we could.”

Available in a four-pack of 16-ounce cans, Pret will be sold in all markets that carry Old Nation products beginning on April 19th.

Catawba Island BrewingPort Clinton, Ohio — Catawba Island Brewing Co. has announced that the company is undergoing a major expansion to their Port Clinton location that will allow the brewery to produce nearly twice as much beer immediately, and up to four times more in the future without any additional upgrades.

“What this [expansion] really does is, it gets us in a position to grow,” says Mike Roder, founder of the brewery and a Port Clinton native. “We found a property that worked for the brewery, and we went with it, but it wasn’t enough to grow with. Now it is.”

Expected to be operable by mid-April, the expansion will add 1,200 square feet of brewing space, 800 square feet of cold storage, and additional canning and quality control space.

Estrella Jalisco And Sofia Reyes Introduce New Tropical Chamoy Michelada

April 10, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Anheuser Busch LOS ANGELES — With more than 100 years of Mexican brewing tradition, Estrella Jalisco is announcing the latest addition to its Michelada portfolio with the new Tropical Chamoy Michelada. The refreshing and flavorful lager is a fruity spin on the Mexican brunch staple, arriving just in time for the outdoor dining boom this Spring. Featuring a 3.5% ABV, the traditional lager packs a delicious punch, blending the sweet and tart taste of pineapple with a kick of heat from clamato and chamoy.

But like… WTF is Chamoy? The colorful Mexican flavor is widely loved but hard to describe. In fact, the term doesn’t even have an official definition! To help solve the age-old mystery, Estrella Jalisco is enlisting help from Mexican singer, songwriter and chamoy-enthusiast Sofia Reyes, who is rallying fans to submit their best definition of chamoy with @Estrella Jalisco for a chance to win two Tropical Chamoy swag kits and a year-long supply of Tropical Chamoy Micheladas. Comment with your definition through April 15 using @EstrellaJalisco, #TropicalChamoy and #contest on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

“Growing up in Monterrey, chamoy is a flavor I loved putting on candy and fruit — it sparks nostalgia and even now I enjoy it on the rim of my beers and micheladas! It shocked me to learn that it’s not in the English or Spanish language dictionary,” says Sofia Reyes. “I’m excited to help Estrella Jalisco spread awareness of chamoy’s wonderful and complex flavor and I’m looking forward to seeing all the creative definitions people share!”

Estrella Jalisco also believes it’s time to add some new flavor to the dictionary. To help define the sweet-salty-spicy-sour flavor once and for all, Estrella Jalisco is launching a petition asking Merriam-Webster to add chamoy to the dictionary. Fans are invited to sign the petition at change.org/definechamoy.

“Our Tropical Chamoy Michelada is a completely new flavor for American consumers in a ready-to-drink product, designed to evoke a modern connection to a Mexican tradition,” says Jayden Kahl, Senior Director, Estrella Jalisco, Anheuser Busch. “But while people absolutely love chamoy, most don’t know how to define it. As we introduce chamoy’s unique, delicious taste to a wider audience, we’re hoping to open more palates to a Mexican staple, and give it the recognition it deserves.”

About Estrella Jalisco

Born in the cultural capital of Guadalajara, Jalisco over 100 years ago, Estrella Jalisco is a refreshing, traditional lager increasingly becoming a Mexican favorite among cerveza aficionados. Estrella Jalisco is best enjoyed in a wide-top pilsner glass and can also be found as ready-to-drink micheladas in mango, piña and tropical chamoy flavors for a flavorful spin on a Mexican classic. Launched in the U.S. in 2015, Estrella Jalisco believes a more colorful world is a brighter world which is why the brand made a $1M commitment to brighten 100 communities across the U.S. by 2025. Bent Water Brewing Company Launches Supercharger NEIPA

April 10, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Bent Water BrewingLYNN, Mass. — Bent Water Brewing Company is releasing a brand new line of IPAs starting this month. The Lynn Tribute Series will feature rotating installments with unique ingredients and names that highlight stories and features of the brewery’s home city of Lynn.

“Lynn is a terrific place, and we wanted to brew a series of beers that helps tell some of the city’s stories,” said Aaron Reames, co-founder and President, Bent Water Brewing. “The Lynn Tribute Series serves as a way to bring attention to some of the unique elements that make the city such a rare gem: it has a history of industry and innovation, multiple beaches, great restaurants celebrating a rich history of cultural backgrounds, and one of the best spots for hiking and exploring in the state: Lynn Woods. That combination of different characteristics make it such an appealing place to be, and when you take into account the terrific water source on top of that, we couldn’t be happier to be a part of Lynn.”

The Lynn Tribute Series will kick off with Supercharger, a nod to the first American jet engine, which was developed in Lynn. Supercharger is a New England IPA brewed with Simcoe, Amarillo, Azacca, and Columbus hops. The aroma is bright citrus and tropical fruits, floral undertones, and a touch of pine. The beer is smooth and filled with tropical fruit flavors, a full mouthfeel and a touch of bitterness to balance the slight malt sweetness.

“We thought IPAs were a no-brainer for the Lynn Tribute Series,” said Adam Denny Golab, head brewer at Bent Water and Lynn resident. “It’s been the most popular style of craft beer for decades, although the most sought-after versions of it have changed over the years. At Bent Water, we think we do a good job of balancing the traditional favorites like the West Coast style IPA against the style that most people can’t get enough of these days, the New England IPA. Like the city of Lynn, we’re adaptable and like to honor history while embracing the future.”

Three of the brewery’s IPAs have received high praise in the last year. Sluice Juice New England IPA and Thunder Funk IPA were recently awarded rankings of 94 and 95 respectively from noted beer & spirits publication, Wine Enthusiast, which categorized both beers as Superb. Equivalent Exchange, the brewery’s hazy New England Double IPA, scored a 91 from Craft Beer & Brewing, which categorizes the beer as Exceptional.
