Pelican Brewing Company Releases Sunrise Surfer Blonde Ale

May 4, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PACIFIC CITY, Oregon— With summer just around the bend, Pelican Brewing Company has released its latest offering, Sunrise Surfer Blond Ale. Inspired by the Oregon Coast and the surfer-loved town of Pacific City, Sunrise Surfer Blonde Ale pours a brilliant straw-yellow color and features a blissful floral and herbaceous aroma. The light and refreshingly toasty flavors come from Pilsner malt and gives the beer a crisp, lean malt aspect. With a smooth finish, the beer is set to become a summer-must have whether it’s enjoyed on the sand or at home.

“Nothing says crisp and refreshing like a well-made blonde ale,” says Pelican brewmaster Darron Welch. “With Sunrise Surfer, we wanted to create a beer that can be enjoyed anytime you’re in the mood for something bright and refreshing. Flavorful, aromatic and delightfully quaffable, Sunrise Surfer has a modest alcohol content to make sure you are ready for tomorrow’s sunrise!”

This newest beer from Pelican Brewing features a low ABV of 4.8%, perfect for the many consumers seeking out lower alcohol options. Sunrise Surfer Blonde Ale can be found at any of Pelican Brewing’s four coastal taprooms as well as on store shelves wherever Pelican Brewing Company is sold.

Public Coast Brewing Co. Introduces Special Spring Releases

April 11, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

CANNON BEACH, Oregon— Public Coast Brewing Co. has re-released two of its “special release” beers: Uncle Fred’s German Wheat and Stackstock Candy Cap Stout and added the latest collab beer with Big Dog’s Brewing Co.: Violent Violet Blueberry Double Hazy IPA respectively. Only available for a limited time, the three beers each provide a refreshing taste of the bounty of Oregon as we head into the spring and summer months.

“We’re excited to bring back two very special fan favorites and a new collab beer this season,” said Will Leroux, Public Coast’s head brewmaster. “Uncle Fred’s German Wheat beer, brewed in honor of our friend, Fred Bowman, is refreshing and full bodied, with just a dash more clove and banana than your mother’s famous muffins. Violent Violet lives up to its name, packed with fruity tartness which allows the fruit to shine through and pair well with the malts and slight bitterness. And our Stackstock Candy Cap Stout continues to be a crowd pleaser for mushroom foragers, foodies, and craft beer drinkers alike.”

Uncle Fred’s German Wheat beer, a 5.0% ABV, is brewed with at least 50 percent malted wheat and also includes lemon drop hops. This style of beer will be light in color and typically carries notes of banana and clove. Uncle Fred’s is an easy drinker, highly carbonated, bubbly, and refreshing.

Violent Violet Blueberry Double Hazy IPA is as luscious as it sounds, a 8.2% ABV, it’s a stronger take on a regular IPA – amplifying it with a bigger malt and hop profile. This beer contains fresh blueberries paired with extra hops and extra malt, which means it’s pretty EXTRA – extra fruity, extra hoppy, and extra hazy.

Stackstock Candy Cap Stout, a 5.8% ABV, highlights the bounty of the land by infusing a stout beer with Candy Cap mushrooms, the hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest. This beer contains notes of roast chocolate, coffee and dark fruit with the subtle taste of umami from the mushroom. Think maple, caramel and pralines – like a sticky bun.

All three releases are for sale on-tap and in cans at Public Coast’s brewpub in Cannon Beach.

About Public Coast Brewing

Located just 70 miles west of Portland in Cannon Beach, Ore., Public Coast Brewing is named after the only true public coastlines in America: the Oregon Coast. The brewery features a 10bbl Brewhouse with two 30-barrel fermenters, two 20-barrel fermenters, and four 10-barrel fermenters. Public Coast Brewing also offers fresh and delicious fare from local farms and ranches, including their own farm, for adults and children alike. Boasting a large pet-friendly patio, large community-style outdoor fire pit, and an open brewhouse easily viewed from the bar, Public Coast Brewing offers a relaxed and welcoming spot for the whole family.

About Public Coast Farm

Oregon’s historic Route 26, known to Portlanders as the Sunset Highway, has welcomed generations of families traveling to and from the coast on its forested byway. Now Public Coast Farm sits on that very route, straddling West Dairy Creek at the base of the Coastal Range, on a 40-acre site lush with blueberry bushes, beehives, fruit orchards and hops. The farm is fertile ground for the farm’s sister properties – the Stephanie Inn and Public Coast Brewing Co. – each of which incorporate Public Coast Farm’s fresh ingredients into delicious dishes and seasonal beers.

Migration Brewing Announces Maple Barleywine Release

March 8, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon – Migration Brewing will be releasing their Maple Coronet barley wine to the market on Friday, March 3rd. This unique American barley wine is the latest limited release from the company’s burgeoning Migrator barrel aged series. The brewery partnered up with Glenna Farms out of Amery, Wisconsin to secure the organic maple syrup. Aged for six months on Heaven Hill bourbon barrels; the rich, decadent beer will be available in 500ml bottles at local specialty shops around the Portland metro area. The beer will also be available on draft and in bottles at all Migration pubs.

“We were super stoked to work with Glenna Farms on this project. They produce some of the finest organic syrup in Wisconsin and the bourbon barrels are exceptional,” said Mike Branes, Co-Founder and Head Brewer at Migration Brewing. “We’ve been pushing the brewery team to work with a wide variety of ingredients and this beer really came together over a ton of excitement to approach a classic American barleywine differently,” notes Branes.

The Maple Coronet barley wine is brewed to be a complex, and slightly sweet early springtime treat. Coming in at 11% ABV the beer is crafted on a foundation of fine English Maris Otter malt which brings a nutty richness and full roundness to the beer. Three different types of caramel malts exhibit toffee and tones of cherry, plum and raisin. Maple syrup was added during the run-off of the wort, as well as during fermentation, to provide extra sugars. The maple sweetness is not overpowering and integrates into the beer without being cloyingly sweet.

Glenna Farms was established in 1995when Rick and Kristine Glenna purchased an 80-acre maple syrup operation from Arthur V. Olson. The century old sugar bush is located next to a dairy farm, was well known for producing one of nature’s finest sweeteners, pure maple syrup.

Ecliptic and Boneyard Create Mashup IPA for Next Cosmic Collaboration Release

February 21, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon— Portland’s Ecliptic Brewing and Boneyard Beer of Bend, Oregon are collaborating on a mashup IPA to release on February 22. The beer, named STARPM IPA, will ship in 16-ounce cans and draft and will be the second beer in Ecliptic’s 2023 Cosmic Collaboration series.

STARPM IPA is a mashup recipe of Ecliptic’s Starburst IPA and Boneyard’s RPM IPA – both companies’ flagship beers. Both of the original beers are heavily hopped, and the mashup is no exception, featuring Citra, Simcoe, Centennial, Azacca and Amarillo hops for a citrusy and tropical flavor. The beer features a classic malt profile and clocks in at a solid 7.2% ABV.

Says Ecliptic’s Owner and Brewmaster, John Harris, “I used to work with Tony Lawrence [Boneyard’s founder] back at Deschutes- in fact, I hired him! It has been fun being able to work together again to blend our recipes into a new creation and decide on a name, which is also a mashup. I am pleased with how it’s turning out.”

STARPM IPA will be released in 16-ounce cans and draft throughout Ecliptic Brewing’s distribution network on February 22nd. Visit Ecliptic’s website for up-to-date details on this release and potential release events (tentatively planned for early March).

Ecliptic + Boneyard STARPM IPA

Our John Harris and Boneyard’s Founder and Brewmaster Tony Lawrence have a friendship that goes back many years – starting when John brought Tony into the beer universe hiring him as a brewer at Deschutes Brewery. This beer honors John and Tony’s long-lasting student/teacher friendship. For this latest reunion they chose to combine the incredible hop prowess of their beloved Starburst and RPM IPAs. The result? A unified force of citrusy and tropical hop aromas from Citra, Simcoe, Centennial, Azacca and Amarillo Hops–all against a classic malt profile with a dry finish.

Ecliptic Partners with Fort George Brewery for First Cosmic Collaboration of 2023

January 18, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon – Portland’s Ecliptic Brewing and Astoria’s Fort George Brewery are releasing a Cosmic Collaboration beer this January. Ecliptic + Fort George Black Cold IPA will ship January 18th in 16-ounce cans and draft and will be the first beer in the series for 2023.

Ecliptic + Fort George Black Cold IPA is brewed with a variety of malts, including Pale and Munich, but it is the Carafa malt that really helps give the beer is dark coloring and touch of roast. The beer includes Harvest Yeast – a lager yeast – and is fermented warm, as Ecliptic has done with other Cold IPA beers they have made. A heavy dry hop includes Nectaron, Citra, and Idaho 7, creating a citrusy and tropical fruit flavor profile. The beer finishes dry and crisp, as is expected in the Cold IPA style.

“This is the third collaboration we have done with Fort George”, says Ecliptic’s Owner and Brewmaster, John Harris. “I think they make super beer, and I am excited to work with Chris and his team. At our first meeting, Chris proclaimed ‘let’s make a big, Black IPA!’ After mulling around with some ideas, I came up with making it in the ‘cold IPA’ style.” John continues, “As far as we know, this is the first Black Cold IPA ever made. Black IPA was a popular style back around 2012-13. We think it is time to make a tasty beer with black color, a touch of roast, and a big bold citrus and tropical dry hop character.”

Ecliptic + Fort George Black Cold IPA will be released in 16-ounce cans and draft throughout Ecliptic Brewing’s distribution network on January 18th. There is a release event scheduled the same day, starting at the Moon Room at 5pm. Visit Ecliptic’s website or Facebook event page for up-to-date details.

Ecliptic + Fort George Black Cold IPA:

Brewed with our friends from Astoria’s Fort George Brewery, this Black Cold IPA is fermented with lager yeast and generously dry hopped with Idaho 7, Nectaron and Citra, bringing citrus and tropical notes. Finishing dry and crisp with a hint of roast, this beer is perfect for a chilly night of exploration in the final frontier.

Laurelwood Brewing Unveils Fresh New Look and 2023 Calendar

January 13, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon – The team at Laurelwood Brewing Co. has been hard at work and has a lot to be excited about in 2023. For starters, the 22-year-old Portland brewery can’t wait to show off their new look; complete with new color schemes, updated logos and artwork for their packaged beers. Additionally, they are adding three new year-round beers in package and draft to their existing core lineup of Workhorse IPA, Free Range Red Ale, Kids These Daze Hazy IPA, and Brew Deck Dry-Hopped Lager.

Laurelwood Brewing Co., with the help of Portland-based design firm – Prohibition Co. – has been working to update and refresh their brand’s look since early 2022. “We didn’t want to veer too far away from our existing brand identity,” says Laurelwood founder Mike De Kalb. “But we really wanted to create an updated look for our brand that better connects all aspects of our brewery, from packaged beer on the retail shelf to our taproom experience. We’re thrilled with the work Prohibition Co. has done and we look forward to working with them on future projects.”

For the 2023 brand calendar, the brewing team opened the vault and brought back two familiar favorites for year-round availability – Piston Pale Ale and Mother Lode Golden Ale in six-pack 12oz cans and draft. “Piston Pale and Mother Lode Golden are excellent beers and constantly requested brews in our Taproom. We’re excited to bring these beers back and add them to our solid core lineup,” says Laurelwood Head Brewer, Paul Plett. Another familiar long-time draft-only beer, The Wood Lager, will also be released in six-pack 16oz cans for the first time ever. To add to their core beers, Laurelwood Brewing Co. also has an exciting rotating seasonal calendar planned for this year including a brand-new Imperial Series including National Imperial IPA Champion, Megafauna Imperial IPA. All seasonal releases will be sold in the 16oz format as well as draft. Look for these new beers to be launching throughout 2023 and keep an eye out for all new packaging to hit the shelves in Spring.
