Beethoven & Beer – An Urban and Classical Collaboration

January 22, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Urban Artifact, Cincinnati-based craft brewer and tart & sour beer experts, to brew collaboration beer with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Starting with the Beethoven + Bartók concert on January 27, 2018, you will be able to find a special and unique collaboration at the concessions counters at Music Hall and the Northside taproom of Urban Artifact. The brewery, which has been brewing unique fruit beers since 2015, has collaborated with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra as they celebrate Beethoven’s groundbreaking symphonies in a special series “Beethoven Revolution” to be performed over three years. In a tribute to both the completion of the historic Music Hall renovation and the start of the #BeethovenRevolution series, Urban Artifact has brewed Plum Beethoven, a plum Midwest Fruit Tart (MWFT).

Urban Artifact utilizes only fresh fruit and spices in their signature MWFT style. Plums struck a chord with the brewing team as a way to balance tartness, support a rich yet delicate fruit flavor, and provide something unique to the concert-goers at Music Hall. Brewer George Burpee describes the beer: “Urban Artifact’s Plum Beethoven is a phonogram of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s experimentation of sound, made with 3,000 pounds of plums and Urban Artifact’s house lactobacillus culture. This beer uses traditional ingredients in its malt recipe but builds upon that with a daring amount of whole plums to create something that is truly Cincinnati’s own.”

The brewery has collaborated with other Ohio breweries, as well as other local landmarks, including The Museum Center at Union Terminal on a specialty beer in 2017. While Urban Artifact hosts live music nightly on their taproom stage, this is the first official collaboration with a music organization. “Collaborating with one of the greatest cultural institutions in Cincinnati is a dream” explained Scott Hand of Urban Artifact. “We’re honored to work with the CSO on a project to highlight one of the most influential composers in history.”
