COLORADO— The season of German-style lagers is upon us, and Lone Tree Brewing is excited to share theirs with Colorado. The 2025 batch is canned and available at retailers across the state.

Crafted with traditional European malts and German Hallertau Mittelfruh hops to emulate this classic beer style, the amber-hued Lone Tree Oktoberfest is a 5.5% ABV lager with rich, toasty and bready flavors, minimal bitterness, and a dry finish.

Find Lone Tree Oktoberfest on tap and in canned 12oz. 6-packs at both of the brewery tasting rooms in Lone Tree and Parker, and at select locations in Colorado.

On September 6, Lone Tree Brewing Parker will host Bustoberfest: Oktoberfest Celebration – Bus Loop Edition. Health Benefits of Beer: A Balanced Look

August 22, 2025 by Dow Scoggins

Health Benefits of Beer: A Balanced Look
Beer, a globally cherished beverage, is celebrated for its flavor and role in social gatherings. When enjoyed responsibly, it may also offer health benefits. Below, we dive into some potential advantages of moderate beer consumption, supported by research, while emphasizing responsible drinking.

Nutrient Content
Beer contains antioxidants from barley and hops, similar to wine, along with B vitamins, protein, iron, calcium, and trace amounts of fiber. These nutrients vary by beer type, making it a surprisingly nutrient-rich option when consumed in moderation. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry

Heart Health Support
Moderate beer consumption may reduce the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes by 30–35% compared to non-drinkers. Responsible alcohol intake can support cardiovascular health, but excess consumption negates these benefits. New England Journal of Medicine

Kidney Health
Certain beers, particularly hop-heavy varieties like pale ales, contain phytochemicals that may lower the risk of kidney stones by up to 41%. Moderation is essential to avoid adverse effects. Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology

Cholesterol Management
The soluble fiber in beer can help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, promoting healthier blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Excessive drinking, however, may impair nutrient absorption, so balance is key. American Heart Association: Circulation

Bone Strength
Beer’s silicon content, in the form of orthosilicic acid, may support bone and connective tissue health, potentially reducing the risk of osteoporosis. National Institutes of Health

Stress Reduction
Enjoying one or two beers can help ease stress and promote relaxation. However, using alcohol as a primary stress-relief method is not recommended, as it may lead to negative health outcomes over time. American Journal of Psychiatry

Cognitive Benefits
Preliminary studies suggest xanthohumol, a compound in hops, may protect brain cells from oxidative stress, potentially supporting memory. Effective doses, however, often exceed typical beer consumption, and more research is needed. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry

Brain Function
Moderate alcohol consumption, including beer, is associated with improved cognitive performance in middle-aged adults. Overconsumption does not enhance these effects and may be harmful. American Journal of Epidemiology

Nutrient-Dense Ingredients
Beer is crafted from whole grains, fruits, and spices, providing small amounts of fiber, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Nutrient profiles vary by beer style, contributing to its potential benefits.

Stroke Prevention
Moderate beer consumption may improve blood flow and reduce the risk of ischemic strokes (the most common type) by 25–40% due to its blood-thinning properties. American Heart Association

Important Note: Moderate drinking is defined as up to one drink per day for women and two for men. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized guidance. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health risks, including addiction and liver damage.

Capital Brewery & Bier Garten Toasts to 40 Years

August 22, 2025 by Dow Scoggins

Capital Brewery & Bier Garten Toasts to 40 Years Pull up a stool in “Middleton’s Backyard” and raise a pint to Capital Brewery & Bier Garten as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. Since its founding in 1984 in downtown Middleton, Wisconsin, this trailblazing craft brewery has united beer lovers with its award-winning German-style lagers and vibrant community spirit.

Back in the ‘80s, when craft breweries were scarce, founders Ed Janus and Tony Frey started with a dream and no assets. Through word-of-mouth crowdfunding—before the internet made it trendy—they raised $500,000 by selling $10 shares to 300 investors, now grown to 1,600. They transformed a historic egg factory, imported German brewing kettles, and launched a legacy.
Grand National Champion at the 2013 U.S. Open Beer Championship
As the Midwest’s oldest continuously operating micro craft brewery, Capital has racked up over 240 awards, including a crowning achievement: Grand National Champion at the 2013 U.S. Open Beer Championship. Led by President Scott Wiener, General Manager Kevin Bagstad, and Brewmaster Tanner Brethorst, the brewery balances tradition with innovation. Brethorst, who joined in 2021, experiments with new brews on their seven-barrel system, noting, “Seeing smiles when people taste my beer—that’s the real reward.”

The expanded Bier Garten, open from spring to snowfall, hosts live music, welcomes carry-ins, and fosters community with events like weddings and fundraisers. The Capital Brewery Bike Club, started in 2009, rides three times weekly, while the indoor Bier Stube, with its century-old Chicago speakeasy bar, keeps the vibe cozy year-round.

Capital’s lineup, including Pilsner, Munich Dark, flagship Wisconsin Amber, and the six-time platinum-winning Blonde Doppelbock (tapped at Bockfest, Feb. 21, 2025), continues to shine. Their small size allows flexibility to can new brews or revive classics, keeping fans happy. Wiener reflects, “We’re woven into Middleton’s fabric, and hitting 40 years with a Grand National Champion title is incredible.”

Cheers to Capital Brewery for 40 years of craft, community, and championship brews!

What Makes Belgian Beers Special
Belgian beers stand out for their rich diversity, complex flavors, and centuries-old brewing traditions that blend artistry with innovation. For a beer geek, the magic lies in several key elements. First, Belgian yeast strains are the heart of these beers, imparting unique fruity, spicy, and phenolic notes—think banana, clove, or pepper— that define styles like Saison, Dubbel, Tripel, and Witbier. These yeasts often ferment at higher temperatures, creating bold, expressive profiles that evolve in the glass. Second, Belgian brewers embrace a wide range of ingredients beyond the standard malt, hops, and water. Spices (coriander, orange peel), candi sugar, and even wild yeasts or bacteria for lambics and sours add layers of complexity. This willingness to experiment results in beers that range from crisp and refreshing to funky, tart, or deeply malty.

Another factor is the historical and cultural depth of Belgian brewing, often tied to Trappist monasteries and farmhouse traditions. Beers like Orval or Westmalle are crafted with recipes refined over generations, offering a sense of heritage that resonates with enthusiasts. Bottle conditioning, where beers undergo secondary fermentation in the bottle, adds natural carbonation and allows flavors to develop over time, making many Belgian beers age-worthy. Styles like Lambic, spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts, or Gueuze, a blend of young and old lambics, are particularly revered for their funky, tart uniqueness. For geeks, the unpredictability, craftsmanship, and sheer variety— from light Witbiers to robust Quadrupels— make Belgian beers a playground of flavor and tradition, unlike any other beer culture in the world.

Jim Koch Returns as CEO of Boston Beer Company: A Founder’s Comeback Amid Brewing Success

August 13, 2025 by Dow Scoggins

Jim Koch returns as CEO of the Boston Beer Company

In a move that blends nostalgia with strategic necessity, Jim Koch, the visionary founder and chairman of the Boston Beer Company, is set to reclaim the role of CEO effective August 15, 2025. Koch, who first led the company from its inception in 1984 until 2001, will step in following the departure of current CEO Michael Spillane, who is stepping down for personal reasons but will remain on the board of directors.

The announcement, made on August 1, 2025, comes at a pivotal time for the Boston-based brewer, best known for its flagship Samuel Adams brand. The company recently reported one of its most profitable quarters in years, highlighting resilience in a competitive craft beer market increasingly challenged by shifting consumer preferences toward non-alcoholic beverages and ready-to-drink cocktails. Koch’s return is positioned as an interim measure, with the 76-year-old entrepreneur indicating he plans to hold the position until an internal successor is prepared to take over. “I don’t anticipate doing this in five years,” Koch told The Wall Street Journal, underscoring his commitment to a smooth transition rather than a long-term tenure.

A Brewer’s Legacy Revisited
Jim Koch’s story is synonymous with the rise of American craft beer. Armed with a family recipe dating back to the 19th century and a Harvard Business School education, Koch launched Boston Beer Company in 1984 with Samuel Adams Boston Lager as its cornerstone product. What began as a small operation in Koch’s kitchen quickly grew into a powerhouse, challenging the dominance of mass-market beers and sparking the craft beer revolution. Under his initial leadership, the company went public in 1995 and expanded its portfolio to include brands like Angry Orchard cider, Truly hard seltzer, and Twisted Tea.

Koch stepped away from the CEO role in 2001 to focus on brewing and innovation, but he has remained deeply involved as chairman and the company’s public face. His return now echoes similar comebacks in the business world, where founders like Howard Schultz at Starbucks or Michael Dell at Dell Technologies have rejoined to steer their creations through turbulent times. For Boston Beer, recent challenges include navigating a slowdown in craft beer sales and adapting to the explosive growth—and subsequent cooling—of the hard seltzer category.

Strategic Implications and Market Reaction
Analysts view Koch’s reinstatement positively, citing his intimate knowledge of the brand and proven track record. The company’s stock saw a modest uptick following the news, reflecting investor confidence in Koch’s ability to maintain momentum from the recent strong quarter. Spillane, who joined Boston Beer nearly a decade ago and became CEO in 2022, has been credited with streamlining operations and driving profitability, including through diversification beyond traditional beer.

Looking ahead, Koch has hinted at grooming internal talent for the top job, potentially from within the company’s executive ranks. This approach aligns with Boston Beer’s culture of innovation and loyalty, as evidenced by its employee-owned structure and commitment to quality brewing. Industry observers speculate that Koch’s leadership could accelerate expansions in non-alcoholic offerings or further integrations of its diverse portfolio, including recent ventures into cannabis-infused beverages through partnerships.

Stirring Memories in the Craft Beer Community
The news has resonated widely in the craft beer scene, evoking memories of Koch’s pioneering days. Social media buzz highlights his role in elevating American beer on the global stage, with many praising the move as a “victory lap” for a industry icon. As one LinkedIn post noted, Koch’s return “stirs up a lot of memories” among former colleagues and fans alike.

For Boston Beer Company, this leadership shift represents not just a change at the top but a reaffirmation of its roots. As Koch once famously said while promoting Samuel Adams, “We take the beer seriously, but not ourselves.” With him back at the helm, the company aims to blend that ethos with forward-thinking strategies to keep pouring success in an ever-evolving market.

American Craft Beer Hall of Fame Launches “Landmark Craft Beers” Program to Celebrate Iconic Brews That Shaped U.S. Beer History

August 12, 2025 by Dow Scoggins

Craft Beer Hall of Fame - First great craft beers
CHICAGO, Illinois
— The American Craft Beer Hall of Fame, the nation’s foremost institution dedicated to celebrating the legacy and impact of craft brewing in the United States, is proud to announce the launch of its newest initiative: Landmark Craft Beers.

This program, created to honor individual beers that have left a lasting mark on American brewing and drinking culture, will recognize those singular brews that have helped define, advance, or transform the craft beer movement in the U.S. “In the story of American craft beer, certain individual beers stand out not just as commercial successes, but as cultural and historical milestones,” explained Marty Nachel, Founder and President of the American Craft Beer Hall of Fame. “Landmark Craft Beers is our way of shining a spotlight on those truly pivotal creations—beers that helped start revolutions, inspired brewers, and changed how Americans think about what beer can be.”

The inaugural class of Landmark Craft Beers includes five foundational brews, as voted on by the Hall’s distinguished group of electors and advisors:

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale – The beer that brought Cascade hops to national prominence and helped define the American Pale Ale style.

Samuel Adams Boston Lager – An icon that helped to bring full-flavored beer to mainstream audiences in the 1980s and put American craft beer on the global map.

Anchor Steam Beer – The resurrection of a truly American beer style, and one that helped define the image and concept of craft beer for decades to come.

Celis White (Witbier) – A revival of a nearly extinct Belgian style that brought traditional wheat beer to American craft drinkers.

Anchor Liberty Ale – An early pioneer in the creation of the modern concept of American IPA, and an early standard bearer for what would become the country’s most important style of beer.

Each beer in the Landmark Craft Beers program will be featured on the Hall of Fame’s website along with historical context and reflections on their cultural impact. Additional inductees will be announced annually, with nominations open to the public and evaluated by a panel of beer historians, brewers, writers, and industry veterans.

“This program isn’t about nostalgia. It is about looking to the past for inspiration for the future,” said Aaron MJ Gore, the Hall’s Vice-President. “By reflecting on the beers that helped to move the needle forward for an entire industry, today’s brewers can find the catalyst for the Landmark Beers of today.”

To learn more about the Landmark Craft Beers program, the American Craft Beer Hall of Fame, or to donate in support of its mission to recognize and celebrate those who helped to build the American craft beer industry, visit the Hall online.
