After a weekend full of tasting and judging, in the professional division, Flix Brewhouse in Carmel, Indiana was named both Grand Champion Brewery and Indiana Brewery of the year. Earlier in the week,  Flix Brewhouse won a Gold and two Bronze Medals at the 2019 U.S. Open Beer Championship.

Ontario breweries dominated the medal count with 57 golds, silvers, and bronzes, but British Columbia stole the spotlight as a powerhouse, snagging 49 medals (nearly a third of the 164 total) and proving the West Coast’s hazy, hop-forward mastery. Clifford Brewing Company from Hamilton, Ontario, was crowned Brewery of the Year for its killer lineup, including the silver-winning East Hamilton Lager, while the ultimate prize—Beer of the Year—went to Central City Brewers + Distillers’ Red Racer After Hours Pale Ale (BC), a bold, experimental pale that doubled as gold in its category and had hopheads buzzing for months. Other BC standouts included Steel & Oak’s gold-medal Dark Lager (a malty European-style beauty), Fernie Brewing’s Campout West Coast Pale (gold for its piney, citrus punch), and Strange Fellows’ Mistral (gold in wood- and barrel-aged beers for its funky, oaky depth). Third Eye Brewing and the U.S. Open Beer Championship partnered to set a world record for the largest beer float.

To celebrate National Stout Month, which is February, Kelly Montgomery from Third Eye Brewing and Dow Scoggins from the U.S. Open Beer Championship created the World’s Largest Beer Float using 9 liters(27 12oz cans) of Higher Purpose Milk Stout and 36 scoops of Graeter’s Vanilla Ice Cream. Kelly, a co-owner of Third Eye and the brewery’s head brewer, and Dow Scoggins, founder of the U.S. Open Beer Championships, which is based in Oxford, both always wanted to hold a world record. So, they both got to check off “Hold a world record” from their bucket list.

About the U.S. Open Beer Championship
The U.S. Open Beer Championship was founded in 2009 and judges more beer styles than any other competition in the world. The U.S. Open is also the only major beer competition to allow the gold medal winners of the AHA’s National Homebrew Competition to participate. The U.S. Open judging is held at the U.S. Open Event Center in Oxford, Ohio. The U.S. Open became the first beer competition to be held in its venue, a 6,000-square-foot Amish pole barn on a small farm. The barn consists of a judging area, a serving area, two 450-square-foot coolers, an office, and a nano brewery. About National Stout Month
National Stout Month, celebrated every February, is a tribute to one of craft beer’s most beloved and versatile styles: the stout. This month-long event invites breweries, bars, and beer enthusiasts across the United States to honor the rich, roasty, and often decadent flavors of stouts, from classic Irish dry stouts to innovative barrel-aged imperial stouts. Breweries often release special stout variants, host tap takeovers, and organize tasting events to showcase the style’s diversity, featuring flavors like coffee, chocolate, vanilla, or even experimental ingredients like chili or fruit. National Stout Month not only highlights the creativity of brewers but also brings communities together to savor these bold, comforting beers during the chilly winter season, making it a must-experience for craft beer lovers.

The 2019 Los Angeles International Beer Competition, held April 13-14 at the historic Fairplex in Pomona, was a suds-soaked showdown that drew over 1,000 entries from breweries worldwide across 100 categories, blind-judged by a panel of BJCP pros and industry vets to crown the globe’s top pours—from snappy German Pilsners and juicy West Coast IPAs to funky barrel-aged sours and roasty rye beers. San Diego breweries absolutely crushed it, snagging 71 medals (a record haul) including clean sweeps in American-Style Stout and Rye Beer categories, with standouts like Eppig Brewing’s Meister N. German Wheat Beer taking gold and Deft Brewing racking up six medals for their bold stouts and lagers. El Segundo Brewing Company’s Old Jetty claimed the ultimate Best of Show crown for its masterful amber lager, while locals like Angel City’s That Voodoo that Yuzu (gold in Wood and Barrel-Aged Sour) and Artifex’s Artifexican (gold in American-Style Cream Ale) proved SoCal’s craft scene was firing on all cylinders. Winners got prime real estate at the LA County Fair’s beer tavern, where thirsty crowds sampled medalists amid live music and food trucks—making this comp not just a judging fest, but a launchpad for shelf stars. The 2022 Great American Beer Festival (GABF), held in Denver, Colorado, marked its 40th anniversary as the nation’s premier beer competition and festival. Organized by the Brewers Association, the event celebrated the finest craft breweries in the United States, with the Brewery of the Year awards recognizing excellence across various production size categories. These awards, determined by points from medals won (gold: 6 points, silver: 5 points, bronze: 4 points), highlighted breweries that demonstrated consistent quality and innovation in their craft.

The 2022 GABF competition was the most competitive to date, with 9,904 entries from 2,154 breweries judged across 98 beer categories and 177 styles, including Collaboration and Pro-Am competitions. A panel of 235 beer experts from seven countries evaluated the entries over nine days, awarding 300 medals to 268 breweries. The Brewery of the Year awards were given in seven categories based on brewery size (measured by annual barrel production) and one for brewery groups, reflecting the diversity of the U.S. craft beer industry.

Nashville, Tennessee, hosted the 2018 World Beer Cup on May 3 at the Music City Center, where more than 2,500 breweries from 66 countries entered 8,234 beers across 101 style categories. Judged by 295 international experts over six days, the biennial competition—widely known as the “Olympics of Beer”—was organized by the Brewers Association to recognize brewing excellence. U.S. breweries dominated the awards, capturing 242 medals, ahead of Canada and Belgium.

Port City Brewing Co. of Virginia won Brewery of the Year in the medium-sized category, while California’s The Lost Abbey claimed the title for small breweries. Notable international medals included gold for Germany’s Greif Bräu Pils from Brauerei Greif and silver for Australia’s Hornet IPA from Black Hops Brewing. The ceremony concluded with brewers sharing stories and toasts, highlighting the global craft-beer community’s spirit of innovation and collaboration.
