Russian River to Release Pliny the Younger Bottles in February

December 27, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

This February, we celebrate the 16th annual winter release of our popular Triple IPA, Pliny the Younger. Always released the first Friday in February (rain or shine, but mostly rain), Younger will be available at both brewpubs February 7th-20th, 2020. Each year thousands of visitors from all over the world descend upon Santa Rosa, and our new Windsor location as of last year, to enjoy not only Pliny the Younger but other popular Russian River brews like our barrel-aged sours, Blind Pig IPA and our flagship Pliny the Elder. In 2019, the Sonoma County Economic Development Board conducted a study which determined that the two-week release saw visitors from 42 states and 14 countries and contributed $4.16M to the local economy!

It is important for us to find ways to add to our guests’ experience, especially for those who come year after year. We are excited to announce that Pliny the Younger 2020 will include something we have never done before, and said we would likely never do. For the first time ever, Pliny the Younger will be available in our signature 510ml bottles during the release at both our Santa Rosa and Windsor breweries! Each guest will be able to buy 2 bottles which we can track by a fourth tab on the wristband they receive upon entering the pubs. Pliny the Younger bottles will only be available to guests who come for the full experience in our brewpubs and will not be sold in the gift shops. Younger bottles will also not be distributed, while draft distribution begins the second week of February.

Also new this year is an exclusive Pliny the Younger preview beer dinner which sold out in a matter of hours! We will definitely be doing that again next year. And a generous pour of Pliny the Younger will be offered again on our guided tours now booking on the brewery’s website. For more information regarding the beer, the man, and the release, check out our website russianriverbrewing.com.

Sasquatch Brewing Creates Simple Straightforward Beers People Love

December 21, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

Looking for a brewery with community and great beers? Look no further than Sasquatch Brewing Company, located in Hillsdale, Oregon. Found in 2011 by Oregon natives Tom Sims and Alex Beard, Sasquatch is doing what they know best, making delicious beers in simple form.

“We try to have a good selection. We have a couple of lagers, a couple of hazies, a little of everything for everyone,” says Head Brewer Ryan Nicolai who has been with the brewery since 2015. With the ever-evolving craft beer industry, crazy ingredients, recipes, and barrel aged beers, it’s a breath of fresh air to find a brewery nailing the original styles of beer.
Woodboy is the breweries flagship IPA. It’s a pure West Coast IPA made with centennial, citra, and cascade hops. “We have a lot of people that come in specifically for that beer,” says Ryan. Being such a community focal point the brewery does a little bit of everything well, as far as beers go. They brew a lot of beer specifically for the Hillsdale location to keep the regulars happy.

In April of 2017 the brewery opened the doors to a second home, in the Northwest industrial district of Portland. This facility is complete with a 15 barrel system, as well as, a 100 barrel cider brewing system. Opening this second location gave Sasquatch the opportunity to dip their feet in the cider world.

The original location in Hillsdale is right down the road from where Tom and Ryan grew up. They both feel a strong responsibility to help support the neighborhood. Stop in any given night, you might find them donating 15% of profits to Wilson High School, the elementary school down the road, the Jewish community center, or even Water Watch.

With the self made trend of lagers, coming in hot right now, Ryan says they will be doing a fair amount of those in 2020. “That’s what a lot of people are asking for,” says Ryan. Walk into Sasquatch Brewing and grab a brew to taste the humble and satisfying craft beers. They are doing it right by staying true to who they are, true to craft beer, and producing some of the greatest classics.

Wachusett, Wormtown, and Greater Good Collaborate on Worcester’s Bravest Beer with Proceeds Going to Fallen Firefighter’s Family

December 17, 2019 by Andrew Innes

“We said the last time we made this beer together that hopefully we would never have to do it again” said Christian McMahan, President of Wachusett Brewing Company. “However, when we have the ability to make a difference and support something so meaningful, we will do it each and every time.”

“We’re a tightly bound community” added Paul Wengender, Founder & President of Greater Good. “The strength of our community was tested, yet again. If one of our own goes down we will always rally together in vigorous support”

Lift Bridge Brewing Company and 93X Collaborate on Half-Assed IPA

December 17, 2019 by Andrew Innes

STILLWATER, Minn. — Lift Bridge Brewing Company, Stillwater’s first craft brewery since Prohibition, announced today the launch of its second collaboration with 93X, the Half-Assed IPA. A portion of profits from the sale of the beer will benefit Minnesota-based 23rd Veteran, a nonprofit organization using brain science, evolutionary theory, positive trigger re-association and positive psychology to assist veterans leaving the military and those who never properly transitioned.

Named after the popular Twin Cities radio station’s morning show, the 93X Half-Assed IPA is an American India pale ale featuring a burst of citrusy hops without being bitter or heavy. At 4.5% ABV and rated to 53 IBU, this brew is the perfect session IPA to rock you all night long. This is the second beer that Lift Bridge and 93X have launched together following the release of American lager 93X Brotherhood in 2016.

“We’ve teamed up yet again with 93X to combine all of our efforts to brew up something Half-Assed,” said Brad Glynn, vice president of marketing and co-founder of Lift Bridge Brewing Company. “Giving back to the community is an important part of Lift Bridge’s mission, and supporting 23rd Veteran through the sale of this beer makes our team and our consumers proud to call themselves beer drinkers.”

“We have thoroughly enjoyed our partnership with Lift Bridge not only on the products we have collaborated on, but the causes they go to,” said Graham Swart, 93X promotions director. “We’re excited to start this new chapter with 23rd Veteran, not only through this beer, but by creating events that will contribute to their cause as well.”

23rd Veteran has close ties to the Metro area, actively participating in community gatherings and hosting their own events, including the popular Nearly Naked Ruck March in Minneapolis in late October. With the rise of conflicts in the Middle East, military-based charities continue to evolve with the needs of veterans. Many soldiers deal with mental illnesses associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and an estimated 22 veterans commit suicide every day. Because there are no active large-scale conflicts currently, attention needs to be given to helping the soldiers who were in active combat during the Gulf Wars and other conflicts in the Middle East.

“23rd Veteran is ecstatic about becoming the beneficiary of the historic partnership between one of Minnesota’s oldest breweries and the Twin Cities’ best morning show,” said founder Mike Waldron. “Half-Assed IPA helps fund our impactful programs, and gives our veterans and graduates the opportunity to hang out with the influencers and listeners of 93x and Lift Bridge Brewery.”

On Saturday, January 18 at the Stillwater taproom, Lift Bridge, 93X and 23rd Veteran will host the Half-Assed IPA release party, featuring Midwest All Star Wrestling matches and special giveaways for attendees.

Lift Bridge beers, hard seltzers and sodas can be found throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin, and in Eastern North Dakota. To learn more about Lift Bridge Brewing Company, visit www.liftbridgebrewery.com.

Harpoon Brewery, Samuel Adams, Kevin Youkilis and More Announce #Pints4Pete Fundraiser

December 15, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

Kevin Youkilis, former Boston Red Sox infielder and owner of Loma Brewing Company, put out the call and craft breweries are answering. Join Boston breweries Harpoon and Sam Adams to raise a pint in celebration of the life and lasting impact of Pete Frates. Today, $1 per pint sold will be donated to the Peter Frates Family Foundation in support of #Pints4Pete.

Wild Leap to Release Volume Ten of Alpha Abstraction Double IPA Series

December 15, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

LAGRANGE, Georgia — Wild Leap is excited to announce the release of the tenth edition of their wildly popular Alpha Abstraction Double IPA series. The entire Wild Leap team agrees that this is the best of the series so far, and Alpha Abstraction lovers won’t want to miss this delicious volume of one of their favorite beers.

Since the Alpha Abstraction series was created to explore hop varieties and experiment with flavor profiles, brewers saw the tenth volume as an exciting opportunity. “Because it’s the tenth in the series, we wanted to make it special,” explains Chris Elliott, Wild Leap’s Chief Brewing Officer. “We definitely saved some hop ideas that we’ve had for a while.”

Volume Ten features a combo of two hop varieties, Strata and Cashmere. The hops were chosen not just by their strain, but carefully selected right down to the specific lot for qualities the brewers sought. The Cashmere is a citrus flavor that was described by the grower as a “Sunny D aroma” and the Strata strain brings a passion fruit flavor. The team worked to find the perfect blend of citrus notes they love and different tropical fruit notes that weren’t found in previous volumes. They knew when they’d found the perfect balance.

“Everyone at the brewery considers this to be their favorite of the series,” Elliott says. “It has a little bit of everything… it’s a little bit sweet, it’s slightly tart, and not too bitter. It’s a nicely balanced beer.”

As with all volumes of the series, Alpha Abstraction Volume 10 will only be available for a short time.

Gilman Brewing Announces New Daly City Taproom

December 13, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

Berkeley, California –  Brewing out of a 9,000 square feet former automotive radiator shop converted into a state-of-the-art production brewery and taproom in West Berkeley, Gilman Brewing Company expands to a second location with a new taproom and gastropub now open in Daly City (2001 Junipero Serra Blvd). Gilman Brewing’s Daly City taproom is conveniently located one block south of the Daly City BART station and next to the Century 20 movie theater. In early 2020, Gilman Brewing is set to open its third taproom on Main Street in downtown Pleasanton, California.

Opening on Berkeley’s thoroughfare Gilman Street in 2015, Gilman Brewing has amassed a rabid following of craft beer fans through its hard work and grit churning out an exceptional lineup of rotating beers. Gilman Brewing thrives as one of the top East Bay craft breweries with its premium IPAs, double IPAs, hazy IPAs, tart sours, fruit-forward beers, and a distinguished roster of singular California-inspired Belgian and saison styles. Its farmhouse ales and saisons are Gilman’s most decorated beers, winning awards across the country.

In 2019 alone, Gilman has garnered more than 16 medals including five Gold medals at the California Craft Brewers Cup, California State Fair Commercial Craft Beer Competition, NorCal Brew Competition Sonoma County Fair, and USA Beer Ratings. At the New York International Beer Competition 2019, Gilman took home the highly coveted award for “California American IPA Brewery of the Year” (in 2018, the brewery won “California Saison Brewery of the Year”).

Gilman Brewing has bootstrapped its operations from the opening of its West Berkeley taproom all the way to its beers now being available at the finest Bay Area establishments, including A16, Millennium, Hilton SF, Sessions at the Presidio, The Good Hop, Grand Lake Kitchen, Whole Foods Market, Zachary’s Chicago Pizza, and hundreds of others. Built with working-class ethos and a dedication to brewing sophisticated beers, Gilman Brewing is a fiery underdog putting the East Bay beer scene on the map along with an array of its craft contemporaries.

Owner/Brewmaster/Builder Sean Wells and his laid-back crew of brewers, bartenders, musicians, and builders are devoted to taking the pretension out of craft brewing with a beer lineup representing its blue-collar spirit and fascination of workin’ on cars, motorcycles, metal, and wailin’ on Johnny Cash songs with the house band while on break at the brewery. With beer names such as Satan Is My Motor, Quarter Panel, Antifreeze, Fuzzy Dice, Dashboard Jesus, Bad Tattoo, and Autoshop IPA, Gilman Brewing puts their heart into each and every beer they brew for California’s discerning beer community.

Featuring light fixtures, taps and trim handcrafted by Sean and the crew back at the brewery in Berkeley, the 2,900 square feet Daly City location features a farm-to-table food menu developed by Executive Chef Kurt Steeber, formerly a chef at Zuni Café. Every item is prepped in-house, with locally sourced and organic ingredients featured whenever possible. Just like their focus on handcrafting only the finest brews, the Daly City crew produces artisanal sausage and butchers fresh calamari — they even grind their own hamburger by hand.

Similar to the extra time they take carefully fermenting their award-winning saisons, the Neapolitan-inspired pizza dough at Gilman Brewing — Daly City undergoes an extra-long 72 hour delayed fermentation (for pizzas such as Wild Mushroom, Fennel Sausage, Bianca, Margherita, Ice Cube) and takes center stage on the menu alongside a cast of Northern-Italian and modern American small plates, sandwiches, and burgers (Short Rib Burger, Salmon Rillettes, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Fishwich, Grilled Cheese). Rounding out the menu is an array of salads and snacks (Kale, Baby Beets, Cobb, Caesar, Buffalo Wings, Chicken Liver Mousse, Bruschetta Prosciutto, Melted Skillet Caciocavallo Cheese). 20 rotating Gilman beers on draught as well as a sophisticated wine list, guest taps for cider, beer, and kombucha are available daily. Beer to go is available with growler fills and cans of special taproom-only releases.

A resident of Daly City, Sean Wells comments, “We’re super excited to be the first and only craft brewery to open a taproom/restaurant in Daly City. The community here needs a gathering place for great locally brewed craft beer. Living here in Daly City, it personally means a lot to me for the city to finally have fresh beer available at the level that Northern California beer aficionados have come to expect. Gilman Brewing is now here in Daly City to fulfill that need. We’ll also open an adjacent 400 square feet enclosed heated outdoor patio before the end of the year that we’re thrilled to be able to offer locals.”

For more information regarding Gilman Brewing Company, please visit: gilmanbrew.com

About Gilman Brewing Company
Established in 2015, co-founders, veterinary orthopedic surgeons, and seasoned brewers Sean Wells and Tim Sellmeyer, as well as their best friend and professional musician John Schuman, opened Gilman Brewing’s production brewery and taproom on the bustling Gilman Street in West Berkeley. Situated next door to the historic non-profit music venue 924 Gilman, Gilman Brewing Company brews beers with distinction for California craft beer fans while having loads of fun along the way. With almost 40 years of brewing experience between them, Sean and Tim found a common love for the nuanced, complex flavors of Belgian Farmhouse ales.

Together, the three friends transformed an old automotive repair shop with their own hands into the Berkeley brewery so many people enjoy today. They are a hands-on crew; no fancy suits or outside investors here. They build it themselves and fix it when it breaks…turns out they also love breaking things — especially common misconceptions about one of their favorite beer styles: saisons!

Gilman Brewing Company rotates 35 seasonal and annual beers throughout the year available both on draught and select special releases in 16 oz. cans. The 3,000 barrels of annual production is served fresh at its West Berkeley taproom and new Daly City taproom/restaurant located at 2001 Junipero Serra Blvd. In early 2020, Gilman Brewing will open a third taproom at 706 Main Street in Pleasanton, CA as well as expand its Gilman Street location from 9,000 to 13,800 square feet. Hundreds of restaurants, bars, and stores serve Gilman Brewing beers throughout the state of California.

Gilman Brewing has been awarded upwards of 30 medals (including 10 Gold medals) at renowned California, New York, and national craft beer competitions. Gilman Brewing is the recipient of two highly acclaimed awards, “California American IPA Brewery of the Year” (2019 New York International Beer Competition) and “California Saison Brewery of the Year” (2018 New York International Beer Competition). Gilman Brewing has taken home medals at California Craft Brewers Cup, California State Fair Commercial Craft Beer Competition, NorCal Brew Competition Sonoma County Fair, and USA Beer Ratings.

When not brewing their idiosyncratic beers, Sean and his team can be found performing live music in their adjacent barrel-aging room or workin’ on one of their never-ending projects expanding the brewery, installing larger fermenters, welding tap handles or trim for the taproom, or wrenching on their handbuilt ’69 Triumph chopper and the iconic company mascot ’66 Chevy pickup.
