Old Town Brewing Keeping Portland Old School

December 3, 2019 by Austin Foster

If you are looking for nostalgic Portland feels, look no further than Old Town Brewing. This brewery encapsulates old Portland, with fresh, tasty brews, and food. Located in the heart of old town Portland, Old Town Brewing was first known as Old Town Pizza, which started in 1974. Adam Milne, long time customer of the restaurant bought the pizza joint, where he celebrated his 9th and 30th birthday, in 2008.

In 2012 Adam hired a brewer and started making classic beers to accompany his delicious pies. “I knew that we wouldn’t be successful just making okay beer in Portland, it has to be great beer. I wanted to make sure we did everything possible to make high quality craft beer,” says Adam. He then went on to hire Andrew Lamont from Sam Adams in 2014.

When you walk in to their Northeast location check out their mantel over the fireplace, which is adorn with numerous medals from prestigious beer competitions around the nation. Their pilsner took home gold at the 2018 World Beer Cup. The Shanghai’d IPA won two medals at GABF, as well as, gold at the 2018 World Beer Cup just to name a few. The Shanghai’d IPA is named after Portland’s famous Shanghai Tunnels, which if you are visiting Portland, you should also take a tour of the awesome old Portland Underground.

If you’re looking for some fun entertainment watch their newest YouTube series starring their latest creation, Haze of Our Lives. These videos represent the fun attitudes of the team behind Old Town Brewing, as well as, help tell the history of the beers.

If you’re in town for just a short time and looking to experience old town Portland, make sure to drop in to one of their two locations, eat some great pizza, and drink up that nostalgic taste of Portland in a pint of Pillowfist Hazy IPA.

Great Notion Brewery, Setting Trends and Making It Look Easy

December 2, 2019 by Austin Foster

Kettle sours, fruited beers, and adjunct stouts are a few of the reasons why Great Notion Brewing is leading the way in innovation. Producing cutting edge culinary inspired sours and stouts has put this craft brewery as one of the top trendsetters in the industry.

Every Saturday morning you can line up, along with a couple hundred other beer enthusiasts, to get your hands on the newest special brew can release from the brewery. The brewery usually releases anywhere from 2-4 beers in cans weekly, and once they are gone, you don’t know when you’ll see them again.

As the first brewery in the Northwest who dove head first into mastering the hazy IPA’s, these guys really know their stuff when it comes to unique brews, with amazing flavor. As if the demand for these beers wasn’t high enough, Great Notion doesn’t distribute their beer. “95% of our beer is distributed through our brewpubs,” says co-founder Paul Reiter, who is the businessman on the team.

With two thriving locations, the brewery invested this year in a third location in Beaverton, which is set to open in spring of 2020. This next location is going to be much smaller, and focused on providing tasty brews for the beer geeks out in the burbs.

Great Notion Brewing is staying relevant by listening to their customers, constantly experimenting with ingredients, and stepping outside of the box with beers like Boo Berry Muffin and Keep It Tasty.

If you haven’t stopped by one of their breweries yet, make sure you do. The fun atmosphere, great food, and delicious beers are waiting to impress. Don’t forget to try one of their flagship beers, the Double Stack, Ripe, JB, and Juice Jr.

Migration Brewing Co. Building Community One Beer At A Time

January 18, 2019 by Austin Foster

A lot of businesses speak about uplifting their local community but don’t follow through on the meaning of community and all that it encompasses. While speaking with co-owner McKean Banzer-Lausberg I truly felt the community togetherness he and the other owners of Migration Brewing Co. created.

The name Migration came from the rapid wave of people moving to Portland in search of something new. McKean along with his brother Eric and business partners, Colin Rath and Mike Branes wanted to create a community brewery for the Portland natives and the new wave of people moving to the area. They wanted to create a business committed to the area around NE Glisan Street, the home of their first brewery. “Our goal has always been to create a community oriented location. We believe in donating to local nonprofits and business. By lifting up the people around us we feel a togetherness that is genuine to our mission. We aren’t just a flash in the pan business. We are here for the long-term play; to build a following of friends and neighbors all around something we love, beer”, says McKean.

While looking for a second location, McKean noticed that the beer industry was underserved in Gresham. The owners applied for an economic grant for the city and were selected. In six short months, after the lease was signed for Migration’s second location, it opened its doors to the public. With 20,000 square feet, a 20 barrel brew house and a goal of 5-6,000 barrel production for 2019, the brewery is settling in to it’s new home nicely.

If you’re eager for exciting things to come in 2019, don’t worry there is no shortage. The brewery has plans for a Brut IPA that won’t disappoint, as well as, a 16 oz. hazy can program. The next release will be the Rock Steady Hazy IPA coming out in February in four packs. If that doesn’t seem like enough excitement for you, there is a special release collaboration, the Wild Coast Goose IPA, with Drifter Brewing out of South Africa scheduled to hit pint glasses in early 2019.

Austin Foster – BeerInfo’s Portland Craft Beer Writer

July 7, 2018 by Austin Foster

BeerInfo’s Portland Craft Beer Writer – Austin Foster
A few words that describe Austin: adventurer, communicator, enthusiastic, laughter, organization fanatic, beer lover and passionate writer.

As a Portland native Austin grew up in a culture submersed in beer.  Breweries were and are sprouting up on every corner. She has vivid memories of her Dad letting her try sips of his favorite beer, Full Sail Amber, at the dinner table when she was younger.

Going to college at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Austin along with her friends found themselves frequently at Ninkasi Brewing Company. Total Domination IPA quickly became her favorite beer her entire senior year. This is the year her passion for beer and the brewing process started fermenting.

Austin is fascinated with the ever-evolving world of marketing in the brewing industry. She’s worked in one of the largest craft brewing companies in the nation, Craft Brew Alliance, as well as smaller craft breweries like Laurelwood Brewing Company and McMenamins Brewery. Through it all she’s learned one thing – in this industry you have to use your past experience to think on your feet and match the constant evolution of the brewing industry.

Brewery of the Day: Base Camp Brewing in Portland, Oregon

April 13, 2018 by Austin Foster

Brewery of the Day: Base Camp Brewing by Austin Foster, BeerInfo writer and works at Base Camp Brewing in Portland, Oregon

From the moment I met two of the six co-founders of Base Camp Brewing Company, I knew it was different than most breweries. Krister, Key Accounts Manager and Ross, Marketing Manager, live and breathe the Base Camp lifestyle; carefree, outdoor focused, nature fanatics.

When you walk into Base Camp,  you are greeted by one of our taproom employees who are genuinely nice. It’s not just an act. They actually care how you’re doing. You can find regulars at the bar chatting it up and sharing camping photos with one of the beertenders.

Walking by the cooler in the entrance area, you are greeted with images of every employee who works for Base Camp and a short blurb about their life.

The people of Base Camp (BCBC) are authentic, genuine and some of the best people I’ve ever met. I feel so lucky to work where I do. I am happy and excited to come to work. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to be part of a brand culture that is a lifestyle the employees and founders live every day.
Weekly excursions have all of us either, at the beach, on a mountain, at a bouldering gym, riding bicycles, hiking, camping, visiting waterfalls or having a picnic in a park.

Not only do the employees of BCBC live the brand and are the brand, but we give back to fellow outdoor enthusiasts too. Base Camp is proud to have partnered with groups such as The Bicycle Transportation Alliance, The Nature Conservancy, She Jumps, Outdoor Project, Timberline Lodge, US Outdoor Store, Circuit Bouldering Gym, Portland Rock Gym, Oregon Humane Society, and many more great businesses and nonprofits that represent what we believe in. Enriching our community through great beer and the outdoors.

If you’re having a hard time wrapping your brain around the idea that a brewery could be as true to their brand culture as Base Camp, then come on in, kick off your hiking boots and grab a pint with anyone of us sometime. After all, we’re always happiest drinking beer.

Craft Brewery of the Day: Gigantic Brewing Company; Doing Things Differently

April 11, 2018 by Austin Foster

Walking into Gigantic Brewing Company you can tell it’s a different kind of brewery than most. The beers are flowing, the regulars are chatting with the bartender who happens to be one of the owner’s wives, the colors are bright and in your face, and the artwork is out of this world.

Ben and Van started Gigantic Brewing Co. in 2012 after not knowing how they met, but knowing they wanted to start a brewery together. “I don’t remember meeting each other,” Said Van, “Ben just said we should start a brewery.” Two years after Ben said that to Van, they opened the doors to one of the most unique breweries in Portland.

This year, to keep up with their own trend of doing things differently, they released a seasonal line called the “Greatest Hits.” They don’t usually repeat seasonals but in honor of their fifth anniversary, they decided to bring back some of the favorites from the line up over the last five years.

One of the things that makes this place instantly feel different is the feeling you get when you walk in. Their regulars are there all night and chatting it up. You can tell there is a deep sense of community in everything that Gigantic does. Van said, “It’s rare when you can get them to have more than one of something other than an IPA.” The regulars are all about those hoppy brews that Van spends a good amount of time making along side their Head Brewer of four years, Scott Guckel.

If you live in Portland and you’re looking for a place to call home outside of home, swing by Gigantic Brewing and make yourself comfortable. Make sure to check out their artwork on the walls and their magazine, which takes the form of a comic book. This brewery will have you never wanting to leave.
