Workhorse Brewing Company Launches Portable Beer Flight

April 30, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa – Workhorse Brewing Company is thrilled to announce the release of Flights To Go, craft beer’s first portable beer flight. Each “Flight” is comprised of six 8 oz. cans featuring three ales and three lagers, handcrafted by Workhorse’s award-winning brewmaster Nate Olewine. The variety packs will be available for purchase at Workhorse’s 70,000 square foot production facility and Taproom in King of Prussia, as well as select bars, restaurants, bottle shops and distributors throughout greater Philadelphia.

In a market with a myriad of options for the beer drinker, our goal from day one has been to create an accessible, approachable portfolio of no-nonsense beers,” said Workhorse CEO/co-founder Dan Hershberg. “Rather than seek to differentiate our brand through unique styles and over-the-top can labels, we’ve maintained a focus on consistency of product and highlighting our core beers as dependable, reliable options for the local consumer.”

Featuring six, year-round styles — New England IPA, West Coast IPA, Pale Ale, Helles, Vienna Lager and Pilsner — Flights To Go showcases a broad array of hop-forward ales and clean, crisp lagers designed to appeal to a wide variety of craft fans. The smaller, 8 oz. can provides tasting size portions for those either unfamiliar with the brand, allowing them to sample and choose their favorite, or those interested in consuming a few different flavors without having to drink substantial quantities in one sitting. The variety pack is perfect for parties, and the portable nature of the cans means that they’re ideal for the golf course, picnics or the beach.

To help celebrate this exciting release, Workhorse has created a two-week “Launch Plan” featuring nearly a dozen events both at the Taproom and with local partners. Highlights include “Flights and Flights,” an indoor skydiving and beer sampling at iFly King of Prussia, a small plates beer dinner with True Food Kitchen and an Easter candy pairing at the brewery. For more details on the full schedule of events or to learn more about Flights To Go, please visit our website at www.workhorsebrewing.com.

Tennessee Brew Works and Killarney Brewery Company Collaborate on 2 Beers

April 30, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Brew Works and Killarney Brewery Company, an independent Irish Craft brewery located in Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland, announced today a partnership to create two craft beers, one in Nashville, the other in Killarney, Ireland.

Brewers from Killarney Brewery are in Nashville this week working with Tennessee Brew Works’ brewers on their new collaboration beer, “The Foggy Dew,” named after an Irish folk song while giving a nod to the hazy style of the beer.

The light bodied, single batch hazy summertime IPA is at 5% ABV, ripe with hop dankness and notes of citrus and tropical fruit. This brew also showcases a brilliant base stout malt from Ireland-based Loughran Family Malt and hops from Crosby Hops, Oregon; both wonderfully suited for brewing American IPA.

The beer is expected to be available at Tennessee Brew Works’ Taproom in the next two weeks. Likewise, Tennessee Brew Works’ Head Brewer, Matt Simpson, will travel to Killarney Ireland in late July to celebrate their barley harvest and create another grain-to-glass craft beer for Irish drinkers’ enjoyment.

“Our organizations are like-minded in our pursuits of supporting local agriculture and brewing with natural ingredients. We also find that these collaborations are essential to the growth of creativity and knowledge in the global craft beer industry,” says Christian Spears, CEO, Tennessee Brew Works. “We appreciate learning from each other as our brew teams create great beers to enjoy here and across the pond.”

About Killarney Brewery
The founding partners of Killarney Brewing Company have restored the old Killarney Mineral Water drinks facility to its former glory; it is now one of Ireland’s most exciting new independent craft breweries and tap rooms. The unique layout and design oozes warmth with a meshing of old world charm and new world ambience: we pay homage to “old school” Killarney yet in a sleek, industrial setting. The brewery specializes in the production of Ireland’s finest range of craft beers. Additionally all our beers are named after local myths and legends, evoking emotions of all things Killarney.

About Tennessee Brew Works
Tennessee Brew Works was founded with a mission to create high quality craft beer that pays homage to the land, traditions and culture of Tennessee. They brew beers using only natural ingredients and source them from local farms whenever possible. Tennessee Brew Works is one-hundred percent owned and operated by folks in Tennessee. They are guided by their motto: “We work hard to create high quality craft beer that makes Tennessee proud. Our culture places importance on family, friends, and community, and we hope you’ll be a part of it.”

White Labs Adds Kveik Strain to Vault Offerings

April 29, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

SAN DIEGO — Global liquid yeast and fermentation company, White Labs, is launching a new kveik strain—WLP518 Opshaug Farmhouse Yeast—that was isolated from a farm in western Norway. It is a neutral, hop-forward strain making it an ideal choice for cleaner beer styles that you can ferment at higher temperatures.

“Kveik strains are on the rise, but we didn’t want to add just any strain to our lineup,” said Chris White, founder, CEO and president of White Labs. “We’ve spent a lot of time studying different kveik strains and found that this is one of the best.”

The company worked with Lars Marius Garshol to source the culture kveik-style yeast from farmhouse brewer Harald Opshaug in Stranda, Norway. Opshaug used the strain for years, brewing kornøl-style raw ales with juniper branches and kveik like other brewers in the area until he was exposed to modern brewing theory, which teaches that this method of brewing is wrong. In an effort to stay current, Opshaug switched from the kveik to a commercially available strain, but he couldn’t bring himself to get rid of the kveik, which he calls “the good sort,” so he made it a point to keep it alive throughout the years.

Kveiks are known for their high-temperature tolerance and WLP518 Opshaug Farmhouse Yeast is no exception. Opshaug often pitched the yeast at 73-75°F (23-24°C), but the strain has handled up to 91°F (33°C). He would harvest yeast from the top after 30 hours, and the beer would be finished after 48-50 hours.

WLP518 Opshaug Farmhouse Yeast is being released through the White Labs Vault, making it available for professionals to order year-round. Homebrewers can pre-order it through The Vault for Homebrewers.

QUICK FACTS

  • Style Recommendation: IPA, pale ale
  • Alcohol Tolerance: Medium to High (8-12%)
  • Attenuation: 70-80%
  • Flocculation: Medium to High
  • Optimum Fermentation Temperature: 77-86℉ (25-30℃)

Strain description: Sourced from our friend Lars Marius Garshol, this kveik strain was isolated from a mixed culture which belonged to Harald Opshaug, a farmhouse brewer in Stranda, Norway. This strain was originally used in the 1990s to produce several kornøl-style beers. It is a clean fermenting yeast and has tolerated temperatures up to 91°F (33°C) while finishing fermentation within three to four days. The hop-forward, clean characteristics of this strain make it ideal for IPAs and pale ales.

Avery Brewing Announces Pacer IPA

April 29, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

BOULDER, Colo. – Avery Brewing Company, a pioneering and innovative craft brewery known for its all-encompassing obsession with beer, creates a modern, hop forward, full-flavored Hazy IPA, at only 100 calories and 3 carbs.

Founder and CEO Adam Avery admits, “This is an extremely selfish brewing endeavor. A beer brewed for me – an aging, wannabe-athlete who “drinks” for a living, and desperately needs to start setting a new and healthier pace in life.” Pacer IPA may not just be for him, though, as increasingly health-conscious drinkers look for lower calorie and lower carb options, driving the burgeoning “better-for-you” category in beer.

Brewing a legitimate, flavorful Hazy IPA clocking in at 100 calories, 3 carbs, and 4.5% ABV, that sports a mouthfeel and hop character worthy of today’s craft beer drinker, was no easy task. True to the company’s Beer First mentality, the brewers were ready for the challenge, focusing on ingredients that would ensure high returns on the full sensory experience. In addition to traditional malted barley, they incorporated wheat and oats for fuller body, as well as an abundance of southern hemisphere hops, and contemporary dry-hopping techniques to achieve big, juicy, fruity aromas and flavors.

Despite his self-deprecating manner, Avery is actually a long time and devout rock climber and cyclist, embodying the mountain lifestyle of the brewery’s home state of Colorado. Going big on flavor has always been just as important to him. “After 26 years of exploring and creating beers, I realized I also wanted a real IPA with fewer consequences.” Avery added, “Pacer isn’t about making something I can have a lot of. It’s about making something I want to have a lot of. Especially without getting in the way of my extremely insignificant athletic goals, or the trauma of stepping onto the scale!”

About Avery Brewing Company
A Colorado-based brewery for over 25 years, Avery Brewing has a singular focus on creating the perfect beer. In a world full of discord, their belief is that a singular dedication to something as seemingly simple and inconsequential as beer can transform the world. Avery Brewing exists to pursue the mastery of beer and to reveal its power. Standouts include White Rascal Belgian-Style White Ale, a remarkable selection of IPAs including Maharaja Imperial IPA, and Barrel-Aged 16ers like Vanilla Bean Stout. Discover what great beer can do to your world.

Boulder Beer Company to Release Perilous Prickly Pear Wheat

April 27, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

Boulder, Colorado – Boulder Beer Company, Colorado’s First Craft Brewery, is excited to announce the upcoming release of a new beer – Perilous Prickly Pear Wheat – available mid-May in six-pack cans and draft.

Perilous is a dangerously playful American wheat beer infused with the juice of the prickly pear cactus, imparting a light tart flavor and an uplifting finish. Light bodied and effervescent with a rosy hue, Perilous will start your mouth watering at first glance. 5.1% ABV, 12 IBU.

The colorful can illustration, created by Moxie Sozo in Boulder, CO, depicts a southwest scene of a cluster of prickly pear cacti in bloom, nestled in the midst of several sharp, spikey creatures. A desert wasp, a scorpion, a lizard, and even a cleverly hidden boot spur all pose a perilous situation and threaten the airy balloons floating overhead. The can design fits within Boulder Beer’s refreshed branding they launched last summer with new packaging designs for all of their beers and company logo.

Perilous rolls out on May 10th with a release party at The Pub at Boulder Beer Company on Wilderness Place in Boulder. Between 5-5:30pm all Pub guests age 21+ will receive a free pint of Perilous to celebrate its release, then can stick around for games, prizes, food and fun.

Available in 12-ounce six-pack cans and draft, Perilous will be available to all markets where Boulder Beer is distributed. To search for Perilous, go to https://boulderbeer.com/beer-finder, type in your zip code, and search for accounts that carry this tasty new brew near you.

About Boulder Beer Company
Founded in 1979, Boulder Beer Company has been a pioneer in the craft brewing industry for 40 years. Their passion for innovation keeps their brand mix diverse, offering a taste for every palate. They currently package seven year-round beers along with numerous limited releases offered throughout the year.

Point Brewery Celebrates Point Special Lager

April 25, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

STEVENS POINT, Wisconsin – The Stevens Point Brewery is proud to announce ‘Point Special Day,’ a new can design, improved quality, and the return of summer sweepstakes!

Mayor Proclaims ‘Point Special Day’
Everyone is invited to celebrate the inaugural “Point Special Day,” Thursday, April 25th. The Stevens Point Brewery has chosen this day to commemorate its flagship beer, Point Special Lager. In honor of “Point Special Day,” patrons of local retailers can enjoy 12-ounce cans of Point Special Lager for only $1 starting at 4:00 PM while supplies last.

According to Julie Birrenkott, Point Brewery’s Director of Marketing, “This is a day to celebrate Point Special Lager, a beer that has been an important part of the history of the Stevens Point Area for more than 100 years. We were proud to receive a proclamation from the Mayor of Stevens Point, Mike Wiza, commemorating April 25th as ‘Point Special Day.’ We are also excited to meet and ‘toast’ Point Special with fans on Thursday!” See proclamation here.

New Can Designed by UWSP Graduate
Cans of Point Special Lager will also sport a new look. Designed by recent UW-Stevens Point Graphic Design graduate Jeffrey Kollock, the new graphics deliver a bold, crafty look.

According to Kollock, “What attracted me to Point Special wasn’t just that it was a hometown brew, it was the rich culture and community that supports the beer. Knowing that everyone, no matter the generation, has a sense of pride enjoying a Point Special Lager because it reflects their hometown.”

This limited-release 12-ounce can marks a fresh creative direction for Point Special Lager and will be available throughout the summer. The vibrant hand-drawn design plays into this beer’s handcrafted quality, while still maintaining its historical brand identity. According to Birrenkott, “We’re confident our new look will appeal to dedicated fans of Point Special Lager and new customers alike.”

Brewmaster Goes Back to Basics – “Same Recipe, Better Execution”
Point Special Lager is back in a new, old way – and it’s here to stay, according to Brewmaster Mike Schraufnagel. He indicates specific ingredients have come and gone since the repeal of Prohibition, but the ratio of hops, grains, and yeast has remained the same.

“We still use the same recipe we developed during the craft beer boom, when we replaced corn adjuncts with all-brewers malt. In fall 2018, though, we refined our brewing methods, operating procedures, and lab testing to move Point Special closer to the original flavor. We think it’s clearer, crisper, and 100% balanced,” Schraufnagel said.

Point ‘See Red’ Sweepstakes
Along with the new limited-release can and “Point Special Day,” the Stevens Point Brewery team is excited to announce the return of the popular “See Red” Sweepstakes.” In specially-marked 12- and 24-pack can packages, consumers will have chances to win prizes by discovering winning Red Cans.

This year, the company plans to give away more than 550 prizes, including Point Paddle Boards, Apple® Airpods, Facebook® Portals, Pointoberfest tickets, t-shirts, and more. The promotional program is set to start in late April and will continue through the fall. More information is available at www.pointbeer.com/red.

Point Special Lager History
The name “Special Lager” dates back to 1890, when the Lutz family owned the Stevens Point Brewery. It was originally called “Lutz Special Beer.” During Prohibition, the brewery produced a near-beer called “Point Special Beverage.” This was replaced by full-strength “Point Special Beer” after the repeal of Prohibition in 1933.
