Colorado Craft Experts Ska Brewing and Peach Street Distillers Launch Ska Street, Boulder’s First Brewstillery

October 31, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

BOULDER, Colorado – The Legion of Ska continues to grow with Ska Street, Boulder’s first “brewstillery” concept. This joint venture by Ska Brewing and Peach Street Distillers is slated to open in the former FATE Brewing space in spring of 2020.

Peach Street Distillers was hatched in 2005 when Ska Brewing’s two co-founders Bill Graham and Dave Thibodeau found the allure of Palisade’s locally grown fruit too much to pass by. Since Peach Street’s opening, the two companies have worked side by side— with a shared sales team, and collaborations such as Modus Whiskey, and the Boomerang Barrel Program.

Backing up even further, Ska Brewing was born on Colorado’s Front Range out of the minds of Graham and Thibodeau, with the influence of Boulder’s burgeoning beer community. This area is where they grew up and learned to homebrew, where Graham attended the University of Colorado, and where many of Ska and Peach Street’s staff got their start in the brewing industry.

After 15 years of partnerships, Ska and Peach Street will finally set up shop under the same roof in spring of 2020. “A number of serendipitous factors have come together to make Boulder the answer to what we’ve been trying to do for a decade,” says Thibodeau. “when the opportunity presented itself, we jumped at this chance to call Boulder home.”

Steve Breezley, Ska’s Chief Operating Officer who formerly worked at Avery Brewing, says, “So many of us at Ska feel attached to the Boulder community— it’s active like our home in Durango, and it’s an epicenter for craft beer.”

Ska Street will integrate Ska and Peach Street’s businesses, with onsite brewing of Ska beers in a 10 barrel brewhouse and distillation of Peach Street spirits in a 450 liter still. The Brewstillery will offer 30 Ska beers on tap and a mixology program that replicates the Palisade distillery experience. Ska Street’s food menu will bring together components of each business, with music-inspired, Caribbean-influenced eats to mirror the food served at Ska’s World Headquarters in Durango, and the thoughtfully sourced farm-to-table approach that guests have come to love at Peach Street.

Ska’s experimental brewery, the Mod Project, has afforded the brewery and many of its retailers the opportunity to do some unique projects together in Durango, and at Ska Street in Boulder they plan to build upon this platform with their spirits, as well as well as their beers.

“We’re excited to get back to the Front Range, and to get more involved in Boulder,” Thibodeau says. “Beyond the new location, this is a great opportunity to pursue collaborations with accounts in the area that have been selling our beer for years.”

Von Ebert Brewing Releases Haze Hop and Agostini Pils in 16 oz. 4-Pack Cans

October 31, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

PORTLAND, Ore. — Fresh off the positive reception of its inaugural release of canned beers in September, Von Ebert Brewing is following it up with the release of Haze Hop and Agostini Pils in 16 oz. four-pack cans.

Agostini Pils will be canned and released at Von Ebert’s Glendoveer location on November 1, while Haze Hop will be canned and released at its Pearl location on October 30. The two beers will be available at both Von Ebert locations in the immediate days following each canning. They will also both be shipped to distributors in Oregon, California and Southwest Washington.

“The response to our first can release last month was overwhelmingly positive,” said Tom S Cook, owner of Von Ebert Brewing. “Haze Hop and Agostini Pils are perfect for our next limited canning run. They’re two of our most popular beers and offer a nice diversity – one being juicy and hoppy and the other being crisp and clean.”

Haze Hop

Haze Hop is a hazy pale ale brewed with Citra, Azacca, and Mandarina Bavaria hops. The 5.8% ABV, 50 IBU beer produces a mix of citrus and tropical flavors along with pleasant dank characteristics.

“Haze Hop was intended to meet the masses with an approachable, light-bodied malt bill that still encompasses what we know as the typical hazy style mouthfeel,” said Eric Ebel, Brewer, Von Ebert Brewing. “We went through a few trials to find the exact hop blend we loved, and it actually ended up being a blend of US and German grown hops, instead of the expected Southern Hemisphere hops. We’re glad people have been so receptive to such a sessionable beer in this style.”

Agostini Pils
Agostini Pils, named for the man that created the style and for legendary Italian motorcycle racer Giacomo Agostini, is an Italian-style dry-hopped pilsner. At 5.0% ABV and 40 IBUs, this beer has a solid platform for allowing the German and Slovian hops used in it to shine.

“With this being an emerging style in the US, we wanted to present our take on it and try to showcase the use of the Slovenian Styrian Cardinals in the dry-hop,” said Sean Burke, head brewer, Von Ebert Glendoveer. “I think there has been a lot of great reception to these beers and we are excited to be putting ours into cans.”

Odell Brewing Releases Year-Round Low-Calorie Good Behavior Crushable IPA

October 31, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Odell Brewing is proud to announce the latest addition to their year-round line up. Good Behavior is a 110 calorie, 4% ABV, Crushable IPA with a balanced body and crisp finish.

With a portfolio of notably hop-forward beers such as Odell IPA, Drumroll Hazy Pale Ale, and Mountain Standard IPA, Odell Brewing set out to create their first Crushable IPA. The result is Good Behavior, a low calorie, sessionable IPA that boasts explosive hop aromas of tropical fruit and peach.

“There’s plenty of 100, 95, even 80 calorie options in the market right now,” explains COO, Brendan McGivney. “After a year of small-batch, R&D testing at both of our brewhouse taprooms, we realized we weren’t going to sacrifice the flavor and body for 10 calories. We think your taste buds will agree.”

Unlike many low-cal beers and hard seltzers, Good Behavior was brewed without extracts or artificial sweeteners. All of the tropical fruit and peach flavors come from specialized brewing techniques with a blend of nine hop varieties, including Odell’s current favorite experimental, HBC 586.

“Good Behavior was built for hop lovers looking for a beer that fits in with a more balanced lifestyle,” explains CEO, Eric Smith. “It’s an IPA, that was important to us. We wouldn’t compromise the core of the style but wanted to give our fans a super crisp, sessionable finish where you can have more than one.”

Good Behavior will be priced inline with core brands, available on draft and in 6-pack cans. This beer will be one of Odell’s brand priorities for 2020 and is currently available throughout their 19-state footprint.

About Odell Brewing
Odell Brewing, the 23rd largest craft brewery in the U.S.,  is a regional, independent, and employee owned craft brewery. Since 1989, the culture of family and collaboration has thrived, fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. Two Robbers Craft Hard Seltzer Debuts in New Jersey

October 30, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

PHILADELPHIA — Hard seltzer is a booming beverage category, with major beer and alcohol brands placing big bets on its long-term potential. Vikram and Vivek Nayar, twin brothers from Philly, plan to capture a piece of it with Two Robbers, their new craft hard seltzer brand. Launched in Philadelphia earlier this year, their seltzer quickly saw success and caught local buzz for its clean, natural fruit flavors, low carb and zero sugar formulation … and a terrific origin story backed by smart branding. More recently, they announced a brewing partnership with the iconic Yards Brewing Company of Philadelphia in order to support their expansion goals.

After growing to over 300 locations in eastern PA, the brothers decided it was finally time to expand into their second market, New Jersey.

A Healthier Hard Seltzer for the Craft Beer + Cocktail Drinker
Vik and Viv Nayar spent more than a year perfecting their brewing process to create a truly light and refreshing hard seltzer without the added sugars, sweeteners, concentrates and other complex ingredients often seen in drinks and other hard seltzers. The alcohol in Two Robbers is made from 100% cold-fermented cane sugar (vs. corn, malted barley, or other ingredients) and a proprietary filtration process, which makes for an exceptionally clean seltzer base. The result is a one-of-a-kind hard seltzer with subtle and unique natural flavors from real fruits.

Two Robbers launched with three varieties that were inspired by some of the brothers’ favorite craft beer and cocktail recipes:
– Orange Mango, two fruits that were always in their kitchen growing up
– Pineapple Ginger (aka PiGi), a classic combo of tropical with a subtle ginger kick
– Watermelon Cucumber (known to locals as Wa-Kyu), a perfectly refreshing hard seltzer

Each 12-ounce can contains 5.2% ABV, 110 calories, zero sugar or sweetener, and is gluten-free. More flavors and variety packs are in the works!

What Exactly IS Hard Seltzer? What Makes Two Robbers Different?
A hard seltzer is a low calorie, low carb, alcoholic seltzer water. The alcohol in hard seltzer is made by fermenting a simple sugar (like cane sugar for Two Robbers), with a high attenuation yeast to create a dry alcoholic beverage. Unlike beer, which is usually made by fermenting malted barley (a complex carbohydrate), hard seltzers typically have little to no residual carbs or sugar, thus making a lighter and healthier alternative to beer, wine and spirits. What it’s not is a flavored malt beverage or a vodka soda.

Where to Find Two Robbers + Brand Launch Events
Two Robbers is “breaking into” (!!) the North + South Jersey markets and is currently available in 145+ bars and retailers, with more coming on line each week.

About Two Robbers
Philly residents Vivek and Vikram Nayar each had a desire to do something entrepreneurial, after spending the first few years of their careers behind a desk in the world of finance. After stumbling across the hard seltzer category in 2017 in its early days, they immediately felt there was an opportunity to create something unique and different from what was out there, so decided to take the leap. They spent the better part of a year perfecting their lighter, healthier, no-carb recipe. Then their apartment was broken into. TWICE. It seemed the only thing the robbers didn’t take was the seltzer recipe. The thieves were never caught, and when Vik sketched out their skeletal likenesses on a napkin, the Two Robbers logo and brand name were born. The brand launched in Philadelphia earlier this year with three flavors: Orange Mango, Pineapple Ginger and Watermelon Cucumber. In September, the brothers announced they would transition all production of Two Robbers to Yards Brewing Company’s new state-of-the-art brewery in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. This partnership will allow Two Robbers to continue to grow in its home market while supporting Vik and Viv’s ambitious expansion plans. Watch for new markets and flavors in the coming months. Philadelphia-based Craft Hard Seltzer (5.2% ABV) available throughout PA + NJ; other markets coming soon. Visit www.tworobbers.com.

Alaskan Brewing to Release Hard Seltzer

October 30, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

JUNEAU, Alaska– Alaskan Brewing Co. has produced award-winning craft beer since their 1986 beginnings, but the brewery’s latest release marks their first foray outside the world of malts and hops: Alaskan Hard Seltzer.

Alaskan Hard Seltzer is brewed with an ingredient that should be familiar to fans of Alaskan’s ales: locally foraged Sitka spruce tips.”We’ve been brewing beer with Sitka spruce tips for 20 years, so we knew their unique flavor profile would provide a great base for our hard seltzers,” said Alaskan Brewing Co. Product Development Lead,Dave Wilson. The initial release will feature two flavors: Spruce Lemon Lime and Spruce Cherry Grapefruit. “The spruce tips lend a citrusy, berry-like character, which naturally complements the crisp lemon-lime and cherry-grapefruit flavors in the hard seltzer,” Wilson explained.

Alaskan Hard Seltzer is brewed much like a beer, substituting fermentable sugar for malt and omitting the hops. During the fermentation process, the yeast converts every bit of sugar into alcohol, resulting in a beverage that is free of sugar and gluten, and much lower in carbs and calories than beer, coming in at an ABV of4.5%, 95 calories and 2 grams of carbs. “We’ve been perfecting our hard seltzer this year, and we’re excited to offer a sugar-free, gluten-free craft brewed beverage that reflects the quality and spirit of the Alaskan Brewing Company,” said Chief Operations Officer, Kristi McGuire. “We’re initially releasing these two new hard seltzers in our home state of Alaska, and we hope to share these Alaskan brews with some of our other markets next year.”

The bright, crisp and refreshing taste of Alaskan Hard Seltzer is represented by the vivid greens and reds of the northern lights featured on the can label, dancing across a dark Alaskan sky on a crisp, cold night.

Alaskan Hard Seltzer will be available on draft and in 6-pack cans inAlaska only starting November 1. To celebrate the launch, the BrewCrew is hosting events in Juneau and Anchorage. In Juneau, fans can get a sneak preview on Friday, October 25 from 4-6pm at the Triangle Club Bar, the Hangar on the Wharf, McGivney’s Sports Bar & Grill in the valley, and the Imperial Saloon, where the Brew Crew will be handing out Alaskan Hard Seltzer samples and giveaways during Game 3of the World Series. Anchorage fans can sample the seltzer at the release party at 907 Alehouse on November 1 from 7-10pm, with giveaways, a photo booth, and live music from I Like Robots.

Evil Genius Announces Hard Seltzer Line

October 29, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

PHILADELPHIA — Evil Genius, in Fishtown, announces the newest member of their family of adult drinks – and this baby is ready to part-y. Evil Genius Hard Seltzer will debut in a 12-can case featuring three flavors #bigmood (lemon-lime), #tbt (grapefruit) and #bestlife (black cherry). Light, refreshing and bubbly, Evil Genius Hard Seltzer is made with all-natural ingredients, and essenced with a kiss of fruit. Each seltzer is naturally gluten-free, contains no sugar and weighs in at a mere 100 calories. This new low-calorie cousin to Evil Genius Beer Company’s popular craft beer lines will go on sale at theEvil Genius Lab and Bar (1727 N Front St, Philadelphia, PA 19122)starting Tuesday, October 22, 2019. The hard seltzer line will then roll out in retail and bottle shops, and in restaurants and bars, through 23 wholesalers across seven states between now and Monday, November 4, 2019. The exact date of availability will differ in each market and at each establishment. If you don’t see Evil Genius Hard Seltzer, make sure to slide into the DM of your favorite bar/restaurant and give them a nudge.

“We really loved the idea of creating something new and different from beer,” said Evil Genius partner Trevor Hayward. “Our taproom inPhiladelphia, while the vast majority of what we sell is beer, has seen a huge rise in the demand for hard seltzer. We love to create new things, and experiment, and saw this as an opportunity to do just that with something we could see our customers wanted!”

He added, “You don’t always want to drink beer – and we get that. We also wanted to make something that wasn’t overly sugary, kept calories in check for people who were counting and not compromise on flavor. We wanted a beverage that you can sip on all day without guilt or that sugar headache that some alternatives bring. It’s also naturally gluten free, so friendly to those who need or want to avoid gluten.”

For the launch, Evil Genius partners Luke Bowen and Trevor Hayward are ready to serve up a brand new experience to their growing customer base. Bowen said, “When someone picks up our beer, and now our seltzer, we want them to have an experience. It’s not just about what’s inside that can or bottle, It’s about how it makes them feel,’what it reminds them of, and how they think about it after they’re finished. Everyone’s experience will be different, but we hope they’re reminded of a great childhood memory, enjoy the crisp and delicious taste and flavors, and come away feeling refreshed.”

Work on the hard seltzer began earlier this year in spring of 2019.The duo saw a rise in demand at The Lab and the growing popularity of other adult beverages. They had wanted to expand their offerings beyond craft beer and it made perfect sense to perfect a brand newline of locally-made small-batch hard seltzer. Evil Genius will team up for the seltzer production with their contract brewing partner, Wyndridge Farm Brewing, based in York County PA.

For the initial launch, Evil Genius looks to make just under 5,000 cases. The seltzer will start in three flavors available in a 12-can multipack, as listed below:

Grapefruit – #tbt – Evil Genius grapefruit seltzer is light, refreshing, and packs that beautiful grapefruit flavor without the acidity.

Lemon & Lime #bigmood – Two great flavors that taste great together! Not many seltzers combine two flavors, and Evil Genius believes their Lemon and Lime really hits the nail on the head in terms of drinkability and refreshment.

Black Cherry #bestlife – One of the more popular hard seltzer flavors from EG’s research, and a favorite among their own staff. Evil Genius wanted to put their own spin on this flavor and make it the best one out there. The taste speaks for itself.

Adult beverages are always more fun with friends – and the starting multi-pack was designed for adults that like to share. Bring the multi-pack to your next party, gathering, picnic and special event.Development has already begun on new flavors that will see a 2020debut.

For the starting launch, The Lab will start carrying it this week for$19.99. The final roll out will continue through November. Hayward said, “By Monday November 4th we’ll be launching it in all of PA, NJ,DE, CT, MD and RI. MA will launch a little closer to the end of November. You’ll primarily find it in your local liquor store or beer distributor, as well as Wegmans, Total Wine and More, Weis Market, and Giant.”

For any direct inquiries about carrying the hard seltzer, emailseltzer@evilgeniusbeer.com. For consumers that want to request Evi lGenius Hard Seltzer in their favorite restaurants and bar, feel free to suggest the new line to its management.

Hayward concluded by saying, “Not all seltzer drinkers are beer drinkers. This is a great opportunity to introduce our name and products to people not familiar with Evil Genius.”

Next up, after the full roll-out of the hard seltzer, Evil Genius looks to continue to do what they have always done – and put very silly names on very serious drinks. Hayward said, “We’ll have a bunch of new beers we’ll be making next year for the first time, as well as producing bigger and better events at our home location The Lab – in Fishtown in Philadelphia.”

Sixpoint Brewery Announces Final Courtyard Can Releases

October 26, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — This is it, folks. Twenty-six can releases. At least sixty-five new beers. This month will be our last courtyard event (we’re taking a radical sabbatical before opening the taproom in May!) and we’re making it a doozy. Raspy went ballistic. Master Blend got double oaked. And for our final offering we’re honoring a great friend of the brewery with a Double IPA he would have loved. See you there… and then see you at the taproom next year!

Save the dates! Release party for local pick-up is Saturday October 26 from 11-5 p.m, and we’re offering an alternate pickup day (without the celebration) on Wednesday October 30 from 5-7 p.m.

Mega Raspy
8.4% ABV

Sour Beer with Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Milk Sugar, and Vanilla

114 lbs of fruit per bbl.

The logical conclusion of all of this. The ultimate Raspy. Lil Raspy, a 4% sour beer with raspberries, was part of our first can release back in September 2017. Since then we’ve released Blackberry Raspy (Raspberries and Blackberries) Smooth Raspy (with Vanilla and Milk Sugar) and Wild Raspy (Barrel-Aged and Funky). For our final release we created our most amped up Raspy ever—we took an insane berry medley, amped up the fruit factor as far as it could go, and took the ABV all the way to 10%. Behold the Mega Raspy! The end point… for now.

The Mayor
8.5% ABV

6 lbs/bbl Dry-Hopping

New England IIPA w/ Idaho 7, Galaxy, Mandarina, Simcoe, and Centennial

Mark Spiegel was one of the most important Sixpoint fans ever. He was a mainstay at every can release and was soon dubbed “The Mayor of Sixpoint” by the crew that showed up to nearly every one of the events. Some of these guys haven’t missed a single release! By the time the crew would form, Mark would always be there holding court and talking shop, so it was a nickname well deserved. Sadly, we lost Mark last year. It was important to our whole team to honor him with the kind of IPA he would have loved, served in one of his favorite places. We designed this beer to incorporate all the characteristics Mark loved in beer—it’s loaded with hops, with a balanced profile between juiciness and piney resinous notes, and we designed it in tandem with the crew he met at the events.

Note: Mark’s family will be in attendance, please say hello as we celebrate our friend.

Double Oaked Master Blend: Jameson Edition
14.5% ABV

Imperial Stout aged in Irish Whisky Barrels

Two year double-aged stout brewed in Collaboration with Jameson as part of the Caskmates program. The finest, darkest stout, aged for over two years in barrels, before being emptied directly into a second batch of first fill barrels from Jameson. This immense, rich stout is extremely complex from the time and quality of the aging. Expect high notes of whisky and wood complemented by fudge, caramel, dark fruit, and vanilla—a spotlight on barrel aging without sacrificing a harmonious experience.
