meetNKY and Braxton Brewing Co. Announce Limited-Edition Dark Charge Variant Collaboration with The B-Line

November 29, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Braxton BrewingCOVINGTON, Kentucky – meetNKY, the Northern Kentucky Convention and Visitors Bureau, and The B-Line, a collection of Bourbon Trail distilleries and bourbon forward bars and restaurants in Northern Kentucky, have partnered with Braxton Brewing Co. for the brewery’s famous Dark Charge event. The winter block party takes place from 3 – 11 p.m. Friday, December 2 and 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Saturday, December 3.

The organizations have partnered on a limited-edition Dark Charge variant, Chocolate Pretzel Bourbon Ball Imperial Stout, which is only available for purchase onsite during the now two-day event. Bourbon aficionados and beer enthusiasts alike can enjoy this rich, imperial stout, aged in bourbon barrels from three distillers along The B-Line – Old Pogue Distillery, New Riff Distilling and Boone County Distillery – finished off with hints of cacao nibs and pretzels.

“This year’s Dark Charge event is a full-on, two-day collision of beer and bourbon,” said co-founder and CEO of Braxton, Jake Rouse. “There’s no surprise that the crossover between bourbon and craft beer is a quickly emerging trend, so when we approached our annual Bourbon Barrel Aged beer release Dark Charge we knew we wanted to play into this crossover. Additionally, partnering with meetNKY and The B-Line® on this event allows us to fully showcase all that our region has to offer on a national level.”

Attendees will also be able to enjoy the new B-Line Lounge in the brewery’s loft space during the event. All three distillers will have booths in the lounge where they’ll be pulling bourbon tastings from the barrel and serving them alongside another holiday staple – bourbon balls.

“Nothing speaks to the uniqueness of our region like a fusion of bourbon and beer,” said Jay Erisman, co-founder of New Riff Distilling. “We’re excited to partner with Braxton on this limited-edition B-Line® brew and to tap into the beer enthusiasts who are curious to learn more about bourbon.”

2022 Dark Charge Variants

In 2022, Braxton plans to release seven variants of its beloved Dark Charge Imperial Stout. So far, the brewery has announced and released for sale:

Dark Charge Imperial Stout – The original bourbon barrel aged imperial stout, serves as the base for the other variants with an 12.6% ABV.

Dark Charge Triple Vanilla Stout – This variant, selected by the Braxton Builders, features Madagascar bourbon, with Tahitian and Indonesian vanilla with an 12.7% ABV.

Dark Charge Maple Pecan – This variant features warm, nutty hints of maple syrup and roasted Georgia pecans with an 13.1% ABV.

Dark Charge Cinnamon Whiskey – Nothing says Happy Holidays like cinnamon whiskey. This double barrel aged in Wild Turkey and cinnamon whiskey barrels, imperial stout has an inviting flavor reminiscent with tastes of the holidays and an 12.9% ABV.

Dark Charge Chocolate Pretzel Bourbon Ball Imperial Stout – Only available for sale at the event, this bourbon centric brew was aged in bourbon barrels from three distillers across The B-Line and finished off with hints of cocoa nibs and pretzels with an 13.3% ABV.

Additional Dark Charge variants will be announced on November 23 and 24. These collabs also tap other local staples for some iconic collaborations. Those curious to learn more can follow Braxton on Instagram and Facebook for these announcements.

Entertainment Lineup

To celebrate this year’s Dark Charge Winter Block Party expanding into a two-day event, Braxton is going bigger than ever with music and entertainment, pulling both local and nationally touring music artists. Open format DJ, DJ JAY KAY, will be playing on the main stage in a special all-day set, establishing a groove throughout Dark Charge Day. Additional acts include:

Friday, December 2

From 6 – 8 p.m., another well-known “progressive auditory ensemble” will take the stage. The final musical act will be announced on November 23.

From 9 – 11 p.m. nationally acclaimed MAGIC GIANT will take the main stage. The band has amassed over 60M streams and was named one of the “10 Artists You Need to Know” by Rolling Stone. In addition, MAGIC GIANT has played festivals such as Coachella, Firefly, BottleRock, Electric Forest and Lightning in a Bottle. Having shared the stage with the likes of Foster the People, The Lumineers, Vance Joy and Mumford & Sons, MAGIC GIANT has shown they are an alt powerhouse.

Saturday, December 3

From 3 – 5 p.m. Jake Speed & The Freddies will play a mix of traditional and original folk, country blues, and ragtime tunes that muse on Cincinnati’s unique past and present.

From 6 – 8 p.m. The Hot Magnolias, Cincinnati’s finest Creole/Cajun shake yo’ tail feather, wave your hanky New Orleans musical act, will take the stage.

Finally, from 9 – 11 p.m. Juice, a band from Boston blending rock, pop, R&B, and hip-hop will get crowds dancing with the diversity of their signature sound.

Dark Charge-Infused Bites

To complement the theme of the event, Braxton worked with seven local food vendors to create food that leverages Dark Charge for attendees to enjoy. These including  Dewey’s Pizza, Taco Fuerte, Rich’s Proper Food & Drink, The Empanada’s Box, Parts & Labor New School Barbecue, Smoke Justis and Coppin’s.

While the event is free to attend, two VIP experience options are available for purchase in various packages. The Dark Charge VIP Tickets are available as single day passes or two-day passes ranging from $90 to $175. Dark Charge Winter Block Party Igloobar Experiences are also available for private parties of up to eight ranging from $600 – $1,200.

“This event is a true celebration of all things Northern Kentucky,” said meetNKY President and CEO, Julie Kirkpatrick. “It’s been incredible to see how this winter block party has evolved over the years. We can’t wait to welcome music, bourbon and beer fans from across the country for this exciting two-day event in the Commonwealth and show off some of the southern hospitality we’re known for.”

Threes Brewing Releases Future Reference in Collaboration with Hudson Valley Brewery

November 29, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Threes BrewingBROOKLYN, New York –  Threes Brewing has just released Future Reference Oak Aged Franconian Dark Lager. Paying homage to the lagers crafted in this far north region of Germany, Future Reference is smooth drinking with woody undertones, thanks to six weeks spent in oak. Notes of freshly peeled birch bark, cocoa nibs, and distant vanilla shine, smoothed by signature Threes foudre character, in a package that finishes at just 4.8% ABV.

Future Reference is the latest of several collaborations with Hudson Valley Brewery, who shares Threes’ passion for sourcing small-batch ingredients and supporting local businesses. Malts from Stone Path Malt in Wareham, Massachusetts form the centerpiece of this lager, lending a dark, near-black hue, and a subtle hint of sweetness to the beer.

About Threes Brewing

Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to the First Responders Foundation.

Twenty-three collection sets will be available for $230 and include the following:

One additional “The Osopher NFT Bundle” collection set includes:

Both The Osopher expressions

Ralph Steadman tote bag

Ralph Steadman digital NFT artwork

In August 2022, Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey and Flying Dog Brewery launched their first joint limited edition product release collaboration, “The Osopher Project,” to celebrate their shared history and commemorate their founder George Stranahan.  The limited-edition whiskey sold out in 72 hours, with people lining up outside of the Stranahan’s distillery in Denver, Colorado, beginning at midnight on launch day. The limited-edition Flying Dog beer also immediately sold out at specific Maryland retailers. Both Stranahan’s and Flying Dog are excited to bring their partnership to the next level on a national scale –  an expansion truly dedicated to their dedicated fans.

About “The Osopher Project”

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey and Flying Dog Brewery have a shared connection, history, and founder; however, The Osopher Project, launched in the summer of 2022, marked the first joint product release for the two companies. This collaboration celebrates the intersection of George Stranahan’s accomplishments as a distiller and brewer. The resulting beer and whiskey is a true testament to the art, science, and creativity on which George built both companies. The Osopher speaks to the idea that you can pursue anything if you’re just crazy enough to try it.

The Osopher Single Malt Whiskey

Stranahan’s “The Osopher” is the oldest whiskey the distillery has ever bottled. It stays true to George Stranahan’s passion for creativity and Stranahan’s commitment to innovating American Single Malt Whiskey. It starts its journey of aging for 11 years at the distillery before being matured for another four months in barrels used to age Flying Dog’s Road Dog Porter. The flavor profile consists of the following:

Nose: Coffee cake. Roasty malt mingles with toffee and barrel char

Palate: Dark chocolate caramels, sherried-soaked plums, and a dash of aged hops

Finish: Bread pudding and barley wine temper to a dry finish

The Osopher Imperial Road Dog Porter

The limited-edition Flying Dog beer created for The Osopher Project is an imperial version of Road Dog Porter, an early creation by the brewery. Road Dog was one of the first beers to be wrapped in original artwork by internationally renowned artist Ralph Steadman; a version of this label was used to create The Osophers for both brands as well as the NFT. Flying Dog’s imperial Road Dog Porter was aged in 10-year-old Stranahan’s Whiskey barrels before being bottled. The results are:

Aroma: Dark chocolate and caramel dominates the aroma, followed by cocoa butter and maple that finishes with light notes of nutty vanilla.

Palate:  A velvety smooth explosion of chocolate, vanilla cream, toasted pecans, toffee, and maple balanced with hints of caramel, spice, and tobacco from the whiskey.

Stranahan’s The Osopher carries a 47.3% ABV and Flying Dog’s The Osopher carries a 12% ABV.

This project is powered by YellowHeart, the Web3 marketplace for ticketing, music and memberships.

About Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is a pioneering and award-winning American single malt whiskey comprised of 100% malted barley and Rocky Mountain water, aged in new American white oak barrels. From grain to glass, Stranahan’s whiskey is distilled and bottled at its Colorado distillery, the state’s first legal distillery since Prohibition. Stranahan’s expressions include Original, Blue Peak, Sherry Cask, Diamond Peak, Mountain Angel 10-Year-Old, and the limited-edition yearly release: Snowflake. As one of the first and best-selling American single malts, Stranahan’s is committed to building recognition and admiration for the category globally.

About Flying Dog Brewery

As the 35th largest craft brewery in the U.S., Flying Dog has a reputation for brewing premium beer that pushes the confines of traditional styles out of our home base in Frederick, MD. From hop-heavy favorites like The Truth Imperial IPA and Double Dog Double IPA to left-of-the-dial best sellers like Kujo Cold Brew Coffee Porter and Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale – we take pride in challenging the status quo. Our brand is built on the gospel of Gonzo, drawing inspiration from Hunter S. Thompson’s relentless truth seeking and Ralph Steadman’s provocative drawings. In the true gonzo spirit, when authoritarians have tried to censor our creativity, we’ve gone to Federal court defending our right to free speech and expression and won. At Flying Dog, we challenge conformity, embrace the weird, and encourage you to Cut The Leash and reclaim your independence.

About Ralph Steadman

When George Stranahan first founded the Flying Dog Brewery just outside of Aspen, Hunter S Thompson immediately suggested Ralph Steadman produce the labels for their first beer, Road Dog. Flying Dog still uses Ralph’s work on their beer bottles today so it was a natural fit to use that first artwork on the Osopher Whiskey. Steadman is best known for his collaborations with Hunter S Thompson including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Curse of Lono. He has illustrated literary classics such as Alice in Wonderland and Treasure Island, and written his own books including I Leonardo, Freud and The Big I Am. Other collaborations include Pyschogeography with Will Self and the Gonzovation Trilogy about endangered animals with Ceri Levy.

About First Responders Foundation

Tröegs Releases Fan-Favorite Winter IPA, Blizzard of Hops

November 28, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Tröegs Independent BrewingHERSHEY, PA – Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of Blizzard of Hops, its fan-favorite winter IPA.

The seasonal beer has been a mainstay of the Hershey, PA, brewery’s Hop Cycle IPA series since its inception in 2014.

“It’s a nod to hop growers around the world, thanking them for another successful harvest,” says Tröegs brewmaster and co-founding brother John Trogner.

Brimming with enlivening bitterness, Blizzard of Hops evokes notes of spruce tips, pineapple, and orange rind thanks to a combination of Centennial, Chinook, and El Dorado hops.

“In the winter, people’s taste buds deaden down and they tend to eat richer and fattier foods,” explains Trogner. “In my mind, there’s a need for bitterness on the beer side to balance that out.”

Built on a foundation of pilsner malt and wheat, this cold-weather favorite clocks in at 6.4% ABV.

Blizzard of Hops is available in 12-oz bottles and cans as well as 1/2 and 1/6 kegs everywhere Tröegs beer is sold.

About Tröegs Independent Brewery

In the past 24 years, Tröegs has grown from two brothers to 250 people, but we’re still very much a family business. Because we stay true to our core values of independence and family ownership, we’ve kept the small-brewery DNA we all hold dear.

We live and brew in fertile central PA, and we’re proud to support our local farmers. Every year, we buy more than 225,000 pounds of local grain, honey and fruit to use in our beer.

Lazy Dog Beer Club Levels Up Beer Game with ‘Hophead Supercade’ Quarterly Release

November 28, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Lazy Dog Beer ClubLazy Dog Beer Club, a quarterly membership subscription created by beer lovers, for beer lovers, introduces its 16th quarterly release, which is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for video game and beer aficionados.

The kit, named “Hophead Supercade,” includes an eight-pack of four uniquely brewed beers (two of each) from four breweries across the country. The theme, beer names, and label art have all been inspired by the golden age of arcade games. Each of the four beers in this release represents a different fictional game that might have been found in the nostalgic arcade world.

Lazy Dog Beer Club teamed up with Barrel of Monks Brewing in Boca Raton, Florida; Big Dog’s Brewing Company. in Las Vegas; Knee Deep Brewing Company in Auburn, California; and Red Leg Brewing Company in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The release includes the following beers and storylines:

“Hop Attack” Double IPA // ABV: 8.5% // IBU: 50

The double IPA has complex hops and tastes of sweet citrus and tropical aromas up front with a firm, pithy bitterness in the middle, followed by waves of dank resin and herbal notes. The can artwork mimics old-school space-themed arcade games.

About the Brewer: Since 2015, Barrel of Monks Brewing has proudly brewed Belgian-inspired beers to bring the taste of the Old World to fans in Boca Raton, Florida. They recently began producing hazy IPAs, pilsners, and porters — among other styles — to experiment with new offerings, expand their portfolio, and create the best craft beer.

“It’s On” Bohemian Amber Lager // ABV: 5.5% // IBU: 25

The Bohemian-style amber lager has a slight hop bitterness up front to balance the bready and caramel malt aroma taste. The playful can depicts a game where a jumping pup dodges falling barrels to reach the top.

About the Brewer: Big Dog’s Brewing Co. is the oldest brewery in Las Vegas. They make award-winning beers and have a playful spirit. Started on the Strip in 1993, Big Dog’s has continued to expand and brew delicious beers for Nevada.

“Final Lap” Italian-Style Pilsner // ABV: 4.8% // IBU: 30

The crisp Italian pilsner is a victorious balance of bitterness and subtle bready malt made for champions. The can and beer name are a nod to classic car racing games, while the beer recipe was inspired by the brewer’s Italian heritage and his take on a classic Italian beer.

About the Brewer: Knee Deep Brewing Company is a family-owned microbrewery that started in summer 2010. They currently have their own taproom and expansive brewing facility.

“Cran*Bert” Wheat Ale// ABV: 5.6% // IBU: 15

This wheat ale with cranberry has a strong malty backbone. Notes of biscuit and sweet bread are rounded out with subtle cranberry and citrus undertones. The can is animated with a timeless arcade game featuring a cranberry character bouncing around a pyramid of cubes.

About the Brewer: Founded on July 4, 2013, Red Leg Brewing Company is a veteran-owned and -operated production brewery. The brewery operates out of a 14,000-square-foot airplane hangar-style facility and mixed-use complex that includes a taproom, wine and cider selections, a rooftop deck and bar, and an outdoor beer garden.

“It was so much fun teaming up with these brewers to dream up their take on the golden age of arcade video games for this release,” said John Williams, chief marketing officer for Lazy Dog Restaurant. “We hope seeing and tasting the beer is a nostalgic experience for all of our beer club members.”

The beers are packaged in a carrier that weaves in fun, game-themed inspirations. A zine provides an overview of each brewery and beer style, plus tasting notes, ingredients, and suggested pairings for each beer. To further engage guests in a fun way, Lazy Dog Restaurants’ Instagram page created an immersive digital experience with an AR filter game inspired by the release.

“Hophead Supercade” was brewed in collaboration with Melvin Brewing. This release is only available to qualified Lazy Dog Beer Club members. Those interested in signing up for a Lazy Dog Beer Club membership can register online or at any Lazy Dog Restaurant in California, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, and Texas. Tröegs Mad Elf Grand Cru Returns for the Holidays in Limited Cork & Cage Bottles

November 27, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Tröegs Independent BreweryHERSHEY, PA – Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of Mad Elf Grand Cru, a limited “director’s cut” of its iconic holiday ale, Mad Elf.

Like its counterpart, Mad Elf Grand Cru starts with chocolate, Munich and Pilsner malts and features a large addition of local Pennsylvania wildflower honey. It’s also fermented with the same spicy Belgian yeast strain as Mad Elf, which lends flavors of cinnamon, clove, and allspice.

Whereas Mad Elf features five different varieties of cherries, Grand Cru exclusively showcases Balaton cherries to impart notes of tart pie filling.

Mad Elf Grand Cru clocks in at the same 11% ABV as Mad Elf, but instead of a ruby red glow Grand Cru pours a lovely deep burgundy.

“Putting this beer in cork and cage bottles helps give it that extra special touch,” says Tröegs co-founding brother Chris Trogner. “We use the same bottles for beers like LaGrave and Jovial that we bottle condition, and we know the corks are great at keeping that extra pressure in. It also means they’re great at keeping oxygen out. Since Grand Cru is a beer many people like to age, that’s a big plus.”

Mad Elf Grand Cru is available in limited 375-ml bottles and on draft everywhere Tröegs beer is sold.
