Celis Brewery Releases Pale Bock in Cans

June 30, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

AUSTIN, Texas — Celis Brewery is introducing Celis Pale Bock in aluminum cans. This amber-colored, rich-flavored beer is one of the brand’s original beers first brewed in 1992, but until now it has only been available in bottles and on draft. Beginning June 2018, customers will be able to find and purchase this in-demand beer in 12-ounce cans at Celis beer retailers across the state of Texas. Celis Pale Bock will soon release in 16-ounce cans as well.

“Our original recipe Belgian Pale Bock is a great beer for any occasion,” said Christine Celis, founder of Celis Brewery. “Now that it is available in cans, people can enjoy Celis Pale Bock at their favorite outdoor activities. This is our third heritage beer to be packaged in cans this year. Our Celis White and Celis Raspberry have been incredibly popular in cans, and people have been clamoring for Pale Bock to be distributed in cans too. Here it is.”

Celis Pale Bock is an easy-drinking amber with delicious flavors of berry, malt, and a touch of bitterness at the finish. It is brewed with caramel malts with Saaz, Willamette, and Cascade hops. It is as refreshing on a hot day by the lake, as it is as satisfying with a burger at a cookout.

Celis Pale Bock is available on draft, in bottles, and now in cans at hundreds of bars, restaurants, and retail stores in Texas. All Celis Brewery beers are widely distributed throughout the state.

About Celis Brewery
Celis Brewery, founded by Christine Celis in Austin, Texas, brews Belgian-style ales and other beers, including the original witbier that Pierre Celis brewed in Hoegaarden, Belgium. Reuben’s Brews gives back $100,000 to Seattle nonprofits

June 30, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

SEATTLE, Washington – Reuben’s Brews has donated $100,000 to local nonprofit organizations through a number of outreach programs, including the brewery’s popular “Thank You Thursday” events. This weekly event supports a variety of local nonprofits at the brewery’s Ballard taproom.

“As a small, family-owned business, it is very important to us that we remain connected with our community and support the good work our neighbors do,” said Grace Robbings, co-founder of the brewery whose commitment to philanthropy started nearly 20 years ago when she became a Peace Corps volunteer. “We are grateful to them for the work they do to care for and serve our community. To be able to get to know them and their missions through the Thank You Thursday program is incredibly inspiring, and we are thankful to be able to support them in this way.”

Each Thursday, the brewery hosts a different nonprofit organization at its taproom. Throughout the evening, $1 of every pint, growler or set of at least three tasters sold goes to the hosted organization. Representatives from the organization are invited onsite to talk about their work and raise awareness for their cause. The range of supported organizations is wide, with just a few examples including those that work to protect the environment, provide resources for children and women who have been abused, advocate for human rights, empower those living with mental illness or disabilities, feed and shelter the homeless, and care for animals.

One of the most popular Thank You Thursday events is “Baby Goats and Brews” with the Puget Sound Goat Rescue. The organization brings out several baby goats for guests to pet while they learn more about the animals and how they can support the rescue (while drinking beer). This year’s event will be held on Thursday, July 19 at the taproom, 5010 14th Ave NW, Seattle.

Sarah Klapstein of the Puget Sound Goat Rescue said, “Our annual Thank You Thursday event with Reuben’s Brews has become one of the fundraising highlights of our year. Not only do we raise much needed funds for the rescue and care of the more than 200 goats we save each year, it also supports our mission of educating people about goats and the need for our life saving work. We are so grateful to be a part of this amazing program!”

In addition to the Thank You Thursday program, Reuben’s Brews supports: the work of Gorilla FC to help build tiny houses through the Low Income Housing Initiative; the Ales for ALS program; the Pink Boots Society for women in the beer industry; and numerous nonprofit fundraisers with in-kind donations.

About Reuben’s Brews

Breakside Brewery in Portland, Oregon Releases Qualia and Fourth Wave

June 30, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Portland, Oregon –   Breakside Brewery has added two more beers to its 2018 portfolio this month with the release of Qualia and Fourth Wave. Both beers are barrel aged and were several months in the making, but are about as different as two brews can be. The Breakside brewing team had some fun experimenting to create these two “labors of love.”

• Qualia is the second in Breakside’s new wood-aged sour beer series, simply dubbed “Breakside Sour.” 2018 is the first year that the brewery is releasing its award-winning, barrel-aged sour and wild beers to wide distribution. A result of a complex blending process and months of aging, Qualia is blended from 15 casks of mixed culture beers. Aged on mangoes after blending, it shows balanced acidity and a kiss of Brettanomyces. ABV: 6.7% / IBUs: 3

• Fourth Wave is the result of two great loves of Oregonians: coffee and beer. Instead of a stout or porter, which more typically boast coffee flavors, Fourth Wave is an amber colored base beer that dovetails into flavors of a lightly roasted coffee. A Vienna-style coffee beer, this brew was made with a single-origin Stumptown Coffee (also based in Oregon) and aged 14 months in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels. ABV: 9.6% / IBUs: 40

Look for three more creations coming up in the Breakside Sour series before the end of this year, along with about 15 further limited and series releases ranging from IPAs to barrel-aged rarities.

About Breakside Brewery
Breakside Brewery opened in 2010 in Northeast Portland as a restaurant and pub brewery. The brewery is known for its innovative, experimental and diverse beers. In 2013, Breakside expanded operations to Milwaukie, OR with a 30 bbl production brewery filled with 30, 60 and 120 barrel tanks, barrel rooms for wild and non-wild/sour fermentations, a high-speed bottling line and a 24-tap tasting room. The brewery expanded to Northern California in 2016 and in 2017 Breakside opened its third location in the Slabtown district of Northwest Portland. In addition to winning several national and regional awards for its beers, Breakside was named Brewery of the Year at the 2017 Oregon Beer Awards and the 2017 Best of Craft Beer Awards. Breakside sells on draft and in 22oz bottles in Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Maine, Northern California, British Columbia and Alberta. www.breakside.com

Sprecher Brewing Releases its Newest Taste Sensation: Hard Watermelon!

June 29, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Glendale, Wisconsin – Sprecher Brewing Company’s newest flavor of adult beverages, Hard Watermelon, rolls off the bottling line today. It’s an amazingly refreshing low alcohol soda (4.2%) that is a perfect thirst quencher for summertime, or anytime really. Like the non-alcoholic Watermelon Soda Sprecher released in May, Hard Watermelon is a mildly carbonated beverage that begins with a tantalizing watermelon bouquet, is loaded with “just sweet enough” watermelon flavors, and has a dry finish. It is terrific served chilled or over ice. It also makes an awesome mixer for cocktails.

“Watermelon is a popular beverage flavor this season. After we rolled out our non-alcoholic Watermelon soda we had enthusiastic responses from customers; many inquired about a hard soda version. We saw an opportunity in the market for a low alcohol soda and decided to do a limited run.” said Sprecher president Jeff Hamilton.

Asheville’s Hi-Wire Brewing to Open Taproom in Durham, North Carolina

June 29, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina — Durham, NC has always been a dream destination for Hi-Wire Brewing owners Chris Frosaker and Adam Charnack. Alive with an eccentric culture, a booming music and arts scene, endless boutique restaurants, and an active political community, Durham, NC has always seemed like a natural fit for the Asheville, NC-based brewery.

Yep, that’s right folks, Hi-Wire Brewing will be opening its third taproom, currently referred to as the “Durham Fun Zone,” in Downtown Durham in late 2018. The taproom will be located at 800 Taylor Street at the Golden Belt campus. Golden Belt is an historic 320,000 square foot mill that once housed textile and tobacco facilities, and is the only remaining 1900s-era conversion opportunity of its kind in the area.

Hi-Wire’s new taproom will consist of 8,844 square feet of interior space, as well as a 1,678 square foot outdoor covered patio and beer garden. Dubbed the “Durham Fun Zone,” the space will be game and activity heavy, featuring full-sized shuffleboard courts, soccer pool tables, table tennis, and more. The bar’s 24 taps will feature Hi-Wire’s full line-up of beers, including year-round, seasonal, specialty, sour, and one-offs, as well as wine, local cider, and guest taps from neighboring Durham breweries. Space will be dedicated to a potential pilot brewing system in the future.

Strategic growth has always been a part of the Hi-Wire vision.

Co-owner, Adam Charnack reflects on where Hi-Wire Brewing started just five years ago and notes, “the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill Triangle is Hi-Wire’s second-largest market behind Western North Carolina, and one of the first we ever distributed to. We’ve felt for some time like it’s a second home to us, and we’ve been looking for ways to root ourselves in the community. So while a taproom outside of our two primary breweries wasn’t necessarily part of our Day-One-Business-Plan, we’ve realized how important it is both for Hi-Wire and for our fans to have more ways to connect with the brewery. We’ve been looking for the right opportunity for some time now, and feel as though we’ve really nailed it with our new Durham spot. Hopefully our customers will appreciate and understand our commitment to the area, and either take their love of Hi-Wire to the next level, or, if they’re not really familiar with us just yet, get to know Hi-Wire for the first time – both in our new taproom but also at bars, restaurants, and retail outlets in the community.”

The goal is to open by end of October 2018, but as we all know, construction can have a mind of its own. With that in mind, Hi-Wire Brewing will be regularly updating their website and social media with formal announcements regarding construction, hiring, an opening date, etc. For the most up to date information, please visit hiwirerewing.com or follow them on social media at @hiwirebrewing.

Creature Comforts Opens Second Brewing Facility

June 28, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

ATHENS, Georgia – Shortly after celebrating its fourth anniversary, Creature Comforts Brewing Company announced the grand opening of its second facility. The brewery celebrated the official opening of the production facility at Southern Mill on June 11, 2018.

Creature Comforts announced the expansion plans in January 2017, broke ground in May 2017, and began initial production at the facility in March 2018. In order to maintain a close distance to its downtown location, and with the assistance and cooperation of the Athens-Clarke County government, the brewery selected the historic Southern Mill complex off North Chase Street to house the second facility. Originally built in 1900, the mill is being redeveloped into a mixed-use development. The brewery committed to preserving as much of the character of the building as possible during the reconstruction and was the recipient of a 2018 Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation Award in the category of Adaptive Reuse. Creature Comforts worked with local companies, Studio BNA Architects and Grahl Construction on the facility.

“We never expected that two years into opening our doors we would have a need to start working on building a new brewery,” said CEO Chris Herron. “However, two years later we are extremely grateful to have it come online as our existing brewery had been operating at maximum capacity for fifteen months. We are excited to have the opportunity to both increase the quality and the quantity of our beer, to create jobs, and to reinvest right here in Athens.”

Creature Comforts invested $11 million into the 40,000-square-foot historic building, which houses new state-of-the-art equipment including a fully automated dual 85-barrel brewhouse from German manufacturer Steinecker, a 24-head rotary filler for canning manufactured by Krones, and 50,000 barrels worth of initial annual fermentation capacity. Continuing in its commitment to quality, Creature Comforts also invested nearly a quarter of a million dollars into a quality laboratory onsite.

The initial focus of the new brewery is on production, with plans for a tasting room in the future. The technology of the equipment has greatly increased the efficiency of Creature Comforts’ production and packaging. The canning line averages 185 cans packaged per minute, in comparison to 40 cans per minute the brewery packages with its canning line in the Snow Tire facility. At the new production brewery, a 340-barrrel batch of the brewery’s year-round IPA, Tropicália, is brewed in 16-17 hours, while at the downtown location a 120-barrel batch of Tropicália is brewed in 20 hours. With the increased capacity and efficiency of the equipment, the brewery expects to make a significant increase on its presence in its current distribution footprint.

“The new facility we’ve built here at Southern Mill gives us the ultimate control to precisely make high quality beer exactly the way we want, with better shelf stability and with much greater efficiency,” said Brewmaster Adam Beauchamp. “Every system has been upgraded from water treatment to boilers all the way through to packaging. Sustainability was a big focus for us as we went through equipment selection and plant design. All in all, we believe the brewery we’ve built will allow us to provide our consumers with a product that they will consistently be happy with.”

The brewery celebrated the grand opening of Creature Comforts at Southern Mill on June 11 with a ribbon cutting joined by Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission. For more information on Creature Comforts Brewing Company visit www.creaturecomfortsbeer.com.

Sesh Beer Fest Meets Underground Music Showcase in the Rocky Mountains

June 27, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

DENVER, Colorado — When the Underground Music Showcase (UMS) returns July 27-29 the music festival will feature more stages, including three additional outdoor stages: Sesh Stage presented by Two Parts, Imagination Stage presented by 303 Magazine and Comedy Stage presented by Illegal Pete’s. The Main Stage presented by Terrapin Care Station will return to its past location at Goodwill and act as the epicenter for the largest indie music festival in the Rocky Mountains.

Renowned Denver beer festival Sesh Fest is expanding with a new home and will become part of the 18th annual UMS. The session beer festival will now have its own area within the music festival, named Sesh Stage. The stage will be located just off of 4th Avenue and Broadway, inside of the Fentress Architects’ satellite lot on South Broadway, during all three days of UMS. The stage will spill over to another lot behind the building to create the ideal Sesh Fest location with plenty of space.

“Sesh Fest is one of our favorite events of the summer, and we’ve always dreamed of going bigger with the festival. When we took over UMS, it was a no-brainer to bring the festival into the fold as Sesh Stage,” said Casey Berry, founder of Two Parts, the experiential event agency behind UMS and Sesh Fest. “The beauty of Sesh Fest was that it was about hanging with friends and discovering new breweries — rather than nerding out over super rare beer. We’ll carry this vibe into UMS with an area where guests can chill, imbibe with easily drinkable craft beers and discover incredible music in our summer oasis.”

UMS and 303 Magazine have also announced their partnership for “The Underground” and the Imagination Stage. The Underground is an unique festival experience that will alert attendees about surprise happenings surrounding UMS, including surprise sets, giveaway opportunities and pop-up parties. Attendees can sign up at http://ums.303magazine.com/ to receive alerts on The Underground. The Imagination Stage, located between 3rd Avenue and 2nd Avenue at the Import Warehouse, will feature immersive art and music experiences.

Illegal Pete’s will host the Comedy Stage featuring performances by local and national comedians. Indoor stage locations include Moe’s Original BBQ, Banded Oak Brewing, Baere Brewing Company, Punch Bowl Social, The Hornet, Blue Ice Lounge, South Broadway Christian Church, Metropolis Coffee, Sputnik, Hi-Dive, The Irish Rover, 3 Kings, Ross-Broadway Branch Library, Skylark Lounge, Gary Lee’s Motor Club & Grub and The Denver Distillery.

More than 175 musical acts have been announced for UMS, including over a dozen headliners like Alvvays, Deerhunter and Digable Planets in addition to other supporting acts. White Denim and the Hot 8 Brass Band recently were added to the lineup. The final lineup will be announced on Thursday, June 28th at 10 a.m. MST at https://www.undergroundmusicshowcase.com/lineup.

Hood River, Oregon – pFriem Family Brewers welcomes summer with a full summer beer release lineup, highlighted by three Classic Summer Seasonals: Jammy Pale, Golden IPA and Mexican Lager. Each pairs beautifully with the flavors of summer – fresh off the grill or fresh off the trails.

pFriem is known for its extensive line of artisan beers, totaling over 100 in 2018. Its summer lineup includes a myriad of delicious new releases with Jammy Pale, Golden IPA and Mexican Lager among its crowning achievements.

Jammy Pale is rife with aromas of marionberries, strawberry preserves, candied pineapple, and peach, and round notes of cantaloupe, blueberries, gummy bears, and lemon balm. It finishes juicy, jammy, and fruity. 5.4% ABV and 32 IBUs. Jammy Pale is built on a round malt bill where Rahr 2-Row Pale is supported by malted and unmalted oats. It showcases a blend of very fruit-forward American hops. The jammy and tropical hops are further supported by a fruity English yeast strain. Enjoy with fish or al pastor tacos, ceviche or sweet and spicy dishes like Vietnamese chicken wings, Korean ribs, and green curry.

Golden IPA is a bright and vibrant West Coast IPA. Fruity aromas of watermelon, citrus, papaya, and lychee fruit, accompany jammy notes of honeydew melon, kiwi, ripe raspberries, and honey. It finishes with a tropical citrus zing that will have you rushing down to pFriem to stake your claim today. This beer has a simple of malt bill of 2 Row Pale Malt, which makes a great base for aromatic and juicy El Dorado and Oregon Amarillo hops. ABV 6.8%, IBU 50. Enjoy with rich and hearty burgers, French fries and complex pizzas. Aged cheddar cheese, aged meats, and pickled vegetables. Indian cuisine that is spice forward and balanced by yogurt and cream based sauces.

Mexican Lager pFriem loves Mexican Lagers, so we brewed our own! Our light and crisp reinvention is brewed with malted barley and flaked maize, and aromas of orange blossom and a faraway Mexican beach. Just add a squeeze of lime and table salt and enjoy! Gambrinus Pilsner, Flaked Maize, Carafoam and Acidulated Malts combine with Perle, Czech Saaz, Tettnang Hops and Lager yeast for this Mexican delight. ABV 4.4%, IBU 17. Bootstrap Brewing Company Partners with Advisory Firm to Secure Capital Investment

June 26, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

NIWOT, Colorado — Bootstrap Brewing Company (“Bootstrap”), one of the fastest growing and most dynamic regional craft brewers in the U.S. has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with InterContinental Beverage Capital Inc.(“IBC”), which will assist in capital formation and strategic industry guidance. IBC is a New York-based advisory and investment firm with representative offices in Atlanta, Boca Raton, Los Angeles, and Lugano, Switzerland.

Founded in 2012, by Leslie and Steve Kaczeus, Bootstrap Brewing is a craft brewery established in Niwot, Colorado. Since its inception, it has expanded its business and consumer reach by creating a series of unique and distinguished craft beers. Bootstrap’s original release, Insane Rush, and the more recent Wreak Havoc are runaway successes in the Denver/Boulder market as well as in the mountain areas of Colorado. A master craft brewer, Steve’s recipes have won numerous awards in multiple craft beer competitions over the last few years.

A significant step in its development came in 2016 when Bootstrap was brought on by Coors Distributing Company and offered for sale across its territory. As of this release, Bootstrap had grown sales to over 5,000 bbl. annualized.

The dynamics in the craft beer industry are rapidly changing. Growth is slowing, and over-reaching expansion is getting being penalized. Steve and Leslie believe a strategy focused on its proven quality beer, regionally marketed to increase consumer loyalty and enthusiasm is the path to take in order to ensure the brand’s long-term health and viability. As such, that is exactly how they have positioned Bootstrap.

Steve and Leslie offered “the immediate goal will be to secure sufficient capital to allow Bootstrap to upgrade its operations, expand its footprint, continue its growth and to ensure that Bootstrap becomes the most sought-after and recognized craft beer in the region. “

IBC Partners, John Accardo, Joe Messina and former Coca-Cola and Coors executive Stephen Horgan will be actively working on the project. Colorado-based, Accardo a former Brown Brown-Forman executive, stated “IBC feels Bootstrap is perfectly positioned to build its footprint in the Colorado, Intermountain market and beyond. Horgan offered that “IBC has been looking for the right partner in the craft segment that matches its priorities and values. We think we have found it in Bootstrap. Leslie and Steve have done an outstanding job in just 6 years.”

For 2018, Bootstrap Brewing has forecasted continued aggressive growth with its current distribution partners and plans to sign additional distributors to handle the mountain regions of Colorado. The company will continue to grow production to achieve an estimated 8,000 bbl. this year.
