Great Divide releases Wood Werks No. 1 Belgian-Style Sour

January 31, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Great Divide releases Wood Werks No. 1 Belgian-Style Sour
DENVER – Great Divide Brewing Company is excited to announce their new barrel aged series, Wood Werks. The series kicks things off with a Belgian-Style Sour in February.

“We were coming up on the 10th anniversary of our original Barrel Aged Series,” said Brian Dunn, founder of Great Divide. “It felt like it was time to breathe some new life into the program and take a more modern approach to barrel aged beers.”

The first Wood Werks release is a Belgian-style tripel artfully soured for 15 months in red wine barrels and aged on plums. This extremely limited spiced sour ale is 9.3 percent ABV and has notes of luscious stone fruit with a tart, dry finish and hint of French oak. Wood Werks Belgian-Style Sour will be available seasonally from February through March in 12oz bottles and kegs.

Great Divide began barrel aging beers around 2004 with very small releases and nearly all barrels coming from Stranahan’s Whiskey. In 2008 the program grew to three releases a year with Barrel Aged Yeti, Barrel Aged Old Ruffian, and Barrel Aged Hibernation. All three of these beers were released as part of Great Divide’s original barrel aging program until 2017, which culminated with the release of the Barrel Aged Classics gift pack last spring.

With the brewery’s Brighton expansion, Great Divide invested in two temperature and humidity controlled barrel aging rooms, which allows for greater control over the elements that affect the way in which barrel character develops over time. This control has allowed the brewery to build up a world class barrel aging program and create more diversity within its lineup, strengthening its portfolio overall.

“This Belgian-Style Sour showcases our creativity and thoughtful approach to a Belgian-Style Tripel,” said Brandon Jacobs, brewing manager at Great Divide. “It really is a labor of love and patience.”

This first release will be followed by a Flemish Sour Brown Ale in May, and a Barrel Aged Brown Rye Ale in August.

pFriem Family Brewers Announces First Quarter Beer Releases

pFriem Family Brewers Announces First Quarter Beer Releases

Oregon’s pFriem Family Brewers’ first releases of 2018 are dynamic and distinctive: the opening act for a list of over 100 artisan beers that the prolific brewery will release in the coming months. To start out the year, fans will find the following beers (among others) from the Pacific Northwest brewery:

Mosaic Pale: Deep within the arid climate of Washington’s Yakima Valley grows the Mosaic Hop, a newcomer that makes its debut in the pFriem Mosaic Single Hop Pale. This seasonal strong ale glows with an amber hue. Wafts of mango and citrus tease the senses just long enough before its assertive taste takes over with hits of lemon, pine and a slight tinge of blueberry. Make no mistake; this ale has a bright and tasty future.

Hoppy Belgian Ale: pFriem’s Hoppy Belgian Ale is a light, dynamic brew, with notes of papaya, strawberry, mint and wildflower honey. Creamy with a soft round finish, this seasonal Belgian looks like spun gold. And tastes like it, too.

IPA: When the first Pale Ales were sailed around the Cape to arrive in India in the early 18th century, outcries of “Zounds! Jolly good! and Huzzah!” were heard across the East Indian subcontinent. Similar exclamations are to be expected when sniffing the piney aroma and tasting the big hops, huge citrus and candy-like malt of pFriem’s own IPA. Drink up, Guv’nor.

Capital Brewery Celebrates the 200th Anniversary of the Bicycle

Capital Brewery Celebrates the 200th Anniversary of the Bicycle

(Middleton, WI) What ubiquitous invention was inspired by a volcanic eruption and summer snow in Europe?

In 1815 the eruption of Indonesia’s Tambora volcano caused in a snowy summer in Europe, and a scarcity of oats. Baron Karl Christian Ludwig von Drais de Sauerbrum had been working on human powered alternatives to horses, and patented the Laufmaschine, or running machine, on February 17, 1818. Pedals, chains, brakes, and pneumatic tires soon followed, and now we have carbon fiber frames, electric bikes, and bike powered taxis.

In honor of this auspicious event Capital Brewery in conjunction with the Capital Bike Club will brew a special beer and sponsor a bicycle raffle, vintage bike rodeo, bike swap, and many other bike-centric events throughout the 2018 Bier Garten season.

A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Ludwig’s Lager will be donated to the Capital Off-Road Pathfinders (CORP), the Bombay Bicycle Club, and the Wisconsin Bike Federation.

In addition Capital will host a vintage bicycle race. The cyclists will participate in a re-creation of the what is considered the world’s first bicycle race – held near Mannheim, Germany in 1817 – at the Capital Brewery Bier Garten a.k.a. Middleton’s Backyard!

“Bombay Bicycle Club is excited to partner with Capital Brewery Bike Club in honoring the 200th year anniversary of the invention of the bicycle” said Karla Kohli King, President of the Bombay Bicycle Club of Madison.

“We are looking forward to another exciting season of cycling” added Richard King, co-founder of the Capital Brewery Bike Club.

Sprecher Returns to Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point Neighborhood

January 30, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Glendale, WI – In 1985, Randy Sprecher opened Milwaukee’s first brewery since Prohibition at 730 W. Oregon St., in the Walker’s Point neighborhood. In 1992 Sprecher Brewery received a vacate notice. Soon after the canal wall and then the parking lot fell into the Menomonee River Channel. In 1993, Sprecher moved his brewery to Glendale, a suburb just outside the city limits. Since that time Sprecher has been a production brewery, a tourist destination and event space. Twenty-five years later, the brewery has the rare chance to return to its old stomping grounds in Walker’s Point. “Why not? I’m looking forward to it,” said founder Randy Sprecher.

A space two blocks away from the original brewery – 706 S. 5th St., the space previously occupied by Brenner Brewery – became available and Sprecher seized the opportunity to open an off-site taproom, which it is calling “Sprecher Milwaukee.” The space has twenty-four working tap lines, furniture and brewing equipment left by its former occupant. “There’s so much interest from every direction, we’re feeling really welcome. And we’re working round the clock to get this place ready by our planned February 17th opening,” said Sprecher president Jeff Hamilton. “We weren’t actively looking to open a taproom, but when something this good happens it’s foolish to say no. Walker’s Point has become a hub for Milwaukee craft beer and the craft beer community. This space allows us to present a different experience than we offer in Glendale.”

When asked about plans for the taproom Hamilton replied, “It happened so quickly we are still putting things in place. We’re going to have some memorabilia from the original Sprecher Brewery in Walker’s

Point. We’ll have 20+ beers and a couple of our sodas on tap. Folks from all different areas of the brewery (brewhouse, lab, production, sales) will beertend.

“Most people have never had access to the incredible range of beers we produce so we’re going to make it easy and fun by offering several unique flights, and a lot of other options you won’t find anywhere else. We plan to serve individual beers in the appropriate glassware. And yes, there will be beer related activities. In a nutshell, this taproom is a celebration of Milwaukee’s historic and contemporary craft beer culture.”

Sprecher Milwaukee at 706 S. 5th St in Walker’s Point opens February 17th. Soft openings and other public events will take place at the taproom prior to the official opening.

Sprecher Brewery has no plans to move from its Glendale production facility and gift shop located at 701 W. Glendale Avenue. The Glendale location – which includes the brewhouse, bottling line, taproom, Rathskellar and gift shop – remains open to the public for brewery tours, events, shopping, and drinks in the indoor beer garden taproom.

About Sprecher Brewing Company:
Maker of award-winning beers and sodas, Sprecher Brewing Company is Milwaukee’s first craft brewery since Prohibition. Established by Randal Sprecher in 1985, Sprecher continues to be a leader in Wisconsin’s craft brewing industry.

Sprecher Brewery, the Sprecher Gift Shop and Indoor Beer Garden are located at 701 W. Glendale Ave, Glendale, WI. The Gift Shop and Indoor Beer Garden are open Monday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm; Sunday, 11am – 5pm. Tours offered daily. More information about the brewery history, products, tours and Gift Shop hours can be found at www.sprecherbrewery.com, or by calling 414.964.2739.

Sprecher’s Walker’s Point taproom – Sprecher Milwaukee at 706 S. 5th St. – is scheduled to open February 17th. Visit Sprecher Brewery on facebook, Instagram, twitter and www.sprecherbrewery.com for up to the minute details about hours and pre-opening events.

Pelican Brewing Company Adds Super Clean ‘Hoppinated’ IPA, Beak Bender, to Year-Round Lineup

January 30, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Pelican Brewing Company Adds Super Clean ‘Hoppinated’ IPA, Beak Bender, to Year-Round Lineup

With a flair for exploring all the delicious ways to tap the full spectrum of hop flavors and aroma, Pelican Brewing Company this week adds what brewers are calling the ‘ultimate IPA’ to its year-round lineup. Leaning on its pioneering dry-hopping invention to extract even more character from its ingredients, Pelican has crafted Beak Bender, a contemporary hop-forward yet astonishingly drinkable IPA. A super clean bitterness and punchy, juicy hop flavor are the hallmarks of this unique beer.

Bountiful quantities of Citra and El Dorado hops offer aromas and flavors reminiscent of luminous citrus and zesty orange balanced against a lean malt bill for a well-attenuated delicious new brew. Beak Bender rounds out Pelican’s scope of IPAs with a delicious new twist on a classic—and all at an astoundingly drinkable 6.7% ABV.

“Beak Bender is an exciting addition to the Pelican lineup of IPAs providing a bright, fruity and juicy hop character while also delivering a subtle malty balance and a very clean finish,” says Darron Welch, founding brewmaster, Pelican Brewing Company. “Overall hop punch and drinkability are the key features of Beak Bender—Pelican has always strived to create beers with great aromatic intensity and snappy clean bitterness, and those are at the forefront of this delicious new IPA.”

Since it was born at the beach 21 years ago, Pelican has enjoyed a reputation for leading American IPA development, creating and releasing numerous multi-award-winning IPAs including India Pelican Ale, Imperial Pelican Ale, Umbrella IPA, Silverspot IPA , Beak Breaker and now Beak Bender.

“Darron has crafted groundbreaking ales for Pelican since its inception and his reputation for brewing creativity and quality cannot be overstated,” says Jim Prinzing, CEO, Pelican Brewing Company. “To make the cut at Pelican, a beer must deliver a clean, well-attenuated finish that really promotes drinkability and balance. With Beak Bender, Darron was able to deliver on all those key points and STILL turn the hop flavor to 11. To me, it is the ultimate IPA—loads of aroma all the way to the last sip and supremely drinkable.”

What makes Beak Bender so special?

Consistent with an independent spirit and award-winning creativity rooted at Oregon’s rugged coast, Pelican last year set out to invent an alternative method to dry hop beer. Driven by a desire to create a more efficient and safer method to dry hop, brewmaster Welch masterminded a better vessel—’The Hoppinator,’ a more productive and sanitary system for dry-hopping beer. Welch rethought the process of how to introduce hops to the fermenter and designed a new vessel to accomplish this task.

The biggest difference for the beer drinker is enhanced taste and aroma. The new process introduces much less oxygen—the hop pellets go directly into the clean vessel, then the brewer seals the vessel and purges with CO2. As a result, there is extremely low oxygen pickup compared to the traditional dry-hopping process which increases flavor stability and quality.

According to Welch, because the hops are incorporated into the liquid with an agitator and emulsified in the beer, then shot back into the main fermenter, the brewers are able to extract much more flavor and aroma from the hops than the traditional method of dry hopping. The benefit is that Pelican can now extract even more character from each pound of hops.

“At Pelican we constantly search for unique and delicious ways to explore the full spectrum of hop flavor and aroma—the idea for Beak Bender was to reimagine what an IPA could be in 2018 with the hop varieties and even a new dry hop injection process we have available today,” says Welch. “We turned to two bold, flavorful hop varieties and used our proprietary dry hopping device ‘The Hoppinator’ to rend every molecule of flavor and aroma.”

Beak Bender, which will be available year-round, debuts early February in 6-packs, 22 oz. bottles and on draft in select locations.

With consistent growth and demand for its products, Pelican recently increased brewing and bottling capacity at its Tillamook facility to over 38,000 barrels and opened a new brewpub in Cannon Beach which offers additional capacity for such experimentation.

Like all Pelican beers, Beak Bender is born at the beach by a team of award-winning craft beer makers known for brewing styles of beer that they themselves love to drink. Cheers!

Melvin Brewing, born in 2009, is the beer child of Jeremy Tofte and Kirk McHale to fulfill their desire to drink the madness. Their quest was to produce the biggest and baddest West-Coast Style IPAs in Jackson, WY. Like true chemists, they experimented on a 30-gallon, then three-barrel brew house system, and developed the award-winning Melvin IPA and 2×4 Imperial IPA. Today, Melvin Brewing, named Brewery Group Brewer of the Year, is a highly decorated award winning brewery with a full-scale brewing facility in Alpine, WY, a brewpub in Bellingham, WA, and astoundingly, more than 40 mouthwatering beer recipes to its name, including a range of hoppy beers and other styles such as ChChCh-Cherry Bomb (Fruit Beer), Killer Bees (Honey Ale), Coffee Ruckus (Coffee Imperial Stout) and Wu’Wit (Belgian Wit). If your beer is not madness, it’s not beer. For the low down on the madness, visit www.melvinbrewing.com.
