Elevation Beer Co. Releases Apis IV Quad Aged in Red Wine Barrels

February 28, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

PONCHA SPRINGS, Colo. — After patiently resting in red wine barrels for four months, one of Elevation Beer Company’s oldest recipes— the Apis IV Quad— hits the Colorado and Wyoming marketplaces in 750mL bombers as an exciting variant on their classic Quadruple.

Apis IV is a Dark Belgian-Style Ale brewed in the Trappist tradition. With a touch of locally sourced honey from Beekeepers Honey Boutique in Salida, Colorado the name Apis is a nod to the hardworking genus of the honeybee. Boasting notes of plum, fig and molasses, Apis IV has a medium to heavy mouthfeel and finishes with subtle floral hops.

This year’s special barrel-aged Apis IV release was aged for four months in David Arthur Meritaggio blend barrels imparting a brilliant deep ruby color with a tan head and aroma notes of port wine, golden raisin, fig and honey.

Red Wine Barrel-Aged Apis IV is available on Colorado and Wyoming shelves in limited quantities while supplies last. Get it on draft while you can at Elevation’s tasting room in Poncha Springs.

About Elevation Beer Co.

Independence Brewing Co. Announces Re-Release of Seasonal Lager

February 28, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

AUSTIN, Texas — As the song says, “spread the word throughout the land,” because Independence Brewing Co. has announced the re-release of the brand’s first canned lager, dubbed Cowboys from Helles in honor of the first studio album and song of the same name, Cowboys From Hell, by legendary Texas metal band Pantera. Cowboys from Helles was first revealed to the public at the brewery’s Rodeo Release Party last year and has since become a seasonal staple for cowboys, hellraisers and everyone in-between.

“Ain’t talking no tall tales friend,” Cowboys from Helles is a bright, crisp and refreshing Munich-style Helles brewed traditionally using only two varieties of German hops, yeast and malt. The German word “helles” can be translated as “bright,” “light” or “pale” — “so out of the darkness and into the light” comes Cowboys from Helles. Paired best alongside bratwurst, shellfish, Texas BBQ and pork chops, Cowboys from Helles is slightly less bitter than a Pilsner and is highly sessionable for easier enjoyment during the warmer spring weather. The seasonal brew is available until May at the taproom and at local retailers throughout Texas.

About Independence Brewing Co.
Independence Brewing Co. is a local craft beer brewery and taproom located in Southeast Austin, Texas. Founded by Amy & Rob Cartwright in 2004, Independence Brewing Co. has grown from a small mom, pop and dog operation to a team of 40 people producing more than 20,000 barrels each year with distribution throughout Texas and Arkansas. Independence Brewing Co. is now one of the largest and most beloved breweries in Central Texas. Independence’s core lineup includes Austin Amber, Liberty Lunch IPA, Redbud Berliner Weisse, Power & Light Pale Ale and the brand’s top-selling beer, Stash IPA. These beers and several seasonal/limited releases can be enjoyed in a laid-back, industrial-style tasting room with views of the beer-making process set to live music from local musicians. Birds Barbershop offers beers exclusively from Independence Brewing Co. in all nine of their locations across Texas. The business is a proud and active member of the communities of Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and El Paso. The brewery and its taproom are open to the public for tours in Austin, Texas. Bone Up Brewing Company Completes Taproom and Brewery Expansion

February 28, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

EVERETT, Mass. — Bone Up Brewing Company has good news to share: as of right now, our expansion is finally complete. This means three things:

More Taproom Space
We are doubling the size of our taproom, doubling our capacity (from 49 to 98) and more than doubling the number of seats (from 30 to 75, plus another 24 or so when the patio is open).

More Production Capacity
This has been a work in progress since we started the expansion a year ago, but we have more tanks and more barrels, which means more beers (and a burgeoning funk program that will debut later this year).

More Fun Stuff
With the added taproom space, we now have the room to host private events and we have been brainstorming a whole bunch of cool things we can do in there (more trivia, movie nights, beer dinners, workshops, etc.), so keep your eyes peeled!

We will be officially kicking things off next weekend with a party to break in the new space. In honor of the fun times we have had with our local government getting things ship-shape, we are calling it Kafka Day. And since it is Kafka Day, it is actually going be two days. Starting on Friday, March 1 (precisely one year after our lease on the new space started) and going through Saturday, March 2, we will be tapping some barrel aged beers we have been saving for a special occasion: El Pulpo (imperial stout aged in rye barrels), our last ever keg of The Quadless Leg Monster (quad aged in apple brandy barrels), Melvin the Mammoth (barleywine) and an extra special surprise release. In addition to our daily bar snack menu, on Saturday Teri-Yummy will be providing food from 3 p.m.-7 p.m.,  and there will be cake from Sweetteeth Bakery available starting at 4 p.m.

About Bone Up Brewing
Born from an obsessive homebrewing passion and built by hand, Bone Up is a small, taproom focused brewery run by husband and wife brewing duo Jared and Liz Kiraly. Inspired by old-school Belgian farmhouse brewery while celebrating American styles and local ingredients, their beers combine the heart and soul from each of these beloved beer cultures. Over the last two and half years, Bone Up has grown to support a bustling taproom and some local draft distribution, but the goal has always been to provide a relaxing and eccentric space for locals to enjoy beers that are drinkable, unique and disappear from your glass without you even realizing it. Beer is meant to be fun – share it.

Dogfish Head and Grateful Dead Collaborate on American Beauty Pale Ale

February 27, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

MILTON, Del. – As the official brewery of Record Store Day, Dogfish Head is bringing together independent beer and independent record stores through its reignited collaboration with longtime friends the Grateful Dead and the return of its fan-favorite pale ale American Beauty. Dogfish Headand the Grateful Dead are also turning up the volume with the creation ofSage and Spirit, a limited edition, 10-track vinyl album that will release on Record Store Day (Saturday, April 13).

“The enjoyment of a beautiful beer alongside an amazing album is an exponentially awesome experience, and we atDogfish, take every opportunity we can get to weave together the art of brewing and our love of music,” said Sam Calagione, CEO and founder of Dogfish Head. “We’ve always been inspired by the Grateful Dead’s creativity, collaborative nature and most of all music, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them again for the re-release ofAmerican Beauty and our Record Store Day release.”

Brewed to 6.5 percent ABV to commemorate the year theGrateful Dead was formed (1965), American Beauty is an all-American pale ale infused with granola and succulent wildflower honey. First concocted in 2012, American Beauty is now available year round in a 6 pack/12 oz. bottles with red, white and blue packaging featuring the band’s iconic ‘dancing bears.’  Fans of the design can check out theAmerican Beauty-themed Dogfish Head x Crosley record player, available for sale on the brewery’s website, the perfect turntable to use when dropping the needle on a copy of Sage and Spirit.

Sage and Spirit features a hand-picked collection of Grateful Dead melodies, curated by the band’s audiovisual archivist and legacy manager, David Lemieux. After combing through the band’s expansive discography, Lemieux selected the following tracks to appear on this collaborative Record Store Dayrelease: “Sugar Magnolia,” “Eyes Of The World,” “Lost Sailor,” “Saint Of Circumstance,” “High Time,” “Unbroken Chain,” “If I Had The World To Give” and “Sage and Spirit.” Also featured on the album are recordings of “Jack Straw” and “Brown-Eyed Women”from the band’s European tour in 1972. The perfect accompaniment to a pint ofAmerican Beauty, copies of Sage and Spirit will be sold, starting on Record Store Day, April 13, at independent record stores around the country.

“Choosing the songs for ‘Sage and Spirit’ really didn’t take long, but that’s not to say I didn’t put a lot of work into it. My directive was, ‘You’re sitting on the porch. It’s a summer day. You’re drinking aDogfish Head American Beauty and listening to the Dead,’ and immediately I thought, ‘I got it,’” said Lemieux. “I was so inspired by that directive that the record turned out to be just that; the soundtrack to a summer day – or really any day. It’s mellow and meditative, and every song is a truly beautiful track.”

As self-proclaimed beer geeks with a music problem,Dogfish Head is also bringing back Dragons & YumYums, the brewery’s collaboration with The Flaming Lips. Shipping nationwide just in time for Record Store Day, this intensely tropical yet subtly bitter pale ale is brewed with a combination of dragon fruit, yumberry, passion fruit, pear juice and black carrot juice for an explosion of fruit in every sip. Part of the Off-Centered Art Series, Dragons & YumYums (6.5 percent ABV) is making its comeback in 6-pack/12 oz. bottles with a playful and vibrant new look from artist Michael Hacker.

But, that is not all! Available year round in 6-pack/12 oz. bottles, Wood-Aged Bitches Brew is yet another of Dogfish Head’s melodic music collaborations to indulge in this Record Store Day. Originally brewed to honor the 40th anniversary of Miles Davis’ legendary 1970 jazz fusion record, Bitches Brew is a blend of three threads of an imperial stout and one thread of Tej, a native African honey beer.Wood-Aged Bitches Brew is the same bold, dark beer folks know and love, but this time it has been aged in American oak and Palo Santo wood tanks. A 9 percent ABV brew chock full of roasty aromas of vanilla, licorice and chocolate, this succulent sipper is best enjoyed alongside some classic jazz fusion tunes.

About Grateful Dead
Grateful Dead is a social and musical phenomenon that grew into a genuine American treasure. In 1965, an entire generation was linked together by common ideals, gathering by the hundreds and thousands. This movement created a seamless connection between the band and its fans. As the band toured, Dead Heads would follow. Not because it was a part of popular culture, but because it is a true counterculture that exists to this very day-one that earnestly believes in the value of its beliefs. By 1995, Grateful Dead had attracted the most concert goers in the history of the music business, and today remain one of the all-time leaders in concert ticket sales. Eventually, the caravan evolved into a community with various artists, craftsmen and entrepreneurs supplying a growing demand for merchandise that connected them to the music. Today, the connection is as strong as ever. The band was inducted in to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Their final tally of 2,318 total concerts remains a world record.

Sactown Union Rebrands as Tower Brewing, Revives Monkey Knife Fight Pale Ale

February 26, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Tower Brewing, rebranding itself from its previous Sactown Union name, is proudly celebrating the revival of Sacramento’s legendary pale ale, Monkey Knife Fight.

Available on Feb. 26, 2019 in the brewery’s East Sacramento taproom and rolling out to retail partners starting March 4, Monkey Knife Fight will also be an offering at the annual Capitol Beer Fest on March 2 – look for the longest line!

Monkey Knife Fight’s revival has been planned almost from the day its traditional home, the fabled Rubicon Brewery, closed its doors in August 2017. Along with beer lovers across the region, Tower Brewing’s current owners, Ken Reiff and Jeff Howes, were heartbroken at the finish of a local institution, a significant stop at any local pub crawl.

As Howes put it, “When I heard the Rubicon was closing, along with many other Sacramento residents I shed a tear. And when the opportunity came to acquire the original recipes for Rubicon’s full array of outstanding craft beers, including Monkey Knife Fight, we jumped at the chance to keep the legend alive and ensure that these magnificent offerings – favorites of so many beer lovers near and far – would live on and ‘not go softly into that good night.’”

In addition to its sensational original craft beers, including El Denali Hazy IPA, Wading Season Imperial Stout and Original Grainster Pale Ale, Tower Brewery will be rolling out additional Rubicon legacy beers in the months ahead.

Tower Brewing is dedicated to providing an alluring variety of unique and exceptional beers, feeding the passion of those who love beer and inspiring the palate of even the pickiest drinkers. The reprisal of Monkey Knife Fight signals an homage to the pioneer of Sacramento’s craft beer scene and a portent of exciting new offerings.

About Tower Brewing
Tower Brewing, located in East Sacramento, produces an array of beers to impress all palates. Knowing that the best beer comes from the finest, freshest ingredients, the brewery’s quality begins there, coupled with skill and dedication to produce a diverse, delicious selection that appeals to varying tastes and preferences. There is always a balance of classic and innovation on tap at its welcoming tap room.

Odell Brewing Releases Mountain Standard IPA

February 26, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Odell Brewing is adding a new brand to their year-round line up, Mountain Standard IPA. At 6.5%, this Mountain Style IPA is brewed with innovative American hop varieties like Cashmere, Sabro, and Strata which bring tropical hop aromas of pineapple, orange, and mango.

To accentuate juicy hop aromas without using adjuncts or fruit, Mountain Standard IPA is triple dry-hopped. The result is an extremely drinkable IPA bursting with bright hop flavors, low bitterness, and a slight haze.

“There are West Coast IPAs and New England IPAs, but this is our take on the Mountain Style IPA,”explains C.O.O., Brendan McGivney. “We learned a lot with recent releases like Drumroll, New Dawn, Cloud Catcher, and pilot brews at our new RiNo Brewhouse. They all had a role in shaping this new beer.”

Odell Brewing released their first IPA in 2007, which won Gold at GABF and World Beer Cup. Since its release, Odell IPA has remained the #1 selling IPA in Colorado.

“Odell IPA will always be one of our greatest achievements, but over the last 12 years we‘ve continued experimenting with new hops and techniques,” explains McGivney. “American IPA’s will always be a category of innovation, and we’re finally ready to share our take on the future of this style in the Rockies.”

Some loyal Odell fans may recognize the Mountain Standard name, as it previously belonged to a seasonal Black IPA available October through December.

“We made the decision to retire the Black IPA at the end of last year. As the initial pilot batches of our new Mountain Style IPA started to take shape, we realized it’d be a mistake to call it anything other than Mountain Standard.” explains Alex Kayne, Director of Marketing. “When you look back at the hop-forward beers we’ve released over the last few years, there’s consistency in those brands. Mountain Standard is the result of those experiments. It’s all about setting a new standard for ourselves and our fans.”

Mountain Standard IPA will be priced inline with core brands and available on draft and in 6-pack cans. The beer will be available beginning February 25th across Odell’s 19 state footprint. For more info please visit www.odellbrewing.com.
