Belching Beaver Brewery Adds Terpene-Focused Tropical Terps IPA To Core Lineup

April 6, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

OCEANSIDE, California— Oceanside’s Belching Beaver has added a core beer to its lineup called Tropical Terps IPA, a re-release of the brewery’s Dam Good Decade Terps IPA from its 10th anniversary celebration in October 2022. It is the company’s first core beer that uses terpenes, which are aromatic compounds naturally found in citrus fruits, pine trees, hops, and cannabis.

Tropical Terps IPA has a 6.6% alcohol-by-volume (ABV) and includes Simcoe, Mosaic, Strata, and Citra hops. Terpenes bring to the juicy IPA new flavors and aromas that are unattainable from hops alone, featuring tropical notes of melons, mango, guava, and pineapple. The terpenes used for the beer were not derived from cannabis.

“We received so many compliments last year from the initial batch of Brewmaster Troy Smith’s new brand that we decided to make it a part of our core,” said Co-Founder and CEO Tom Vogel. “Troy and his team are always pushing the boundaries of beer and they love creating new and amazing styles like with Tropical Terps. He not only designed the beer, but the label as well. This really is a game changer. I am sure we will see more terpene-focused beers throughout the country in the years ahead.”

Tropical Terps IPA is available on draft and in six packs of 12-ounce cans at Belching Beaver’s four San Diego County locations: Oceanside Brewhouse, Vista’s Pub980 and Tavern & Grill, and North Park Tasting Room.

“We are not the first brewery to do this, though not many have tried,” Smith said. “Since beer has been around for thousands of years, we are always trying to push the limits of what defines a good beer. Showcasing something new and innovative is the goal, and I believe both hard-core and casual beer drinkers will enjoy our latest creation that has flavors they may have never tasted before.”

Belching Beaver beers are distributed to 12 states outside of California, including as far away as Wisconsin and Texas. Head of Production and Quality Manager Thomas Peters, who joined the brewery in 2013, oversees all beer production at the company’s Oceanside manufacturing facility and four brewery/retail locations.

Alaskan Brewing Announces Alaskan Distilling Company Expansion with RTD Canned Cocktails

April 3, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

JUNEAU, Alaska— Alaskan Distilling Company is the latest innovation from Alaskan Brewing Company. For nearly forty years Alaskan Brewing Company has been devoted to the art of creating the finest craft beer and is now introducing a selection of craft cocktails to their lineup starting this April.

The Juneau-based brewery started its distilling journey in 2019 with a small batch process focusing on long-standing distilling traditions. “We have always tried to put a little bit of Alaska in the bottle and a little bit of Alaska on the bottle. One thing that we all revel in is the quality of life that this place presents and represents. So for us, we want to make beverages that reflect that sort of feeling and character,” said Alaskan Brewing Company Co-founder Geoff Larson. Alaskan Distilling Company is introducing the Alaska market to their Solstice Vodka Lemonade, Musk Ox Vodka Mule, and Rainforest Gin & Tonic.

Alaskan Distilling Company is running a combination still that can operate both as a pot still and 12 plate column still. This distilling setup will allow the distillery to produce a full range of spirits like whiskey, vodka, and gin in the future.

Seven times distilled, and carbon-filtered Alaskan Distilling Ultra-Pure Pristine Vodka is used in the Solstice Vodka Lemonade, which produces an exceptional neutral flavor. The Solstice Vodka Lemonade is Alaskan Distilling’s most complex mix of ingredients, highlighting wildflower honey and fruit-enhanced lemonade resulting in a flavorful and balanced cocktail.

To achieve an approachable yet distinct lingering ginger heat in the Musk Ox Vodka Mule, Alaskan Distilling produced and blended two different vodkas: Ultra-Pure Pristine Vodka and an Intense Fresh Ginger Vodka.

Finally, the Rainforest Gin & Tonic showcases a gin specifically designed for Alaskan Distilling’s canned cocktail, as well as a house-made spruce tip tonic water. The spruce tip tonic water helps create an exceptionally dry and crisp cocktail since it is made with half the amount of sugar of most commercial tonic waters.

The trio of Alaskan Distilling Company products has on average one-third to half of the amount of sugar typical canned cocktails have without sacrificing depth of flavor. For example, in the Solstice Lemonade, “Sweetness comes from the fact that you might catch a little bit of honey character. Well, the honey does have a sweetness, but it also has an aromatic quality which elicits an expectation of sweetness,” said Larson.

To achieve high flavor with lower sugars, Alaskan Distilling Company relied on complex ingredients like Gustavus spruce tips, rose hips, cardamom, orange peel, and fruit juices like cranberry, raspberry, grapefruit, black and tart cherry, and more.

“The overall impact on the flavor is multi-dimensional. When you sit down and enjoy one of our canned cocktails, your attitude and where you are affects what you perceive in the beverage. This is because of the many different layers of flavor that we’ve incorporated,” said Larson.

Solstice Vodka Lemonade, Musk Ox Vodka Mule, and Rainforest Gin & Tonic are gluten-free and have an eight percent ABV. The canned cocktails will only be available in Alaska starting this April. To find Alaskan Distilling Company canned cocktails near you visit our Beer Finder.

In addition to producing world-class beverages, Alaskan Brewing Company strives for innovation through progressive programs like employee ownership and a commitment to environmental stewardship.

Cheerwine and NoDa Brewing Company Introduce Cheerwine Ale

February 13, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

SALISBURY, North Carolina – Two of North Carolina’s most popular family-owned beverage companies are giving Carolinians something to ‘cheer’ about when Cheerwine Ale hits retailers’ shelves today.

Cheerwine, the iconic 106-year-old cherry soda from Salisbury, N.C., and popular Charlotte-based brewery NoDa Brewing Company’s Cheerwine Ale (5.2% ABV | 18 IBUs), is a crisp, refreshing wheat ale infused with the South’s favorite cherry soda.

“Cheerwine makes the perfect ingredient in food and beverages because its unique cherry flavor complements so many different tastes,” says Joy Ritchie Harper, vice-president of marketing for Cheerwine and fifth-generation founding family member. “For years, people have incorporated Cheerwine into barbecue sauces, cocktails, desserts and more, and now we’re adding beer to that list.”

Cheerwine Ale, which is great for craft beer novices and experts alike, is a smooth-drinking, well-balanced brew with a perfect amount of Cheerwine that doesn’t overpower the beer’s flavor. Cheerwine Ale will be part of NoDa Brewing Company’s year-round lineup.

“Cheerwine and NoDa are synonymous with North Carolina, and both our fan bases have fond memories of enjoying our beverages during their most cheerful times – from summer vacations to the holidays and all points in between,” says Jacob Virgil, director of strategic development for NoDa Brewing Company. “Similarly, Cheerwine Ale can be enjoyed year round – it’s an approachable craft beer perfect for all occasions. We’re excited to bring fans the perfect marriage of these two North Carolina staples.”

“Like Cheerwine, NoDa is an iconic Carolina original. As one of Charlotte’s first craft breweries, it’s a classic brand led by passionate people and the perfect partner to produce a Cheerwine-infused beer,” says Harper.

Cheerwine Ale, which comes in 16 oz. four-pack cans, is now available at select North Carolina retailers. It’s also available on draft at a number of Charlotte and Triangle restaurants and bars, as well as the brewery’s Charlotte and Chapel Hill taprooms.

Over the coming weeks, Cheerwine Ale will roll out in additional North Carolina retailers and throughout South Carolina.

Deschutes Brewery and Bendistillery Release Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Black Butte Whiskey

November 24, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Deschutes BreweryBEND, OREGON – Deschutes Brewery and Bendistillery’s Crater Lake Spirits today announced the exclusive release of a single barrel cask strength Black Butte Whiskey. A limited special edition true American malt whiskey distilled from the wash of Deschutes Brewery’s famed Black Butte Porter and aged in new char #4 American White Oak barrels. The resulting spirit is a 125.8-proof balanced, yet profoundly complex whiskey featuring strong notes of sweet dark caramel, warm bread, and intense vanilla.  The rich ambered honey appearance is validated by surprisingly sweet and candied almond notes on the palate that evolves into a rich texture with new oak notes and molasses finish. Subtle cocoa and warming spices arise from the porter.

This cask strength debut will be accompanied by the annual release of the original 5-year-old, 94-proof Black Butte Whiskey.

Since its original release, Black Butte Whiskey has gained outstanding national acclaim, most recently Best of Show at Sunset Magazine’s International Spirits Competition with 98 points, and was named Best American Craft Luxury Whiskey by Sunset.

The idea for this unique collaboration between craft brewery and distillery was born over a pint at the original Deschutes Brewery Public House over a decade ago in downtown, Bend, Oregon. Brewed with an artisanal selection of specialty malts and then double-distilled and aged for 5 years in new char #4 American White Oak barrels, the original Black Butte Whiskey is a 94-proof whiskey that retains the malty, chocolatey notes of Black Butte Porter and finishes with a soft, nearly sweet, character.

Bottles of the rare cask strength single barrel whiskey will be available for sale to the public starting Friday, November 25th for “Black Butte Friday” at Crater Lake Spirits Downtown Tasting Room located at 1024 NW Bond Street. A release party will coincide next door at Deschutes Brewery’s pub featuring sample pours and food pairings. Bottle sales will be available at select Oregon liquor stores starting in December.

Firestone Walker’s XXVI Anniversary Ale

November 8, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Firestone WalkerPASO ROBLES, California – Firestone Walker unveiled “XXVI”—the latest edition of its storied Anniversary Ale, blended once again with the help of local winemakers.

“We’re talking about a ‘who’s who’ of Paso Robles winemakers,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “We’re fortunate to call them our neighbors and friends, and they never disappoint when it comes to our annual blending session.”

The result this year is XXVI—a masterwork of flavor and complexity, blended from six distinct ales aged in bourbon and brandy barrels, marking the brewery’s 26th anniversary.

“This latest Anniversary Ale is just super delicious and refined,” Brynildson said. “It’s driven by two barrel-aged stouts, but it’s much more than that. It has this perfect balancing point with a lot of spirits barrel character, and there’s an underlying freshness that elevates the mouthfeel.”

XXVI is rolling out now in limited quantities to all Firestone Walker markets, and is available at each brewery location and online at FirestoneBeer.com for a limited time.

An Annual Rite

Firestone Walker’s collaboration with local winemakers dates back to 2006, when Brynildson was tasked with creating the inaugural Anniversary Ale to mark the brewery’s 10th anniversary year.

“It’s a tall order to blend all of these distinct beers into a harmonious whole,” Brynildson said. “That’s why we bring in the winemakers—they are practicing experts in the art of blending.”

This year’s blending session marked the 17th occasion of this annual summer rite. As always, the winemakers broke into teams to create their own candidate blends from a variety of barrel-aged components. “We offered up a perfect spectrum of beers to choose

Next, the winemakers and brewers blind tasted all of the candidate blends, then voted as a group to crown the winner that would become XXVI.

XXVI: The Final Blend

“It was nice to have our classic Bravo brown ale back in the mix as a complement to our Parabola and Velvet Merkin stouts,” Brynildson said. “Heavy Things contributed a subtle dimension of brandy barrel character. Finally, Helldorado and Wheat Wine added a splash of freshness to the beer.”

Parabola – Aged in Bourbon Barrels (32%)

RussianImperial Stout

Velvet Merkin – Aged in Bourbon Barrels (32%) Milk Stout

Breckenridge Distillery Announces Ultimate Whiskey and Beer Collaboration With Breckenridge Brewery

November 5, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Breckenridge BreweryBRECKENRIDGE — Breckenridge Distillery, the ‘World’s Highest Distillery,’ and Breckenridge Brewery return this season for the second ever Buddy Pass, a unique barrel-exchange program to create a limited-edition Imperial Stout Cask Finish Whiskey and a Whiskey Barrel-Aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout Beer. After selling out last year’s inaugural limited release in Colorado, Buddy Pass has expanded nationwide, entering 10 new markets and will hit retailers starting Oct. 24.

Buddy Pass is a unique collaboration between two iconic Colorado brands that allows you to sip the best of barrel-aged beer and beer-aged whiskey. The collaboration begins with Breckenridge Brewery’s Imperial Oatmeal Stout beer aged in Breckenridge Distillery Bourbon barrels to imbue boozy flavors from the whiskey barrel. After the beer is sufficiently aged, the barrels are returned to Breckenridge Distillery where they are filled once again with the distillery’s award-winning whiskey and aged again for about a year.

The whiskey, Breckenridge Distillery’s Imperial Stout Cask Finish Whiskey, highlights notes from the Imperial Oatmeal Stout resulting in a 114.7 proof spirit dark and sultry with notes of cinnamon and oak and a light background of fresh orange zest and chocolate. Smooth abundant caramel and dark chocolate hit the palate first as a dry matured oak and bold cinnamon spice follow and ride out for a long dry, spicy finish. The whiskey has an ABV of 57.35% and an MSRP ranging from $49-$60, depending on the market.

The beer, Breckenridge Brewery’s barrel-aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout, is a quintessential “big beer.” With a velvety mouthfeel, this beer is meant to be sipped, not slammed. The Imperial Oatmeal Stout imparts notes of dark chocolate-covered cherries, espresso, and toffee; its time in the Breckenridge Distillery’s high-rye bourbon barrels imparts hints of caramel sweetness that take it to the next level.

Buddy Pass is a bold, boozy brew that is meant to be shared. The subsequent spirits and suds are a perfect marriage between the two treasured craft brands that both beer and whiskey lovers alike will enjoy.

Buddy Pass 2022 will be available in Colorado, Chicago, Southern California, Texas (Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio), New York City, South Florida, Upstate New York, Arizona, New Jersey, Atlanta, and the greater Washington D.C./Maryland/Delaware area. When both products are purchased together in the following markets, buyers can receive a $10 rebate: Southern Florida, Southern California, Arizona, Chicago, New Jersey, Maryland, and New York.

About Breckenridge Distillery

Founded in 2008, Breckenridge Distillery is the “World’s Highest Distillery” widely known for its award-winning blended bourbon whiskey, a high-rye mash American-style whiskey. As one of the most highly awarded craft bourbons in the U.S., Breckenridge Bourbon is proudly a 3x Icons of Whisky and 5x winner of Best American Blended winner at the World Whiskies Awards by Whisky Magazine and a 4x winner of Colorado Distillery of the Year by the New York International Spirits Competition. Most recently, Breckenridge Gin and PX Sherry Cask Finish Whiskey received Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In 2021, Breckenridge Gin was named the World’s Best Compound Gin at the World Gin Awards by Gin Magazine.

The Breckenridge Distillery is more than award-winning spirits, offering an immersive guest experience. Dine at their award-winning restaurant, enjoy show-stopping cocktails, learn about their highly awarded spirits with an in-depth tasting, and get an inside look at their active production facility. New to the distillery, guests have the opportunity to blend their own whiskey as they learn the inner workings of whiskey production.

Stormalong and Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company Release Hopped-Cider Collaboration

October 23, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Stormalong CiderSHERBORN, Massachusetts – Stormalong Cider, award-winning Massachusetts-based cidery, announced the release of IPC (India Pale Cider), a hopped cider made in collaboration with fellow local award-winning independent craft brewery, Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company. This is the first collaboration between the two Massachusetts-based companies.

This limited release cider features a blend of Gold Rush and Idared apples fermented with a Belgian saison yeast and dry-hopped with Mosaic and Simcoe Cryo hops. The result is a crisp 6.0% ABV cider with notes of citrus, floral, and tropical fruit enhanced by the hops

“As a cider maker our expertise is in apples, and brewers work with hops and grain,” said Shannon Edgar, founder of Stormalong Cider. “When we wanted to make a cider with hops, I went to our friends and talented team at Exhibit ‘A’ to help us work on finding a hop bill and approach for making hops shine in cider, while also keeping the fruit forward vibe of our cider in place. Yeast was also a consideration and we decided to use a Belgian Saison strain to also accentuate the hop flavors and blend the two worlds. It’s been awesome working with Matt and his crew and we look forward to another beer / cider project that we have been working on together as well slated for the Spring of 2023.”

“Our friends from Stormalong Cider joined us in the Exhibit ‘A’ taproom on a few occasions. We tasted through many ciders to determine the direction we wanted to go,” said Matthew Steinberg, Co-Founder and Head Brewer at Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company. “We knew we wanted the IPC to be relatively dry with a delicate acidity and discovered right away that the ciders fermented with Saison yeast would be a great fit with the hop character we planned to deliver. At Exhibit ‘A’ we use Cryo Hops in several of our hop forward beers. They deliver big bursts of aroma without the bitterness of traditional hops. Mosaic and Simcoe hops gave us the aromatic character we were looking for.”

IPC is gluten-free and made with carefully sourced local apples which are freshly pressed and fermented with care. No added sugars, concentrates, ‘natural’ flavors, or artificial ingredients. This cider is also made with Mosaic and Simcoe cryo hops sourced from the Pacific Northwest.  Only 100% real, whole ingredients.

It will be available for a limited time in 16oz can 4-packs at Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing’s Framingham, MA taproom and through distribution in select stores in Massachusetts.

About Stormalong Cider

Stormalong Cider, founded in 2014, is a Massachusetts-based craft cider company producing a wide range of ciders focused on apple quality and character. Using a blend of culinary and rare heirloom varieties, Stormalong ferments and ages its ciders with traditional and modern techniques showcasing the unique characteristics of these diverse apples. Fascinated and inspired by America’s robust hard cider lineage, Stormalong aims to showcase the diversity, flavor and quality of cider made with the right apples.

About Exhibit A Brewing Company

Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company is a local community focused craft brewery in Framingham, Massachusetts. At Exhibit ‘A’ Brewing Company, we believe that a beer is greater than the sum of its ingredients. It’s the place where you experience it, the memories you create with it, and most importantly the people you enjoy it with. It’s about a commitment to using local ingredients, providing a space where everyone feels welcome, and supporting their local community. That’s why each beer is an exhibit of our passion and commitment to where they come from. Enjoy your Exhibit ‘A’ beer with family and friends, because every great story begins with Exhibit ‘A’.

Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter Returns for Limited Time

October 9, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Yuengling

POTTSVILLE, Pennsylvania – D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., America’s Oldest Brewery, announced the highly anticipated return of its incredibly delicious beer collaboration with Hershey’s, America’s most beloved chocolate brand, for the fourth year in a row. The highly coveted Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter is now available in 6- and 12-pack bottles and on draft just in time to mark the official start of this year’s Halloween season.

The popular beer, which has grown significantly since its inception in 2019, is available for fans of legal drinking age throughout stores and restaurants everywhere Yuengling is sold, only while supplies last. “We continue to be amazed by the excitement our fans show for this special collaboration beer,” said Jennifer Yuengling, Vice President of Operations and 6th generation family member, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. “One of our top priorities is listening and staying connected to our fans, which is why we are so excited to bring back this fall-favorite that appeals to all drinkers looking for something special.”

Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter marked the first-ever beer collaboration for the two iconic Pennsylvania brands. The fan-favorite beer combines over 300 years of both brands’ Pennsylvania heritage. Back by overwhelmingly popular demand, the brand has developed a passionate following of adults looking to celebrate the most delicious holiday occasions in the fall and winter.  “This marks the fourth year of the most epic chocolate and beer collaboration. We couldn’t wait to put Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter back on the shelves for Yuengling- and Hershey’s-fans alike,” said Ernie Savo, President, The Hershey Licensing Company. “‘Tis the season for all things candy and chocolate, and what better way to celebrate than with this decadent, one-of-kind chocolate brew.”

At 4.7% ABV, Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter combines Yuengling’s 193-year-old Dark Brewed Porter recipe with the world-famous taste of Hershey’s chocolate. The limited-edition, seasonal beer uses Yuengling’s master brewing expertise to artfully blend Hershey’s decadent chocolate with caramel and dark roasted malts for a smooth, rich and delicious chocolaty finish. The beer pairs well with everything from barbequed and smoked meats to cheeses and desserts.
