Knee Deep Brewing Announces Launch of This Year’s Perfect Fit IPA

March 23, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

AUBURN, California – “The first thing that surprised me was how happy they were to be here.”

That’s what Jerry Moore, owner and CEO of Knee Deep Brewing Company in Auburn, California, said about the employees with autism that the company hired in its canning and packaging operations in 2020.

But Moore didn’t set out to hire people with autism out of charity.

“We were having trouble finding reliable, hardworking employees to do the work,” he said. Moore acquired Knee Deep Brewing Company a few months after it was founded in 2010. Initially using a contract brewing facility in South Lake Tahoe, the brewery shipped kegs to bars and restaurants just over the Nevada border in Reno. Fast-forward to 2013, when operations moved to its current home, a 37,000 square-foot, 40 BBL brewhouse with multiple 120 BBL fermenters.

Today Knee Deep cranks out kegs, cans, and bottles and expects to hit 15,000-16,000 BBLs in 2023. Knee Deep beer is shipped throughout the country and to Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Australia, and for the first time this March, Singapore—with a tap room on site where visitors can taste beers as the brewing happens.

Call it a brew with a view.

2020 was also about the time Knee Deep’s hiring woes threatened to slow down production. Moore reached out to PRIDE Industries, a Sacramento area social enterprise that recruits, trains, places, and supports people with disabilities to provide a wide variety of manufacturing services. It turned out to be a great match for Knee Deep’s needs.

“We’ve been extremely pleased with our PRIDE Industries team members,” Moore said. “They show up on time, work hard, are a lot of fun, and have turned out to be a perfect fit.”

Such a great fit that when Knee Deep launched its first special brew to call attention to Autism Awareness Month in April 2022, they named the beer Perfect Fit, complete with a PRIDE Industries logo on the cans to call attention to autism and promote the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workforce. The brewery made 10 barrels and sold out in a few weeks.

“It was an English style IPA which people liked,” said Brewmaster Dean Roberts, “but I think people also liked the cause of autism awareness, and it gave them a reason to choose that beer.”

This year’s Perfect Fit will be a classic west coast IPA with Cascade hops, 5.5 ABV, and an IBU of 30. Knee Deep is making 30 barrels this time around in anticipation of the demand. The company will be donating a portion of proceeds to The Michael Ziegler PRIDE Industries Foundation, which provides programs to help people with disabilities, veterans, and foster youth become job-ready, and to Autism Rocks, a local foundation promoting acceptance and inclusion of neurodiversity in schools, communities, and workplaces.

“Awareness is great, but we want to do more,” Moore said. “We see the power of acceptance and inclusion and we want to spread to the news.”

Should other breweries consider hiring people with autism or other disabilities? “It’s not that different from hiring anyone else,” Moore said. “It’s finding the right person for the right job. This job happens to work for these individuals, and they love it.”

Take Zach, for example. He’s one of three PRIDE Industries employees at Knee Deep. Ask him if he likes his job and he’ll answer immediately: “I love it.”

“They’re happy to be here, and that’s contagious,” said Brewmaster Roberts. “We’re all one team and everyone enjoys working together. You don’t even think about the disability part anymore.”

It helps that a PRIDE Industries job coach is on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly.

“I love working with this team,” said coach Aaron Cartwright-Vasquez. “They’re great workers—I have to make sure they take their breaks.” Cartwright-Vasquez provides transportation for those that need it, and makes sure everyone understands their schedules, which can vary from week to week. “They’re waiting for me every morning with a smile on their faces.”

PRIDE Industries provides contract manufacturing services for consumer-packaged goods, electronics, and medical devices. Services include manufacturing, supply chain and logistics, and packaging and fulfillment. Customers range from local businesses like Knee Deep Brewing Company to global powerhouses like Hewlett Packard.

“Knee Deep Brewing has always been proud to have the best people working for it,” the company says on its website. “Without them, we would not be where we are today. With great people, comes great beer!”

Cheers to that!

Juneau Juice Hazy IPA Released As the Latest Year-Round Beer for Alaskan Brewing Company

March 23, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

JUNEAU, Alaska— Alaskan Brewing Company is releasing the popular Juneau Juice Hazy IPA as its latest year-round beer. This juicy Hazy IPA first proved itself as a breakroom favorite of the Brew Crew before graduating to a Rough Draft release and a rotating 16 oz release. Now this hometown hazy is back to stay year-round in Alaskan’s core lineup.

Alaskan Brewing Company Brewer and Juneau Juice Hazy IPA creator Scotty McHenry has been delighted with the beverage’s success. “I think Juneau Juice has been a hit with the locals and tourists alike, people like to drink local. Checking out the local brews is a big part of traveling for me. Anyone outside of Juneau can get a taste of this great capital city, brewed with our pure Alaska water,” McHenry said.

Named after the brewery’s hometown of Juneau, which is surrounded by miles of impassable icefields, fjords, and the lush Tongass rainforest. Lush, wet, and hiding a one-of-a-kind beauty, Juneau Juice Hazy IPA is a juicy reflection of its hometown.

Bright and refreshing Juneau Juice features a combination of Mosaic, Sultana, Strata, and Citra hops with a respectable 6.8% ABV. Heavy dry-hopping and the use of some unmalted grains create a haziness that contributes to the smoothness of this style, and by leaving the beer unfiltered, residual yeast also adds to the full mouthfeel. The concentration of late-addition hops lessens hop bitterness, which accentuates the fruity, tropical flavor of many hop varieties.

“Juneau Juice is a little different from other hazy IPAs because it has the juicy factor of a hazy but also the toasty, nutty, malt character of a West Coast IPA,” McHenry said.

Juneau Juice was originally part of Alaskan Brewing’s Crew Brew series, which allows all employees, from accountants to engineers to human resources, to team up with brewers and brew on our 1-barrel pilot system. Our Crew Brew series encourages creativity and innovation, allowing any of our employees to experiment with wild ideas and local ingredients, making beers that are uniquely Alaskan and super limited. Crew Brews that we think are exceptional can be picked to be made on a larger scale, and Juneau Juice is one of those beers.

“My idea behind Juneau Juice is that I wanted to make a crushable, juicy, biscuity IPA that I could share with my coworkers for our shift beer in the break room. It took a lot of inspiration from one of our past pale ales, both using Victory malt and Simcoe hops,” McHenry said. “I wanted Juneau Juice to have a higher ABV than Big Mountain, up the hop profile, and also use a ton of flaked oats.”

Juneau Juice Hazy IPA will be available in all current Alaskan Brewing Company markets as six-packs, 12-packs, and new 19.2 oz cans.

March 15, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

ATLANTA, Georgia – SweetWater Brewing Company, Atlanta’s craft beer trailblazer and the 10th largest craft brewer in the U.S., announces the launch of Gone Trippin’, a West Coast Style India Pale Ale (IPA) that pays tribute to the bold, hoppy beers SweetWater brought to the South more than 25 years ago. Gone Trippin’ is now available nationally year-round on draft and in 6-packs and 12-packs of 12-ounce cans.

Gone Trippin’ (7% alcohol by volume (ABV)) is assertively hopped with Cascade, Centennial, Crystal, Chinook and Citra varieties. This array of quintessential West Coast hops delivers bitter notes accompanied by pine, citrus and floral aromas that are well balanced by a malty backbone and refreshingly dry finish.

“We crafted this beer as a celebration of the long trip that’s taken us from the West Coast to the Southeast and back again — with many stops in Colorado. We’ve Gone Fishin’ and Gone Phishin’ for years, and now we’re Gone Trippin’. We’re getting back to our roots and absolutely stoked to release this hoppy love letter to Cali, wrapped in a funky tie dyed can,” said Nick Nock, SweetWater’s head brewer. “Gone Trippin’ is a big, yet easy drinking beer that’s incredibly balanced. It’s perfectly bitter, it’s hoppy, but it’s also rounded out with a malty sweetness.”

Gone Trippin’ is now flowing at SweetWater’s flagship taprooms in Atlanta and Fort Collins, Colorado. It’s also available in cans across Colorado, Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia at select retailers, including Total Wine & More, Kroger, Harris Teeter, Ingles, Publix, and Lowes Food. Backwoods Brewing to Open 19-Acre Resort Property Party Acres

March 9, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

CARSON, Washington— Backwoods Brewing releases Party Acres Hazy IPA ahead of opening their 19-acre resort property Party Acres, a playground for lovers of the Gorge.

“We bought the property in 2020,” says owner and CEO Steve Waters, “and have been drawing multiple designs in the sandbox ever since.” They finally landed on a site plan, with Phase 1 being cabins hidden away in the woods in Carson, Washington. The cabins will open this spring, and Phase 2 of Party Acres will be bringing Backwoods’ existing pub and brewery operations on site as well.

Alongside these plans, Backwoods has other fun ideas in the works with an estimated time frame to be decided, including a disc golf course, zip line and potentially an amphitheater for live entertainment.

“We’ve got plans in motion, and are leaving space to dream up exciting ideas for the property and our cozy cabins. With all the activities in the area we are excited to give people more reasons to love coming to play and stay in the Columbia River Gorge.” says owner Debbie Waters.

Party Acres, the beer, is a Hazy IPA made with lush, tropical hops, and is light enough to be enjoyed on any outdoor adventure. Backwoods has been playing with the recipe on draft for over a year, and is finally ready to take it to prime time in 12 ounce cans. It will take their hazy slot, previously occupied by Hazy in the Gorge.

“When it came time to name the beer, we thought about it for 5 seconds before thinking, ‘Why don’t we name it after the property?’” said Tom Waters, COO and owner of Backwoods, “Party Acres has been a dream of my dad’s (fellow owner Jim Waters) since before I was born.”

“When I was a kid, my buddies and I always wanted a place we could go to get away,” says Jim.

The fabled earthly paradise would be called Party Acres. “It’s pretty exciting to be making that dream a reality. But what we’re doing here is going to be a little bit more classy than what me and my buddies had in mind back then.” Born from the vision of a collective place for family and friends to celebrate the good times, Party Acres will be a resort with something for everyone.

“And in the spirit of Backwoods, we’re aiming for the blend we always try to strike of woodsy and adventurous, while also laid-back and comfortable,” says Steve Waters. “We want to be the place you think of when you want to get away.”

Look for the Party Acres beer in stores and on tap at the Backwoods pubs right now – and plan to book a night or two at the Party Acres cabins beginning in May 2023.

The El Segundo Brewing/Steve Austin Partnership

The first collaboration between El Segundo and Austin came about when the wrestling icon visited the brewery with a buddy. He was already a fan of El Segundo’s Mayberry IPA and after chatting with founder Rob Croxall he shared that he had an interest in pursuing a brewery project of his own. From that conversation a collaboration ensued and ultimately Broken Skull IPA – the name inspired by Austin’s wrestling background – came to life. Austin was very involved in the development of the IPA and the flavor profile reflects his input. The collaboration was incredibly successful and El Segundo has dramatically expanded their distribution footprint due in large part to the success of Broken Skull IPA. Following the tremendous success of Broken Skull IPA, El Segundo expanded its partnership with Austin in 2022 with the release of Broken Skull American Lager.

Broken Skull Double IPA

Answering the fans’ call, the collaborators have created Broken Skull Double IPA, a limited release beer with 8.0% ABV. Centennial Hops – along with Citra, Chinook and Cascade – give it more of a citrus punch, and notes of candied citrus, papaya and underripe mango are balanced with a clean malt backbone.

“Think of it like the big brother to Broken Skull IPA,” said El Segundo Founder Rob Croxall. “Broken Skull Double IPA offers a heavyweight punch with a cruiserweight body that won’t weigh you down. Can I get a double ‘Hell Yea’?”

The Double IPA will be available for purchase this spring in the following retailers: HEB; Total Wine & More; Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Finer Foods; Central Market; Albertsons; and your favorite independent beer shops.

About El Segundo Brewing

El Segundo Brewing is an independent craft brewery founded by Rob Croxall and Tom Kelley in El Segundo, California 2011. In 2014, El Segundo formed a partnership with Steve Austin to launch the Broken Skull Beer IPA. The incredible success of that release resulted in the expansion of the brewery capacity and output and an ongoing partnership between Austin and El Segundo.

SAN DIEGO, California— Modern Times Beer announces the launch of Pause for Effect Hazy Double India Pale Ale, the first in a series of highly innovative and incredibly delicious Double IPAs planned for 2023.

Pause for Effect took years to develop, using a process of estery Juice yeast, mid-fermentation dry hop, and secret mineral additions. Concentrated hop products including Mosaic Cryo and Citra Incognito add layers of citrus and tropical aromas that will continue to transform throughout the life of the beer.

“We wanted to create something that was as drinkable as it was boundary-pushing,” said Andrew Schwartz, Director of Product Innovation and Development. “Using the combination of cutting-edge hop products and time-tested techniques we were able to make something both alluring and high ABV, simple and aromatically boastful.”Pause for Effect (8.0% ABV) is a limited release available on tap and in 4-pack cans to-go at Modern Times Beer locations in Point Loma, North Park, and Encinitas and at fine retailers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, and Washington.

COLD AS (ZOMBIE) ICE – Three Floyds Brewing to Release New Undead Double Pale Ale

February 21, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

MUNSTER, Indiana— Three Floyds Brewing’s newest beer, Zombie Ice, will make its debut on Thursday, February 23. Crafted with an unholy amount of Citra hops, the undead double pale ale comes in at 8.5% ABV and 55 IBU – a bolder spin on their award-winning Zombie Dust, which continues to make waves in the craft beer industry since its release in 2010.

“The beer is exactly what you’d think,” says Brewmaster Chris Boggess. “A bigger, punchier version of itself. Compared to Zombie Dust, the aroma has strong notes of orange marmalade and tropical citrus. The bitterness is firm, but it’s still very drinkable at 8.5%.”

The newest brew will be available in 6-packs of 12oz cans, 19.2oz cans, and draft. Zombie Ice will also be featured in Three Floyds’ first variety pack, which includes three core brews and one rotating beer exclusive to the 12-pack.

The Zombie Ice can and package were designed with art from the Alpha King comic collection, a collaboration between Three Floyds’ founder Nick Floyd, writer Brian Azzarello, and artist Simon Bisley. The blacked-out packaging features the vibrant Zombie Ice logo and a skull with piercing blue eyes.

The brewery is hosting a Zombie Ice release party on Thursday, February 23 at Kaiser Tiger (1415 West Randolph Street, Chicago.) The event starts at 5pm and will feature ice curling, a beer ice luge, giveaways, and various Three Floyds specials throughout the night.

Zombie Ice will be available in all Three Floyds markets, which includes 19 states + Washington D.C., and at the brewery’s retail kiosk (9750 Indiana Pkwy, Munster, IN.) Retailers and on-premise accounts can be located through the brewery’s beer finder.
