About Rohrbach Brewing Co.

Rohrbach Brewing Company, Rochester’s original craft brewery, was founded in 1991 by John Urlaub and Patty Yahn-Urlaub. Inspired by the German town of Rohrbach (from which the brewery takes its name), the couple started brewing in the basement of the historic German House in Rochester’s South Wedge neighborhood. As Western New York’s first modern craft brewery, Rohrbach quickly became a pioneer in the region’s craft beer scene, introducing locals to high-quality, handcrafted beers at a time when the industry was still emerging. By 1994, under the guidance of pioneering head brewer Dave Schlosser, the brewery released its beloved Scotch Ale, which remains a regional favorite to this day. In 1995, they opened the Buffalo Road brewpub in Ogden, which became a beloved community gathering spot for generations of Rochesterians.

Over the following decades, Rohrbach expanded with a production brewery and beer hall at 97 Railroad Street in Rochester’s Public Market district (opened around 2008–2009), solidifying its reputation for quality, community focus, and support of local agriculture. The brewery has remained deeply rooted in Upstate New York, distributing primarily in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and surrounding areas while staying true to its independent spirit. In early 2026, after 35 years, the founding couple passed ownership to Brockport brothers Joel and Nathan Will, ensuring the next chapter for Rochester’s craft beer cornerstone while continuing its legacy of innovation and local pride.
