Birds Barbershop Gets Crafty, Taps St. Elmo Brewing Co. as New Beer Partner

January 8, 2025 by Spencer Mapes

AUSTIN, TX – Today, Birds Barbershop proudly begins serving St. Elmo Brewing Co.’s signature brew Carl at the barbershop’s nine Austin locations. The partnership kicks off with a fun “Free Cuts for Carl” promotion, offering anyone named Carl – with proper I.D. and 21+ years of age – a complimentary haircut, along with St. Elmo’s flagship beer of the same name, the entire month of January.

“We’ve always dreamed of a partner like St. Elmo that taps into that same homegrown, Austin vibe,” said Birds Barbershop co-founder Michael Portman. “Our companies were founded down the street from each other in South Austin, and we both value our local communities above all else.”

Founded in 2016 at 440 E. St. Elmo Rd., St. Elmo Brewing was established by a group of passionate beer lovers with a vision to create high-quality craft beers in Austin. The company recently added a second brewery and taproom location at 8110 Springdale Road. The brewery hosts events, live music, and food trucks, making it a hotspot for locals, just like Birds Barbershop.

“When I moved to Austin, I got my first haircut at Birds Barbershop and received a free beer with my haircut,” said Bryan Winslow, co-founder of St. Elmo Brewing Company. “It is beyond cool to now be the brew of choice at all Birds’ locations, and we already have plans for more fun collaborations to come.”

In addition to St. Elmo Carl, Birds Barbershop will feature St. Elmo Hazy IPA and, for those embracing Dry January, St. Elmo Hop Water. Each following month, the lineup will spotlight St. Elmo Carl alongside rotating seasonal favorites, including award-winning brews like St. Elmo Amber Lager and St. Elmo West IPA. These beverages will be available year-round at all Birds Barbershop locations for clients aged 21 and up. For more information or to book a haircut, color or style service, visit birdsbarbershop.com.

About Birds Barbershop

In 2006, childhood friends Michael Portman and Jayson Rapaport found themselves living in Austin, TX, with nowhere to get an affordable, high-quality haircut. Together, they created a salon for men and women, took out all the fuss, and added free beer to the experience. An addiction to old school arcade games developed. Birds Barbershop has been named six consecutive times to ELLE Magazine’s list of the 100 best salons in America and by the Austin Chronicle as Best Haircut every year since opening. Today, Birds Barbershop serves upwards of 20,000 people monthly and employs more than 150 people in nine locations across Austin.

About St. Elmo Brewing

Since opening in 2016, St. Elmo Brewing has become a staple in Austin’s vibrant craft beer scene. Known for crafting approachable beers that cater to all types of drinkers, St. Elmo offers a wide range of styles from hazy IPAs to traditional German lagers. These beers can be enjoyed onsite at the brewery’s two Austin locations or found on menus and retail shelves throughout the city. Recognized as one of Condé Nast Traveler’s Best Breweries in Austin, and with multiple gold medals from the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) and U.S. Beer Open, they recently expanded to a larger second location in East Austin. True to its roots, St. Elmo continues to be a hub for the community by regularly hosting programming and events like the popular Grassy Thursdays and weekly trivia nights. The brewery also fosters creative collaboration through partnerships with local artists and designers with their influence seen not only in the design of the brewery’s space but also in the artwork featured on the cans, including those for the flagship Carl Kölsch, St. Elmo Amber, St. Elmo Hazy, St. Elmo West, and Hop Water. Boulevard Brewing Co. Toasts to 35th Anniversary, Partners with Holladay Distillery for Limited Release Anniversary Ale

November 20, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

KANSAS CITY, MO — In celebration of 35 years of brewing in Kansas City, Boulevard Brewing Co. has announced their latest collaboration: the 35th Anniversary Ale. Aged in Soft Red Wheat Bourbon barrels and Ben Holladay Bottled in Bond barrels provided by Weston, Missouri-based Holladay Distillery, the 35th Anniversary Ale boasts a hearty 12.5% ABV and a dark malt-forward balance perfect for celebrations.

Boulevard’s founder John McDonald delivered the first keg of Pale Ale on November 17, 1989, launching a legacy of innovation that Boulevard has honored for the last three-and-a-half decades. Boulevard went on to contribute to a craft beer renaissance across the country with a focus on community and craft, establishing itself as a staple in Kansas City and beyond. (Read more here.)

“In this latest release, we’re honoring Boulevard’s long tradition of innovation with a beer that showcases our team’s passion for creativity and local collaboration,” said Boulevard Brand Manager Adam Hall. “The 35th Anniversary Ale is more than just a beer—it’s a celebration of our shared commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation.”

“We’re honored to work with Boulevard as a part of their 35th anniversary,” said Patrick Fee, Holladay Distillery’s Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “Holladay Bourbon offers a unique taste of Missouri history dating back more than 160 years, so it’s a great fit to collaborate on this special release with Boulevard, which is a giant of Missouri beverage history in its own right.”

Aged to perfection, the 35th Anniversary Ale melds rich aromas of caramel, bourbon and bready malt with exquisite flavors of molasses, dark fruit, toffee and caramel to create a satisfyingly soft, round body. The ale pairs ideally with aged cheeses, roasted meats and dulce de leche cheesecake.

Boulevard will celebrate its 35th Anniversary Happy Hour on Friday, November 15, from 5-7 p.m. at the brewery, where the team will be pouring the limited-release ale as well as unique flights that honor Boulevard’s history. Boulevard lovers can also enjoy a beer on the KC Wheel for $19.89 this weekend (Nov. 16-17), and Pale Ale will be the Beer of the Month at all Tanner’s Bar & Grill locations in the metro for the rest of November. STRATFORD, Conn. – For IPA lovers craving all the hoppiness of their favorite brew minus the alcohol, Two Roads Brewing Co. today revealed the latest addition to its line of award-winning non-alcoholic beers: Road 2 Ruin Zero Non-Alc IPA.

The new NA version of Two Roads’ flagship beer is crafted with the same bold, hoppy flavor of its namesake brew, rich with floral and piney aromas and a crisp, clean, big-hop bite.

“We’ve been focusing sharply on our core beer brands, and Road 2 Ruin is at the top of that list.  Our brewmaster, Phil Markowski, and his team took the time they needed to develop a non-alcoholic take that fans of our flagship would instantly recognize and could easily embrace,” said Brad Hittle, co-founder and CEO of Two Roads. “This fabulous brew brilliantly pays off our strategy of investing in a more focused portfolio that gives our fans more ways to enjoy what they already love.”

Like all of Two Roads non-alc beers, Road 2 Ruin Zero is made using an arrested fermentation process, where the yeast strain selected is carefully managed to achieve an ABV of below 0.5%. The result is a bold, full-flavored liquid that tastes remarkably like the alcoholic version.

Road 2 Ruin Zero offers the same quality ingredients and bold flavor in a label that is instantly recognizable by IPA fans everywhere.

White Bay Brewery has announced a 3-year partnership with the Sydney Swans as “Official Beer of the Swans” for seasons 2024-2026.

The partnership is a key pillar of White Bay’s strategy to embed itself as a leading Sydney brewery and brand, and to extend our reach from the Inner West to all of Sydney, whilst linking our passionate customers to Sydney’s favourite sporting team. As an extension of this, White Bay Brewery has also partnered with Merivale to pour XPL & PILS at the SCG and Allianz Stadium.

In conjunction with announcing the Sydney Swans partnership, White Bay Brewery along with our equity partner & brand adviser Richards Rose is pleased to present a fresh new brand direction anchored by the iconic W logo. In launching the new W brand direction, we have made our Extra Pale Lager beer a permanent fixture in a stunning red and larger 375ml can.

White Bay’s owners have invested a further $1m into the business, to support the new growth of the brand.

“We are excited to bring our new brand and Sydney Swans partnership to life” said White Bay Brewery Co-Founder, Adam Trippe-Smith. “As a small brewery on the Balmain Peninsula, we decided recently it was time to elevate our beers to all of Sydney. Censored Munky Launches Inaugural Beer in Partnership With White Lion Brewery

July 5, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

CHICOPEE, Massachusettes— Censored Munky Brewing Company announces the launch of its inaugural beer “Freee Speeech!!!”. Based in Chicopee, Censored Munky is in partnership with White Lion Brewing Company out of Springfield to contract brew and distribute the inaugural beer, with forthcoming plans for Censored Munky to have a brewing operation and tasting room in Chicopee, an effort that will employ 3-5 people initially.

Two of the founders have over 100 years of family roots in Chicopee. “There was no better place to start our company than in Chicopee, where there is a working-class culture, and our French/Irish family roots are from the area. This all speaks to our passion for great beer, to have fun, and to have lively conversations”, says Rick Roque, area investment banker and Co-Founder.

Freee Speeech!!! is an American IPA that has a mild hop profile with hints of tropical fruit and citrus that is smooth and clear. Censored Munky pairs its beer with design concepts to illustrate political satire in this heavily politicized climate. The company intends to launch an assortment of beers to make fun of political parties, elected officials, conspiracies, and anything else the Munky desires.

“We made Freee Speeech!!! our flagship beer and first design because of the importance of the First Amendment”, says John Phillips, Chicopee resident, Chief Munky and Co-Founder. “It was a revolutionary concept and freedom that was won in the days of old. It took power away from those who controlled information. We should always strive for truth, dialogue, and laughter”.

Tommy Reynolds, Co-Founder, states “Our t-shirts, merchandise, can designs and messaging bring a fresh perspective on the world we live in with humor, wit, sarcasm and satire. By combining visual aids, a paired unique taste, and a thirst for laughter, we aim to bring people together via a shared vision; we realized censorship sucks.”

Freee Speeech!!! will be available at liquor stores, bars, and restaurants across Massachusetts starting April 20, 2024. It will be on tap at White Lion Brewing Company in both Springfield MA and Amherst MA, and at Massie’s American Bistro in Chicopee MA beginning on April 20th.

Earth Month at Allagash: Beer Collab With Patagonia Provisions, Beach Clean-Up and More

April 11, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Maine— With their year-round commitment to reducing their environmental footprint, every day is Earth Day at B Corp-certified Allagash Brewing Company. And for the month of April, nationally known as Earth Month, the Portland-based beer brand is unveiling a full suite of initiatives and events for both the general public and their dedicated staff.

On Saturday, April 20th, Allagash is hosting an Earth Month Event at their Tasting Room (50 Industrial Way, Portland) and will release the first canned version of their collaboration beer with Patagonia Provisions, the food and beverage business of outdoor apparel company Patagonia. First brewed in June 2023, and only available on draft that first year, the Kernza Lager stars all organic ingredients and Regenerative Organic Certified Kernza perennial grain – a deeply-rooted regenerative perennial grain that has numerous environmental benefits, including stabilizing soil, increasing soil organic matter, and requires minimal tilling.

Patagonia is playing a part in Allagash’s Earth Month festivities in more ways than one: the April 20th Tasting Room event will feature:
A sidewalk sale of Allagash-branded gear
Sampling of Patagonia Provisions including responsibly-sourced tinned mussels and Organic Crackers made from regeneratively grown wheat
Patagonia Worn Wear Pop-Up offering expert quick fixes and non-sewn repairs to revive your damaged gear. Swing by to discuss gear repair, patch-up your holes, and refresh your zipper sliders. Gear must be laundered. All brands accepted.

The brewery’s ability to give back is largely due to their committed and passionate employees. That’s why Allagash is also celebrating Earth Month internally with various staff team-building sustainability-minded activities throughout April, including: a clean-up of Portland’s East End beach, a Portland Trails Clean Up at Riverton Trolley Park, not to mention an earth-friendly barbecue.

Allagash’s environmental initiatives are ongoing: in 2023 they increased their Maine-grown grain usage by 25.9% over the prior year to 1.89 million pounds. The brewery also continues to reduce their water consumption per gallon of beer, now down to 3.1 gallons of water per gallon of beer, which is half the industry average. Plus, they directed more funds in philanthropy to their community than ever before—$600,000 in 2023 alone.

“We tend to treat every month like it’s Earth Month here, but April is a great time to take stock of how we can continue to strive to do even more to give back to both the environment and our Maine community,” said Zoe Malia, Sustainability Manager, Allagash.

Brewery founders are encouraged to submit entries by April 10th. Finalists will be invited to the annual Crafting Dreams Beer Bash, which comes home to Boston this year, for the chance to share their best brews and personal stories with Samuel Adams representatives, media, and select public beer lovers.

“It has been an incredible journey thus far welcoming Funkytown Brewery into our Experienceship Hall of Fame. They are the epitome of what our program is all about – passionate and hard-working craft business owners with unbelievable ambition,” said Jennifer Glanville Love, Director of Partnerships & Collaborations at Boston Beer Company. “We look forward to continuing our support of their successful journey as we open up our family once again this year to identify a new brewer who is just as deserving.”
