Batson River Brewing Introduces Dark Woods Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout

November 29, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

WELLS, Maine – Batson River Brewing & Distilling, an independent Maine craft brewery, proudly unveils its latest creation, Dark Woods Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout. Aged for over six months in the brewery’s proprietary Bourbon & Rum spirit barrels, and expertly blended for a velvety mouthfeel even though it clocks in at a robust 9.3% ABV. Dark Woods delivers a rich, mocha flavor profile supported by creamy vanilla & luscious chocolate notes- promising a sensory delight for barrel-aged stout enthusiasts.

According to Head Brewer Dan Stampone, “It’s the first canned beer from our barrel program, so it was important to us to get the blend just right. The synergy between our beer and spirits programs afford us the latitude to do something truly special. The future looks very exciting.”

Now available on draft at all four Batson River brewpub locations, customer can also purchase limited 4-packs from the Wells and Biddeford locations.

The Spoetzl Brewery Announces Major New Sustainability Initiatives

November 29, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

SHINER, Texas— The Spoetzl Brewery, the family-owned and independent craft brewer of the iconic Shiner Bock, announces its extensive new onsite sustainability initiatives. With a dedicated mission to care for the environment and surrounding communities, the brewery now implements new sustainable systems including solar-powered energy, updated waste reduction procedures and effective recycling processes.

With sustainable energy on the rise, The Spoetzl Brewery now features solar panels to the brewery to reduce waste and produce cleaner energy. The solar panels generate over 2.0 megawatts of electricity, powering 30% of the brewer’s electrical requirements. In addition to solar energy, the brewery also uses skylights and super-efficient LED lights to further reduce electricity use.

“At the Spoetzl Brewery, we’re committed to investing in renewable energy initiatives and to minimizing our carbon footprint”, says Tom Fiorenzi, Shiner’s Director of Brewery & Distillery Operations. “We’re proud to have the largest solar array on a Texas brewery and are hopeful that other breweries and businesses will follow in our footsteps.”

In addition to adding solar panels, the brewery enforces procedures to reduce waste. To date, the brewery recycles 98% of its waste. To further reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, 200 tons of paper and over 300 tons of glass are recycled each year. The Spoetzl brewery also transfers exhaust from brew kettles to a hot water system that supplies heat for wort preheating, cleaning systems and offices throughout the brewery.

With the new conservation efforts and procedures, the Spoetzl Brewery is focused on helping the surrounding communities and businesses. Each year, over 13,000 tons of spent grain is sent to local farmers as a source of food for animals. The brewery also uses an anaerobic wastewater pretreatment system that collects all the brewery’s processed wastewater. This apparatus generates a biogas that is cleaned, compressed and then used to supply over eight percent of the brewery’s heating needs. Further, over 33 percent of the brewery’s pretreated wastewater is used to grow hay to support local farmers.

The Spoetzl Brewery recently introduced a brand-new onsite BBQ restaurant and a craft spirits distillery with a tour and tastings open to the public. Tours of the Spoetzl Brewery and Distillery are available seven days a week.

SweetWater Launches New ‘Half-a-Gummie’ IPA

November 20, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

ATLANTA, Georgia— SweetWater Brewing Company (“SweetWater Brewing” or “SweetWater”), the largest craft brewer in the Southeast and a subsidiary of Tilray Brands, Inc. (“Tilray” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: TLRY and TSX: TLRY), announced the latest innovation in its acclaimed IPA series – ‘Half-A-Gummie’ IPA. This new line of India Pale Ales, bursting with fruit-forward flavors, is a twist on the wildly successful SweetWater Gummies Double IPA – which launched earlier this year, now reimagined with a more session-friendly alcohol content. The original Gummies IIPA is available in cans nationwide while the innovative Half-A-Gummie IPA is ready to tantalize consumer taste buds on draft.

Building on the trailblazing success of the SweetWater Gummies line, ‘Half-A-Gummie’ IPA emerges as a natural evolution in SweetWater’s pursuit of innovation and excellence in craft brewing. The SweetWater Gummies series launched as a testament to the brewery’s commitment to flavor-forward and high-ABV ales, setting a new benchmark in the Double IPA category. These ales, notably the Tropical IIPA and Fruit Punch IIPA with a potent 9.5% ABV, captured the essence of summer with their haze, juiciness, and bold, fruity flavors.

‘Half-A-Gummie’ retains the essence of the Gummies series—its captivating fruit flavors and aromatic appeal—while presenting a lower alcohol-by-volume content as an alternative option for consumers; The launch series of Half-A-Gummie includes the same two great varieties from the original series: Tropical IPA, and Fruit Punch IPA, each boasting a 5.5% alcohol-by-volume. These new brews are a masterful blend of fruit explosions, featuring the luscious flavors of strawberry, pineapple, orange, and cherry, culminating in a uniquely smooth, incredibly flavorful, and drinkable IPA experience.

This new line is a testament to SweetWater’s agility in adapting to consumer preferences, offering a lower-ABV IPA that still embodies the brewery’s signature blend of bold flavors and easy drinkability. This strategic move aligns with a market report predicting a 6 percent CAGR growth in the fruit beer market over the next decade, driven by a growing preference for beers that offer both refreshing taste and a gentler alcohol presence, much like ‘Half-A-Gummie’.

“Our Gummies Double IPA has been a huge hit with consumers who crave fruit-forward, high-ABV beers. We’ve also discovered a strong demand, especially with our on-premise partners, for beers with a similar flavor profile and less alcohol. We’re excited to offer drinkers the choice to enjoy an easy-drinking IPA with low bitterness and delicious fruit flavors while tapping into a lower ABV option,” said Ty Gilmore, President of U.S. Beers for Tilray Beer.

Discover the revolution in IPA – Half-A-Gummie is here to redefine expectations and excite palates.

U.S. Open Beer Championship Announces the Best Kokua Project IPAs

November 20, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

OXFORD, Ohio – The U.S. Open Beer Championship, one of the top three beer competitions in the United States, is giving back to The Kokua Project and including the initiative’s Kokua IPAs for evaluation in its annual U.S. Open Cider Championship.

As a part of The Kokua Project, which is led by Maui Brewing Company and inspired by Sierra Nevada’s 2018 Resilience project, more than 700 breweries across the US and internationally have pledged to brew Kokua and donate the beer’s proceeds to Maui relief efforts via the Global Empowerment Mission. Kokua is a Session IPA that delivers a refreshing wave of tropical hop aroma atop a delicate malt base.

“Judging these beers during the U.S. Open is a way to raise awareness around this disaster relief effort, and to celebrate the breweries across the country that are banding together to raise funds for those impacted by the tragic Maui wildfires,” said Dow Scoggins, founder of the U.S. Open Beer & Cider Championships. The U.S. Open donated $3,000 to Maui Beer Company Wildfire Fund as a part of The Kokua Project.

Each brewery that submits a Kokua IPA to the competition donated a $85 entry fee to Maui relief efforts. Kokua IPA was judged in its own category, alongside the wide array of cider entries the annual fall competition is known for. Tasting one beer recipe brewed by many different breweries from across the country is a unique, exciting prospect for judges.

“We are eager to taste and evaluate the Kokua Project beers from venerated breweries all over the country,” said Spencer Mapes, Director of the U.S. Open. “But it’s important to note that they were all brewed with helping hands and open hearts, meaning they are all winners at the end of the day.”

The judges favorite Kokua IPAs include:

Kokua Session IPA

GOLD – Twin Creeks Brewing – Virginia

SILVER – Aspire Brewing – New York

BRONZE – Shovel Town Brewery – Massachusetts

Kokua IPA

GOLD – HighGrain Brewing – Ohio

SILVER – Forbidden Peak Brewery – Alaska

BRONZE – Movement Brewing – California

BRONZE – Buck Wild Brewing – Texas

The barn consists of a judging area, a serving area, two 450-square-foot coolers, an office, and a nano brewery. As their thousands of social media followers suggest, they’re definitely delivering a relatable message. “Whatever you believe or whatever your thing is that’s your story, we need to be genuine. The best thing any business can do right now is really to become themselves and be the influencers,” says Taylor Chip owner Doug Taylor.

By featuring local ingredients and crafting consistently delicious products, both Appalachian Brewing Company and Taylor Chip are setting industry standards. Their commitment to quality, authenticity, and sincere relationships fosters a company culture set to stand the test of time.

“We are heavily invested in taking a leadership position in this category,” shares Eric Franco, Vice President of Sales, BrewDog USA. “Education around the AFNA segment is critical for continued and sustained growth with our wholesalers, retailer partners and the buyers of non-alcoholic beer.”

On the heels of a successful Sober October, BrewDog’s AF Mixed Pack continues to perform above the national trend as the #1 AF Beer Variety Pack in the country in a category that has grown 32 percent to $447 million year over year (Nielsen IQ, Sept. 2023). The coveted box includes three non-alcoholic version of BrewDog’s core beers – Punk, Elvis Juice and Hazy – along with Nanny State, BrewDog’s golden AF ale that launched the brand’s foray into non-alcoholic beer.

Regarding Nanny State and BrewDog’s expansion in the non-alcoholic space, Meagen Anderson, founder and CEO of the AFicioNAdo Certification Program, shares, “BrewDog’s non-alcoholic brewing program in the United States precedes most of the recent growth in non-alcoholic beer offerings, which many people do not know. BrewDog’s story of creating Nanny State as one of the lead craft AFNA offerings in the early days showed their breadth and range as a global producer. They have always shared their brewing process in hopes of seeing the AFNA category develop further, and this commitment by Eric Teodoro Franco to training and education of his team as well as distributor and retail partners, demonstrates their continued commitment to long term growth, sustainability and quality as a recognized global brand. We are very proud to be included in their focus to increase BrewDog AF presence in the market.”

About BrewDog

Since 2007, BrewDog has been on a mission to make other people as passionate about great craft beer as they are. From the Headliner series, which includes bold, uncompromising pack leaders like the flagship Punk IPA and Elvis Juice, to the Amplified range (beer, but turned up to 11), BrewDog brews beer that blows people’s minds and has kick-started a revolution.

In addition to becoming the first carbon negative brewery in the world in 2020, BrewDog is also a Positive Planet partner. This is all part of its mission to become the world’s most sustainable drinks brand, showing that business can be a force for good.

BrewDog shook up the business world in 2010 with the launch of pioneering crowdfunding initiative Equity for Punks, an initiative that has seen the company raise more than $100M over seven rounds, with its latest round open until April 2020.

The funds and the community of Equity Punk shareholders (217,803) has enabled the Scottish craft brewery to scale up without selling out. With over 100 bars across the globe, export into 60 countries, and a brewery in Ohio that launched in 2017, BrewDog continues to take the craft beer revolution stratospheric, while continuing to push the boundaries, invest in people, put the beer first and champion other small breweries in its venues.
