Sprecher Brewery to Release Lightship 57 Session IPA

November 6, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

GLENDALE, Wis. – Sprecher Brewery will tap its newest beer, Lightship 57, a full-flavored, light-bodied session IPA on November 8th. Zythos, Simcoe and Centennial hops give character to this tasty brew, which is best described as refreshingly hoppy with stone fruit, citrus, pine and tropical notes. Subtle malts round out the flavor profile and create just the right amount of body. Clocking in at 75 BUs (bitterness units) and just 4.5% abv (alcohol by volume), Lightship 57 is a terrific all occasion beer sure to please a range of palates.

“We wanted to challenge ourselves to brew a style of beer we hadn’t done before. Lightship 57 is an easy-drinking beer that is on the opposite end of the spectrum from our barrel aged beers and some of our Belgians. In terms of hop aroma, flavor and balance, it’s an awesome beer. We suggest enjoying it by itself, or in a flight with our IPA and Citra Bomb,” said Anne Sprecher, communications director.

Sprecher Brewery named the new session IPA in honor of an actual lightship. Lightship 57 refers to one of three federal vessels designed and used instead of a more expensive permanent lighthouse. Built in Toledo, Ohio in 1891, Lightship 57 was stationed at Gray’s Reef in northeastern Michigan until 1923. The vessel was retired and sold in 1924, eventually moored at South Shore Beach in Milwaukee where it was used as a clubhouse for several years until being wrecked by a storm and washed into Lake Michigan. It lies in about six feet of water just off South Shore’s northern tip. In 1991 Lightship 57 was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Lightship 57 is the only example of a lightship in Wisconsin waters. Sprecher Lightship 57 is only available in draft. Look for it at bars and restaurants throughout Wisconsin.

Lightship 57 Release Parties: Fittingly, Sprecher Brewery’s Walker’s Point Taproom, 706 S. 5th Street, Milwaukee, will tap Lightship 57 during its November 8th Ladies Night Poker Party benefiting Light the Hoan.

Release parties will also be held on November 8th at all Sprecher’s Restaurants & Pubs.
