First Deaf Owned and Operated Craft Brewery – Streetcar 82 Brewing

The Owners of Streetcar 82 Brewing
Jon Cetrano, Mark Burke, & Sam Costner are the three guys behind Streetcar 82 Brewing Co. They are graduates of Gallaudet University and each of them left the D.C. area after college. They returned to D.C. at different stages of our career and with an additional thirst for something more. They wanted to create *something* that they could bring and share with the community. Jon and Mark are home brewers and have been brewing and drinking good beer for quite awhile. Sam, however, is a bourbon-lover who has learned the dark arts of brewing beer.

The three of them got together one night and drank their home-brewed beer and like every other cliche microbrewery story they said, “Hey, we can do this professionally.” The next morning, however, they really decided to do it and now have brung their brewery to Hyattsville, Maryland.

The Name – Streetcar 82 Brewing

The brewery takes its name from the 82 Streetcar line which ran from 1888 until its closing on September 7, 1958. This line started at 5th & G St and continued through the neighborhoods of Eckington, Woodridge, Mt. Rainier, Hyattsville, and College Park. The route follows Rhode Island Ave (Rt. 1) for the majority of the trip. They chose this name because all three of them live on the path this line took through our neighborhoods and they can easily imagine themselves hopping onto Streetcar 82 and meeting up at their brewery to make and drink craft beer!

The Location of Streetcar 82 Brewing
Why did they decide Hyattsville, MD? In one word…community. Community is very important. They all graduated from Gallaudet University, a tight-knit community which is right down the road from our location. After they graduated, they left to start our careers in different parts of the country. All three of them came back here because of the community support that is unique to this area and have the support of a large Deaf community, each of their neighborhoods (Eckington, Woodridge, and Hyattsville) has a unique, distinctive identity, and small town feel. They know their neighbors and can say, “Hello, how is your spouse/family/dog/cat doing?” This is something that they all feel deeply about and want to create a place where people can come together, be neighborly, and enjoy beer.
