StormBreaker Brewing Celebrates Zwickelmania With Tours and Two Beer Releases

February 15, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon— StormBreaker Brewing, the award-winning Portland, OR brewpub, will celebrate Zwickelmania, the annual celebration of Oregon craft beer organized by the Oregon Brewers Guild, on Saturday, February 17, with a brand new beer and the return of an award winning favorite.

Zwickelmania was started in 2008 with the premise of bringing customers behind the scenes to offer a sneak peek at the elements of brewing that typically aren’t accessible to the general public.

StormBreaker is leaning into the traditional spirit of Zwickelmania with its celebration this year, offering visitors the opportunity to experience a tour of its production space, complete with a detailed discussion of the processes, equipment, and ingredients it uses to produce its beers. During the tour, visitors will also get to meet members of StormBreaker’s brewing and production team, who will be available to answer questions and provide further insights into the company’s brewing operations.

“Zwickelmania is a fun day for us because we’re able to give visitors access to our production space and team that we unfortunately aren’t able to do on a regular basis,” explained Rob Lutz, StormBreaker Brewing’s brewmaster and co-owner. “Our staff really enjoys the day and the opportunity it provides to interact more closely with the community. We regularly hear the feedback that when we do give tours, visitors thoroughly enjoy themselves and get a lot out of the experience.”

Visitors who participate in a tour with StormBreaker as part of Zwickelmania will receive a complimentary tasting flight at its conclusion, an opportunity to taste the output from the process, equipment, and ingredients they just learned more about.

As part of its Zwickelmania celebration, StormBreaker will also release two special beers:

Oregon IPA is a 6.4% ABV American IPA containing Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe hops that provide tropical aromas and flavors, with notes of pine.

“StormBreaker is proud to call Oregon home, so we made this beer to celebrate this lovely state and its many trails, rambling rivers, and unique adventures,” added Lutz. “We feel like it’s the perfect companion to the outdoor activities we have available to us throughout the state.”

Oregon IPA will be available on draft and in cans for to-go purchases on Saturday at both StormBreaker locations, Mississippi Ave. and St. John’s. Following Zwickelmania, It will be also available throughout Oregon and Washington.

Buffalo Smile is an 8% ABV Imperial IPA that is overflowing with a blend of hops that includes Cascade, Columbus, Ella, and Strata. It was double-dry hopped at the end of the brew cycle with four pounds per barrel of Mosaic and Amarillo. Buffalo Smile brings all the hop flavors for the hopheads, yet is smooth enough for fans of any beer style to enjoy.

Buffalo Smile medaled in the 2021 Oregon Beer Awards, earning bronze in the Imperial IPA category. This is one of the few occasions that the brewery has since released the beer, providing consumers with a rare chance to taste the award-winning recipe.

Buffalo Smile will be available on draft and in cans to-go in Oregon and Washington, as well as at all StormBreaker locations: Mississippi Ave. and St. John’s.

StormBreaker Brewing to Celebrate 10 Years with Anniversary Party on February 10th

February 9, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon – StormBreaker Brewing, the award-winning Portland, OR brewpub, will celebrate ten years of serving beer, food, cocktails, and mocktails in the community with a celebration party on Feb. 10th at its Mississippi Ave location.

“Ten years in the craft beer industry is a huge accomplishment, especially in such a competitive area as Portland, and we wanted to take the time to recognize that and celebrate it,” said Rob Lutz, StormBreaker Brewing’s brewmaster and co-owner. “A lot of really good breweries and brewpubs have come and gone during that time period, so to be here at year ten is a testament to this community and the support it’s shown us from our opening through now. Our team is looking forward to many more years of delivering great food and drink on Mississippi Ave. and in St. John’s.”

Special activities are planned for the duration of the day at StormBreaker Mississippi Ave:

  • 10 New & Vintage Beers – In addition to longtime favorites like Mississippi Red and Cloud Ripper being available, the production team will be offering ten special beers for the day, all newly brewed or vintage beers pulled from StormBreaker’s cellar. Customers interested in trying several of these special beers will have the option to purchase a 5 Beer Taster Passport between the hours of 12:00pm and 7:00pm. Two different Taster Passports will be offered, each containing five specific beers from the anniversary new & vintage list at a price discounted from purchasing five separate tastes. Those wishing to try all ten are welcome to purchase both Taster Passports. Outside of the 12-7pm timeframe, customers can purchase any of the ten new and vintage beers individually.
  • Anniversary Beer – One of the ten new and vintage beers will be a collaboration produced in conjunction with B&D Farms. The beer, named X (the Roman numeral for 10), is a 6.3% ABV single hop IPA with 63 IBUs and featuring the 2B experimental hop grown at B&D. 2B gives the beer a clean, citrus forward character with aromas of apple and pear and flavor notes of lime zest, melon, and pine.
  • Anniversary Cocktail Menu – StormBreaker’s bartenders will be mixing new cocktails created specifically for the 10th anniversary.
  • Anniversary Mocktail Menu – Continuing its commitment to broad beverage choices, StormBreaker’s bartenders will also offer a menu of mocktails created for the brewpub’s 10th anniversary. New Element, its recently released Non-Alcoholic Grapefruit Sparkling Water will also be available.
  • Whiskey Tasting – Stone Barn Brandyworks owner Sebastian Degens will be visiting to offer tastings of the distillery’s recent collaboration with StormBreaker, Barnstormer Imperial Red Straight Malt Whiskey. The whiskey used an imperial red ale from StormBreaker as its base.
  • Live Music – Local band Dadweed will play from 2:00pm-5:00pm, with edgy, jazzy, and fun renditions of traditional bluegrass music mixed with contemporary reimaginings of what a string band can be.
  • Fun for the Kids – Dillon T. Pickle, mascot for the Portland Pickles, will also make an appearance at the event to mingle and take photos.
“We really think we offer something for everyone, and we wanted this party to highlight that,” continued Lutz. “The 10th anniversary party will feature cocktails and mocktails as well as other NA offerings, great food, live music, and of course plenty of awesome beer.”

StormBreaker Brewing Releases New Mexican Dark Lager, Permission To Land

January 16, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon— StormBreaker Brewing, the award-winning Portland, OR brewery, has announced a new Mexican Dark Lager called Permission To Land to kick off the new year.

Permission to Land builds off of the success the brewery has seen the past several years with releasing dark beers in the early part of the year.

“It’s definitely the season for people to gravitate towards darker beers,” commented Rob Lutz, StormBreaker Brewing’s brewmaster and co-owner. “Like a lot of breweries, we see more demand for darker beers at this time every year, because the weather and general mood calls for them. But we wanted to give the option for those customers to get the dark beer experience with a lighter body – which for a lot of people is a big selling point after an indulgent holiday stretch.”

Permission To Land carries a 4.8% ABV and 14 IBUs, making it light and easy to drink despite its darker appearance. StormBreaker utilized Czech Saaz, New Zealand Motueka, and Hallertau Mittelfruh hops in producing the beer. The mix of ingredients allows for the lower-ABV dark beer to carry the flavor and expectations of a rich ‘winter’ beer with the drinkability of something you may drink just as easily at the beach in July.

“We used Vienna and Munich malts to provide a really rich malt character,” explained Lutz. “The final product is a nicely balanced beer with a touch of roasty goodness that is incredibly easy to drink.”

Permission To Land will be available on draft and in cans to-go at all StormBreaker locations: Mississippi Ave., St. John’s, and the Beer Cart at The Yard in Montavilla.

StormBreaker Brewing Announces Fragile, a New Italian Style Pilsner

December 20, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon— StormBreaker Brewing, the award-winning Portland, OR brewery, has announced a new holiday-themed beer, Fragile (pronounced Fra-Gee-Lay), an Italian-style pilsner. Fragile will be released in 16oz. cans on December 15th, with a special release party happening in conjunction with the brewery’s Ugly Sweater Parties at both its St. Johns and Mississippi Ave locations on December 21st.

Fragile is brewed with Ariana, Mittelfrueh, and Tettnang hops, which together produce a crisp, easy-drinking pilsner packed with fresh herbal, grassy notes and a hint of fruitiness. While many people gravitate to dark and heavy beers during the holidays, Fragile comes in at an ABV of 5.2%, providing a lighter, lower-ABV alternative to the influx of darker, heavier beers traditionally available during the holidays.

“Fragile pays homage to one of our favorite holiday movies, A Christmas Story,” stated Rob Lutz, StormBreaker Brewing’s brewmaster and co-owner. “We love finding new ways to honor our favorite holiday traditions while also creating new ones, which is why we decided to brew a light Italian-style pilsner that is perfect for all types of beer drinkers.”

StormBreaker Brewing will feature Fragile during its Ugly Sweater Parties on Thursday, December 21st. These Parties not only give guests an opportunity to get their hands on this limited beer, but also a chance to celebrate the upcoming holidays with their best holiday flair. Guests who wear and take a picture in their ugly sweaters will:

  • Be entered to win a $25 gift card to StormBreaker Brewing, redeemable at all StormBreaker locations.
  • Receive 10% off pints.
  • Receive Buy One, Get One discounts on select four packs of beer to-go.

A special holiday-themed cocktail and mocktail menu will be available featuring concoctions like:

  • Apple Mocktini – made with an apple reduction, ginger, lemon, orange juice, cardamom, and walnut bitters with a dash of cinnamon and garnished with a dried apple slice. This mocktail is available at both the Mississippi Street and St. John’s locations.
  • Who You Calling Ugly-Cranberry Rosemary French 75 – made with gin, lemon, cranberry, rosemary simple syrup, and sparkling wine. Garnished with a fresh cranberry and toasted rosemary. Available only at the Mississippi Street location.
  • Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer- a cocktail made with tequila, lime, apple reduction, ginger, orange juice, walnut, and cardamom bitters, with a dash of cinnamon. Shaken and served over ice, garnished with a sugar rim and a dry apple slice. Available only at the St. John’s location.

StormBreaker Brewing will also debut its new non-alcoholic option, New Element, a grapefruit sparkling water made in-house with fresh grapefruit, orange, and lemon juices – and no sweeteners.

“We are excited to roll out our new holiday-inspired cocktail and mocktail menu just in time for our Ugly Sweater Parties,” continued Lutz. “Being able to provide a range of different drink options beyond beer has always been something we’ve focused on. Our goal is to make StormBreaker a welcoming place for everyone, regardless of whether they consume alcohol or not. Our team had a lot of fun brainstorming new flavor combinations that embody the spirit of the holiday season.”

Fragile (Fra-Gee-Lay) will be available on draft and in cans to-go at all StormBreaker locations: Mississippi Ave., St. John’s, and the Beer Cart at The Yard in Montavilla.
