Big Grove Celebrates RAGBRAI 50th Anniversary with Statewide “Gold Can Giveaway”

May 15, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

IOWA CITY, Iowa— Big Grove Brewery, the official brewery of RAGBRAI and the maker of Iowa’s top-selling hazy IPA Easy Eddy, is commemorating the 50th and golden anniversary of the oldest, largest, and longest multi-day bicycle ride in the world, by releasing specialty packs and golden cans of Easy Eddy throughout the state. These gold cans, if found by a lucky fan, can win them a golden jersey to wear on the great bicycle ride across Iowa.

“My favorite movie growing up was ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’,” said Matt Phippen, RAGBRAI ride director. “This being our golden anniversary we wanted to find new ways to partner with Big Grove and developed the golden can idea based on the movie. We are looking forward to seeing the excitement people have finding their golden cans in Easy Eddy 12-packs this spring.”

With 12-packs already hitting stores, Big Grove and RAGBRAI are offering 150 prizes to encourage people to get out there and enjoy the ride on July 22-29th; whose registration is still open. The first 100 consumers to find a single Easy Eddy gold can tucked inside specially marked 12-packs will win a custom edition RAGBRAI golden jersey, and the remaining 50 will receive Big Grove swag. Check shelves for Easy Eddy 12-packs featuring the RAGBRAI L logo this month.

“This is one of the coolest promotions we’ve ever done, and made better as it was a collaborative effort with RAGBRAI,” said Matt Swift, Big Grove’s CEO. “As always, Big Grove is proudly rooted in Iowa and as an iconic Iowa event, we are happy to support RAGBRAI. We can’t wait for these packs to be out in the market and we’re excited for our fans as we get closer to RAGBRAI this summer.”

Since 2019, Big Grove has been the official brewery of RAGBRAI, supporting the route with signs, high-fives, and a special beer release called Tailwind Golden Ale. “Overnight towns get their town name printed around the top of the Tailwind can,” noted Swift. “It makes it a collector’s item for the riders and Iowa towns.” Tailwind Golden Ale is releasing in early May in a custom metallic gold color to go along with the theme for the ride.

About Big Grove Brewery

Big Grove Brewery is among the top craft beer producers in Iowa and ranks in the top 3% for barrel production nationally. In 2013, the brewery got its start as a 3.5-barrel brewhouse in Solon, Iowa, and focused on freshly made craft beer and elevated pub cuisine. Four years later, the brewery opened a 28,000-square-foot production facility, serving as an anchor for the Iowa City Riverfront Crossings redevelopment project. Big Grove has received multiple craft brewing medals including a gold medal for Easy Eddy, its flagship Hazy IPA. For “Gold Can Giveaway” no purchase is necessary to participate in the sweepstakes. To enter, fans can send in a postcard labeled ‘RAGBRAI 50’ with their name and return address to Big Grove Brewery, 1225 S. Gilbert St., Iowa City, IA before 6/16/23.

About RAGBRAI

RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest, and longest recreational touring bicycle ride in the world. Started in 1973 by Des Moines Register reporters John Karras and Donald Kaul, RAGBRAI is a seven-day bicycle tour that goes from the Missouri River to the Mississippi River with stops in overnight towns along the way. In 2023, RAGBRAI celebrates its 50th ride across Iowa.

Brewery Saint X Now Open in Downtown New Orleans

May 1, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Located in downtown New Orleans, Brewery Saint X is a state-of-the-art brewery, bar, and restaurant from Neighborhood Restaurant Group. Helmed by James Beard Foundation Award-nominated Beverage Director Greg Engert, Director of Brewing Operations Ro Guenzel, and Head Brewer Alex Flores, Saint X aims to capture the innovative spirit and history of craft beer alongside a robust wine list, cocktail program, and food menu.

With a nod toward traditional lager brewing and cask ale production, Brewery Saint X showcases a wide array of brewing techniques with a particular reverence for the classics, from German- and Czech-inspired lagers to British cask-style beers. The offerings zero in on both small-batch, full-flavored ales and lagers as well as intentional, slow-production processes. Hop-forward brews, experimental sours, and sessionable ales are constants in their rotation. Through careful ingredient selection, Saint X maximizes flavor nuance and strives to create a memorable beer experience throughout.

The wine list places an emphasis on responsibly sourced, small-batch wine spanning from less-common styles to old favorites. In leaning toward New World-style wines, Saint X features wines from California and Oregon wineries including Vending Machine Winery, Center of Effort, Field Recordings, Forlorn Hope, Slo Down Wines and Fossil Point, and also a handful of Oregon wines from Teutonic Wine Company, Patton Valley, and Omero. Craft cocktails and frozens utilize spirits from smaller distillers, leaning into unexpected flavors and playful twists like the Brisket Old Fashioned, which features brisket-washed bourbon and cherry bark vanilla bitters, and the Sweet Tea Batida, a frozen mix of bourbon, sweet tea, condensed milk, and blended whole limes that pays tribute to Brazilian limonada.

To complement the libations, Executive Chef Shannon Bingham’s culinary offerings encompass craveable, shareable dishes like housemade charcuterie, with the smoker as a throughline between Saint X and its connecting sister concept, Devil Moon BBQ. Dishes of note include the Smoked Pork Belly with crawfish étouffée and stone ground grits and Smoked Beef Cheeks with salsa verde and french fries. Elevated bar snacks like Pimento Cheese Boudin Balls with green tomato jam and Smoked Chicken Wings are available along with a lineup of inventive sandwiches, like the Shrimp Remoulade Poboy with citrus-poached Gulf shrimp, white remoulade, and fried green tomatoes and the Saint X Cheeseburger with two house-ground patties with American cheese, pickles & fancy sauce on brioche. A handful of salads is unexpected but welcome, featuring Red Cabbage with mint, cilantro, spicy peanuts, crispy shallots, and coconut-lime vinaigrette as a refreshing go-with to the heartier fare.

Brewery Saint X is led by a team of leaders who tap into extensive nationwide experience while drawing on deep roots in Louisiana. They share a commitment to creating inclusive, relaxed spaces while maintaining uncompromising standards on their craft, bringing a new and imaginative approach to New Orleans’ already vibrant bar and restaurant scene.

  • Greg Engert (Partner and Beverage Director, Neighborhood Restaurant Group) brings to Saint X nearly two decades of experience in the craft beer and beverage realm. He has been named a Food & Wine’s Sommelier of the Year and a StarChefs Rising Star.
  • Ro Guenzel (Director of Brewing Operations, Neighborhood Restaurant Group)
  • Alex Flores (Head Brewer, Brewery Saint X)
  • Shannon Bingham (Executive Chef, Brewery Saint X and Devil Moon BBQ) joins Saint X after helping to open Blue Oak BBQ and, later, launching his own concept, Emmylou’s BBQ. The acclaimed pitmaster led Blue Oak to win the title of 2017 Hogs for the Cause Grand Champion, though he draws equal inspiration from a fine dining background honed at Gautreau’s, Ivy, and Chateau du Lac.
  • Michael Babin (Principal, Neighborhood Restaurant Group) founded NRG in 1997. Since then, it has grown to encompass more than twenty-five concepts in DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and New York. Devil Moon BBQ and Brewery Saint X mark a homecoming for the Louisiana native.

The award-winning New Orleans architecture firm Bell Butler artfully designed Brewery Saint X to be grounded in the longstanding tradition of breweries. Directly inspired by distilleries, the palette features concrete, unlacquered brass, steels, and coppers. With lofty ceilings, exposed wood, and zinc tabletops, the space evokes the craftsmanship of old-world Europe in a thoroughly modern setting. The bar has a commanding presence with a dozen taps alongside a vast wine selection, and hundreds of bottles of liquor that supply a robust cocktail program. Tall windows afford guests an unobscured glimpse into the brewery, whose kettles are celebrated in the design, along with hand-crafted custom furniture, including deep leather booths and brass lamps, along with art that emphasizes local artisans.

Genesee Brewery’s Tropical Pineapple Kolsch Returns, Mixing it Up as Ruby Red Kolsch’s Perfect Combination Companion

April 28, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

ROCHESTER, New York— The Captain delivers… again! Tropical Pineapple Kolsch is now available in stores. Genesee Brewery’s Tropical Pineapple Kolsch celebrates its second year, after scoring the number one spot in the Brand-New Category in Upstate New York* in 2022. With its tropical pineapple flavor, this bright golden ale has quickly become the perfect companion to Genesee’s modern classic, Ruby Red Kolsch. Tropical Pineapple Kolsch is available in 12-packs of 12-ounce cans and on draft at select locations.

“When we launched Tropical Pineapple Kolsch, we worried that it would cannibalize sales of Ruby Red Kolsch. But the exact opposite happened,” said Inga Grote-Ebbs, Genesee brand director. “Fans purchased Tropical Pineapple Kolsch right alongside Ruby Red Kolsch, leading to the creation of a brand-new beer dubbed the “Captain’s Mix.”

After the launch of Tropical Pineapple Kolsch, Genesee fans started combining Tropical Pineapple and Ruby Red Kolsch to create what Genesee now calls the “Captain’s Mix.” Fans became their own brewmaster, combining both Kolsches into one glass. The amount of each Kolsch added is up to the individual, but the result is the same for everyone; a personally customized and balanced tropical summer beer.

The Genesee Brew House recently adopted the consumer trend. People can now try a “Captain’s Mix,” at the Brew House. While there, consumers can also pick up new Genesee Kolsch swag featuring the quirky, boat-loving, pipe-smoking captain. Tropical Pineapple Kolsch merchandise is available for purchase.

Hi-Wire Brewing to Open Tiki Bar and Speakeasy in Asheville

April 27, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

ASHEVILLE, North Carolina— Hi-Wire Brewing, known for crafting unique and approachable craft beers, is excited to announce the opening of ‘The Tiki Easy Bar,’ a new tiki bar and speakeasy hidden behind Hi-Wire’s South Slope Specialty Brewery in Asheville, North Carolina. The tropical-themed bar is set to open to the public in July 2023.

“I have become obsessed with tiki bars and drinks since the Covid-19 pandemic began,” said Chris Frosaker, co-owner of Hi-Wire Brewing and the driving force behind Hi-Wire’s new concept. Frosaker continued, “Our world seems to be getting crazier every day, and I love the escapism a tiki bar provides, where you can enter a new world and forget about your day-to-day life with a strong drink in hand.” Combining this new passion with some newly-acquired space at the craft brewery’s original location, ‘The Tiki Easy Bar’ was born.

The Tiki Easy Bar aims to be Western North Carolina’s only true tiki bar, transporting visitors to an island oasis filled with danger, mystery, and lots of rum. Expect traditional tiki decor, one of the largest rum selections in the state, and a rotating tiki-only cocktail menu with more than thirty varieties of tiki drinks.

The speakeasy’s menu combines a slew of classic tiki cocktails, modern tiki drinks designed in-house, and a selection of island-inspired mocktails. Chris Frosaker’s go-to drink will, of course, make an appearance or two. “I am obsessed with the Mai Tai, which happens to be the most misunderstood and bastardized cocktail in history,” said Frosaker. To celebrate the co-owner’s passion for a proper Mai Tai, The Tiki Easy Bar will feature two Mai Tai options at all times, and every Monday, bartenders will experiment with rums from around the world paired with a variety of curacao liqueurs for the bar’s ‘Mai Tai Mondays.’

Hi-Wire Brewing is no stranger to opening new, fun-filled drinking establishments with soon-to-be eleven locations across the Southeast and Midwest dedicated to serving Hi-Wire’s award-winning craft beers. However, The Tiki Easy Bar will be unlike anything the brewery has done before with exotic jungle decor, tiki drink concoctions, and a secret entrance. “What is related, though, is one of our company’s non-negotiables of creating fun – The Tiki Easy Bar will definitely not be short on fun,” said Frosaker. With mesmerizing flames and occasional lightning and thunder, this Asheville oasis will transport thrill-seeking explorers to paradise and leave them filled with wonder and enticing island nectar.

The tiki bar will occupy a 2500-square-foot space through the back door of Hi-Wire’s South Slope Specialty Brewery, an area of the building that has not been previously open to the public. “We have operated our South Slope brewery as a specialty facility since 2016, making the bulk of our beer down the street at our Biltmore Village Production Brewery,” said Frosaker, “but when our landlord decided to retire last summer and offered us the chance to purchase the building where Hi-Wire first started ten years ago, it was a no brainer to cement our roots where it all began.”

To access The Tiki Easy Bar, guests must venture through tanks and barrels of the brewery until they uncover the secret passage which will lead them through the jungle to an island oasis beyond. There will not be an exterior sign on the building pointing the way, so only adventure-seekers and curious cocktail-lovers will discover the bar’s secrets hidden behind the brewery.

The Tiki Easy Bar is set to become one of the most innovative and exciting additions to the Asheville drinking scene, attracting visitors from around the region. The bar will open in the summer of 2023 and will be located at 197 Hilliard Ave, Asheville, N.C. Frosaker teased, “We’ve put a lot of thought and planning into every detail, from the decor to the drink menu, and we can’t wait for people to discover it for themselves.”

Construction of The Tiki Easy Bar has already begun.

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. Partners with Quail Distributing

April 26, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PHOENIX, Arizona – Quail Distributing, a leading alcohol distributor and wholesaler, today announced it would partner with Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. to bring the brewery’s unique, nature-inspired beers to a wider audience in Arizona.

Founded in 2013, Arizona Wilderness is unique among breweries for its steadfast commitment to environmentalism and its message to customers: “Drink Like You Care.” Their beers are made with local ingredients (often foraged from the wilderness itself) and are all made using Arizona-grown Sinagua Malt, which helps save millions of gallons of water in the state each year.

Ten years in, Arizona Wilderness operates across three locations: the original Gilbert brewpub, a European-inspired beer garden in Downtown Phoenix, and Woodnotes, a wild ale production and barrel-aging facility in Gilbert. The brewery is consistently rated the best in Arizona and among the top 100 breweries worldwide. Despite its growth and success, Wilderness remains true to its mission to create beers with locally grown, natural ingredients that inspire purpose and passion, driving fans to become a force for good in Arizona and beyond.

“Arizona Wilderness has long been a brewery that we admire,” says Shawn Hillman, Director of Independent Craft for Quail Distributing. “Their passion for brewing great beer with a focus on quality and sustainability is what sets them apart from other breweries. We look forward to bringing their exceptional beers to even more people throughout Arizona.”

Through this partnership, Quail Distributing will now bring the incredible line of Wilderness beers to a wider audience in Arizona. Starting in May, drinkers across the state can expect to see more of the brewery’s core beers, such as the award-winning hazy IPA, La Ciudad; the irreverent honey blonde ale, Don’t F*** It Up; and the I-can’t-believe-it’s-non-alcoholic IPA, Arizo[na]. Excitingly, Quail will also expand the availability of Wilderness’ large (and growing) portfolio of barrel-aged sour ales, including the lambic-inspired wild ale, Camp Coolship, and the legendary peach-infused saison, Sonoran Prince.

“Partnering with Quail allows us to grow and share our passion for brewing adventurous beers that truly represent the Arizona wilderness,” says Jonathan Buford, founder of Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. “We’re thrilled to join forces with a distribution team that shares our values and will help bring our beer to more craft beer lovers.”

California Wild Ales has even more in store for their fans, as they have announced plans to move their production facility to the neighboring community of Point Loma, with the new location set to open this spring. The move will allow the brewery to increase its ability to bring its innovative craft beers to even more people.

“We’re excited to be moving to a closer facility that will allow us to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with craft beer,” says co-founder Bill DeWitt. “We’re committed to creating exceptional beers, and this move will allow us to do that on an even larger scale.”

As the May the 4th Star Wars celebration approaches, California Wild Ales is gearing up to welcome beer lovers and Star Wars fans alike for a day of interstellar fun and flavor. Whether you’re a die-hard Star Wars fan or simply a lover of great beer, this event is not to be missed.

May the force be with you, and we hope to see you at California Wild Ales on May the 4th!

Bravus Brewing Continues Rapid Distribution Expansion Across Midwestern, Southern, and Northeastern States

April 26, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

ANAHEIM, California – Bravus, America’s first brewery dedicated solely to producing premium non-alcoholic craft beer, has announced its continued market expansion to three U.S. regions with Anheuser Busch, Miller Coors, and Craft Independent distribution. New territories include Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Texas, and New York. This expansion increases the brewery’s portfolio footprint to millions of non-alcoholic beer fans across 19 states.

Building upon its success, the award-winning brand already has strong, lasting wholesale partnerships covering California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Tennessee, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Orders are ongoing, with new accounts continually being added regionally and nationally.

“This is an exciting time for the company and our brand,” said Philip Brandes, founder and CEO, Bravus Brewing Co. “We have received repeated feedback from consumers and retailers in various regions eagerly anticipating the availability of our premium non-alcoholic craft beers. To meet this incredible demand, we have been working tirelessly to establish a strong wholesaler network by partnering with best-in-class distributors to bring our premium non-alcoholic craft beer to these important markets.”

New distribution partners for Bravus include Gasko Meyer (New York State), S.K.I. Beer (New York City); Zink Distributing Company (Indiana); Chas Seligman Distributing (Kentucky); Southeast Beverage Company & Ohio Eagle Distributing (Ohio); and L&F Distributors (Texas).

“Non-alcoholic craft beer is becoming a popular choice for adults looking to change things up. Some look to move towards healthier, more mindful drinking, whereas others want to take a break from their regular drinking routine,” continued Brandes. “Be it to rehydrate after an intense trail run or to crack a cold one at a backyard gathering with friends and family, the non-alcoholic category is experiencing staggering demand.”

Crafted in Anaheim, California, award-winning Bravus brews a wide variety of premium non-alcoholic craft beers to satisfy just about every beer lover and those thirsty to try something new. The less than .5% ABV beers are 100% vegan, brewed to reduce gluten, and contain approximately 100 calories per 12-ounce can. Bravus’ core line-up of beers includes a West Coast IPA, Blood Orange IPA, Golden Light, and Peanut Butter Dark.

About Bravus

Founded in 2015, Bravus Brewing was born from a never-ending pursuit of pushing boundaries, overcoming obstacles, and forever changing the beer landscape. North America’s first brewery solely dedicated to producing non-alcoholic craft beer perfected its proprietary brewing process over many years to accomplish what was previously deemed impossible: brewing an award-winning non-alcoholic premium craft beer to compete alongside its alcoholic counterparts.
