DuClaw and Craft x EDU Launch ‘Hopportunity Awaits’ Hazy IPA and Scholarship Grant

October 31, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

DuClawBaltimore, Maryland – With more than 8.8K craft breweries operating in the U.S., the industry is bustling with job opportunities. But between a well-documented lack of diversity, and low awareness of the variety of roles available, DuClaw Brewing Company recognized that craft beer is not always seen as an accessible career choice.

Hoping to shift this narrative, highlight positive stories, and show clear opportunities across every role, the team is using its latest hazy IPA, Hopportunity Awaits, to feature 10 unique stories from industry professionals with various skill sets spanning chemistry, biology, illustration, journalism, and more, who took nontraditional pathways into craft beer.

DuClaw has been working alongside Craft x EDU for guidance on its approach to this project, and their decision to commit a portion of proceeds to create an educational grant through the nonprofit organization that champions inclusion, equity and justice within the craft brewing community. This grant will benefit scholarships for talent looking to break into craft beer, or emerging industry professionals looking to expand their knowledge.

“We are delighted that DuClaw is joining the ranks of opportunity-makers in the craft brewing community,” says J Jackson-Beckham, Craft x EDU founder and executive director.

“The craft brewing community, unlike many other industries, doesn’t have clearly defined pathways to entry and advancement. Those paths are often unique and unexpected. Our goal is to identify and enable paths that have been blazed by individuals like those being highlighted in this project, and to create new pathways that lead to more inclusive and equitable industry,” continued Jackson-Beckham.

The label art on each can displays one of 10 brief personal stories, and QR code that directs to the Hopportunity Awaits blog site, which dives into the longer version of each individual’s career story, revealing challenges and breakthroughs. The interviews also provide “Tap Takeaways” callouts, which offer key resources for those looking to join the industry and create more equitable spaces.

“Having been in this industry for a few years, it’s been a joy to see this project come to life, knowing each story may inspire someone to see craft beer as more than a drink,” said Rachel Bradley, Marketing Manager for DuClaw Brewing. “On a personal note, I’ve been grateful to apply my marketing and creative background to elevate craft beer, which has become a powerful way to connect with communities. We are so thankful for our participants, who were eager to share their stories, share critical issues, and remind us why this industry can be so impactful.”

Hopportunity Awaits is a light-to-medium bodied IPA, featuring juicy hop qualities with notes of pineapple, lemony citrus, tropical fruit, and pine. The brew offers a 7.6% ABV and is now available in 16oz cans and on draft at select locations throughout DuClaw’s footprint of 24 states and DC.

For a preview of each Hopportunity Awaits interview, explore below, and in the blog.

Kenny Gould, notable writer and founder of Hop Culture Magazine.

Ryan Cervantes, a skilled packaging manager on the Oregon coast. His motto? Never lose faith in the hustle.

Urban South – HTX Launches New Halloween-Inspired Mixed Pack

October 29, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Urban South BreweryHOUSTON, Texas – Urban South – HTX has teamed up with Kings Brewing Co., Tripping Animals Brewing Co., and Weathered Souls Brewing Co. to release a new “Spooky Spilled Sixer” just in time for Halloween. The Spooky Spilled Sixer is a mixed six-pack featuring three collaborative beers brewed with Halloween candy ingredients. The new limited edition offering is currently available for purchase at Urban South’s Houston taproom, or fans may order their six-pack online for in-person pickup.

“We love to bring a sense of nostalgia to our beers and with this six-pack, we wanted to bring our fans back to all of those fun times trick or treating as kids,” said Dave Ohmer, General Manager at Urban South – HTX. “Working with candy is an interesting process, but in the end is well worth it as the candy is what gives each beer that evocative eroma and extra punch of taste. We loved working with all of the breweries involved and making it happen was such a fun process.”

All three beers in the Spooky Spilled Sixer are part of Urban South’s popular Spilled Series, a line of heavily fruited sour beers brewed using hundreds of pounds of fresh fruit to sweeten the tartness of the underlying sour base. Each brewery chose their favorite Halloween candy to feature as a complementary ingredient to the fresh fruit. The new beers include:

Spilled with Kings Brewing: Blueberry, Blackberry, Marionberry and Wild Berry Skittles®

Spilled with Tripping Animals: Pineapple, White Chocolate and Nerds®

Spilled with Weathered Souls: Strawberry, Raspberry and Starburst®

Urban South – HTX regularly collaborates with craft breweries across the country on new beer releases. Kings Brewing Co. is based in California, Tripping Animals Brewing Co. is based in Florida and Weathered Souls Brewing Co. is a fellow Texas brewery based in San Antonio.

Our Mutual Friend Announces November Beer Releases

October 29, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Our Mutual FriendDENVER, Colorado – Coming off the momentum of earning two medals—a silver medal in the Mixed-Culture Brett Beer category for Biere Ovale and a gold medal for Inner Light in the Australian Pale Ale category—at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival competition, Our Mutual Friend Brewing (OMF) will release four new beers in November. The upcoming lineup of beers include a West Coast-style India Pale Ale that was meticulously crafted, a collaboration with a Denver pizza hot spot and a sessionable Mocha Stout.

“Stacked Universe is a West Coast IPA that we’ve been working on all year trying to find the right hop combination,” says Jan Chodkowski, Head Brewer at OMF. “We’re finally ready to showcase this beer and I can’t wait for folks to try it!”

At 7.5% ABV, Stacked Universe is a West Coast-style IPA brewed with Colorado malts and El Dorado, Mosaic, Citra and Idaho 7 hops to provide an equilibrium of citrus, piney, tropical and dank flavors. Stacked Universe will be available on draft and in four-pack 16-oz cans on Nov. 4 at the taproom.

IPA lovers can also enjoy Hop Excavator, a Juicy IPA brewed with Nelson Sauvin, Azacca, Strata and El Dorado hops. At 8.1% ABV this beer is bursting with so much berry, grape and citrus melon flavor that you would think there was fruit added to the beer. Hop Excavator will be available on draft and in four-pack 16-oz cans on Nov. 4 at the taproom.

At 5% ABV, Modern Meltdown is a chocolate-forward Mocha Stout that is still sessionable. Brewed with Colorado-based malts and then aged with Ghanian cacao nibs from TCHO, this well-balanced stout is packed full of flavor without going overboard. Modern Meltdown will be available on draft and in four-pack 16-oz cans on Nov. 4 at the taproom.

Teaming up with Cart-Driver, OMF created a Saison with ingredients that pair well with the local pizzeria and oyster bar.

“We decided to brew a Saison, a style we all know and love, that would incorporate some of Cart-Driver’s ingredients,” says Chodkowski. “We landed on basil, which paired with Strata hops makes an incredible strawberry basil flavor combination.”

Cart de Saison is a classic Belgian Saison that’s mildly estery with notes of basil and strawberry. This 5.7% ABV draft-only collaboration beer will be available for a dual release at Cart-Driver and OMF on Nov. 12.

About Our Mutual Friend Brewing

Established in 2012, Our Mutual Friend is a relaxed brewery and taproom in Denver, CO whose goal is to create world-class beer using local ingredients whenever possible and serve as a gathering place for the Five Points neighborhood. This small but mighty brewery has earned acclaim and awards with a 2018 gold medal for Saison Trystero at World Beer Cup and six Great American Beer Festival medals, including a silver medal in the Mixed-Culture Brett Beer category for Biere Ovale and a gold medal for Inner Light in the Australian Pale Ale category in 2021.

Two Roads Brewing Partners with UConn Athletics to Launch TwoConn Easy Ale

October 28, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

STRATFORD, Connecticut – With the tipoff of college basketball set to start in early November, Two Roads Brewing Co. is teaming up with UConn Athletics to launch a truly iconic, collaborative beer, TwoConn Easy Ale.

As part of a larger partnership involving advertising and promotions, it made perfect sense for Two Roads to take it to an even higher level and collaborate with UConn Athletics to create a special beer for UConn Nation.  “We are excited to partner with Two Roads in a collaboration of iconic Connecticut brands,” said UConn Director of Athletics David Benedict. “This is going to be a great partnership that we are sure our fans are going to enjoy, both at the games and when they visit the brewery.”

Two Roads’ CEO Brad Hittle couldn’t agree more. Hittle stated, “as someone who grew up as a Connecticut Nutmegger, this partnership is particularly exciting to me and of course to Two Roads.  UConn Athletics and Two Roads are widely recognized brands, in our state and even nationally, that strive for excellence in everything they do plus have a little fun in the process. We can’t wait to show the legions of UConn Husky fans just what’s in “Storrs” for them with this program and this collaborative beer!”

The goal for Two Roads Master Brewer, Phil Markowski, was to create a universally delicious brew for a broad range of fans and customers. According to Markowski, “the beer is golden-ale inspired. It’s crisp and clean with a touch of sweetness and a kiss of hops for balance.  We recognize that not every UConn fan is an IPA fanatic. With TwoConn Easy Ale we have crafted something that is appealing to both craft and non-craft beer drinkers alike. In short, it’s a real crowd pleaser!”

The launch of TwoConn is two phased— kegs of the easy-drinking ale will be available in Connecticut bars, restaurants and UConn athletic venues the first week of November to kick off the start of the Men’s and Women’s basketball seasons.  Then, this coming February, the brewery will add cans to the lineup with 12oz twelve-packs and also 16oz four-packs. Since Husky fans can be found everywhere, these packs will eventually be available throughout New England in liquor and grocery stores.

According to Two Roads Director of Marketing, Collin Kennedy, Two Roads is really excited to bring this beer to the fan base in unique and fun ways.   “We know there are Husky fans throughout the whole state, and we’ll be working closely with the folks on the UConn Athletic   s team to plan Husky watch parties, alumni gatherings, consumer giveaways and much more. We want to see fans all over the state cheering on the Huskies with a TwoConn Easy Ale in hand!”

To find out more about TwoConn Easy Ale or to find it on draft near you visit the Two Roads website.

Two Roads products are proudly distributed by Star Distributors and F&F Distributors.

Three Taverns Brewery and Mastodon Collaborate on New Beer

October 27, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Three Taverns BreweryDECATUR, Georgia – Award winning Three Taverns Brewery has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning metal rock band, Mastodon, to produce a new beer and continue their approach to collaborations outside the traditional brewery-with-a-brewery collaboration model.

The limited-edition beer, Teardrinker, is a 6.2% New England-style double dry-hopped IPA. “The opportunity to collaborate on Teardrinker was something we couldn’t pass up. We wanted to design a beer that matched the methodical intensity of Mastodon’s music, while remaining approachable and easy drinking.” – Neal Engleman | Head Brewer, Three Taverns

Three Taverns relationship with Mastodon started years ago when drummer/singer, Brann Dailor – an avid craft beer drinker – was a patron of the brewery. Multiple conversations over beers, ranging from crazy tour stories to beer nerd topics like “hop bite”, lead to the idea of creating a beer together. Named after the single off Mastodon’s latest release, Hushed and Grim, the beer instantly had the most badass sounding beer name (ever?): Teardrinker.

“Atlanta has a really incredible beer scene that I feel is just as thriving as its music scene. Being a beer lover myself, I really wanted to bring in some local breweries to represent some of the songs on our new album. Three Taverns is one of the best places to go and have a drink in Atlanta and they are absolutely crushing one of my favorite styles – DDH New England style IPA’s. When I’m coming up with titles for our songs I try to imagine ordering it at a bar, and I absolutely love the name “Teardrinker” for a beer. Three Taverns has some of the best and most innovative beers around so we couldn’t be more stoked to team up with them for “Teardrinker”. Hopefully it sounds as good as it tastes. – Brann Dailor | Mastodon

The mesmerizing label design for Teardrinker is from Portland, Oregon, based acclaimed artist Alexander Reisfar, whom Mastodon selected to create a visual representation of the song. Reisfar’s art has graced the cover of numerous metal albums and his paintings have been featured in galleries all across the country. Reisfar’s creative process starts with hand painting the entire artwork – an approach truly unique and one-of-a-kind for a beer can design.

Teardrinker will be Three Taverns second beer collaboration with a band, after the Grouplove collab, This Is Beer. In addition to collaborating with bands, the brewery has also created beers with local farms, non-profits, and even customers.

“Music has been woven into the fabric of our brewery since its earliest inception. It provided a soulful backdrop to my formative years of homebrewing and continues to be a critical ingredient in our beer today. Music floods the brewery production floor daily giving energy and inspiration to the hardworking crew who make our beer. Miles Davis once said that ‘to be and stay a great musician, you’ve got to always be open to what’s new, to what’s happening at the moment.’ This philosophy of innovation and discovery is foundational at Three Taverns. Our latest discovery is Teardrinker.” – Brian Purcell | Founder and CEO, Three Taverns.

Teardrinker will be released in 4-pack, 16oz cans at both Three Taverns Brewery locations on Friday, October 29th, with a special album listening party with the band the evening of the 29th at Three Taverns Imaginarium location. Teardrinker releases into market the following week all over the state of Georgia and in Chattanooga, TN.

They delivered three consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 with The Hunter [2011], Once More ‘Round the Sun [2014], and Emperor of Sand [2017]. “Sultan’s Curse” notably garnered their first GRAMMY® Award in the category of Best Metal Performance. Ohio’s Cartridge Brewing Celebrates One Year

October 27, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Cartridge BrewingMAINEVILLE, Ohio – For Cartridge Brewing, the number to note is 52. That covers not only the weeks over the first year of business, but also the variety of beers brewed since last fall’s grand opening. Halloween weekend of 2020 saw the doors open with 5 distinct beers on tap – now, there are regularly up to 20 varieties on draft at any given time. It should come as no surprise that one year later, the brewpub’s 1-year anniversary celebration is going to be all about the beer.

“We’ve built an outstanding brewing team – that’s what I’m most proud of,” says Adam Mills, head brewer, of the past year. “Sure, we’ve already won some awards along the way, but for me, it’s all about the people who have come so far, learned so much, and brought such great talent and heart to making great beer.”

The grand festivities kick off Friday, October 29th, starting with an afternoon tapping of two brand-new beers, brewed specifically for the anniversary weekend: Honoring the Past (Cream Ale) and Brewing the Future (Fruited Double IPA).

“These two are great foils for each other,” Adam explains. “Honoring the Past … that beer has roots here – cream ale is a real historic style for this area, the quintessential Genesee. Brewing the Future is the opposite end of the spectrum – an assertive fruit-forward beer with real fruit and complementary hops.”

Saturday, October 30th will see the return of the “original five” – with a twist. Timed tappings will occur throughout the day, starring each of Cartridge’s 5 grand opening beers along with a limited-release, small-batch anniversary variant of each.

The day will also feature the release of a special mixed four-pack that includes 2 cans of Honoring the Past Cream Ale and 2 cans of Brewing the Future Fruited Double IPA, along with a limited-edition commemorative poster – while quantities last.

There’s even brand-new beer-inspired merch being revealed only in the brewpub this week (think that signature Cartucho sugar skull now emblazoned on a tee).

“It’s been a wild ride, to say the least,” says Kyle Hackbarth, COO and co-founder. “We knew our first year would have both successes and stumbling blocks, but thinking back to the beginning… we’ve come so far to cement our place as this area’s go-to destination for amazing beer, food and hospitality. We can’t wait to show you what we’ve got in store for year two.”

MORE ABOUT CARTRIDGE BREWING

Veteran-owned, born within the restored historic Peters Cartridge Factory, located alongside the Little Miami River and bike trail, this isn’t your typical brewpub. Opening in the fall of 2020, the Cartridge team takes hospitality seriously – far above the standard restaurant-bar model, more focused and deliberate than most big production breweries. Brewing a balanced, crushable family of beers within its 15 bbl brewhouse (from lagers and IPAs to the light, eclectic and fruity), offering signature craft cocktails and curated wines, plus a full kitchen and fresh, upscale pub menus – all within 10,000 sq.ft. of restored industrial space … a community hub once again just north of Cincinnati, Ohio.

This easy-drinking amber colored brew gets its name from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) three letter code for the New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport, MSY.  Celebrating the proud aviation history of New Orleans and the recently opened state-of-the-art MSY terminal, this one-of-a-kind, aviation themed tap handle was developed in collaboration with Scale Innovations, a New Orleans based full-service industrial design and fabrication firm.

Scale Innovations, a uniquely equipped industrial design firm specializes in early-stage product development and specialty fabrication. “We’re thrilled to work with a company like Second Line that is elevating what made in New Orleans can mean. Our goal with this design was simple; make something that mirrors the quality and spirit that Second Line puts into every one of their beers. It’s that same feeling that keeps drawing people from around the world to our city — you just can’t find anything else quite like it.” Scale Innovations Founder, Lyle LeBlanc.

The vintage 1950’s airplane propeller concept of this handle harkens back to the Golden Age of air travel and the long history of commercial aviation in New Orleans. Serving the New Orleans area since 1946, MSY was built upon land named Moisant Stock Yards, after aviator John Moisant – hence the IATA code MSY. John Moisant was an award winning pilot who founded a traveling air circus with his brother, flying in air shows all over the country, including in Kenner, LA.  Over the years, the name of the New Orleans airport has changed several times, until being named Louis Armstrong International Airport in 2001 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Louis Armstrong’s birth.

“Long the gateway to New Orleans for travelers from all over the world, MSY has welcomed and introduced countless millions to this charmed magical city we call home” said Mark Logan, Co-Founder of Second Line Brewing.  “As a result,  MSY has  become for travelers and locals alike, a codeword  for New Orleans; capable of conjuring memories of great times, fantastic food and terrific beer.”

“We considered  many of the traditional options available for designing and producing tap handles, but we knew we wanted a tap handle that was impactful, captured the allure of air travel and would serve as a centerpiece on draft towers throughout the New Orleans area. said Logan.  “After looking at our options we decided to partner with Scale Innovations, given their outstanding reputation and the fact that they are just a few miles from our brewery and we liked the idea of keeping the project in New Orleans.”

Second Line Brewing was founded in 2014 by a group of friends wanting adventure and the chance to share the joys of craft beer with their community.  For the Second Line Brewing team, operating a neighborhood brewery is about having fun, brewing our best, and bringing people together.   As a Women-, Veteran- and Minority-owned business, Second Line Brewing stands committed to promoting the principles of diversity, inclusion and equality within the craft beer industry and our community.

October 24, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Jack's AbbyBoston & Framingham, Massachusetts – The NBA’s milestone 75th Anniversary Season has tipped off!

To celebrate the launch of the anniversary season and the fact that the Celtics are one of the original teams, Jack’s Abby felt that the start of the season deserved something special. Just like the Celtics have new specialty uniforms, Pride and Parquet is getting a whole new look with a limited-edition label to toast to 75 great years! The label won’t be around long. It is being released in the Jack’s Abby Beer Hall in Framingham Friday, October 22nd and in stores throughout New England starting Monday, October 25th for a limited time.

“The NBA will be celebrating 75 years this season and the Celtics are one of the two original teams to keep their name and city for that entire history.  That’s an incredible accomplishment and something to be proud of.  We wanted to punctuate this moment with a commemorative, limited edition can that reflects the heritage and pride of the Celtics over 75 years and gives our fans something special.” – Rob Day, Senior Director of Marketing at Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers

“The 75th season is a great opportunity for Celtics fans to reminisce and celebrate the many championships, legends, and iconic moments that help make up this franchise’s illustrious history, and our friends at Jack’s Abby have come up with a great way to commemorate this milestone. We look forward to seeing the limited edition of Pride and Parquet in stores soon!” – Ted Dalton, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships & Business Development at the Boston Celtics

“Every year, the Celtics come to the court with new drive, new ambition, and new hopes for the season. We wanted to capture that spirit of excitement with these limited edition cans. Symbols of the Celtics’ history are woven into the pattern of the parquet, capturing 75 years of memories, diligence, and hard-earned victory. Our first year as the Official Craft Brewery of the Boston Celtics was incredibly special to our team, and like the Celtics, we’re ready to hit the shelves to start the season with renewed vigor.” – Anna Keaney, Lead Graphic Designer at Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers

Pride and Parquet is the Official Craft Beer of the Boston Celtics, and is part of a four-year partnership between Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers, a family-owned brewery based in Framingham, MA, and the sports institution.

Pride and Parquet is an easy-drinking 5.7% ABV hoppy lager that was first released at the beginning of 2021. Pride and Parquet is built with pride. The Celtics feel their pride on the parquet and the team at Jack’s Abby feels it on brew day. With this beer, we set out to show that when two Boston Legends team up – Anything is Possible.
