Athletic Brewing Company’s Two For The Trails Grant Program Wins Double Gold At Halo Awards

May 12, 2025 by Spencer Mapes

MILFORD, Conn., and SAN DIEGO, CA – Athletic Brewing Company, America’s largest dedicated non-alcoholic brewer, today announced that its Two For The Trails environmental grant program received two 2025 Gold Halo Awards for Best Cause Product Initiative and Best Sustainability or Conservation Initiative.

Now in its 23rd year, The Halo Awards, presented by Engage for Good, are the first and most prestigious honor for excellence in corporate social impact. They recognize the most innovative and effective partnerships between companies and nonprofits, celebrating organizations that are going beyond good intentions to deliver measurable change for both business and society.

Athletic Brewing was recognized for its commitment to protecting and restoring outdoor spaces worldwide through its Two For The Trails environmental grant program, which contributed up to $2 million to more than 170 projects in 2024.

“We started Athletic with the belief that business can be a powerful force for good,” said Bill Shufelt, Co-Founder and CEO of Athletic Brewing. “Two For The Trails is our way of giving back, and creating a positive ripple effect that’s felt for generations to come. This recognition is a huge honor and a testament to the amazing work of our nonprofit grant recipients.”

Established as a founding principle of the Athletic Brewing business plan, and named in honor of Shufelt’s family ritual of toasting post-trail adventures with two brews, the Two For The Trails program has grown into the largest annual environmental grant program in the craft brewing industry. To date, the program has contributed more than $6.3 million to trails and outdoor spaces.

“What makes Two For The Trails truly special is the diversity and integrity of the projects we support,” said Cara Wilson, Impact Manager at Athletic Brewing. “From regenerative land management and invasive species removal to improving ADA accessibility on trails, we’re committed to funding conservation work that’s thoughtful, impactful, and inclusive. With projects in 46 states and three countries so far, we’re aiming to expand our reach to all 50 states by the end of 2025 — helping more people connect with and care for the outdoors.”

Athletic Brewing’s commitment to sustainability and philanthropy extends beyond Two For The Trails. The company maintains exceptional levels of water recapture and efficiency at its custom breweries in Connecticut and California, donates up to $100,000 annually to meaningful causes through its IMPACT Brew Series, and is proudly a Certified B Corporation™.

Earlier this year, Athletic Brewing released a short film celebrating the work of three recent Two For The Trails grant recipients to raise awareness about the unique environmental concerns that each nonprofit encounters. The film is available to view on YouTube.

Nonprofit organizations interested in applying for the next round of Two For The Trails funding can sign up on the Athletic Brewing Company website. Applications open summer 2025.

The 2025 Halo Awards were presented live on April 24 at the Engage for Good Conference in Palm Springs, CA, where Athletic Brewing accepted the awards in person.

Athletic Brewing Reimagines the New Year Reset with ‘Athletic January’ Campaign

December 30, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

MILFORD, CT and SAN DIEGO, CA — Athletic Brewing Company, America’s largest dedicated non-alcoholic brewer, is reimagining the January reset with the launch of its latest campaign, “Athletic January.”

Drawing inspiration from Athletic’s trailblazing co-founder and COO, John Walker, who revolutionized non-alcoholic brewing by developing a new method for making NA brews, Athletic’s January campaign invites consumers to rethink their routines while experiencing the bold taste of Athletic’s award-winning brews. By harnessing the power of reimagination, consumers can shift their focus to what they reap rather than what they relinquish, inspiring a more enjoyable and fulfilling start to the new year.

“At Athletic, we believe a reset doesn’t have to mean giving up flavor or fun,” said Andrew Katz, Chief Marketing Officer of Athletic. “January has historically been marked by what you’re giving up instead of what you’re gaining. In the spirit of always innovating, we’re kicking off 2025 by inspiring drinkers to reimagine what’s possible, cherish moments of mindfulness and embrace moderation all year long.”

Athletic January: There’s Nothing Dry About It

To jumpstart Athletic January, the company will conduct a widespread sampling initiative, sharing its brews at hundreds of activations, retail samplings, and community events across North America and the UK. From January 10–17, Ask For Athletic Week takes center stage, making it easier than ever to enjoy a great-tasting brew. Customers who are 21+ can get a $5 rebate on one 12 oz. can or draft pour of Athletic at retailers across the U.S.*

Athletic is also enhancing its custom moderation tool, “Track Record,” which allows users to set personalized goals and chart their progress over time. Users can now choose how many dry days they want each month and monitor their momentum in real time.

Market Insights & Media Investment

According to global market research, 64% of consumers claim to be moderating their alcohol consumption1. Meanwhile, recent polling in the U.S. indicated that 26% of Americans plan to drink less in 2025, and 36% of U.S. drinkers plan to reduce or eliminate alcohol in January2.

To support the Athletic January campaign and continue driving brand awareness, Athletic is embarking on a multi-million dollar strategic media plan that includes the debut of new commercials across high-impact television, as well as out-of-home placements in key markets, streaming audio and podcast advertisements, digital media, and influencer endorsements.

Brewing Excellence & Category Leadership

Launched commercially in 2018, Athletic re-engineered nearly every step of the brewing process and developed a proprietary brewing method to make NA brews that rival full-strength alcohol counterparts.

“Unlike traditional methods that adjust a single part of the process, our approach includes 10–12 changes across all brewing stages,” Walker said. “The result is a finished product with a distinct flavor profile from other NA brews made using a handful of traditional techniques. Our innovative processes, some of which are patent-pending, showcase craftsmanship that is extremely rare and incredibly unique in the NA beer industry.”

An industry pioneer, Athletic has grown from one of the smallest breweries in America, producing just 875 barrels in 2018, to a top 20 U.S. brewery that sold over 258,000 barrels in 20233. With off-premise dollar sales growing by more than 50% year-to-date, Athletic currently holds over 19% market share within the non-alcoholic beer category4. The company now boasts three of the top 10 best-selling NA beers in the country in flagships Run Wild IPA, Upside Dawn Golden, and Free Wave Hazy IPA5.

“By transforming the quality and marketing of NA brews, we’ve made moderation more accessible and unlocked new occasions for the brewing industry,” said Athletic Co-Founder & CEO Bill Shufelt. “From the very beginning, our mission has been to redefine what’s possible and be the best part of our customers’ days. January is the perfect time to show new consumers why Athletic is the most decorated NA brewer and demonstrate how moderation can complement their lives all year long.”

Deschutes Brewery Introduces Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA to the Market

March 19, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

BEND, Oregon, March 19, 2024 – With over three decades of experience brewing delicious craft beers and delivering award-winning innovations, Deschutes Brewery has unveiled its next chapter of investment in the future of non-alcoholic brewing with the introduction of Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA. Crafted entirely in-house through a partnership with Sustainable Beverage Technologies (SBT) and utilizing the company’s patented BrewVo® technology in combination with Deschutes’ proprietary brewing methods, this groundbreaking technology allows Deschutes to create the best-tasting flavor-forward non-alcoholic beer on the market. The introduction of Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA comes on the heels of Deschutes’ first packaged non-alcoholic beer, Black Butte Non-Alcoholic, which quickly became the brewery’s highest rate-of-sale six-pack.

The non-alcoholic beer category is revolutionizing the beer industry and grew 163% in dollar sales from 2019 to 2023. According to a Mintel study, 75% of Gen Z and Millennials are interested in non-alcoholic options with taste and flavor being the number one attribute they’re looking for in products, and a separate nationwide survey shows that 94% of non-alcoholic beer drinkers also drink beer with alcohol.

“We believe that our fans deserve non-alcoholic options that taste amazing. At Deschutes, we are all for beer and proud to make beer for all,” said Julie Galbraith, CMO of Deschutes Brewery. “Our two brands, Fresh Squeezed IPA and Black Butte Porter, are top-performing brands for a reason and we’re thrilled to be able to give our customers the flexibility they deserve without sacrificing the craft beer experience they love by introducing them to our non-alcoholic versions of their favorite Deschutes IPA and Porter.”

Launch of Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA

Crafted using Sustainable Beverage Technologies patented BrewVo® equipment and a proprietary non-alcoholic brewing process, Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA is brilliantly balanced and features the same Citra and Mosaic hops as the original, delivering refreshing notes of bright citrus and tropical fruit, with less than 0.5% ABV. Both Fresh Squeezed brands’ packaging designs have recently been updated and now feature a similar but lighter and brighter look, with changes to accent colors, fonts, and graphics. The result of over five years of research, development, and equipment investment, Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA has been meticulously perfected and is now available nationwide at major
retailers and online at DeschutesBrewery.com in six-pack 12oz cans.

Reintroduction of Black Butte Non-Alcoholic

Inspired by America’s favorite craft porter, Black Butte, Black Butte Non-Alcoholic was Deschutes’ first packaged non-alcoholic beer. Brewed using a specialty chocolate malt, it presents a velvety texture with creamy foam and delivers surprising flavor complexity with tastes of chocolate, a malty aroma with atouch of coffee sweetness. Black Butte Non-Alcoholic has already secured eight international Awards, including a 2022 World Beer Cup® silver medal in the ‘Non-Alcohol Beer’ category. The original Black Butte Porter and Black Butte Non-Alcoholic both feature updated packaging artwork with illustrations by artist Sam Larson.

This announcement marks a significant milestone in the brewery’s commitment to innovation in the non-alcoholic space and is the result of over five years of research and development and over $5 million invested. Deschutes is the first brewery of scale to have installed BrewVo® technology along with the necessary end-to-end technical capabilities which enables the brewery to gently remove alcohol from the beer while preserving the sensory elements that contribute to a full-fidelity craft beer experience.

Deschutes has also installed a 65,000-pound tunnel pasteurizer, a necessary step to ensuring the safety and quality of its non-alcoholic beers, giving the brewery a unique advantage to maintain full control of supply which enhances their ability to deliver on consumer demand; many other non-alcoholic brewers rely on third-party cross-brewing, co-packing and off-site tunnel pasteurization.

“Crafting a full fidelity non-alcoholic beer that delivers the flavor, aroma and mouthfeel of a great craft beer involves a lot more than just removing the alcohol. When we began our research and development five years ago it became clear to us that the technologies in broad use to produce non-alcoholic beer all led to certain degrees of sacrifice on sensory experience of the final product. We didn’t want to accept sacrifice in the beer drinking experience and sought a better way. Our patented and proprietary process, rooted in decades of brewing experience, ensures that our non-alcoholic products offer an excellent craft beer experience without the alcohol,” said Peter Skrbek, CEO of Deschutes Brewery. “With the launch of Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA and the installation of the BrewVo® technology, as well as our tunnel pasteurizer, we aim to redefine the craft beer experience for our fans. We want our non-alcoholic beers to be excellent when compared to any beer with or without alcohol. Gone are the days of our fans and customers needing to make trade-offs in their beer drinking experience based on whether a beer has
alcohol.”

Deschutes Brewery’s Fresh Squeezed IPA, Fresh Squeezed Non-Alcoholic IPA, Black Butte Porter and Black Butte Non-Alcoholic are available nationwide at select retailers, bars, and restaurants. For more information, use the “beer finder” to find the closest retailer or visit DeschutesBrewery.com to purchase the new non-alcoholic options online.

Boulevard Brewing Co. Adds Two New Options to Its Lineup of Non-Alcoholic Offerings

January 3, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Boulevard Brewing Company is expanding its lineup of non-alcoholic offerings with the addition of two new products just in time for dry January. Kansas City’s hometown brewery introduced its first offering in the space in 2021 with the release of Flying Start Non-Alcoholic IPA. As the demand for options has continued to rise in the craft beer industry, Boulevard is excited to add both Non-Alcoholic Wheat with Lemon and Quirk Non-Alcoholic Superfruit Seltzer in 2024.

“There has been a significant shift in drinking culture over the years, which has resulted in a growing demand for non-alcoholic options,” said Bobby Dykstra, executive vice president of sales & marketing for Duvel USA. “We aim to provide a diverse range of craft offerings that provide a rich and satisfying experience, appealing to all occasions and lifestyles.”

Flying Start has received several industry accolades since launching as a year-round offering. Boulevard took home Silver in the IPA Alcohol-Free/Low category at the Brussels Beer Challenge in 2022 and more recently received Silver in the non-alcoholic category at the U.S. Open Beer Championship in 2023 and Gold in the non-alcoholic category at the Beverage Institute Ratings World Beer Championship in 2023.

Building off the success of Flying Start, Boulevard recently released Non-Alcoholic Wheat with Lemon. Unfiltered Wheat has been Boulevard’s most popular beer for more than three decades and with many consumers’ preferences shifting toward non-alcoholic options, the brewery has taken the Midwest favorite and reimagined it with less than .5% ABV, and a flavorful infusion of lemon. This new brew is now available year-round in six-packs of 12-oz. cans.

In addition to Boulevard’s beer offerings, its Quirk Hard Seltzer line has quickly become the top-selling seltzer in the Kansas City market and nearly one-third of the brewery’s overall sales. In the spirit of giving consumers a variety of options for all occasions, Quirk is also launching its first non-alcoholic seltzer. Supercharged with the superfruit flavors of yellow papaya and acai berry juices, Quirk Non-Alcoholic Superfruit Seltzer brings the award-winning flavor of Quirk to all occasions and lifestyles. At just 25 calories, five grams of carbohydrate and less than one gram of sugar, this new flavor is no different from all other Quirk seltzers being made with real fruit juice and ingredient-driven flavor combinations. This new limited release is available now in six-packs of 12-oz. cans.

Whether you’re aiming to start new personal goals in the new year or simply looking for alternative options to mix into your beverage routine, each of these non-alcoholic offerings will allow you to indulge without sacrificing the flavor of your favorite hometown beverages.

AleSmith Extends Non-Alcoholic Lineup With New NA Speedway

December 14, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

SAN DIEGO, California— AleSmith Brewing Company is excited to announce the introduction of Non-Alcoholic Speedway, a dark brew based off the brewery’s legacy iconic Speedway Stout. Following the successful release of their Non-Alcoholic IPA, AleSmith is thrilled to expand their non-alcoholic offerings with this new addition.

Non-Alcoholic Speedway is a dark brew with coffee less than 0.5% ABV that offers the same bold flavor and complexity as the beloved Speedway Stout, featuring notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and roasted malts. Crafted with the highest quality ingredients, Non-Alcoholic Speedway provides a tasteful experience, without the alcohol.

The inspiration behind creating a non-alcoholic beer came from the changing consumer preferences observed by AleSmith. With an increasing demand for non-alcoholic options in their Tasting Room, the brewery wanted to cater to those guests while maintaining the essence of a craft beer. The feedback received from customers and industry peers has been overwhelmingly positive. Their Non-Alcoholic IPA also received recognition this year through awards, including a Bronze at the California Craft Brewers Cup and a Silver at the San Diego Beer News Awards.

While the Non-Alcoholic Speedway and IPA have been well-received, AleSmith is committed to developing even more non-alcoholic options. Test batches are currently underway at the brewery, with plans to introduce a seasonal non-alcoholic beer in the second half of 2024. Additionally, AleSmith has already experimented with other non-alcoholic creations, including a hop water infused with Nelson Sauvin hops, which is now available on tap in their Tasting Room.

Non-Alcoholic Speedway 6-packs are starting to hit shelves now throughout California, Arizona, Minnesota, Ohio, and other states where AleSmith is distributed. Consumers can find Non-Alcoholic Speedway at select retailers and locations that carry AleSmith products. Non-Alcoholic Speedway is also available to purchase on the AleSmith online store with shipping available to 42 states.
