Diageo’s Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore Releases Over The Moon Milk Stout

September 30, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

BALTIMORE — No one knows stout quite like Guinness. Today, just over 50 years after the first man landed on the moon, the brewers at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore announce Guinness Over The Moon Milk Stout – the latest in a line of new beers to come out of the home of experimental Guinness beers in the U.S.

The newest beer to join the Guinness family is a full-bodied stout that has a creamy mouthfeel, full of flavor with hints of roasted malt, milk chocolate and rich coffee. At an ABV of 5.3%, this beer harvests bold notes of roasted barley and hops, adding a warming bitterness that is offset with the cream-like sweetness from the milk sugars of the lactose used in brewing.

“Guinness Over The Moon Milk Stout was born from an idea to make a beer that could celebrate our stout brewing expertise, speak to a wide spectrum of beer drinkers, and also convey the creativity and versatility of our brewing team here in Baltimore,” said Hollie Stephenson, Head Brewer at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery. “The beer has notes of caramel, chocolate, and a light roastiness that might remind some people of our historic stouts, however it finishes with a sweetness characteristic of milk stouts, which we believe makes this beer very approachable and appealing to a wider audience.”

The inspiration for Guinness Over The Moon Milk Stout’s striking sky-blue packaging and artwork came from the iconic advertisements of the 1930’s and 1950’s depicting zoo animals interacting with pints of Guinness. These drawings can also be found on previous limited-edition Guinness Draught cans.

Guinness Over The Moon Milk Stout also makes a great complement to virtually any meal for those 21+. Its roasted barley character pairs nicely with most grilled or roasted meats, while its subtle sweetness and notes of chocolate and coffee blend nicely with a wide range of desserts like pecan pie, chocolate chip cookies or even s’mores. Whether enjoying a pint of Guinness Over The Moon Milk Stout at the Open Gate Brewery in Baltimore, at home with friends and family or anywhere else, please do so responsibly.

Guinness Over The Moon Milk Stout can be found on shelves now in select areas including the Baltimore, Boston, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia metro areas (as well as in the brewery’s taproom) as a permanent addition to the Guinness family. Beginning in November, the stout will also be available nationally for a limited time. The beer will be sold in six packs of 12oz cans for a suggested price of $10.99.

To keep up to date with the latest news from the Open Gate Brewery and Guinness, make sure to follow @GuinnessBreweryUS on Facebook and Instagram or visit GuinnessBreweryBaltimore.com and @GuinnessUS on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Guests of all ages are always welcome to visit the Guinness Open Gate Brewery Monday through Wednesday 3:00pm to 9:00pm, Thursday 3:00pm to 10:00pm, Friday 12:00pm to 10:00pm, Saturday 11:00am to 10:00pm and Sunday 11:00am to 9:00pm and enjoy a guided tour of the brewing facility.

Ska Brewing Cans The Hazy IPA Of 2019; Announces Coming Brand Refresh

September 27, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

DURANGO, CO— After much experimentation on its Mod pilot system, Ska Brewing is excited to finally offer a hazy IPA in a can— The Hazy IPA of choice after an array of test batches. This new offering from Ska will be available October 1, and it will go down as the beer that sparked Ska’s coming brand refresh.

Ska’s rendition of this popular beer style is a long time coming, named The Hazy IPA because it’s the recipe that Ska’s brewers determined would go in a can after many different batches. This 6.5% ABV, full-bodied New England-styled IPA is rich with juicy and citrus-forward tropical notes obtained through a variety of proprietary hopping techniques.

Unlike Ska’s other canned offerings, there’s not a character or a punny name associated with this beer style. Instead the artwork pops with bold colors and Ska’s trademark checkerboard stripe that wraps the can. “When we put all of these comic book elements together, we realized this was a good direction to ultimately refresh our entire line of beer cans,” says Ska’s co-founder and CEO Dave Thibodeau.

The Hazy IPA will release in cans and on draft at Ska’s World Headquarters on October 1. This beer will also be available in canned 6-packs and on draft in select accounts across Ska’s 13-state distribution footprint. The Hazy IPA cans are the first glimpse at Ska’s refresh of select brands with announcements to follow in coming months.

For more information about Ska Brewing or its new hazy offering, contact Emily Hutto at coop@radcraftbeer.com.

Firestone Walker Releases Molé Merkin

September 27, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

PASO ROBLES, Calif. — Firestone Walker is set to unveil Molé Merkin, a spicy spin on the brewery’s Velvet Merkin barrel-aged milk stout.

Molé Merkin begins rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets this week in individually boxed 12-ounce bottles. It is the fourth out of five Proprietor’s Vintage releases slated for 2019.

Barrel Program Manager Eric Ponce drew upon his own Mexican heritage to create Molé Merkin. Inspired by family recipes inherited from his grandmothers, Ponce aged the beer in bourbon barrels with additions of Puya chile peppers, cocoa nibs and cinnamon to capture the essence of the traditional Mexican sauce known as molé.

The cinnamon adds a hint of sweet spice, while the cocoa nibs bring luscious balance to the medium lingering heat of the peppers. The result is a smooth, chocolaty stout with its own distinctive kick.

“Fall is a perfect time of year to enjoy Molé Merkin,” Ponce said. “It offers these warming spices that really go with the cooling weather and vibes of autumn.”

Ponce chose Velvet Merkin as the base beer because it was the perfect foil for the style he envisioned: “As a milk stout, it has this creaminess that evokes the creamy texture of molé. It also has chocolate notes that play really well with the cocoa nibs and cinnamon.”

“This beer has a lot of personal meaning behind it,” Ponce said. “Every time I taste it, it brings back childhood memories of family dinners and gatherings, where molé dishes were a staple. It’s that sense of joy and flavor that I wanted to convey with Molé Merkin.”

Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a pioneering regional craft brewery founded in 1996 and located on the coast of California. Firestone Walker’s main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio ranging from iconic pale ales to vintage barrel-aged beers. The Barrelworks facility in Buellton makes eccentric wild ales, while the Propagator pilot brewhouse in Venice specializes in R&D beers and limited local offerings. About Brew Gentlemen
Brew Gentlemen aims to create soft, balanced and elegant beers and meaningful experiences while helping revitalize the historic steel town of Braddock, Pennsylvania. The company was born out of the desire to carve our own path, build for the long term, while choosing to care in everything we take on.

Brew Gentlemen announced its expansion at the start of 2019. Plans include the renovation of a 28,000 sq. foot property adjacent to the company’s current Mon Valley taproom and brewhouse to include a full-scale production facility, in which Brew Gentlemen beer will be produced and canned at a greatly increased capacity on a 20bbl American made Sprinkman Brewing System. Increased production will allow Brew Gentlemen to fill a market gap by distributing their flagship beer, General Braddock’s IPA, as a consistently available, quality choice. All operations in the existing taproom and brewery will continue in tandem in their current form. The purpose of the expansion is to provide more beer, for more people, in a more convenient way.

Through these developments, Brew Gentlemen is proud to be able to double down on investing in Braddock. We want to be good neighbors, build something special, and continue to reinvest in the historic town that’s become our company’s home.

Bear Republic Brewing Releases Challenge Series #10 A Myrcene IPA

September 25, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

CLOVERDALE, Calif. — Challenge Series #10 A Myrcene IPA is the newest ale from Bear Republic Brewing Company and clocks in at 6.8% ABV. This IPA has all the good stuff: citrus, pine, stone fruit and classic west-coast hoppiness. Two-row malt and wheat along with our house yeast create a balanced finish.

“A Myrcene IPA delivers an epic hop terpene experience, this tastes like an instant classic. Like all Challenge Series releases, this brew is the result of our freshest ideas and a cutting edge take on the IPA formula. We hopped this beer with over 4 pounds per barrel of Chinook, Centennial, and experimental hop HBC 431, all of which are high in myrcene, to deliver a spicy, piney, and citrusy punch,” said Bear Republic Brewmaster Roger Herpst. “I snuck some Amarillo in there, too. Those hops are amazing.”

Each addition in the Challenge Series lineup is a fresh take on trending ale styles, each beer tastes unique and only brewed once. Challenge Series #10 A Myrcene IPA clocks in at 6.8% abv and for best results keep it on ice for your next adventure. This ale is a late hopped, West Coast IPA that you will want to share with friends.
