AZ Wilderness Partners With Equality Maricopa to Make Arizona’s First LGBT License Plate a Reality

June 6, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PHOENIX, Arizona – Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. announced the launch of Prism, a prickly pear lager that will raise funds to create Arizona’s first LGBTQIA+ license plate.

The beer is being released in collaboration with Equality Maricopa, a resource group that supports LGBTQIA+ students and employees of the ten Maricopa Community Colleges across the Valley. Last year, Equality Maricopa began the push for Arizona to create a specialty license plate, proceeds from which would fund the PRISM Scholarship—a scholarship for LGBTQIA+ students—in perpetuity. If the license plate is adopted, Arizona will become one of the first states with an LGBTQIA+-themed license plate design.

To get the license plate produced, the organization needs to provide the state with $32,000, and they’re over halfway toward that goal. A percentage of the sales of Prism (the beer) will be donated to help them get the rest of the way.

Speaking of the beer: Named for the PRISM Scholarship, Prism is a delightfully fruit-forward lager brewed with Arizona-grown prickly pear. The label on each can includes an illustration of the proposed design of the license plate. Each can also includes a QR code with a link to make a direct donation to the PRISM Scholarship fund.

To celebrate the beer’s launch, Equality Maricopa will be hosting a happy hour at Arizona Wilderness’ DTPHX beer garden from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, June 10. A dollar from every pint of beer sold during the event will be donated to the license plate creation fund.

Whetstone Beer Co. Launches “Pints for Parks” Supporting VT State Parks

April 18, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

BRATTLEBORO, Vermont— “Brewing up adventure” isn’t just a motto for Whetstone Beer Co., it’s a way of life. Partners David Hiler, and Tim and Amy Brady were brought together by not just a love of beer, but also a love of adventure. Their years of exploring the beauty of Vermont State Parks has led them to launch the Pints for Parks project, a partnership benefitting Vermont State Parks through Vermont Parks Forever. Pints for Parks kicks off on May 6, at Jamaica State Park.

Pints for Parks is a collaboration between Whetstone Beer Co. and Vermont State Parks, where twice per year Whetstone will focus on a different State Park to create a unique, limited-edition beer celebrating that specific park. In addition, Whetstone will donate proceeds from all Pints for Parks beer to VT State Parks’ partner charity, Vermont Parks Forever.

“We are very excited about the Pints for Parks program and the opportunity to partner with Whetstone Beer Co. This program is a terrific way to celebrate Vermont’s amazing state park system and encourage folks to get outside” said Nate McKeen, Director of Vermont State Parks. “Whetstone is a terrific company to work with who understands the value of outdoor recreation and connecting people to the parks.”

The inaugural Pints for Parks launch celebration will take place on May 6th, 2023, from 12 pm to 4 pm at Jamaica State Park: 48 Salmon Hole Ln, Jamaica, VT 05343, with the release of a limited-edition Jamaica State Park Kolsch beer inspired by the park’s iconic Hamilton Falls, and the spring Whitewater Release on the West River.

“Jamaica State Park is the perfect park to showcase a Kolsch. This spring beer style is warm fermented – a nod to the tropical island which shares the park’s name – and cold conditioned like the West River which is fed by the park’s Hamilton Falls in springtime,” said Whetstone partner Tim Brady. “Somewhere between a lager and an ale, this Kolsch is well-balanced and subtle. It’s perfect for a warm spring day while relaxing after whitewater rafting or exploring your favorite state park. We couldn’t think of a more fitting brew to launch for our Pints for Parks program supporting all VT State Parks.”

“We are grateful for this creative partnership that will showcase Vermont’s beautiful state parks and raise awareness of Vermont Parks Forever (VPF), the foundation for Vermont’s state parks,” said Sarah Alberghini Winters, Executive Director, Vermont Parks Forever. “The support from Whetstone Beer Co. will bolster VPF’s efforts to expand nature education in the parks and provide more free entry through the Park Access Fund. LUKI Brewery to Unveil Sustainability Metrics and Release Beer with Sustainable Grain on Earth Day

April 17, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

ARVADA, Colorado – Operating a brewery uses a lot of natural resources. Since day one LUKI Brewery has designed and developed its processes to focus on responsible sustainability practices for breweries similar in size. For LUKI, self-reporting is the first step towards making sure that the brewery is performing at optimal levels.

“After almost three years, we feel it’s time to benchmark our efforts, and we’re happy to see results like our water usage,” says LUKI Co-Founder and Ringmaster Jeff Smith. “Breweries of our size use a median of 13 gallons of water to one gallon of beer out of the tap. In 2022, we had a 7-to-1 ratio, and will continue efforts to improve as we grow.”

The brewery’s self-reporting, which will be shared on April 22, is the kick-off to LUKI’s Earth Day celebration. The brewery has teamed up with Scraps Mile High, a compost pick-up service, to brew a beer using a sustainable grain called Kernza® from Sustain-A-Grain. This perennial grain grows year-round and has massive roots that help improve air, soil and water quality. Mobius Loop, a light Blonde Ale with a slightly sweet, nutty flavor, as well as a 5-gallon cask-version of the beer with local honey from the downtown Denver rooftop beehives at Civic Center Plaza, will tap at noon.

Sustainability practices can be a daunting task so LUKI has also invited the following vendors for an informational open house from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

  • Scraps Mile High: premiere compost pickup service
  • Homestead in the Hood: bringing hive fresh honey to your home
  • Rose Roots Community Garden: organic community garden
  • And more to come! Check LUKI’s website frequently for updates

Hip Hop and Funk Group, People In Between, will play two sets (3-4:30 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m.) and D’Toque Food Truck will be stationed at the brewery serving up delicious Salvadorian eats.

“Preserving natural resources has been in our DNA since back in our homebrewing days where we were coming up with ways to save and reuse as much water as possible,” says Smith. “So come and check out what we’re up to and learn how you can also take small steps to preserve our environment!”

About LUKI Brewery

Established in 2020, LUKI Brewery is a family and dog-friendly brewery located in Arvada, Colorado. Inspired by the Golden Era of the circus and harnessing familial ties with the Ringling Bros. that stem back to the 1920s, LUKI provides an array of beer styles and a space that provides entertainment, wonder and community. Welcome to the show.

Yazoo Brewing Brings Back Its Hop Project Series, With a Twist

April 17, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – To celebrate its 20th year of brewing in Nashville, Yazoo Brewing is bringing back a crowd favorite, its ever-evolving Hop Project series of IPAs, but with a new twist. The “Impy Hop Project” series will again focus on new trends and innovations in the world of hops, but at a higher abv of 7 %, and only on draft and in large-format 19.2 oz “stovepipe” cans.

“We ended our original Hop Project series when we decided we had found the perfect blend of hops, retiring it after eighty-six different variations over ten years”, said Linus Hall, co-owner of Yazoo Brewing. “But the world of hops has continued to evolve, with new varieties from all over the world – not only Oregon and Washington in the U.S., or Germany, or England, but places as far-flung as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Plus, new developments in yeast selections can bring amazing new flavors from traditional hops. We had so many new ideas that we decided to bring back the Hop Project series.”

But why in the 19.2 oz “stovepipe” cans? “We were getting a lot of interest in a locally-brewed, higher-abv IPA in 19.2 oz cans from our retail partners, who are seeing a growing demand for single-serve cans”, said Linus. “For now, that’s the package size we are going with. It’s a great package to pick up and share with a friend or two, without having to commit to buying a whole six-pack.”

Impy Hop Project, as Yazoo is calling the new series, will soon be available everywhere Yazoo is sold, but is initially rolling out in middle Tennessee area Kroger’s. Each batch will be a unique beer, with a QR code on the label leading to a description of the special blend of hops, or the novel process or ingredients that went into the creation.

About Yazoo Brewing

Yazoo Brewing has been producing local craft beer in Nashville since 2003, and takes pride in being a Nashville Original for the past 20 years. For more information, check out the Yazoo Brewing website, call 615-891-4649, or stop by the taproom at 900 River Bluff Dr, Madison, TN.

LEXINGTON, Kentucky— West Sixth Brewing, one of Kentucky’s largest and most established craft breweries, today announced the newest addition to its Seasonal Rotator series of beers.

Sun Shade Wheat is a 5% ABV light and sessionable American Wheat Ale. A sweet bready malt flavor is balanced by additions of orange peel to make this refreshing beer perfect for springtime sunshine. It is the first wheat ale that West Sixth has packaged in 6-pack cans since Lemongrass American Wheat.

“If you look at the weather forecast this week, it feels like Spring has finally arrived in Kentucky,” said Andy Smith, head brewer at West Sixth Brewing. “It’s the perfect time for an American Wheat Ale; light and refreshing but still carrying a solid malt backbone and character to back it up. Think of it as the beer you can drink on both those warm days and cool nights, gearing up for that transition into the hot summer months ahead.”

The Seasonal Rotator series also includes Good Beer, a classic lager, DankeChain Oktoberfest, and Packaway, a Vienna style lager. This is the first American Wheat to enter the series, and is expected to perform well.

“American Wheat Ales can be a little sneaky in terms of how they do in the market,” said Brady Barlow, co-founder at West Sixth Brewing. “Most IRI data you read will deliver the same news: IPAs are the kings and queens in the craft beer kingdom. But American Wheats do really well in stores. They’re accessible to a pretty broad range of consumers and meet somewhere in the middle of what many people are looking for in terms of flavor expectations.”

Sun Shade Wheat will be available on draught and six-packs to-go in the four West Sixth locations and out in the market starting this month. It is expected to be available through the end of July, at which point it will be replaced by the next installment in the Seasonal Rotator series, DankeChain.
