Outer Range Brewing Opening Second Location in the Heart of the French Alps

January 31, 2022 by Mike Curme

FRISCO, Colorado – Outer Range Brewing (ORB), Colorado’s Award-winning craft brewery and apres hub, announced Saturday that they are taking their quality craft beer and mountain lifestyle concept to the heart of the French Alps, with a second location in the picturesque, quaint town of Sallanches, France. Set to open in winter 2022, the Sallanches brewery will include a Nashville Hot Chicken restaurant, coffee roaster, a private event space for large parties or weddings, and a climbing wall with floor-to-ceiling views of Mont Blanc.

“When thinking about our next location, we knew we had to find a location as aspirational and awe-inspiring as our original location in Frisco,” explained ORB Co-Founder, Lee Cleghorn. “Our motto is ‘leave the life below,’ so we had to stay true to our values and go big with our next move. So why not go to the place where apres was invented?”

Over the last several years, Co-Founders Lee and Emily Cleghorn travelled to Europe on several occasions to partner with breweries through tap takeovers and collabs, experiences that allowed them to develop close friendships with the European beer community and continued to fuel their vision of expanding internationally. Like their Summit County homebase, Sallanches is surrounded by legendary mountains and communities rooted in outdoor recreation. “The similarities between Sallanches and Frisco are remarkable,” explained Emily. “We were absolutely blown away by the incredible mountainscapes and down-to-earth local community. It felt like home away from home.”

The brewery location has been secured, and construction is set to begin this spring. As for the beer, they’ve purchased identical brew systems to assure the beer brewed overseas will be of the same quality they’ve become known for in the US. The Sallanches tap list will include many of the flagship beers brewed in Frisco, but they also look forward to learning new techniques from their European brewers, and plan to allow their brewers to work between both locations. Emily and Lee will move to Sallanches for at least a year or two to get it going but will continue to travel back and forth between Colorado and France.

About Outer Range Brewing

Outer Range Brewing is a community-driven microbrewery in the small mountain town of Frisco, Colorado. Co-founder and Head Brewer Lee Cleghorn’s love of craft beer began when he lived in Belgium as a teenager, where the first beers he ever drank were world-class Belgian ales. That background has served as inspiration for his IPAs, which showcase the ester profile of these traditionally hop-forward beers. A graduate of the American Brewers Guild Brewing Science and Engineering school in Vermont, Lee runs Outer Range with his wife and co-founder Emily, who is the Chief Marketing Officer and leads the brewery’s branding, marketing, and sales efforts. They met while homebrewing beer together ten years ago, and today, brew for and with a passionate community who lives at the intersection of craft beer and the outdoor mountain lifestyle.

Short’s Brewing Co. Shares 2021 Wrap Up

January 30, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Short's Brewing CompanyELK RAPIDS, Michigan – It was a good year. At least for Short’s Brewing Company.

2021 marked another year of growth for the brewery, after the pandemic pushed sales to record numbers in 2020. From their Bellaire Pub and Elk Rapids Pull Barn to their distribution network, 2021 ended positive with distribution sales to the market specifically up 2.3%. The brewery (including Short’s Brewing Co brands and Starcut Cider brands) ended the year with an overall production volume of 52,986 barrels, a 3.9% increase from 2020.

That increase was largely due to Local’s Light, their Premium Light Lager which grew 35% as a brand throughout their distribution footprint. In 2020 Local’s Light package sales beat 2019 sales, which was no surprise, however package sales saw an additional 20% growth over 2020 numbers. 12 packs led this charge, but the brand’s 24 pack SKU, introduced in 2020, took off in 2021.

Short’s two classic flagship brands, Soft Parade and Huma Lupa Licious IPA were not able to beat 2020 package numbers, however, their draft volumes were much closer to 2019 setting up the brewery for a successful growth path in 2022.

“It was very exciting to end 2021 with positive growth because our distributor partners and sales reps (AKA Liberators) worked very hard to beat 2020 pantry loading numbers through new marketing programs and flagship brand focus. Local’s Light was a key growth factor for us, but our dry cider, Pulsar, from our Starcut Cider brand helped push our growth into the green. I am looking forward to seeing both Local’s Light and Pulsar stand out in their respective categories and continue to gain market share this year.” Stated Pauline Knighton-Prueter, Sales Officer for Short’s.

About Short’s Brewing Company

Located in the heart of Downtown Bellaire, MI, Short’s Brewing Co. was established in 2004 by Joe Short. In 2009, Short’s began keg and bottle distribution in Michigan via their Elk Rapids Production Facility. The brewery is known widely for their flagship and experimental brews including Soft Parade, Local’s Light, and Huma Lupa Licious. Short’s prides themselves on producing fearlessly creative beers, handmade by people who care in Northern Michigan.

Short’s Brewing Co also has a passion for beverage innovation and created Starcut Ciders in 2014 and Beaches Hard Seltzer in 2019. Both brands push the boundaries of ingredients and fermentation innovation to create unique, premium beverages.

Kansas locals will recognize the brewery’s iconic two-toned cans and Celtic-style tap handles at their local shops, stores, restaurants, and bars.

About Saint Patrick’s Brewing Company

In 2012, Saint Patrick’s Brewing Company was born with the mission to reinvent what a lager beer could be while using only the freshest, highest quality ingredients. After the first three years, Saint Patrick’s expanded both taproom and barrel system, which allowed ales to enter the beer portfolio. Seven years in, Saint Patrick’s Brewing Company decided to close the taproom and focus on distribution. They joined in a strategic alliance with Arthos US Inc, the US arm of the maker of the popular “Block Buster” and “Khajuraho” beer in India. The standard of using the highest quality ingredients to create the best beer possible is essential to our brands and consumers.

In celebrating Saint Patrick’s Brewing Company’s ninth anniversary and the alliance with Arthos US, we are excited to introduce our updated logo and packaging.

“Our new logo is based on the Celtic Tree of Life. The Celtic Tree of Life symbolizes the forces of nature that come together in perfect harmony to maintain balance in the universe. We took that concept and create the ‘Celtic Tree of Beer.’ Our Celtic Tree of Beer shows all of the elements that come together in perfect harmony to brew the best beer: water, sun, grain, hops, brewer’s yeast and bees for pollination.”

History of Oktoberfest – Munich, Germany

January 29, 2022 by Dow Scoggins

History of Oktoberfest
The History of Oktoberfest Started with a Horse Race and a Marriage
The original “Oktoberfest” occurred in Munich, on October 18, 1810: For the commemoration of their marriage, Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen organized a great horse race (the marriage took place on October 12; the horse race on October 17 — therefore, there are different dates named as being the first Oktoberfest).

Since 1850, this has become a yearly event and an important component of the Oktoberfest. 8,000 people — mostly from Bavaria — in traditional costumes walk from Maximilian Street, through the centre of Munich, to the Oktoberfest. The march is led by the Münchner Kindl.

Bavaria statue above the TheresienwieseSince 1850, the statue of Bavaria has watched the Oktoberfest. This worldly Bavarian patron was first sketched by Leo von Klenze in a classic style and Ludwig Michael Schwanthaler romanticised and “Germanised” the draft; it was constructed by Johann Baptist Stiglmaier and Ferdinand von Miller.

In 1853, the Bavarian Ruhmeshalle was finished. In 1854, 3,000 residents of Munich succumbed to an epidemic of cholera, so the festival was cancelled. Also, in the year 1866, there was no Oktoberfest as Bavaria fought in the Austro-Prussian War. In 1870, the Franco-Prussian war was the reason for cancellation of the festival. In 1873, the festival was once more cancelled due to a cholera epidemic. In 1880, the electric light illuminated over 400 booths and tents. In 1881, booths selling bratwursts opened. Beer was first served in glass mugs in 1892. At the end of the 19th century, a re-organization took place. Until then, there were games of skittles, large dance floors, and trees for climbing in the beer booths. They wanted more room for guests and musicians. The booths became beer halls.

In 1887, the Entry of the Oktoberfest Staff and Breweries took place for the first time. This event showcases the splendidly decorated horse teams of the breweries and the bands that play in the festival tents. This event always takes place on the first Saturday of the Oktoberfest and symbolises the official prelude to the Oktoberfest celebration

In the year 1910, Oktoberfest celebrated its 100th birthday. 120,000 litres of beer were poured. In 1913, the Bräurosl was founded, which was the largest Oktoberfest beer tent of all time, with room for about 12,000 guests (today, the biggest tent is the Hofbräu-Festhalle, which holds 10,000).

History of Oktoberfest  – War years
From 1914 to 1918, World War I prevented the celebration of Oktoberfest. In 1919 and 1920, the two years after the war, Munich celebrated only an “Autumn Fest.” In 1923 and 1924, the Oktoberfest was not held due to inflation.

In 1933, the Bavarian white and blue flag was replaced with the standard swastika flag. From 1939 to 1945, due to World War II, no Oktoberfest took place. From 1946 to 1948, after the war, Munich once again celebrated only the “Autumn Fest.” The sale of proper Oktoberfest beer was not permitted; the guests had to make do with beer that had an alcohol content under 2%.

Since its beginnings the Oktoberfest has thus been cancelled 24 times due to war, disease and other emergencies.

History of Oktoberfest – Modern festival
Since 1950, there has been a traditional festival opening: A twelve gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the incumbent Mayor of Munich with the cry “O’zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Austro-Bavarian language) opens the Oktoberfest. The Mayor then gives the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. The first mayor to tap the keg was Thomas Wimmer.

By 1960, the Oktoberfest had turned into an enormous world-famous festival. After this foreigners began to picture Germans as wearing the Sennerhut, Lederhosen, and the girls in Dirndl. Horse races ended in 1960.

There are many problems every year with young people, who overestimate their ability to handle large amounts of alcohol. Many pass out due to drunkenness. These especially drunk patrons are often called “Bierleichen” (German for “beer corpses”). They are brought by staff to a medical tent where drunks as well as sick people are treated.

To keep the Oktoberfest, and especially the beer tents, friendly for older people and families, the concept of the “quiet Oktoberfest” was developed in 2005. Until 6:00 PM, the tents only play quiet music, for example, traditional wind music. Only after that will Schlager and pop music be played, which has led to more violence in earlier years. The music played in the afternoon is limited to 85 decibels. With these measures, the organizers of the Oktoberfest hope to curb the over-the-top party mentality and preserve the traditional beer tent atmosphere.

Since 2005 the last traveling Enterprise ride of Germany – called Mondlift – is back on the Oktoberfest.

Starting in 2008, a new Bavarian law banning smoking in all enclosed spaces that are open to the public will be in place at the Oktoberfest. This will mean a complete smoking ban inside the tents. However, after heavy losses in the 2008 local elections, the state’s ruling party wants to grant special exemptions to beer tents and small pubs. In 2008, the organizers used a special exemption in 2008 for temporary structures so smoking was permitted in the tents although the sale of tobacco was not. This policy was extended to the 2009 event. Thanks to Wikipedia for the info.

Heavy Seas Announce 15 BBL Brewhouse Release: Joose Cannon Key Lime Pie

January 29, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Heavy SeasBALTIMORE, Maryland – Heavy Seas Beer is excited to announce the next release from its 15 Barrel Brewhouse, Joose Cannon Key Lime Pie. Another exciting twist on our flagship IPA Loose Cannon, Joose Cannon Key Lime Pie is its hazier, juicer counterpart. Brewed with lime for zest and lactose for creaminess, this beer is inspired by the sweet and tart flavors of key lime pie. Perfectly tangy and velvety, Joose Cannon Key Lime really is as nice as pie.

Joose Cannon Key Lime Pie will be available in 4-packs of 16oz cans during the release on January 21st.

“We always planned on bringing Joose Cannon Key Lime Pie back,” says Heavy Seas Associate Brand Manager, Lauren Gramley. “It quickly became a staff and fan favorite, and this beer really captures that balance of sweetness and tanginess!”

“Key Lime Pie was the 3rd in our Joose Cannon series. It is a take on one of my favorite desserts – Key Lime Pie,” says Heavy Seas Brewmaster Chris Leonard. “ I’m not the biggest fruit dessert enthusiast, but somehow key lime pie has that indulgent, satisfying quality while still being refreshing and fun. We’ve used a silly amount of Lotus and Citra hops, along with lactose, 12 gallons of fresh key lime juice, and yes, graham crackers in the mash. Hopefully folks will find the beer as refreshing, satisfying and fun as I find the pie!”

Joose Cannon Key Lime Pie’s label artwork was designed by Chris Gipple of Nightshift Creative. Can image is attached.

Niagara College Brewmaster Jon Downing Receives Minister’s Award of Excellence

January 28, 2022 by Dow Scoggins

Jon Downing and the Pink Boot SocietyIt’s been almost 12 years since Niagara College launched its trailblazing Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program, which made history as the first in Canada. The program responded to an identified need for education and higher quality product in Ontario’s brewing industry, and the impact it has had on the growing industry for more than the past decade has been unrivalled.

College Brewmaster Jon Downing has been a part of it from the very beginning. In recognition of his key role in developing the program, and its major impact on helping to grow the industry, he was presented with a Minister’s Award in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

“Our brewing program at Niagara College has been instrumental in supporting the incredible growth of craft brewing in Ontario. Our Brewmaster Jon Downing has been at the lead of our NC Teaching Brewery since its inception over a decade ago and we are proud of his mentorship and support for the future brewers of Canada,” said Craig Youdale, Dean of NC’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute who nominated Downing for the award.

“Jon is not only supportive of our students, but also of the entire brewing community, by ensuring the growth and development of the industry that he loves. Our entire division is proud to have Jon on our team and we look forward to his direction to many more future brewers to come.”

Under Downing’s leadership, NC Brewmaster students have been gaining extensive hands-on training preparing them for employment in the expanding brewery, microbrewery and brewpub industries since 2010. The College’s Teaching Brewery has won numerous provincial, national and international awards for its student-crafted brews.

In 2012, NC’s first class of Brewmaster graduates set forth as pioneers in the province’s emerging craft beer scene – which has since grown from fewer than 100 breweries when the program was established, to 288 new start-ups (more than 320 breweries) by 2019.

“As we come up to the 10-year anniversary of the graduation of the first class of students, they and those that followed are the ones who have made the impact on the industry – some starting their own companies, and others working in breweries of all sizes, as brewers, head brewers and brewmasters of some of the top breweries in Ontario, leading the incredible growth we have seen in the last decade,” said Downing. “To have been a part of this all has been my pleasure, to be recognized for the part I played is awesome.”

Before Downing arrived at the College, he spent 20 years of his career opening more than 100 breweries around the world. It was his involvement with opening Ontario’s first brewpub in Welland, which led him to move to Canada from England in 1985.

Receiving a provincial award for his efforts was “totally unexpected” for Downing.

“I am honoured and deeply humbled that people think this much about what we have done to put me forward for the award, let alone to be chosen as the recipient,” he said.

For Downing, being selected for the award validates the faith that College leaders had in him when he first met with them almost 15 years ago about launching the program.

“Their support and that of many others at the College, and in industry, is what has led to our success,” he said.

Downing’s Award of Excellence in Innovation and Entrepreneurship was among seven presented to faculty and staff from postsecondary institutions across Ontario.

Minister’s Awards of Excellence
The Minister’s Awards of Excellence were introduced in 2020 to recognize the incredible work of Ontario’s faculty and staff during the early stages of the pandemic. The ministry decided to continue the tradition annually, and new categories were added this year to highlight more positive work being done at Ontario’s postsecondary institutions.

This year’s winners received a certificate signed by Minister Dunlop and were honoured at a congratulatory virtual meeting on the morning of January 21.

Bell’s Expands Distribution of No, Yeah; 12-packs Debut in Michigan

January 28, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Bell's Brewery

COMSTOCK, Michigan – Beer fans (politely) asked for more and Bell’s Brewery is excited to announce expanded distribution for its tribute to the Midwest, No, Yeah.  Bell’s easy-drinking Golden Ale first debuted in early 2021 and as of last week, began shipping to four additional states.

“We have seen a lot of success with this beer. It’s a top seller in our home market, including the Great Lakes region. And it wasn’t long after its debut that it was recognized as one of the best out there, a reflection of all the hard work that went into bringing this beer to life,” Carrie Yunker, Bell’s Executive Vice President, said. “It’s delicious; the packaging has a great personality and the name connects with folks. It really is a nice beer,” she added.

Pennsylvania, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri will join Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Minnesota as the only states where this beer is primarily available to purchase.

Those in Michigan will also see 12-packs as well. Those are also on their way to store shelves and coolers now.   No, Yeah’s packaging (4.5% Alc. By Vol.) plays into the meme culture that pokes fun at Midwestern politeness. It is available on draft and primarily in 6-pack cans. It earned a silver medal at the 2021Great American Beer Festival in Denver.

For help locating this and other Bell’s beers, use the Bell’s Beer Finder (it may still take some time for recent deliveries to update). Beer fans are also encouraged to reach out directly to their local retailer for more information on availability.

Twelve packs of No, Yeah are available now at the Bell’s General Store in Kalamazoo.

This news was one of the many peeks the brewery offered for 2022 back in December. That look ahead also included the brewery’s Box of Hearts Variety Pack, 16 oz. cans of Hopslam and more.

About Bell’s Brewery

Bell’s Brewery began in 1985 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with Larry Bell, a quest for better beer and a 15-gallon soup kettle. Since then, Bell’s has grown into one of the largest craft breweries in America, distributing to 43 states, in addition to Puerto Rico and Washington DC. The dedication to brewing flavorful, unfiltered, quality craft beers that started when Larry was a homebrewer continues today with iconic brands such as Oberon Ale and Two Hearted Ale, as well as Light Hearted Ale and Official Hazy IPA. Bell’s currently brews more than 20 beers for distribution out of its Comstock brewery as well as many small-batch beers that are served at the Eccentric Cafe in Kalamazoo. Over the years, Bell’s has become an industry leader in safety, quality, and human resources, paving the way for the hundreds of craft breweries across Michigan. Bell’s ongoing goal is to brew thoughtful, creative, and artistic ales, and strives to make craft beer welcoming and open to all.
