Loose Cannon Brewery and Heavy Seas Brewery Establish Trademark Agreements in the UK and EU

May 29, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

ABINGDON, United Kingdom — The Loose Cannon Brewery of Abingdon, UK has recently established trademark agreement with Heavy Seas Beer of Baltimore, Maryland as Heavy Seas moves towards selling their beers in the UK and Europe.

Heavy Seas’ flagship brand, Loose Cannon IPA, was potentially going to create confusion with the Loose Cannon Brewery. Happily, the Trademark ownership and use issue has now been fully resolved with Loose Cannon taking over the ownership of the UK trade mark and subsequently granting a license for use to Heavy Seas Beer in the UK. Heavy Seas has granted a mirror license to the Loose Cannon Brewery for the use of the Trademark in the EU.

This equitable solution to what could have been an extended and litigious dispute, is testament that communication is key in these types of matters and sets a positive example to others in the craft brewing industry. In an addition to this outcome, it is hoped that the links between the two breweries will begin to flourish with some planned future projects.

To mark what has been a successful outcome, the two brewers will produce a collaboration brew in 2019 at the Loose Cannon Brewery in Abingdon to introduce Heavy Seas beers to the UK market.

The brewer of Heavy Seas Beer, Clipper City Brewing Co, was advised by Exeter-based Stephens Scown LLP. Loose Cannon Brewing Company was advised by London-based CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP.

About Loose Cannon Brewing Company
Loose Cannon was founded in 2010 reviving the brewing industry in Abingdon-on-Thames, a town famous for its beers for centuries. The brewery produces 18 cask ales (a mix of full time, seasonal and one-off monthly beers) and 6 kegged beers for the on trade as well as three bottled and three canned beers for the off trade. Loose Cannon have won a total of 20 brewing awards from SIBA and CAMRA including four national brewing awards.

About Heavy Seas Beer
Heavy Seas Beer was founded by Hugh Sisson in 1995 and has grown the business to become one of the most respected and award-winning craft breweries on the east coast of the United States. As the first pub brewer in Maryland, Hugh was responsible for the legislation that made brewpubs legal in the state. Now over two decades later, Heavy Seas is celebrating its 23rd year of brewing independent craft beer in Baltimore. The brewery also continues to expand its beer portfolio, now producing 23 different beer styles and distributing to 20 states as well as Washington D.C. Heavy Seas was also named Beer Connoisseur Magazine’s 2017 Brewery of the Year.

Just In Time for Summer, Wild Leap Releases Bomb Pop Double IPA

May 29, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

Wild Leap is kicking off the summer with the release of Bomb Pop, the second beer in the Truck Chaser Double IPA series. Brewed with a flavor combination containing notes of cherry, lime and raspberry, this mouthwatering beer is designed to take you back to the ‘popsicle days’ of your childhood. Bomb Pop Double IPA will be available in the market starting the first week of June.

“We can all remember the excitement of hearing the ice cream truck coming down the road,” shares Rob Goldstein, Wild Leap co-founder. “The nostalgic red, white and blue popsicle takes you back to those simple, joyful moments of being a kid, when you didn’t have a care in the world. We wanted to take these flavors of childhood and brew them into a juicy double IPA we can enjoy today.”

With the previous releases in their Alpha Abstraction series and the first edition of the Truck Chaser series, Wild Leap has developed a reputation as one of the industry-leaders of juicy double IPAs. Bomb Pop promises to fall right in line with a perfect blend of tart and sweet, coupled with a creamy, milkshake flavor.

Earlier this spring, Wild Leap announced the expansion of their production capacity by adding several new fermentation tanks to their brewhouse. “The addition of these tanks allows us to not only brew more of our core favorites, but also to experiment and brew creative beers,” shares head brewer, Chris Elliott. “Beer is designed to be fun, and the Truck Chaser series has been an opportunity for us to experiment with delicious, nostalgic flavors.”

Similar to the first release in the Truck Chaser series, Bomp Pop Double IPA will be sold in four packs, and will only be available for a short time. For information about Wild Leap or to request samples for review, please reach out to media@wildleap.com.

Brewed in the spirit of juicy IPAs, Mucho Lupu features four types of American hops: Mosaic, Azacca, Simcoe, and Amarillo. Great Lakes Brewing Collaborates with O.A.R on ‘The Mighty Lager’

May 27, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

CLEVELAND — Great Lakes Brewing Co. (GLBC) announces the creation of The Mighty Lager, a limited edition Session Amber Lager brewed in collaboration with rock band O.A.R.  The light, toasty, encore worthy beer named for the band’s 2019 album The Mighty, will be available in 16 oz. cans throughout Northeast Ohio and at select O.A.R shows this summer.

The collaboration developed organically when a GLBC Columbus sales rep and O.A.R fan discovered the band’s desire to create their own beer with the right partner. After conversations between the band and GLBC over a few pints, collaborating just felt right. “We have a lot in common,” said Bridget Barrett, GLBC’s VP of Sales & Marketing. “Music and beer are already a perfect pairing, and our shared history of craftsmanship, storytelling, building communities, and making people happy make this a feelgood partnership.”

Members of the band visited Great Lakes Brewing Co. in March to meet with Brewmaster Mark Hunger and Pub Brewer Steve Forman to develop the beer’s flavor profile and sample a small test batch. The band returned in May to help brew The Mighty Lager which will be canned at Great Lakes Brewing Co. this June. O.A.R saxophonist and guitarist Jerry DePizzo said of the collaboration, “We set out to create a very drinkable beer that everyone can enjoy, especially with friends. The Mighty Lager is certainly worthy of the name, and perfect for the tailgate, backyard bbq, and summertime concert. The only thing better than the beer at Great Lakes Brewing is the people who make it.”

The Mighty Lager is a light, smooth sessionable amber lager with toasty malt flavors and a clean finish. Already known for brewing award winning lagers like their iconic Dortmunder Gold Lager, GLBC wanted to join O.A.R in creating the ideal summer tour companion. Its lower alcohol content and crushability make The Mighty Lager a great summer sipper. Brewer Mark Hunger notes that this brew is deceptively complex. “It’s light and drinkable, but still packs a ton of rich malt flavor and a pleasant hop aroma.”

The Mighty Lager will be available for a limited time at select Northeast Ohio retailers beginning this June, in 16 oz. can 4-Packs packaged in Cleveland by GLBC and Iron Heart Canning Co. The Mighty Lager cans will available at select O.A.R tour stops all summer long. Cans will feature artwork from O.A.R’s 9th full-length album The Mighty, which released on March 29, 2019.

The Mighty Lager:
ABV: 4.5% | IBU: 20
Flavor: Smooth, light, and refreshing with toasty malt flavors
Package: 4-Pack 16 oz. Cans
Availability: Limited. Available starting June, 2019 at the GLBC gift shop, select Ohio retailers, and participating O.A.R tour venues.

Coronado Brewing Releases Salt Spray Sour Margarita Gose

May 23, 2019 by Dow Scoggins

SAN DIEGO – Coronado Brewing Company is releasing the second of its 2019 Art Series cans, with Salt Spray Sour. The company is proud to support emerging artists by featuring a fan-submitted Instagram photo on each of its quarterly releases. The company’s first release, Cosmic Ocean Brut IPA, was incredibly well-received, and was even named one of the “30 Best Looking Beer Cans in America—2019.”  The winning photo for this second release was shot by ocean and surf photographer, Ryan Szot, of Cardiff By the Sea, California. The photo features an aerial shot of a surfer in turquoise blue waters and perfectly captures the refreshing nature of the liquid inside the can.

Salt Spray Sour was inspired by warm summers in San Diego, and the desire for an easy-drinking beer for the season.

“We thought the gose-style would be perfect for summer because its tart but not too sour, and the touch of sea salt makes you want to take another sip,” said Shawn Steele, director of brewing operations, Coronado Brewing Company. “The lime, paired with the salt, makes this our fun interpretation of a margarita. We can’t wait for people to try it!” says Steele. Salt Spray Sour Margarita Gose pushes the boundaries on the style, coming in at 6.0% ABV, while maintaining its drinkability.

Salt Spray Sour will debut at Coronado Brewing’s three locations on Friday, May 24, in 16 oz. 4-pack cans and on draft. The beer will hit broader retail availability at the end of the month and will be available throughout Coronado’s distribution network. As part of the launch, Coronado is partnering with Mix it Up San Diego to recreate Szot’s photo for an interactive sip & paint party at the Tasting Room. For more information about Salt Spray Sour and the Sip & Paint event, visit coronadobrewing.com.

Cosmic Ocean Brut IPA
Style: Margarita Gose Sour Ale

  • ABV: 6.0%
  • IBU:   7
  • Package: 16 oz. can four packs, draft
  • Release: Late May 2019

About Coronado Brewing Company
In 1996, when craft beer was still a foreign term and San Diego County was home to only a handful of breweries, the Chapman brothers Ron and Rick opened a brewpub in their hometown of Coronado. Today CBC stays true to its San Diego roots, brewing abundantly hoppy West Coast-style ales, which are available today in 14 US states and 12 countries. In addition to the long-established pub in Coronado, the company opened a tasting room inside its San Diego production facility in 2013, and a tasting room and restaurant in Imperial Beach, California in 2014. Coronado Brewing Company was honored in 2014 with one of the brewing industry’s most prestigious awards—World Beer Cup Champion Brewery and Brewmaster for a Mid-Size Brewing Company.
