BarrelHouse Brewing Co. Acquires Iconic Sherwood Field Hangar for Ambitious Expansion in Paso Robles

April 18, 2025 by Spencer Mapes

PASO ROBLES, CA — BarrelHouse Brewing Co., a cornerstone of Central Coast craft brewing, has acquired the historic Sherwood Field Hangar, marking a significant milestone in its growth. Located at the bustling intersection of Niblick and Creston Roads, this 10-acre site in East Paso Robles will soon transform into a vibrant hub for craft beer enthusiasts and the local community.

The newly dubbed “Hangar Project” signals an exciting new chapter for BarrelHouse Brewing Co. The expansive 100,000-square-foot facility will house a cutting-edge brewhouse, advanced packaging systems, and increased production capacity. By integrating sustainable technologies like solar power, water conservation systems, and CO2 recapture, BarrelHouse is committed to crafting exceptional beers while prioritizing environmental responsibility.

“We’re thrilled to bring our passion for great beer and community connection from Tin City to this incredible new space,” said Jason Carvalho, Owner and Founder of BarrelHouse Brewing Co. “The Hangar Project allows us to scale our operations while staying true to our values of quality, sustainability, and bringing people together.”

The Hangar Project’s five-year vision extends beyond brewing. BarrelHouse plans to create an open-market destination that celebrates Paso Robles’ rich culinary and artisanal culture. By partnering with local food vendors, artisans, and businesses, the reimagined 1940s hangar and its grounds will become a lively gathering place for families, friends, and visitors to enjoy premium food, drinks, and entertainment.

Steeped in history, the Sherwood Field Hangar was originally constructed in 1940 by the Army Corps of Engineers as a key Central Coast base for the U.S. Army Air Force and Navy during World War II. Post-war, it served as the operational hub for the Ennis Paper Company, employing generations of local families. BarrelHouse’s design plans will honor this legacy by incorporating vintage airplanes and printing presses into the space, creating a unique blend of history and modern innovation.

AleSmith Brewing Company Extends .394 Line with Session .394

April 18, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

SAN DIEGO, California – AleSmith Brewing Company is proud to announce the release of Session .394, a light, sessionable beer in cans and draft throughout San Diego. Following in the footsteps of their original .394 beer, collaboration with Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn, this rendition has a lower alcohol content while still packing all of the hop character you love. The light, easy-drinking beer is sure to be a hit with those looking for a lower alcohol option without sacrificing flavor.

This new release speaks to Tony Gwynn’s original vision of creating a beer that was both easy-drinking and full of flavor – one that could be enjoyed by everyone. It is this same vision that has guided AleSmith Brewing Co. since 1995 as they have grown into one of San Diego’s most beloved brewers who continue to honor Gwynn’s legacy through their .394 line.

Session .394 is a San Diego-style Session Pale Ale brewed with Mosaic and Citra hops giving it lovely notes of citrus and pineapple for an enjoyable drinking experience that transcends style boundaries. This crushable .394 embodies Tony Gwynn’s original vision of a beer that is “light with a kick.” Weighing in at 4.9% ABV, Session .394 will provide relief from heat during long summer days without sacrificing taste or quality.

“We are thrilled to extend our popular .394 product line with this lighter version,” said Brandon Richards, President of AleSmith Brewing Company. “As always, we believe in creating beers that represent the highest quality standard so drinkers can enjoy them no matter what their lifestyle or taste preference.”

“I am so proud of our ability to continue honoring Tony Gwynn and his legacy with this new version of .394,” said Peter Zien, Owner and CEO of AleSmith Brewing Company. “This version is an easy-drinking rendition that embodies Tony’s original vision of a full-flavored beer with a light body. It’s the perfect way to celebrate America’s favorite pastime in our hometown – San Diego!”

Session .394 will be available in cans and draft throughout San Diego beginning this month. East Brother Beer Company Announces New Core Beer to Award-Winning Lineup

April 14, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

RICHMOND, California – East Brother Beer Company announces its first new Core beer since inception! Joining the lineup of award-winning beers is East Brother’s Blonde Ale, a light-bodied easy-drinking beer that fits in perfectly with their classic approach. The Richmond, CA brewery has built a reputation for its unwavering commitment to brewing classic styles with precision, and the release of Blonde Ale is no exception. Taking inspiration from American beer culture that values beers everyone can enjoy, the brewery’s latest creation is a refreshing and approachable beer that will appeal to many and stand the test of time.

The Production team at East Brother Beer Company spent the past six months crafting the perfect recipe for the Blonde Ale, ensuring that it represents the best example of the beer style available today. The result is a crisp and clean ale with subtle malt sweetness and a dry finish, making it incredibly drinkable and perfect for any occasion. The beer is brewed with a combination of pilsner and wheat malts, which give it its light color and body, and is hopped with East Kent Goldings and Loral for a low to medium hop bitterness. It’s a sessionable beer that pairs well with sunshine and good company – summertime and the drinking is easy. East Brother Beer’s Blonde Ale is available now on draft throughout California, and will release in 16oz cans on April 17th.

“We’ve been thoughtful in our approach to growth and staying true to our mission to brew the classics. Bringing a Blonde to our Core lineup has been a labor of love for our team, and we’re confident that it will quickly become a favorite among all beer lovers,” said Chris Coomber, co-founder of East Brother Beer Company.

About East Brother Beer Company

Belching Beaver Brewery Adds Terpene-Focused Tropical Terps IPA To Core Lineup

April 6, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

OCEANSIDE, California— Oceanside’s Belching Beaver has added a core beer to its lineup called Tropical Terps IPA, a re-release of the brewery’s Dam Good Decade Terps IPA from its 10th anniversary celebration in October 2022. It is the company’s first core beer that uses terpenes, which are aromatic compounds naturally found in citrus fruits, pine trees, hops, and cannabis.

Tropical Terps IPA has a 6.6% alcohol-by-volume (ABV) and includes Simcoe, Mosaic, Strata, and Citra hops. Terpenes bring to the juicy IPA new flavors and aromas that are unattainable from hops alone, featuring tropical notes of melons, mango, guava, and pineapple. The terpenes used for the beer were not derived from cannabis.

“We received so many compliments last year from the initial batch of Brewmaster Troy Smith’s new brand that we decided to make it a part of our core,” said Co-Founder and CEO Tom Vogel. “Troy and his team are always pushing the boundaries of beer and they love creating new and amazing styles like with Tropical Terps. He not only designed the beer, but the label as well. This really is a game changer. I am sure we will see more terpene-focused beers throughout the country in the years ahead.”

Tropical Terps IPA is available on draft and in six packs of 12-ounce cans at Belching Beaver’s four San Diego County locations: Oceanside Brewhouse, Vista’s Pub980 and Tavern & Grill, and North Park Tasting Room.

“We are not the first brewery to do this, though not many have tried,” Smith said. “Since beer has been around for thousands of years, we are always trying to push the limits of what defines a good beer. Showcasing something new and innovative is the goal, and I believe both hard-core and casual beer drinkers will enjoy our latest creation that has flavors they may have never tasted before.”

Belching Beaver beers are distributed to 12 states outside of California, including as far away as Wisconsin and Texas. Head of Production and Quality Manager Thomas Peters, who joined the brewery in 2013, oversees all beer production at the company’s Oceanside manufacturing facility and four brewery/retail locations.
