ShawneeCraft Brewing and Wallenpaupack Brewing Launch New Collaboration Beer Series

April 13, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

SHAWNEE ON DELAWARE, Pennsylvania— ShawneeCraft Brewing Company and Wallenpaupack Brewing Company launched a new collaboration beer series, Lakes & Rivers, on Thursday, April 6th, 2023. The first two beers in the series, an Imperial Pilsner and an Imperial Schwarzbier are available now in both brewery’s taprooms and through their distribution channels.

“This was all about the brewers from each brewery coming together to do something fun, and to learn from each other,” said Logan Ackerley, Head Brewer, Wallenpaupack Brewing Company. “We love brewing lagers, but we wanted to do something that was a little out of both of our comfort zones; something that would challenge us. We are super happy with the outcome; these beers are awesome.”

Speaking to how the partnership began, ShawneeCraft’s Head Brewer, Devin Vogel said, “both of our breweries recently received Silver Medals at last year’s US Open Beer Championship. Wallenpaupack medaled for their Hefeweizen and ShawneeCraft for our Belgian Wit – essentially the German and Belgian equivalents of the same classic wheat beer. That got us to thinking, we both make great beers – maybe we should do a collab.”

There are currently three beers in the Lakes & Rivers collaboration series: an Imperial Pilsner, an Imperial Schwarzbier, and a Barrel-Aged Imperial Schwarzbier. All three of these beers are “big” lagers – all with alcohol by volume (ABV) over 8.5% – something that is somewhat atypical for these two breweries who tend to focus more on session beers (lower ABV beers where multiple glasses can be enjoyed in one “session”), usually around 5% ABV or less.

“This whole process really came out of our brewing teams, who honestly just really like each other’s beers,” said ShawneeCraft Chief Operating Officer, Michael Albert. “This industry is all about collaborations. The more we work together, and strengthen each other’s work, the more people will shift away from mass-produced domestic brews towards locally brewed craft beer. It’s less about protecting proprietary info on our products, and more about creating great beer and great experiences as active and engaging members of our communities.”

“There is such a wealth of talented brewers in the Poconos, and we really subscribe to the high tides raising all ships mentality,” said Brad Beneski, Director of Business Administration and Development, Wallenpaupack Brewing Company. “So, getting to collaborate on such unique beers with another brewery that’s in our backyard was a no-brainer.”

Lakes & Rivers beers are available on tap, and in 16 oz cans in both ShawneeCraft and Wallenpaupack taprooms. The Lakes & Rivers Barrel-Aged Imperial Schwarzbier is anticipated to be available at the end of April.

Please drink responsibly!

Ska Brewing Is First North American Brewery To Implement CanCollar Corsair For Plastics Replacement In Its Packaging

April 13, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

DURANGO, Colorado— Ska Brewing has completed the installation of a CanCollar Corsair provided by WestRock. Ska is the first craft brewery in North America to implement this automation solution, which will enable the company’s transition from plastic rings to a fiber-based solution for its multipack product wraps.

Ska has never been keen on plastic packaging, but recently identified an alternative that supports its sustainability goals.

Enter WestRock, a global paper and packaging leader dedicated to sustainability whose portfolio includes solutions for craft and artisanal beverage producers. The company’s CanCollar Corsair machine automatically applies various CanCollar paperboard-based multipack formats to 24-pack trays of product, which gives Ska the ability to package all of its canned brand offerings — including four-packs and six-packs — using a solution that reduces plastics consumption by up to 95 percent when compared to alternative plastic multipack options.

“The CanCollar, which promotes circularity, will immediately reduce the amount of plastic Ska contributes to the environment by approximately four tons per year,” says Ska Brewing COO Steve Breezley. “This contributes to a reduction in overall waste and the carbon footprint associated with the shipping and storage of our products. The innovation, ethos and ethics behind this solution are what we’re all about.”

The installation of the CanCollar Corsair is one of Ska’s ongoing, never-finished efforts to build a more sustainable future,” says Co-Founder and CEO Dave Thibodeau. “We saw the opportunity to implement this fiber-based CanCollar and we’re jumping on it. We hope it will become the industry standard moving forward.”

From the choice of aluminum cans over bottles and the recycling of bowling alley lanes and old denim in the tasting room design, to the reduction of water consumption in the brewhouse and so many other initiatives to reduce waste, Ska Brewing has been a thought leader paving the way for environmental innovation over the course of its nearly 28 years in business. The brewery would love to share these strategies with anyone who asks.

Beer lovers can look for all of Ska’s canned brand offerings to sport recyclable fiber collars applied by the CanCollar Corsair on shelves starting in April.

Bavarian IPA is New Name for Chuckanut New World Ale

April 13, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

BURLINGTON, Washington – Once Chuckanut Brewery heard about the growing trend in the German craft brewing scene to use the name Bavarian IPA (BIPA) there was a realization that Chuckanut New World Hop Ale was just that. Using new world hops and malts from the Bavaria region in Germany Chuckanut’s New World has been renamed as Chuckanut Bavarian IPA (or BPA for short). The new German varietals, Calista and Ariana, hops are blended with Weyermann Pilsner & Barke Munich Malts to create an easy-drinking, aromatic IPA style of ale. Most traditional IPA styles were started in England and the USA but this new style comes out of Germany!

Bavarian IPA is a more subtle IPA than other IPA’s due to the use of German hops and the terroir that it imparts on the IPA style. The bitterness level is slight but the hops impart a citrusy flavor and aroma. BIPA is great with slow-roasted pork, bratwurst, veal or a fresh salad! Blonde in color, with a sessionable 5.1% ABV, Bavarian IPA is a great any-time of-day beer. Find it now at both Chuckanut locations and selected accounts in the NW on tap or in cans.

Chuckanut Brewery brews award winning Lagers and Ales and has won Large Brewery of the Year at WA BeerAwards 2017, 2019 and 2021 and Small Brewery at the GABF 2011. The production facility and Tap Room is in Skagit Valley at 11937 Higgins Airport Way, Burlington, WA. Chuckanut Brewery’s P. Nut Beer Hall is at 920 SE Caruthers St, Portland. Both locations welcome guests of all ages and have indoor and outdoor seating!

Sycamore Brewing Unveils Details of New Charlotte Taproom

April 12, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina –Sycamore Brewing, Charlotte’s biggest independent brewery, today unveiled details of its brand-new South End taproom, providing a destination for beer drinkers, families, foodies and now coffee lovers alike. Located at2151 Hawkins Street next door to Sycamore’s original taproom, the expansive 10,000 square-foot space is slated to open this May.

Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of North Carolina from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Carolina Coast, the taproom will span two stories with a 6,000-square-foot second-floor patio and bar overlooking Charlotte’s rail trail and city skyline. Complete with a ground-level beer garden, a full-service taproom with robust food offerings and the brewery’s new coffee shop – the space offers a 4-in-1 experience. Sycamore’s custom-built Airstream food truck will also be stationed upstairs as a nod to the original taproom space.

“At Sycamore Brewing, we believe in good times and great beer. That’s why we designed the brand-new taproom as a space not just for grabbing a drink but for kicking back, relaxing and connecting,” says Sycamore Brewing Owner Sarah Brigham. “Our bigger and better taproom has so much more to offer our customers including regular weekly specials, unique events and our new coffee shop. Its free-spirited aesthetic exudes a welcoming and laid-back vibe, and we look forward to welcoming everyone very soon!”

Located on the ground floor of the taproom, the new coffee shop Sycamore Café will serve house-brewed coffee, a selection of house-made cookies as well as pastries supplied by community bakers and chefs.

“We started to house roast small batches of our own coffee to add to select coffee beers, and we fell in love with the house-made cold brew coffee that went on tap at our production facility,” continued Brigham. “After perfecting our roasting process, we knew we had to make coffee a part of the new taproom and that’s how Sycamore coffee was born.”

Along with coffee and beer, the taproom will serve other beverage options including froze, cider, a curated wine list, cocktails on tap (some coffee inspired), boozy popsicles and beer floats with soft serve. Sycamore’s full food menu will include tasty pairings for featured beverages each week. Grab-n-go breakfast, lunch and dinner options will be available at the coffee shop or in the beer garden daily, and brunch will be offered on weekends. April 12, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

Astoria, QNS, NYC – The ultimate analog beer collab is brewing in honor of Record Store Day, 2023. QNS/NYC’s own SingleCut Beersmiths is teaming up with NYC’s premier record store and music venue, Rough Trade Records NYC, to brew a new double dry-hopped American Pale Ale celebrating independent record stores and the vibrant record store community.

Stylus DDH Pale Ale will be available at SingleCut Tap Rooms and at select retailers across NYC and the greater NY Metro Area. “The SingleCut brand is built on our adoration of music- it’s what inspires everything we brew and everything we do. Since day one, over ten years ago, every SingleCut brewery and tap room has been powered by our vinyl collections- curating, hunting, and discovering great new records is what we’re all about, so getting to team-up with an institution like Rough Trade is a vinyl nerd’s dream.”- SingleCut GM, Dan Bronson.

Chatham Brewing Creates New Look for the “Storm Series” IPAs

April 12, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

HUDSON VALLEY, New York – Chatham Brewing, Columbia County’s first and finest brewery in New York’s upper Hudson Valley, has spent all winter brewing up their Storm Series’ new look. This is the brewery’s first time relaunching an entire series of classic beers with a cohesive look, while also introducing one new brew to the batch.

The collection features five vibrant cans: Nor’ Eastah, one of Chatham Brewing’s most popular IPAs; Bombogenesis, loved by all as “Bombo,” a staple DIPA from the brewery; and three fruited/fruit forward Double IPAs (DIPA) popular with customers with the same hop profile as the classic Bombo: Mango, Pineapple, and one new addition to the collection.

Making its much-anticipated debut is Grapefruit Bombogenesis, a new release joining the Bombo family in cans later this April. Insiders have been filling growlers for the past month, singing its praises.

The cans’ colorful new look demands attention with eccentric storm tracker imagery and bold text. The label artwork speaks to the power and intensity of Upstate New York weather, a nod to the brewery’s roots while putting Chatham on the map. By paying tribute to the winter storms that impact the region, Chatham Brewing has crafted striking visuals for flavorful beers that not only maintain the same great taste, but also hold a special meaning for locals and visitors alike.

“We are thrilled to finally unveil the new look of the Storm Series,” said Tom Crowell, co-owner of Chatham Brewing. “It’s gratifying to know that our Nor’ Eastah and Bombo beers have resonated with our fans for years, so there was no need to change the taste of our classics. After months at the drawing board this winter, these label designs capture the essence of our craft and the power of winter storms, making them stand out on the shelves. We’re excited to add this new edition to the flavored Bombo lineup. With bright, fruit-forward flavors, Bombo Grapefruit fits right in with Bombo’s Mango and Pineapple DIPAs, while still bringing a unique and refreshing taste to the collection.”

Bombogenesis Grapefruit is a red grapefruit infused, double dry hopped (DDH) DIPA with Mosaic, Citra, and Simcoe hops. With fruited, fresh notes and an 8.5 percent ABV, Grapefruit joins Mango and Pineapple in time to become a summer season favorite.

Nor’ Eastah and Bombo are two long-time top sellers at the brewery, earning them year-round placement on the shelves. Available in cans since 2017, Nor’ Eastah is a popular unfiltered IPA with an ABV of 6.5 percent featuring Mosaic, Citra, and Simcoe hops. Bombogenesis Double IPA is brewed with the same hop profile as Nor’ Eastah and features an 8.5% ABV. The can’s first release coincided with the bombogenesis effect of Winter Storm Stella, which resulted in more than two feet of snow falling in and around the Hudson Valley.

Chatham Brewing offers a wide collection of year-round and seasonal craft beers and seltzers. Bombogenesis Mango and Bombogenesis Pineapple are cyclic with the warmer seasons but make returns throughout the year.

The Nor’ Eastah cans debuting the series’ new look are the first to hit the shelves, available now. The rest of the Storm Series collection’s cans can be found at local retailers, bars, and at Chatham Brewing later this season.

Bent Water Brewing Releases Common Hope for Parkinson’s Awareness Month

April 11, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

LYNN, Massachusetts— Bent Water Brewing Company, the award-winning brewery from Lynn, Massachusetts, this week will release Common Hope, a dry-hopped pilsner created to raise funds and awareness for research dedicated to ending Parkinson’s Disease.

The initiative, first launched in 2022 by Bent Water, was conceived as a nationwide collaboration that drew breweries from all over the country to participate, many of them with personal stories about Parkinson’s.

“Common Hope is incredibly important to us,” explained Aaron Reames, Co-founder and President, Bent Water Brewing. “Parkinson’s has affected multiple family members and friends of the brewery, including some people I’m very close with. Several of us have always spent our own time and money to help aid Parkinson’s awareness and research, but Common Hope has become a way for us to take a bigger, more formalized, step towards fighting this disease.”

This is the second year that Bent Water has committed to brewing Common Hope and donating a portion of proceeds from the sale of the beer to benefit Team Fox, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) grassroots fundraising community. It is a partnership between like-minded organizations that both sides are proud to continue.

“Our community of Team Fox supporters continuously inspire us with the many ways they creatively aid in Parkinson’s research,” said Maci Hanson, Associate Director of Team Fox at MJFF. “Today we’re getting closer than ever before to better treatments and cures that people and families urgently need. None of this is possible without the active support of our community, including our friends at Bent Water Brewing who share our common goal and hope for a world without Parkinson’s disease.”

Although Common Hope is a joint effort led by Bent Water Brewing and Team Fox, several of the breweries that participated in last year’s collaboration have already indicated that they will be brewing the beer again in 2023, increasing the amount of good that the beer will be able to do.

Public Coast Brewing Co. Introduces Special Spring Releases

April 11, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

CANNON BEACH, Oregon— Public Coast Brewing Co. has re-released two of its “special release” beers: Uncle Fred’s German Wheat and Stackstock Candy Cap Stout and added the latest collab beer with Big Dog’s Brewing Co.: Violent Violet Blueberry Double Hazy IPA respectively. Only available for a limited time, the three beers each provide a refreshing taste of the bounty of Oregon as we head into the spring and summer months.

“We’re excited to bring back two very special fan favorites and a new collab beer this season,” said Will Leroux, Public Coast’s head brewmaster. “Uncle Fred’s German Wheat beer, brewed in honor of our friend, Fred Bowman, is refreshing and full bodied, with just a dash more clove and banana than your mother’s famous muffins. Violent Violet lives up to its name, packed with fruity tartness which allows the fruit to shine through and pair well with the malts and slight bitterness. And our Stackstock Candy Cap Stout continues to be a crowd pleaser for mushroom foragers, foodies, and craft beer drinkers alike.”

Uncle Fred’s German Wheat beer, a 5.0% ABV, is brewed with at least 50 percent malted wheat and also includes lemon drop hops. This style of beer will be light in color and typically carries notes of banana and clove. Uncle Fred’s is an easy drinker, highly carbonated, bubbly, and refreshing.

Violent Violet Blueberry Double Hazy IPA is as luscious as it sounds, a 8.2% ABV, it’s a stronger take on a regular IPA – amplifying it with a bigger malt and hop profile. This beer contains fresh blueberries paired with extra hops and extra malt, which means it’s pretty EXTRA – extra fruity, extra hoppy, and extra hazy.

Stackstock Candy Cap Stout, a 5.8% ABV, highlights the bounty of the land by infusing a stout beer with Candy Cap mushrooms, the hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest. This beer contains notes of roast chocolate, coffee and dark fruit with the subtle taste of umami from the mushroom. Think maple, caramel and pralines – like a sticky bun.

All three releases are for sale on-tap and in cans at Public Coast’s brewpub in Cannon Beach.

On Fourth will also feature on-site parking for 20-30 vehicles as well as a sprawling, 8000 sq ft, two-story patio featuring a bar on each floor, two fire pits, mixed seating for up to 300 people, and a gorgeous view of downtown Columbus!

In keeping with our core mission of “sustainably crafted with purpose,” On Fourth’s patio will be accented by a cornucopia of plants, vines, and trees fed by an 1800 gallon retired fermenter turned rainwater collection tank to create a verdant oasis right in the middle of Downtown! 32 solar panels, thus far, have also been installed onto the roof, our facilities have been fitted with the ability to harvest our own fermentation-generated CO2 to push our beer, and artwork created from found and repurposed materials will be featured throughout the space.

We are absolutely thrilled to also announce our partnership with two amazing restaurants that will bring delicious and iconic culinary options to our On Fourth patrons. Bagel Street Deli, an Athens institution, will be opening its food cart on our patio space to offer a delectable selection of their quintessential bagelwiches. And, opening in June, from the Columbus Sultans of Sandwich, Wario’s Beef and Pork, comes a vibrant new concept offering a phenomenal menu that gives a colorful nod to Midwest traditions as well as the nostalgic fast food joints of yesteryear.

Initially, Jackie O’s On Fourth will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays beginning May 5th (3pm – 11pm), May 6th (3pm – 11pm), and May 7th (11am – 5pm) and will steadily be adding days and hours of operation as we move into the summer months. Additionally in July we will start procedures to begin operation of our 15-barrel brew house with plans to brew a lineup of exciting beers unique to Jackie O’s On Fourth!
