Duckfoot Brewery Co. to Release Frank Zappa Tribute IPA – Why Does It Hurt When IPA?

December 27, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

Why Does It Hurt When IPA? - Duckfoot BrewerySAN DIEGO, California — The ZAPPA TRUST and San Diego-based Duckfoot Brewery Co have teamed up to launch a new FRANK ZAPPA tribute beer, Why Does It Hurt When IPA? It’s set to debut on ZAPPA’s birthday, December 21.

It’s a wild, improvisational jam of an IPA, brewed with ZAPPA hops, Simcoe and Cascade. The West Coast-style IPA has notes of passion fruit, spice and grapefruit(a favorite of FRANK ZAPPA’s) with a clean and dry finish. The can features never-before-published photos of Frank which pair nicely with the beer itself. In addition, the label explains more, “the Zappa hop, like the man, has a hugely eclectic style. Published flavor notes have ranged from passion fruit, mint, spicy, savory, fruity cereal, and uh…purple. (Try the beer, you’ll get it). Just like Frank, this hop is one of a kind and awesome.”

“Our new friends (but they feel like old friends) at Duck Foot Brewing Co are making a delicious new brew using the Zappa hop,” AHMET ZAPPA says. “Stay home, be safe and enjoy Why Does It Hurt When IPA? responsibly. All the Zappa Trust proceeds from this batch will go to support the music community in need. Music is the Best!”

“We are so beyond thrilled to be making a beer for one of our favorite musicians of all time,” Matt Delvecchio, Head Quack/Founder, Duck Foot Brewing Co adds.

Look for AHMET and the Duck Foot Brewing Co team to do an online meeting in the new year to discuss everything about the beer and take questions from fans around the world.

Why Does It Hurt When IPA? comes at the end of a busy year for ZAPPA. Beyond the releases of The Mothers 1970 and Halloween 81 earlier in the year, last month saw the debut of the long-awaited and highly-acclaimed Alex Winter documentary, “Zappa.” The film tells the story about the prolific genius composer, free speech activist, cultural ambassador to Czechoslovakia and legendary musician,Frank Zappa. It was accompanied by the surprise digital release of the corresponding Zappa Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. A perfect complement to the film, the 68-track soundtrack is available to stream and download now via Zappa Records/UMe. “Zappa” is now available everywhere in the U.S. from Magnolia Pictures.

Alaskan Brewing’s Baltic Porter Returns

December 27, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

Alaskan Baltic PorterJUNEAU, Alaska – Alaskan Baltic Porter is back as the latest brew for Alaskan Brewing’s limited Pilot Series. This rich and warming brew is a deep, dense beer with an intricate array of aromas and flavors that’s perfect for cold and dark winter nights, and for special occasions like the holidays.

“It’s always fun to brew this fan-favorite, and it also takes a lot of attention to detail,” said Alaskan Head Brewer Rob Day. “It has so many elements – with a blend of specialty malts, dark black cherries, brown sugar, gourmet vanilla beans, and finished on oak. And it is definitely a beer you can drink right away, but lots of folks like to age it to enhance the vanilla and cherry.”

First brewed in 2008 and most recently in 2017, fans have aged every vintage of Alaskan Baltic Porter, enjoying this rare beer on special occasions and in vertical tastings. Age enhances the smooth mouthfeel and malt sweetness as well as the fruit flavors.

Day’s tasting notes on Alaskan Baltic Porter emphasize deep maltiness, vanilla and cherry intensity and a warming from the 9.8% ABV. The color is jet-black from the deeply roasted malts, with hints of bourbon and toffee present from start to finish.

“Baltic Porters were originally brewed stronger and more hoppy than many other dark beers to endure the trip to remote communities along the Baltic Sea,” remarked Day. “So, it’s robust, with toasted French oak, and dried fruit notes. Here in Alaska, the warmth is also a very attractive feature especially in winter.”

The name and label of Baltic Porter links this beer to the Russian period of Alaska history, with the copula of a Russian Orthodox church featured prominently. These traditional onion-domed copulas are still present in many communities in Alaska, as well as other settlements along the Baltic Sea.

Day recommends drinking it right away, or aging for up to 10 years. “If anyone is still holding onto a 2008, I would recommend planning a special occasion to enjoy that one. I think after 10 years or so, this beer has probably peaked. An excellent way to taste this beer is to get a new bottle and compare it to the aged beer – you’re really able to pick out the changes in flavor that way.”

Alaskan Baltic Porter will be on shelves in 22-ounce bottles and on draft in select locations beginning in December and will available for approximately three months.

First-Ever Exclusive Christmas Village Kolsch Debuts in Philadelphia

December 24, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

Christmas Village Kolsch PHILADELPHIA — Christmas Village in Philadelphia’s last call at Love Park for the 2020 season is on Christmas Eve at 5:00pm. However, the authentic open-air German-style Christmas market has one final gift to give Philadelphia before closing up shop for the holidays. For the beer lover, the last minute shopper, or those wanting to soak up those famous vibes after tomorrow, Christmas Village debuts a brand-new exclusive Christmas Village Kolsch, brewed and canned by local independent brewery Bar Hygge/ Brewery Techne. The new beer is available in cans to go with a specially created label that incorporates the iconic scenery of Christmas Village at Love Park including The Alm and the Grill Hut. The cans are sold in four packs of one pint cans for $18.00. This is the first-ever Christmas Village inspired beer, and the only exclusive can available since Christmas Village and Bar Hygge/ Brewery Techne starting partnering together back in 2018.

“The Christmas Village Kolsch is custom made for us with our beer partner Bar Hygge/ Brewery Techne,” said Christmas Village Project Manager Nancy Schmalz. “We have been working with brewer Duffy Lonergan for three years now. They recently started canning their own beers and we talked about the idea of coming up with a very special beer that embodies the spirit of Christmas Village. We worked together for several months coming up with this special exclusive product and we are thrilled that visitors are loving it.”

The new Christmas Village Kolsch is a Golden Ale, brewed in German style. It comes in at 5.8% and is the lightest draft beer at Christmas Village in 2020. It joins the ranks of other beers by Bar Hygge/ Brewery Techne such as the Lemon Meringue IPA and the Wohlig Weissbier. The cans are available in to-go as four packs only. Beer lovers and shoppers can find them in the crowd-controlled food court in the middle of Love Park. Once inside the food court, head to The Alm (beer garden) and look for the beer booth just past the giant grill hut.
For inspiration behind the beer and the process, Schmalz worked with Lonergan this past summer on the selections for Love Park and the new season. High on the priority list was bringing a Kölsch (German style) beer to the market for the first time. Lonergan had been to Germany himself and was very familiar with the Kölsch style. As the season approached, the teams at Christmas Village and Bar Hygge/ Brewery Techne perfected the beer and debuted it in time for Christmas.

“Sales for the Christmas Village Kolsch are going extremely well considering it is the hidden gem of the market,” added Schmalz. “We wanted to introduce the beer slowly and test the reaction – and people are loving it! It is a great gift for the last minute Santa’s out there – and it’s a great way to bring home a four-pack and experience a taste of our beloved Christmas Village on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and for New Year’s. We are already exploring and talking about bringing it back for 2021 on a larger scale. We will make that decision formally after we close for the year and begin preparations for next year.”

Bar Hygge and Brewery Techne are located just blocks from Christmas Village in the Fairmount neighborhood, at 1720 Fairmount Avenue. There beer lovers can enjoy a rotating selection of adventurous, finely crafted beer from Brewery Techne, Bar Hygge’s in-house brewery. Lagers, ales, and saisons are all on tap, along with a hard cider or two.

Hygge is a Danish concept, embodying a feeling or mood, that comes from taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, every day things more meaningful, beautiful or special. For the team behind Bar Hygge, it means creating a warm atmosphere where guests can enjoy the good things in life with friends and family. Bar Hygge is not a Danish-themed restaurant. Chef Julie Kline presents a new/contemporary American menu with seasonal changes and a focus on neighborhood comfort food.

CHRISTMAS VILLAGE IN PHILADELPHIA
Christmas Village in Philadelphia, the authentic open-air German-style Christmas Market at LOVE Park and City Hall, is excited to announce its return from Thanksgiving Day, November 26 through Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020 with a considerably modified layout and extensive safety precautions in response to COVID-19. In its 13th season, the outdoor market will once again host a Preview Weekend on Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22.

In accordance with all city and statewide guidelines, Christmas Village in Philadelphia will be set up in a socially distanced and safe way featuring only half the amount of vendors. This year, visitors can still dine on and enjoy their favorite European dishes including Bratwurst, Raclette Cheese and Schnitzel in a fenced-off and crowd-controlled outdoor food court with spacing between tables.

This year’s outdoor shopping area will be set up with a one-way system around the outer limits of LOVE Park for a linear and spaced walking concept allowing proper social distancing. All vendors will be ten feet apart from each other at minimum. Vendors around the outer perimeter will also all face outward toward the street. Waiting areas for access to the food court and shopping will all be socially distanced.

Firestone Walker Releases “Comet” Single Hop Hazy IPA

December 16, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

Comet IPA brewed by Firestone Walker BrewingPaso Robles & Venice, CA: From Firestone Walker’s Propagator R&D brewhouse in Venice, California comes Comet IPA —the next limited-edition release in the new Propagator Series, available in the latest “Crafted Thru Hops” mixed pack.

The Crafted Thru Hops mixed pack featuring Comet is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets starting now.

This new mixed pack—12 x 12-ounce cans—also includes three other hoppy beers from one of the nation’s foremost IPA brewers: Mind Haze, a hazy IPA done the Firestone way; the West Coast IPA legend known as Union Jack; and Double Jack, Firestone Walker’s iconic imperial IPA.

Comet IPA: Limited Single-Hop Release

Comet is a classic yet largely overlooked American-grown hop variety that has become a favorite of the Firestone Walker brewing team—inspiring them to create this single-hop hazy IPA that offers a bright floral citrus fruit character with hints of coconut. “During selection in Yakima Valley, we walked through a Comet hop yard and were struck by how good it looked on the bine with these big, gnarly green cones,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “Rubbing some fresh-picked hops in the field convinced us that it was worth following up, and we fell in love with the results once we started brewing with it.”

Mind Haze: Let Your Mind Wander
From the coast of California comes Mind Haze, a free-spirited beer made to elevate your perceptions—juicy, fresh and loaded with an imaginative array of tropical hop flavors. This is a hazy IPA done the Firestone way. Mind Haze is ultimately a beer that breaks the mold with explosive hop aromas, a luscious texture and enduring freshness.

Double Jack: Back by Demand
Famed as one of the craft world’s trailblazing double IPAs, Double Jack is back by popular demand as a limited seasonal release. In the words of Brewmaster Matt Brynildson, “We stayed very true to the original recipe and the spirit of a legendary West Coast double IPA.” The result is a massively hopped yet improbably balanced double IPA—and an enduring throwback to the freewheeling origins of the West Coast style.

Union Jack: Loud & Proud
Huge flavor that packs a punch. This is Union Jack—an icon of the West Coast IPA style, for those who like their beer loud and proud. Union Jack is the IPA that helped blaze the trail for the revolutionary West Coast style. Named for the British Lion who cofounded the brewery, Union Jack is intensely hoppy yet eminently drinkable from start to finish. A fad-proof IPA for any hop head.

Firestone Walker Brewing
Founded by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker in 1996, Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a California beer company with three innovative brewing facilities. Firestone Walker’s main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. The Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers and limited local offerings. Firestone Walker is also the brewery behind 805, one of the nation’s fastest-growing beers. Firestone Walker was recently named “Best American Brewery of the Decade” by Paste Magazine. Ska Street Brewstillery Debuts First Packaged Products: Chasing Gremlins Imperious Stout And Third Wave White Rum

December 16, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

Ska Street Brewstillery Debuts Chasing Gremlins Imperious Stout And Third Wave White RumBOULDER, CO— Ska Street Brewstillery, the first Colorado business of its kind, begins limited distribution today with the release of their first packaged products— Chasing Gremlins Barrel Aged Imperious Stout and Third Wave White Rum crafted by Brewstiller Damon Scott.

In the truest fashion of the Legion of Ska, Ska Street, a joint project of sister companies Ska Brewing and Peach Street Distillers, will hit the market in a big way— with a bold, 18.5% ABV beer and an inspired spirit that showcase Scott’s robust brewing and distilling background. Scott received his MSc degree in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt University, and worked as the Technical Brewing Projects manager of the Brewers Association with a decade of brewery production and management in between.

“This is the guy we put in place to execute everything we’ve learned in 40 collective years of experience in brewing and distilling,” says Ska Brewing CEO and Co-Founder Dave Thibodeau. “We’re proud to showcase his unique skill set and the facility we’ve built around him with the release of a new product from both sides of Ska Street.”

Chasing Gremlins Imperious Stout was aged at Ska Street in a Peach Street Colorado Straight Bourbon 5 Year Single Barrel, with added maraschino cherries and vanilla to “layer in flavors like you would a cocktail,” Scott explains. Chasing Gremlins connects the dots between the brewing and distilling side of what Ska Street does, Scott says. “At 37 proof, it’s almost a spirit in itself!”

Along with Chasing Gremlins comes Third Wave White Rum, distilled from 100% organic cane sugar. Tasting notes include tropical fruit, pineapple, and banana esters, with a hint of vanilla sweetness. Third Wave is Scott’s first contribution to the Peach Street family of spirits, which up until now has not included rum.

“Traditionally rum has a lot of mixed culture fermentation, which offers a chance for us to use our super traditional copper, alembic pot still,” Scott says. “We picked specific yeasts isolated from rum fermentations known to produce esters and more fruity flavors, and our still allowed us to retain as much of that character as possible.”

Third Wave Rum bottles and Chasing Gremlins Imperious Stout bombers will be available this week across Colorado. The beer and spirit will be self-distributed by Ska Street in Boulder and Palisade, and by Ska Distributing in Durango.

Athletic Brewing Co. Launches Dry January Survival Pack

December 14, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

Athletic Brewing - Dry January Survival PackSTRATFORD, Ct. AND SAN DIEGO, California — The 12-months of 2020 have been 365 days to forget. While 2021 can’t arrive soon enough, flipping the calendar often means renewing an annual commitment to pursuing a healthy and active lifestyle. For some, this means beginning the New Year with a Dry January and for others, it means elevating their inner athlete to a new level.

Regardless of the motive, January is viewed as the month of giving things up – going on diets, cutting back on socializing, and reducing or eliminating alcoholic beverages. Too often Dry January is viewed as full of compromise and for many hard to sustain. Athletic Brewing Company, America’s first brewery dedicated solely to brewing nonalcoholic beers, is changing that thinking with “athletic” beers that are great tasting, low in calories, all-natural, refreshing, and just happen to be nonalcoholic.

In 2019, an estimated 69 million Americans (20 percent) went “dry” during January. According to Nielsen, 66 percent of U.S. adults, 21-34, are consciously reducing their alcoholic consumption.

“Athletic Brewing is focused on reminding beer lovers that being dry doesn’t have to be about giving something up and doesn’t have to end in January. It’s about living life to the fullest and above all, living without compromise to the best of your ability each and every day of the year,” said Athletic Brewing Co-founder Bill Shufelt. “Athletic Brewing will see a lift in sales from December to January when the rest of the industry’s sales go down. We are taking nonalcoholic beers out of the penalty box, creating new occasions for beer and more importantly opening the eyes of drinkers looking to maximize their performance in every facet of life.”

Beginning in December, Athletic Brewing is offering the Dry January Survival Pack, which will feature five six-packs of Run Wild IPA, Upside Dawn, Free Wave Double Hop IPA, All Out Stout, Cerveza Atletica, and a branded Athletic Brewing glass. The Dry January Survival Pack will be available at Athleticbrewing.com while supplies last. Each beer features fewer than 90 calories, the full-flavored refreshment of craft beer, all-natural ingredients, and no alcohol or hangover. To receive the Survival Pack for the start of Dry January, consumers must order it by December 20, retails for $49.99.

The nonalcoholic beer market in the U.S. surged to $132 million in 2019 and, despite the pandemic, the nonalcoholic craft beer market is up 298 percent year-to-date. Athletic Brewing surpassed its 2019 brewing levels in May of this year and its sales are up 500 percent year-over-year. In just its third year of operation, the company has outgrown the 12,000 barrel capacity of its brewery headquartered in Connecticut and expanded its capacity by adding 125,000 barrels in its new San Diego facility.

Named by Fast Company magazine as one of the “World’s Most Innovative” companies in 2020, craft-beer fans can find Athletic Brewing’s revolutionary Upside Dawn Golden Ale and Run Wild IPA at major retailers in the U.S. They also ship directly to consumers at www.athleticbrewing.com where craft beer lovers can purchase Athletic’s full portfolio of flagship, seasonal, and specialty beers plus join the brewer’s subscription offering – The Athletic Club.

Athletic Brewing proudly donates two percent of all sales to trail and park cleanups through their “Two for the Trails” program and expects to contribute more than $500,000 to trails and other charities across the nation this year.
