Hop Butcher For The World & Frango Set to Release Third Year of “Minted”

October 31, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

CHICAGO, Illinois— Hop Butcher For The World, a Chicagoland-based brewing company known for its hop-forward approach to IPAs and fresh-to-retail distribution strategy is celebrating the third year of its partnership with Garrett Brands, the company behind Garrett Popcorn and Frango Chocolate in brewing “Minted,” an Imperial Stout that smells and tastes like the iconic chocolate mints we all know and love.

The Imperial Stout weighs in at 10.5% alcohol by volume and contains the same mint oil used to make the chocolates. It will be packaged in 16 ounce cans and will be available for sale starting Wednesday, November 1st at 11:00am at Hop Butcher’s brewery, taproom and retail store located at 4257 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. 4-packs of the beer will be distributed to stores via self distribution by the brewery between Wednesday, November 1st and Friday, November 3rd.

“It’s hard to believe this is the third year in a row that we get to do this. It’s become a beer and partnership that all of us at Hop Butcher eagerly anticipate as we gear up for the holiday season and spending more time eating and drinking with friends and family,” says co-founder Jeremiah Zimmer.

“We’re delighted to partner again with Hop Butcher to marry the simple decadence that is Frango with such a delicious, luxurious beer, bringing joy this holiday season,” says Kris Penn, Vice President of Strategic Partnerships with Garrett Brands.

About Hop Butcher For The World

Founded in Chicago in 2014, Hop Butcher For The World brews a broad portfolio of hop- forward IPAs, flavorful lagers and bold stouts. Every week, the brewery self-distributes fresh beer, often only hours or days in the can, from its lineup of over 350 different beers (and growing) to better craft beer retailers throughout Chicagoland and periodically in out-of-state markets such as southern Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, Missouri, California, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Tennessee, Arizona and Oregon.

In late 2022, Hop Butcher opened its first taproom and retail store at 4257 North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago’s Northcenter neighborhood, in the facility previously owned and operated by Half Acre Beer Company. The taproom opens daily to the public at 11:00am, except for Mondays when they are closed.

Wormtown Brewery Launches New Year-Round Hazy IPA, Be Smooth

October 30, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

WORCESTER, Massachusetts— Wormtown Brewery announces the launch of their newest year-round offering, Be Smooth. This hazy New England style IPA will be available across Massachusetts on November 1st, 2023, and will be distributed throughout Wormtown Brewery’s New England footprint beginning January 2024.

True to its name, Be Smooth is a juicy, hazy IPA full of exciting hop aromas while remaining smooth to taste. “We experimented with different brewing techniques to bring you the smoothest New England IPA we could” says Scott Drake, Head Brewer at Wormtown Brewery. “We are known for our traditional west and east coast IPAs and decided we needed a full New England IPA to include in our year-round portfolio. We can appeal to a wider range of hop lovers by bringing more IPA variety to what we offer.”

Wormtown Brewery is known for their flagship beer, Be Hoppy, a West Coast style IPA. Be Smooth was originally introduced as a part of the brewery’s “Be You” Variety Pack, which was released for a limited time in May of 2023. Be Smooth was received well in the market and has been in high demand since. Adding this hazy New England style IPA to the brewery’s year-round portfolio falls in line with the brewery’s mission to celebrate the community through the love of beer. “We want to provide something that appeals to everyone – the silky, smooth, soft, fruity characteristics of Be Smooth will appeal to so many Wormtown drinkers” says Kim Golinski, President of Wormtown Brewery.

Be Smooth will be available along with Be Hoppy at liquor stores, bars and restaurants across Massachusetts starting November 1st, 2023. You can also enjoy this new beer and many other offerings at their taprooms located in Worcester, Ma and Foxborough, Ma.

Rupee Beer Premiers New India Pale Ale Ahead of India’s Largest Holiday

October 30, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

BOSTON, Massachusetts— Putting the ‘I’ back into IPA, Rupee Beer premiers its highly anticipated new India Pale Ale ahead of India’s largest holiday.

There is a common misconception about India Pale Ales better known as an IPAs. Perhaps because ‘India’ is in the name. Surprisingly the IPA wasn’t invented in India, but rather England. With an explosion of IPAs across the craft beer community, why do IPAs mention India, when in reality the bulk of beers consumed in India are more American style pale lagers?

The IPAs of today trace their origin to 19th century British India. Known as the British Raj, the British ruled India for almost 90 years starting in 1858 when the rule of the East India Company was transferred to the Crown of Queen Victoria. During this colonial era in history, English ales were sent to India for the British Indian army and the British citizens living in India to enjoy. During the long six-month voyage by sea, beer would often spoil, thus the the addition of extra hops was added acting as a natural preservative.

With almost every craft brewery these days having a flagship IPA, this style of beer took off with immense popularity across America the last decade. IPAs are hugely flavorful and tend to have higher ABV which may add to their allure. From a juicy New England IPA to bitter west coast IPAs, there is a range of aromas, tasting notes and endless versatility with this style of beer.

As a result of the deep impacts the British Empire had around the world, its time in India surely made crossroads in the world of beer today. As a result of the long voyages to India, the taste of its beers became more hoppy & bitter, much like the popular IPAs of today.

Rupee’s world-renowned master beer brewer from England, cited as one of the most influential players in craft beer having launched over 100+ global beer brands has crafted a British-Indian style IPA with a subtle hop character & smooth finish. Rupee is putting the India back into India Pale Ale with its new IPA Diwali release.

About Rupee Beer

Named Best Beer for World Food and featured in Forbes, Bloomberg, BuzzFeed, The Boston Globe and numerous other global publications, Rupee is on a mission to create easy to drink beers which dismantle the traditional beer drinking experience. Rupee focuses on the way their beers are brewed, and how consumers of the beer feel when pairing beer and global flavors. Rupee’s award winning recipe is brewed with rice, maize, malted barley, and three types of unique hops allowing it to feel super smooth, light and have lower levels of gas and fizz.

Fifth generation entrepreneurs and sons of Indian restaurateurs, Van & Sumit Sharma found themselves continually frustrated they could never find Indian beer in Maine – the least diverse state in America where their family immigrated to from the U.K. in the early 90’s. They decided to not only create their own beer, but set out to game change the food & beverage industry in a bold and diverse way.

“Being Indian, born in London and having grown up in the states, we knew in our journey as a beer brand that the time was going to come to give the public what they had been asking for being an Indian beer company. For almost two two years, the number one question we get at craft beer festivals across America has been “where is your IPA?” Ahead of the largest holiday in India, Diwali, we are very excited to premier Rupee’s highly anticipated India Pale Ale brewed to the original style of an English ale”.

Rupee Beer became the first Indian inspired brand to be sold at select national retailers such as Costco, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Total Wine, as well as top international restaurants, liquor stores. It also was recently sold at Fenway Park as the first Indian brand sold at Major League Professional Sports.

Straight from Pelican’s home on the scenic Oregon coast, this new beer is a delightful expedition into mystic, hazy refreshment with layers of flavor and only 5.7% ABV – just in time for Fall enjoyment.

Dark Sky Brewing Installs Dottie, a Drive-In Theater Truck

October 26, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona— Dark Sky Brewing debuted their new drive-in theater in a remodeled 1959 box truck, affectionately named Dottie.

Dottie’s story begins with a ‘For Sale’ sign in a field full of sunflowers. The team at Dark Sky knew they had to have this original 1959 C-600 box truck, and spent the past few weeks installing a 15-foot screen and six taps to transform her into a theater parked in their beer garden.

The truck now sports a hot pink glitter vinyl bench seat, which evoked visions of Dorothy’s glittery heels in the Wizard of Oz and eventually led to her name, Dottie. She’s wrapped with a design that nods to a 1950’s diner.

Dark Sky Brewing guests will be able to enjoy movies while enjoying fresh beers flowing from Dottie’s taps. They can also book Dottie for special events, and find her pouring around town.

About Dark Sky Brewing

Established in 2014 by Larami and Ryan Sandlin, Dark Sky Brewing has become a downtown Flagstaff institution that builds community through craft beer, food, and philanthropy. Named in honor of its home, in the world’s first International Dark Sky Place, Dark Sky Brewing is crafting a beer selection that is as unique and beautiful as every star, meteor, and comet they can see from their backyard. The microbrewery size allows the freedom to brew everything from traditional recipes to experimentally fun brews with exotic ingredients. Committed to making that home a better place by giving back, the Dark Sky Community nonprofit organization was founded out of the brewery to serve as a launching base for other nonprofits to raise more funds and awareness.

Bent Water Brewing Company Releases Primordial Haze, a Tropical IPA With Phantasm Powder

October 25, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

LYNN, Massachusetts— Bent Water Brewing Company, the award-winning craft brewery from Lynn, Massachusetts, announced the release of Primordial Haze, a hazy tropical IPA brewed with Phantasm Powder and featuring a trio of the brewery’s iconic gorillas on the label.

Primordial Haze was first released in a limited capacity last fall. Based on consumer response, the brewery decided to increase the barrelage in 2023. According to Aaron Reames, co-founder and president of Bent Water Brewing, Primordial Haze is a great example of the brewery’s ongoing commitment to innovation and execution of the highest quality beers.

“Phantasm Powder is still relatively new to many breweries; we were actually one of the first to use it on the East Coast when we brewed Primordial last year,” said Reames. “Phantasm Powder is an extraction made from Marlborough New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc grape skins. When added correctly to the fermentation process, it can really help unlock strong tropical fruit aromas. I’ve been making and enjoying beers for decades – Primordial Haze might have the biggest nose of any beer I’ve ever tasted!”

In addition to the liquid, Reames and his team agree that the label, created by co-founder and creative director Michael Shaugnessy, is among the brewery’s most dynamic.

“If you know anything about Bent Water Brewing, you’ve probably noticed we have a thing for gorillas,” joked Shaugnessy, whose extensive experience includes a prior role as art director at Hill Holiday. “But the gorillas on our labels actually tell a pretty good story and are completely intentional. Our first Double IPA, Double Thunder Funk, made me think of two gorillas colliding head-on, which became the inspiration for that label. With the use of Phantasm Powder and a slew of hops in Primordial Haze, I thought about a mad scientist’s experiment that wound up producing a third gorilla – and that’s how it showed up on the label.”

The brewery’s gorilla-craze extends beyond the visual branding on beer cans. For the past year, two costumed gorillas – affectionately referred to by the team as Thunder and Funk – have been spotted everywhere from the brewery taproom to ski slopes in New Hampshire and, most recently, to the crowded, Halloween-festive streets and taverns of Salem, Massachusetts.

Primordial Haze will be available exclusively in the Bent Water taproom on draught and to go starting on Friday, October 20th. It will be rolled out into select distribution regions by the end of the month.
