Photo Credit: Lone Tree Brewing Company

Grab your crew, raise a pint, and let’s DOUBLE DOWN because Lone Tree Brewing’s Parker spot is turning TWO and throwing the kind of party that screams “Colorado craft beer good times”!

Back in early 2024, Lone Tree Brewing rolled into Parker and quickly turned their second home into the go-to neighborhood hangout. This spot isn’t just any taproom—it’s their pilot brewery playground for dreaming up new recipes, and it’s become a legit community hub faster than you can say “cheers!”

Candace Peterson, our Director of Tasting Rooms, sums it up perfectly: “We’re straight-up forever grateful to the Parker fam who’s welcomed us with open arms and made us feel like home. Shoutout to our killer bar crew who sling pints with smiles, and our brewers who grind daily to pour the best stuff possible. You all make the magic happen!”

So mark your calendars for Saturday, February 28—we’re going all-in from 11am to 8pm at Lone Tree Brewing Parker (18425 Pony Express Drive, Parker, CO 80134). Here’s the lineup to get your weekend buzzing:

  • Swing by early to score those sweet, limited-edition 2nd Anniversary glassware drops (they’re going fast—once they’re gone, poof!)
  • 1–4pm: Live tunes from the one and only Jon Ham—bring your dancing shoes (or just your nodding head)
  • All day long: Fuel up with grub from 2 Salty Sarges food truck
  • 1–4pm: Sweet s’mores action courtesy of S’MORES TIME (because beer + fire-roasted marshmallows = winning combo)
  • 5–8pm: Channel your inner high-roller with games like blackjack and roulette
  • 7–9pm: Wrap the night with epic Music Bingo—test your playlist knowledge while sipping

It’s all open to the public, so rally the squad, bring your buddies, and come celebrate two years of great beer, great vibes, and even greater people.

Oh, and the star of the show? A special small-batch return of our beloved Wee Heavy—that rich, malty Scotch Ale beast that’s always a fan favorite. Pouring fresh just for the occasion!

Lone Tree Brewing kicked things off as the OG brewery in Lone Tree back in 2011, and we’ve been slinging stylistically diverse, crushable beers ever since. From our flagship spot near Park Meadows Mall to our Parker outpost, we’re all about growing friends over pints. Grab our cans or drafts in Colorado and Kansas—perfect for backyard hangs with your crew.

See you on the 28th—let’s make it a legendary one!

About Lone Tree Brewing:
Tree Brewing Company has been a beloved staple in Colorado’s craft beer scene since opening its doors in 2011 as the first brewery in Lone Tree, located in Denver’s vibrant South Metro area. Nestled conveniently near Park Meadows Mall off Park Meadows Drive, this independent, neighborhood-focused spot crafts a diverse lineup of hand-crafted beers, from crisp lagers and rich stouts to flavorful reds and innovative seasonal releases. With a strong emphasis on community, the tasting room welcomes families, furry friends (it’s one of the few Denver-area breweries that allows dogs inside), and locals alike for events like trivia nights, running club meetups, Brewery Bootcamp workouts, and nonprofit support. Whether you’re grabbing a pint of their flagship favorites or exploring limited releases, Lone Tree Brewing delivers approachable, high-quality brews rooted in Colorado’s love for great beer and good company.

Expanding its reach while staying true to its roots, Lone Tree Brewing now operates two welcoming locations, including a thriving satellite taproom in nearby Parker that serves as a hub for recipe innovation and community gatherings. Visitors rave about the relaxed, family-friendly vibe, excellent beer selection that appeals to every palate, and the perfect environment for unwinding after a day of exploring the area. From year-round core offerings to creative specials like stout month highlights, Lone Tree continues to build loyal fans through consistent quality, engaging events, and a genuine commitment to the South Denver communities it calls home—making it an essential stop for anyone seeking authentic Colorado craft beer experiences.

Highland Brewing Rings in the Year of the Fire Horse with Epic Lunar New Year Vibes, Special AAPI-Brewed Releases & Community Magic

February 19, 2026 by Dustin Scoggins

Highland Brewing Co. Debuts Rebrand - The Beer Connoisseur®

Hey craft beer fam—ready to kick off 2026’s Year of the Fire Horse (think bold energy, blazing speed, good fortune, and straight-up resilience) the right way? Grab your crew and head to Highland Brewing in Asheville, NC’s hilltop oasis for a weekend-long Lunar New Year blowout that’s equal parts heritage celebration, hoppy goodness, and unbreakable community spirit!

Founded in 1994 by Chinese-Jamaican immigrant and engineering legend Oscar Wong (yep, he started Asheville’s craft beer revolution!), Highland has been pouring award-winners like the iconic Gaelic Ale (that original amber legend), juicy Highland Haze IPA, and chill Daycation series for over 30 years. As a proud Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI)-led, family-owned, woman-led brewery (shoutout to President/CEO Leah Wong Ashburn, Oscar’s daughter), they’re all about blending roots, innovation, and killer pints.

This year’s festivities hit extra hard—coming off Hurricane Helene’s tough 2024 aftermath, where Highland stepped up BIG: raising $13K+ for hospitality workers, turning their taproom/warehouse into a relief hub, and keeping the community hydrated and fed. Now, a year+ later, the Lunar New Year toast is all about new beginnings, good luck, and bouncing back stronger—Fire Horse style!

Leah Wong Ashburn nails it: “Lunar New Year is about gathering with friends and family over traditions and flavors we love. We’re honoring our roots as Asheville’s OG craft brewery, celebrating the community’s grit over the past year and a half, and sharing joy, fresh starts, and good vibes with everyone.”
Star of the Show: Fire Horse Chocolate Porter

Highland’s back with their annual coast-to-coast collab with Seattle’s Asian-owned Lucky Envelope Brewing—this rich, roasty Fire Horse Chocolate Porter brings deep dark chocolate vibes, layered malts, a touch of smoked sea salt + cinnamon magic, and a warm, bold finish that screams Fire Horse energy. Limited and legendary—don’t sleep on it!
Weekend Highlights – Feb 21-22 at Highland’s 40-Acre Hilltop Campus

Saturday, Feb 21: Taproom & Event Center transformation (11am–3pm-ish vibes) with live dragon dance performances, food trucks rolling, family-friendly fun, and the on-site-only drop of four special Lunar New Year brews in a festive flight:

Fire Horse Chocolate Porter (the collab hero)
Luck Red Ale
Good Fortune Rice Lager
Joy Wheat Ale with lemongrass & ginger

Evening glow-up: Glow-in-the-Dark Disc Golf Tournament (6-9pm) on the course—think neon discs, prizes (including Fire Horse bottles!), and pure fun under the lights.
Sunday, Feb 22: Epic Dim Sum Brunch with Chef J Chong (J Chong Eats, Big Brunch finalist)—a modern twist on classic dim sum dishes symbolizing prosperity, luck, longevity, and happiness, perfectly paired with Highland beers.

This is more than beer—it’s a vibrant, inclusive festival celebrating Asian brewing heritage (Asia’s been brewing since ~7000 BCE, yet only ~2% of U.S. breweries are Asian-owned—Highland’s changing that narrative with flavor and heart!).
As the Southeast’s largest family-owned native brewery (distributing across NC, SC, TN, GA), Highland keeps it real: massive solar array for sustainability, tours, live music, and big expansions coming in 2026 (outdoor retail shop, rock-climbing gym, pizza spot—yes please!).
Swing by Highland Brewing’s campus, raise a pint to resilience and good fortune, and toast the Year of the Fire Horse with some of the best AAPI-brewed craft beer out there. See you on the hill—let’s make it epic! 🐎🔥🍻✨

About Highland Brewing

Highland Brewing pioneered Asheville’s craft scene in 1994, founded by retired engineer Oscar Wong. Since 2016, it’s been proudly woman-led by his daughter, Leah Wong Ashburn. As a minority-founded, family-owned powerhouse, they brew classics and innovate with sustainability (one of the largest solar setups in U.S. craft beer). Visit for limited releases, events, and good times—more upgrades on the way in 2026!

Depot Brewing Company: Reviving History One Pint at a Time in Morrow, Ohio

February 2, 2026 by Dow Scoggins

Depot Brewing Company: Reviving History One Pint at a Time in Morrow, Ohio
Nestled in the quaint village of Morrow, Ohio, Depot Brewing Company stands as a testament to the seamless blend of historical preservation and modern craft brewing. Housed in the village’s oldest building—a former railroad depot dating back to the mid-19th century—this brewery has quickly become a community hub since its opening in 2025. Founded by local residents Scott and Ashley Tilford, the establishment not only serves up innovative beers but also honors the rich heritage of its location, drawing visitors to Main Street and revitalizing the area.

The History of Depot Brewing Company
Depot Brewing Company’s story begins with a vision to transform a dormant piece of Morrow’s past into a vibrant gathering place. Scott Tilford, who playfully titles himself the “chief conductor,” and his wife Ashley, both longtime Morrow residents, saw potential in the historic train depot that had sat largely unused for years. The couple founded the brewery as a family affair, aiming to create a space where tradition meets modernity. After months of renovation that preserved the building’s original charm, the brewery held its grand opening on July 12, 2025.

The Tilfords’ mission is clear: to connect Morrow’s storied past with its promising future. Inspired by the depot’s role as a historical connector for travelers and goods, the brewery aspires to be a “beacon of connection” for the community and neighboring areas. Head brewer Taylor Dent collaborates closely with the owners to craft small-batch beers that reflect local history, ensuring each sip tells a story. Since opening, Depot Brewing has attracted locals and tourists alike, boosting foot traffic in Morrow and earning praise for its welcoming atmosphere and commitment to the village’s revitalization.

The Owners: Scott and Ashley Tilford
At the helm of Depot Brewing Company are Scott and Ashley Tilford, a husband-and-wife team deeply rooted in Morrow. Scott, the primary owner and self-proclaimed chief conductor, brings a passion for history and hospitality to the venture. He emphasizes exceptional service and community engagement, often sharing anecdotes about the depot’s past with patrons. Ashley complements this with her focus on creating a family-friendly environment, making the brewery a place for all ages to enjoy.

The Tilfords’ personal touch is evident throughout the operation. Tragically, the brewery’s founding was tinged with loss; Scott’s father, Mike, passed away on October 3, 2023, just as plans were taking shape. This inspired one of their signature beers, turning personal remembrance into a communal celebration. Their dedication has turned the brewery into more than a business—it’s a labor of love that honors family, history, and the tight-knit spirit of Morrow.

The Beers: A Toast to Morrow’s Heritage
Depot Brewing Company specializes in small-batch brews, each crafted to evoke the essence of Morrow’s history, from its railroad roots to iconic figures and events. The lineup is creative and thematic, with names that pay homage to the town’s past while delivering bold, flavorful profiles. Head brewer Taylor Dent ensures quality and variety, often collaborating with local ingredients and inspirations.

Here are some standout offerings from their current selection:

Lincoln Wuz Here (Lager): This rich, full-bodied lager commemorates Abraham Lincoln’s visit to the Morrow train station. It features malty earthy tones with a subtle sweetness, symbolizing strength, resilience, and camaraderie. It’s a fitting tribute to the 16th president’s enduring legacy and the town’s proud history.

49 Lots American IPA: 49 Lots IPA is not just a beer; it’s a storyteller, a homage to the foundations of our great town. Named after the original 49 lots that were platted as Morrow in 1845, 49 Lots IPA aims to evoke a sense of history, community, and anticipation.

Two Tracks Pilsner: A nod to the two railroad lines that once crisscrossed Morrow, this crisp, refreshing pilsner highlights clean flavors and a light body, perfect for casual sipping.

Ghosts Among Us Double IPA: Drawing on local lore and the “ghosts” of Morrow’s historical figures, this potent double IPA packs intense hop aromas and a robust bitterness, appealing to those seeking a stronger brew.

In addition to these core beers, the brewery offers a rotating selection of craft cocktails, wines, and non-alcoholic options, ensuring something for everyone. Food trucks and partnerships with local vendors complement the drinks, making Depot Brewing a full destination experience.

The History of the Railroad Station
The building that now houses Depot Brewing Company is Morrow’s historic train depot, a structure steeped in over 180 years of Ohio’s transportation legacy. Constructed around 1840, it served as a key stop on the Little Miami Railroad, one of the state’s earliest rail lines. Work on the railroad began in 1837 under the direction of Jeremiah Morrow, Ohio’s former governor and the railway’s first president (and the village’s namesake). By 1844, the line had reached Morrow, facilitating the transport of goods and passengers and spurring the town’s growth.

The depot’s early days saw it function not just as a passenger station but also as a freight depot, warehouse, and general store—making it a central hub for commerce. In 1853, a second line, known as the “Sheepskin Line,” was added, running from Morrow to Zanesville and further expanding connectivity.

One of the depot’s most famous moments came during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. Lincoln reportedly passed through Morrow on a train journey, an event that has become local legend and is commemorated in the brewery’s decor and beer names. The building witnessed the evolution of rail travel through the Civil War era and beyond, surviving floods, economic shifts, and the decline of passenger rail in the 20th century.

By the early 2000s, the depot had fallen into disuse, but community efforts preserved it as Morrow’s oldest standing structure. The Tilfords’ renovation in 2024-2025 breathed new life into it, maintaining original features like wooden beams and rail-era artifacts while adding modern brewing equipment. Today, it’s not just a brewery but a living museum, where visitors can sip a beer amid echoes of locomotives and presidential whistles.

Depot Brewing Company exemplifies how history can fuel innovation. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, history buff, or simply seeking a cozy spot in Warren County, this Morrow gem invites you to hop aboard and experience the journey. As Scott Tilford says, it’s about connecting the past to a brighter “toMorrow.”

Taste the Wild: Nature Calls Lager Brings Bear Scat to Your Pint Glass

January 29, 2026 by Dow Scoggins

The craft beer world just got a whole lot wilder — and smellier — with the launch of Nature Calls, a limited-edition lager from an unlikely duo: outdoor apparel giant Columbia Sportswear and Portland’s acclaimed Breakside Brewery.

Announced on January 28, 2026, this beer literally answers “nature’s call” in the most unexpected way possible. The crisp, clean-tasting lager incorporates an ingredient that’s probably never appeared on a brew sheet before: infused bear poop (from American black bears, collected trailside in Montana). Yes, you read that right — bear scat was used to flavor the brewing water during the process.

Don’t worry (too much): Columbia and Breakside emphasize that the final product is 100% safe to drink. It underwent the strictest brewing and sanitation standards in the industry, turning what could have been a gag into a legitimately consumable beer. The poop infusion is subtle — think of it more as a conceptual nod to the outdoors than an overpowering “wild” taste. The beer itself is described as a smooth, satisfying light lager with pleasant notes of honey and huckleberry, brewed using pure Bull Run River water (Portland’s famously clean supply), Pacific Northwest malted grains, and those signature fruity accents.

This isn’t just a random stunt. It ties directly into Columbia’s long-running “Engineered for Whatever” brand platform, which celebrates gear (and now apparently beverages) built to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at you — even if that includes literal bear droppings. As Columbia’s brand president Joe Boyle put it in promotional materials: “When we say engineered for whatever, we mean whatever. If Mother Nature hurls bear poop at us, we’ll ferment it into a frosty pint.”

Breakside Brewery founder Scott Lawrence echoed the surprise and enthusiasm: “We’ve brewed a lot of beers, but never one that celebrates nature this literally. When Columbia came to us with the idea to use bear poop, we thought they were joking. Turns out, they weren’t — and now we’ve got the wildest beer in America and maybe the world. It’s crazy, it’s fun, and honestly… it tastes great.”

The timing is no coincidence. Nature Calls is positioned as a “Big Game” beer, debuting just ahead of Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026. For the first time in company history, Columbia is getting in on the Super Bowl action — not with a TV ad, but with a physical presence at The Players Tailgate outside Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Attendees can head to the Columbia booth to sample the beer in person. Limited quantities will also be poured at Breakside’s taproom locations in Oregon for those closer to home.

In a sea of predictable light lagers and Super Bowl party staples, Nature Calls stands out as one of the boldest (and most literal) marketing plays in recent memory. It’s equal parts gross-out humor, outdoor authenticity, and craft beer creativity — the kind of release that sparks conversations, memes, and probably a few hesitant first sips.

Whether it’s a brilliant publicity coup or the most niche beer ever brewed, one thing is clear: Nature Calls has arrived, and it’s ready to make a splash (or at least a chuckle) this football season. Cheers to getting a real taste of the wild — just maybe don’t think too hard about the origin story while you’re drinking it.

About Breakside Brewery:
Nestled in the heart of Portland’s vibrant craft beer scene since 2010, Breakside Brewery has been pouring pure joy one pint at a time. What started as a cozy Northeast Portland brewpub has exploded into a regional powerhouse, cranking out 30,000+ barrels of innovative, award-sweeping beers each year across multiple lively locations—including Milwaukie, Slabtown, Lake Oswego, and even a coastal gem in Astoria. With a playful spirit and a relentless passion for experimentation, Breakside’s tap lists burst with crowd-pleasers like the crisp, hop-forward Breakside IPA (a multiple Great American Beer Festival medalist) alongside wild sours, juicy hazies, and seasonal surprises that keep beer geeks and casual sippers coming back for more. It’s the kind of place where every pour feels like a mini celebration of what great craft beer can be—bold, balanced, and ridiculously delicious.

And the best part? Breakside isn’t just brewing exceptional beer; they’re doing it as one of the country’s few employee-owned breweries since 2019, proving that when the team that makes the magic owns the magic, the results are downright electric. Multiple Brewery of the Year titles from the Oregon Beer Awards, a shower of medals at the World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival, and a reputation for beers that are as fun to discover as they are to drink—Breakside keeps raising the bar while keeping the vibe laid-back and welcoming. Whether you’re chasing that perfect hazy IPA, a barrel-aged stunner, or just a sunny patio session with friends, Breakside Brewery delivers the kind of craft beer adventure that makes any day feel like a toast-worthy occasion. Mothership Brewery Takes Flight: American Flatbread Burlington Hearth ’s On-Site Brewery Gets a Fresh, Earthy New Name

Mothership Brewery Takes Flight: American Flatbread Burlington Hearth ’s On-Site Brewery Gets a Fresh, Earthy New Name
Photo by American Flatbread Burlington Hearth

BURLINGTON, VT — After two decades of brewing magic at the iconic 115 Saint Paul Street spot inside American Flatbread Burlington Hearth, the cozy on-site brewery is stepping into a fresh chapter with a name that feels just right: Mothership Brewery. What started in 2004 as the birthplace of Zero Gravity Craft Brewery has grown, evolved, and now circles back to its humble roots. When Zero Gravity spread its wings and moved on in 2022, the little brewhouse stayed put—focusing on crafting approachable, food-friendly beers that pair perfectly with wood-fired pizzas, good company, and that classic Burlington vibe. Today, this “old soul” gets a new identity that’s grounded, earthy, and full of life.

The Mothership Brewery logo tells its own story: a peel-shaped design paying homage to American Flatbread’s rustic origins, featuring a mighty dandelion in full bloom. As a key pollinator, the dandelion offers early fuel for hummingbirds on their epic journeys—its florets stretching skyward while staying deeply rooted in the soil. Once it goes to seed, the cycle of renewal kicks in, mirroring the brewery’s commitment to regeneration and endless possibility. From day one, they’ve poured love into lagers and ales, and now they’re leaning into the lager love that’s sweeping the craft scene while keeping a diverse lineup of ales from around the globe—light and sessionable for sunny afternoons, dark and rich for cozy nights, always balanced and beer-nerd approved.

A big “hard launch” celebration is tentatively set for Wednesday, April 22—lining up perfectly with Earth Day to toast sustainability, community, and great beer. Swing by American Flatbread Burlington Hearth at 115 Saint Paul Street to cheers with the team, taste the rotating tap lineup (only available on-site), and soak in the historic apothecary building vibes. Follow the journey @mothership_flatbreadbtv on Instagram for updates, hours, full history, and more. Whether you’re a local legend or just passing through Burlington, Mothership Brewery is here to welcome you home—one pour at a time.

SweetWater Cranks It Up: Big Trip Double IPA Drops as the Bold, 9% Hop Bomb Sequel to Daytrip!

January 25, 2026 by Dow Scoggins

ATLANTA, GA — SweetWater Brewing just dropped the mic with Big Trip Double IPA—the bigger, bolder, hoppier sequel to everyone’s favorite road-trip sipper, Daytrip IPA.

Picture this: You loved the bright, juicy citrus vibes of Daytrip… now crank it up to 9% ABV and let your taste buds buckle up for the Big Trip. We’re talking explosive tropical aromas, smooth-as-hell citrus punch, and zero of that heavy, sticky malt bomb you sometimes get with imperial IPAs. It’s powerful, it’s drinkable, and it’s ready to send you on a flavor adventure without the hangover regrets (well… maybe a little one).

“Double IPAs are still crushing it as the #2 craft style down here in the Southeast,” says Evan Woolard, our Senior Brand Manager who’s basically living the dream. “Daytrip blew up because it’s hop-forward but easy to crush. So we said, ‘Let’s double down—more flavor, more ABV, more fun.’ Big Trip is all about that SweetWater magic: big taste that still goes down smooth, whether you’re a hop-head or just here for the good times.”

We loaded this beast with a killer hop squad—Mosaic, Idaho 7, Sultana, Citra, and El Dorado—for that juicy, tropical explosion, balanced on a clean base of 2-row, Pilsner, and wheat malts. No syrupy sweetness, just pure, refreshing hop bliss.
Grab it in 19.2 oz tall boys (because nothing says ‘weekend ready’ like a big can) or convenient 6-packs of 12 oz cans. It’s rolling out nationwide—hit up your local taproom, liquor store, grocery, corner gas station, wherever cold beer lives.

“Those big 19.2 oz cans are straight-up dominating the high-ABV game,” Evan adds with a grin. “Tall singles and six-packs make up like 80% of sales for stuff this strong in the Southeast, so we’re leaning all the way in. Big Trip builds right on Daytrip’s success and gives fans more of what they crave.”

Find Big Trip near you across the Southeast (and beyond)—check the SweetWater beer finder on the site. Swing by sweetwaterbrew.com for the full scoop, crack one open, and let’s toast to epic trips, big flavors, and zero regrets.

More about Sweetwater Brewing
SweetWater Brewing Company, Atlanta’s trailblazing craft beer powerhouse, traces its roots back to the early ’90s when founders Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney swapped college textbooks for keg-washing gigs in Colorado. Inspired by West Coast brewing vibes, they honed their skills at the American Brewers Guild before heading south to launch SweetWater in 1997—just in time for Atlanta’s Olympic buzz. Named after the scenic Sweetwater Creek, the brewery started small. Still, it grew hop by hop, expanding facilities in 2004, throwing its first 420 Fest in 2005, and cranking up production with a massive $19 million upgrade in 2012. Today, as part of Tilray Brands and ranking among the top 10 U.S. craft breweries, SweetWater champions waterway conservation through partnerships like the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, blending bold brews with an eco-friendly ethos for over 25 years of frothy innovation.

When it comes to SweetWater’s top beers, the legendary 420 Extra Pale Ale steals the show as the flagship sipper—a crisp, citrusy West Coast-style pale ale clocking in at 5.7% ABV, brewed on April 20, 1997, and packed with piney hops that keep fans coming back for more. Hot on its heels is the SweetWater IPA, a bold 6.3% ABV powerhouse bursting with grapefruit and tropical notes, alongside fan-favorites like the 420 Strain G13 IPA, a dank, resinous double IPA homage to cannabis culture at 6% ABV. Don’t miss seasonal stars like Blue, a refreshing blueberry wheat ale, or the newer Daytrip IPA and its high-octane sibling Big Trip Double IPA at 9% ABV—each delivering smooth, flavor-forward profiles that make SweetWater a go-to for craft enthusiasts craving that perfect pour.

Celebrating National English Toffee Day with Founders Backwoods Bastard: A Sweet Symphony in a Glass

January 8, 2026 by Dow Scoggins

Celebrating National English Toffee Day with Founders Backwoods Bastard: A Sweet Symphony in a GlassJanuary 8 marks National English Toffee Day, a delightful occasion dedicated to honoring one of America’s beloved confections. This day celebrates the rich, buttery sweetness of English toffee, a treat that has captivated taste buds for generations with its crunchy texture and caramelized flavors. While toffee itself might conjure images of sticky candies or indulgent desserts like sticky toffee pudding, it’s also a flavor profile that appears in unexpected places—like craft beer. Enter Founders Backwoods Bastard, a bourbon barrel-aged Scotch ale that captures toffee-like notes through its masterful brewing, making it an ideal “beer of the day” to toast this holiday.

The Origins and Joy of National English Toffee Day
National English Toffee Day, observed annually on January 8, shines a spotlight on the American variant of this classic British sweet. English toffee is traditionally made from sugar, butter, and often almonds or other nuts, cooked to a hard crack stage for that signature snap. Though its exact origins are murky, toffee has roots in 19th-century England, evolving into a staple treat in the U.S. where it’s often coated in chocolate for extra decadence. The day encourages indulgence—whether baking homemade batches, sharing store-bought favorites, or incorporating toffee into recipes like puddings and ice creams.

Celebrations are simple yet satisfying: Many mark the occasion by enjoying toffee in its purest form or experimenting with it in baked goods. It’s a reminder of how this humble candy brings warmth and nostalgia, especially during the winter months. For beer enthusiasts, extending the festivities to include brews with complementary flavors adds a modern twist, bridging the gap between confectionery and craft beverages.

Founders Backwoods Bastard: A Barrel-Aged Masterpiece
At the heart of today’s pairing is Founders Backwoods Bastard, a standout offering from Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This beer starts as the brewery’s flagship Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale—a robust, malty brew with an 8.5% ABV and rich sweetness from imported malts—but elevates it through aging in oak bourbon barrels for about a year. The result? A potent 11% ABV elixir with 50 IBUs, blending the warmth of Scotch ale with the nuanced depth of bourbon.

Key ingredients include Nugget and Willamette hops for a subtle earthy spice, alongside Abbey and Crystal malts that contribute to its deep caramel backbone. The barrel-aging process infuses oaky vanilla, whiskey undertones, and a smoky complexity, creating a sip that’s both bold and balanced. Tasters often note aromas of single malt scotch, roasted malts, dried fruits like figs, and a hint of dark fruit, all wrapped in a velvety mouthfeel. Available year-round in bottles and on draft, it’s earned a perfect 100 rating on RateBeer, cementing its status as a cult favorite since its debut around 2007.
Visually striking in its packaging, the beer pours a deep mahogany with a creamy head, inviting you to savor its layers.

The Toffee Connection: Where Beer Meets Candy
What ties Founders Backwoods Bastard to National English Toffee Day? It’s all in the flavor profile. While the beer doesn’t contain actual toffee, the Crystal malts and barrel aging impart prominent notes of sweet caramel and buttery richness—reminiscent of English toffee’s core essence. These toffee-like undertones mingle with vanilla and spice, evoking the sensation of biting into a piece of homemade toffee or drizzling caramel sauce over a warm pudding.

For an ultimate experience, pair a chilled glass of Backwoods Bastard with actual toffee treats. The beer’s warming alcohol and subtle smoke cut through the candy’s sweetness, creating a harmonious balance. Whether you’re a craft beer aficionado or a toffee lover, this combination elevates the holiday, proving that flavors can transcend categories.

As we raise a glass (or unwrap a candy) on this January 8, 2026, let’s appreciate how traditions like National English Toffee Day inspire creative pairings. Founders Backwoods Bastard isn’t just a beer—it’s a flavorful bridge to confectionery bliss, perfect for toasting the sweeter side of life.
