Collaboration Beers

Bira 91 and New Belgium Launch a Global Collab Beer – “Chutney Sour” – Inspired by Indian Flavors

March 28, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

FORT COLLINS, Colo./NEW DELHI, India— Bira 91 – India’s leading craft beer company, and one of the fastest growing beer brands globally, and New Belgium Brewing – one of the largest craft brewers in the United States, today announced the release of “Chutney Sour”, a collab beer that brings together vibrant flavors of Indian street food and the legendary craft brewing heritage of Colorado.

Brewed with Tamarind – a puckering sour fruit used in Indian chutneys and curries – the beer is based on the classic Dubbel, a Belgian-style ale perfected by the New Belgium Brewery.

The beer was simultaneously released in the companies’ respective taprooms – Bengaluru & Delhi-NCR, in India for Bira 91, and Fort Collins, Colorado for New Belgium Brewery. The release was timed to coincide with the Indian Spring festival of Holi – a joyful celebration of color, flavors and renewal.

Holi has crossed over into the mainstream and several cities across the world have a variety of celebrations including music festivals, outdoor block parties, color runs and culinary events.

Commenting on the collaboration, Ankur Jain, Founder and CEO, Bira 91, said, “We couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with New Belgium Brewing. Colorado is at the center of beer innovation in the world, and New Belgium is the most well-respected beer company in the United States. Our Limited Release beers are brewed with a two-word MO for our brewers – Go Crazy! Right from the word Go, our respective brewers started jamming and vibing, and came up with this crazy, but in hindsight, such an obvious idea – making a Belgian Sour Ale with Tamarind –a “Chutney Sour”. The result is a brilliant surprise, and I am sure consumers who get their hands on this Limited Release will love it!”

“India is known for its exciting culinary flavors, and we’re excited to partner with Bira 91 on a beer that brings these flavors to life for our Fort Collins craft enthusiasts,” said New Belgium CEO Shaun Belongie. “Collaborations like this allow us to play with new and unexpected flavor combinations and invest in our best-in-class beer innovation.”

The beers will be brewed only once and will be sold in the taprooms till stocks last.

Bira 91 x New Belgium Chutney Sour

Tasting Notes: Our chutney-inspired beer is an intense flavor bomb, blended from two parts – a rich, malty and spicy Belgian Ale, with the addition of tamarind, giving this beer a tangy-sour flavor. The aroma is filled with notes of toast, fig, raisin, and dark fruit, complemented by a pleasant tartness from the tamarind.
Style: Belgian Ale brewed with Tamarind
Ingredients: Specialty Malts, Tamarind, Saaz Hops, Belgian Yeast
Color: Copper Amber
ABV: 7%

Blackberry Smoke and New Realm Brewing Company Launch Southern Light Lager

February 21, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

ATLANTA, Georgia – Who’s ready for a second round? Award-winning craft brewer New Realm Brewing and acclaimed American rock band Blackberry Smoke have teamed up for their latest release: Blackberry Smoke Southern Light Lager. The American lager is 4% ABV and will be available in 12-and 16-oz. six-packs and on draft. The beer will be available in select markets.

This is the second beer the duo has released. In 2022, they launched Blackberry Smoke American Lager in celebration of the band’s 21st birthday. The beer was ranked one of the top 100 beers of 2023 by The Official Review.

“We wanted to brew another beer that we would want to drink,” said Brit Turner, drummer and co-founder of Blackberry Smoke. “Next to hearing your song on the radio, there’s nothing cooler than seeing your band’s name on a beer can. We crafted this one for our fans, and I hope they can feel the love we put into this one.”

At just 110 calories and nine carbs, Southern Light Lager is an easy drinking lager, crafted for refreshment. Expect a straw gold color and an approachable hop bill featuring Magnum, Hersbrucker and lemondrop hops.

“There are a lot of parallels between crafting a song and crafting a beer,” said Mitch Steele, co-founder and Brewmaster of New Realm. “It was great to work with our friends in Blackberry Smoke on another release, and I think we came up with a great beer for our sophomore collaboration. We love working with the whole team, and it’s incredible to see the heights the New Realm name has climbed alongside our brothers and sisters at Blackberry Smoke. The Blackberry Smoke family asked for a light lager for more easy drinking, and that’s what we’ve made! I can’t wait to see how this brew quenches the thirst of our fans wherever they are!”

About New Realm Brewing Co.

New Realm is an American craft brewery and distillery started in 2016 by co-founders Carey Falcone, Bob Powers, and Mitch Steele. The Company operates production and innovation breweries/distilleries, each with on-site scratch kitchens serving globally inspired, locally sourced fare, in multiple Southeastern US cities. New Realm’s core principles are quality, creativity, authenticity, and striving for perfection, all with a customer-centric community focused commitment and approach.

U.S. Open Beer Championship Announces the Best Kokua Project IPAs

November 20, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

OXFORD, Ohio – The U.S. Open Beer Championship, one of the top three beer competitions in the United States, is giving back to The Kokua Project and including the initiative’s Kokua IPAs for evaluation in its annual U.S. Open Cider Championship.

As a part of The Kokua Project, which is led by Maui Brewing Company and inspired by Sierra Nevada’s 2018 Resilience project, more than 700 breweries across the US and internationally have pledged to brew Kokua and donate the beer’s proceeds to Maui relief efforts via the Global Empowerment Mission. Kokua is a Session IPA that delivers a refreshing wave of tropical hop aroma atop a delicate malt base.

“Judging these beers during the U.S. Open is a way to raise awareness around this disaster relief effort, and to celebrate the breweries across the country that are banding together to raise funds for those impacted by the tragic Maui wildfires,” said Dow Scoggins, founder of the U.S. Open Beer & Cider Championships. The U.S. Open donated $3,000 to Maui Beer Company Wildfire Fund as a part of The Kokua Project.

Each brewery that submits a Kokua IPA to the competition donated a $85 entry fee to Maui relief efforts. Kokua IPA was judged in its own category, alongside the wide array of cider entries the annual fall competition is known for. Tasting one beer recipe brewed by many different breweries from across the country is a unique, exciting prospect for judges.

“We are eager to taste and evaluate the Kokua Project beers from venerated breweries all over the country,” said Spencer Mapes, Director of the U.S. Open. “But it’s important to note that they were all brewed with helping hands and open hearts, meaning they are all winners at the end of the day.”

The judges favorite Kokua IPAs include:

Kokua Session IPA

GOLD – Twin Creeks Brewing – Virginia

SILVER – Aspire Brewing – New York

BRONZE – Shovel Town Brewery – Massachusetts

Kokua IPA

GOLD – HighGrain Brewing – Ohio

SILVER – Forbidden Peak Brewery – Alaska

BRONZE – Movement Brewing – California

BRONZE – Buck Wild Brewing – Texas

Beer lovers and those looking to support Maui’s relief efforts can find Kokua in many taprooms across every state. Donate directly to the Maui Beer Company Fire Fund online at mauibrewingco.com/mbcfire.

About the U.S. Open Beer Championship

The U.S. Open Beer Championship was founded in 2009 and judges more beer styles than any other competition in the world. The U.S. Open is also the only major beer competition to allow the gold medal winners of the AHA’s National Homebrew Competition to participate. The U.S. Open judging is held at the U.S. Open Event Center in Oxford, Ohio. The U.S. Open became the first beer competition to be held in its own venue, a 6,000-square-foot Amish pole barn on a small farm. The barn consists of a judging area, a serving area, two 450-square-foot coolers, an office, and a nano brewery. About the Kokua Project

The Kokua Project is one beer, brewed by many, to support our Maui ‘Ohana who have been affected by the tragic wildfires. More than 700 breweries across the US and internationally have volunteered to brew Kokua and pledged to donate the proceeds to the Global Empowerment Mission, the nonprofit organization that is facilitating the Maui Brewing Company Fire Fund. Kokua, translated as “extending help to others” in the Hawaiian language, is coordinated by Maui Brewing Company and inspired by Sierra Nevada’s Resilience project of 2018. Kokua is a Session IPA that delivers a refreshing wave of tropical hop aroma atop a delicate malt base. Beer lovers and those looking to support Maui’s relief efforts can find Kokua in many taprooms across every state.
