Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey & Flying Dog Reunite to Create Special Limited Edition Whiskey and Beer

August 21, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Flying DogTo celebrate their shared history and commemorate their founder George Stranahan, Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey and Flying Dog Brewery created two new specialty products for what they call The Osopher project. Having collaborated over the years to share beer mash and barrels, The Osopher project marks the first joint product release for the two companies.

George Stranahan – astrophysicist, writer, photographer, entrepreneur, rancher, and philanthropist – founded the Flying Dog Brewpub in Aspen, Colorado in 1990, a decade after discovering the “flying dog” while on a mountaineering trip to K2, the world’s deadliest mountain. The Flying Dog brand expanded to become one of the top 50 production breweries in the U.S. and continues to this day to produce world-class beers at its brewery in Frederick, Maryland.

In 2004, George Stranahan and Jess Graber co-founded Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, Colorado’s first legal distillery since Prohibition in downtown Denver. The original Stranahan’s Whiskey utilized mash from Flying Dog’s Road Dog Porter. Today, Stranahan’s is the country’s leading American Single Malt whiskey and a fixture in Denver’s booming distilling scene.

The limited-edition beer created for The Osopher project is an imperial version of the original Road Dog Porter that has been aged in 10-year-old Stranahan’s Whiskey barrels. Road Dog was also the beginning of Flying Dog’s collaboration with the internationally renowned artist and friend of George Stranahan, Ralph Steadman, whose art continues to grace Flying Dog’s labels after more than a quarter century.

The result of barrel aging the porter is a velvety smooth explosion of chocolate, vanilla cream cocoa beans, toasted pecans, toffee, and maple. The surprising richness of all these flavors balances perfectly with the added notes of caramel, spice, and a hint of tobacco from the whiskey. After the imperial Road Dog Porter had aged to perfection in the Stranahan’s barrels, they were returned to Stranahan’s distillery in Colorado.

With the barrels, Stranahan’s created The Osopher, the oldest whiskey Stranahan’s has ever bottled. The Osopher stays true to both George Stranahan’s passion for creativity and the Stranahan’s distillery’s commitment to innovating American Single Malt Whiskey. The Osopher matured for four more months in the same barrels used to age Flying Dog’s Road Dog Porter, in addition to the 11 years it had already carefully aged at the distillery. The flavor profile consists of:

Nose: Coffee cake. Roasty malt mingles with toffee and barrel char

Palate: Dark chocolate caramels, sherried-soaked plums, and a dash of aged hops

Finish: Bread pudding and barley wine temper to a dry finish

“We’re excited to partner with Flying Dog Brewery and celebrate George Stranahan’s illustrious legacy with the release of The Osopher,” said Owen Martin, Head Distiller at Stranahan’s. “This release honors our storied past while showcasing our evolution. Both Stranahan’s and Flying Dog are committed to their craft, and the marriage of our whiskey and their brew creates flavor profiles bursting with complexity and passion.”

“The teams at Flying Dog and Stranahan’s loved the idea of commemorating George in a way that spoke to the art, science, and creativity that he instilled in both companies,” said Jim Caruso, CEO at Flying Dog Brewery. “George was a man of many talents, he considered himself a ‘pilgrimosopher,’ so The Osopher speaks to the idea that you can pursue anything if you’re just crazy enough to try it.”

The Osophers from both brands will feature the original Road Dog artwork by Ralph Steadman.

Stranahan’s The Osopher carries a 47.3% ABV and will be available in 750ml bottles at the Stranahan’s Distillery in Denver, Colorado for $159.99. Hand-bottled and packaged in a commemorative box, Flying Dog’s The Osopher carries a 12% ABV and will be available in limited-edition 750ml bottles at retail locations in Maryland only for $29.99. Consumers are encouraged to visit the brewery’s Beer Finder to locate inventory. Both products will have additional availability in the coming weeks.

About Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is a pioneering American single malt whiskey comprised of 100% malted barley and Rocky Mountain water, aged in new American white oak barrels. From grain to glass, Stranahan’s whiskey is distilled and bottled at its Colorado distillery, the state’s first legal distillery since Prohibition. Stranahan’s expressions include Original, Blue Peak, Sherry Cask, Diamond Peak, Mountain Angel 10 Year Old and the limited-edition yearly release: Snowflake. As one of the first and the best-selling American single malts, Stranahan’s is committed to building recognition and admiration for the category globally.

42 North Asks, ‘Where Else Would You Rather Beer?’

August 16, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

42 NorthBUFFALO, New York – In Western New York, there are only two seasons, summer and football.  And, as football season begins, so does the great tradition of tailgating in Buffalo.  To pay tribute to the lore and rituals of the Buffalo tailgate experience, 42 North Brewing is unveiling its new beer for the football season, “Where Else Would You Rather Beer?”.

“Where Else Would You Rather Beer?” is a light, approachable kolsch beer and, at 5% a.b.v., the perfect beer style to enjoy before, during, or after the game.   According to 42 North’s head brewer, Matt Matuszewski, “42 North chose a kolsch due to the growth of lagers in the craft segment, as well as the popularity of a few small batch kolsch offerings we have tested in the taproom”.

42 North “Where Else Would You Rather Beer?” can artwork features images of fans celebrating the camaraderie of the Buffalo tailgate experience.  For the first iteration of the label art, a number of 42 North’s loyal customers were featured.  The brewery does plan to continue to update the label graphics during the season to feature additional images of fans and their unique tailgate experiences.

“Where Else Would You Rather Beer?” will be launching in the 42 North taproom on Saturday, August 13th to coincide with the first preseason game of the year.  Beginning the week of August 15th, “Where Else Would You Rather Beer?” will be available throughout the Buffalo and Rochester markets wherever craft beer is sold.

Epic Brewing and Melvin Brewing Release Cross Country Chemists IPA

August 15, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Epic BrewingALPINE, Wyoming and SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Melvin Brewing out of Alpine, WY, and Epic Brewing out of Salt Lake City, Utah, have teamed up to release the stickiest and ickiest of beers, Cross Country Chemists IPA!  Cross Country Chemists was brewed using experimental techniques to evoke unique flavors from its specialty hops. And, it crossed with a vigorous dose of cannabis terpenes!

The brew teams at Melvin and Epic began talking about a collaboration brew in early 2022 with a meandering conversation about cannabis terpenes, Biotransformation, and an enzyme called Beta Glucosidase!?! “The brewers sounded like a bunch of mad scientists in the eyes of the rest of us,” said Gus Erickson, Marketing Specialist at Epic.

Cannabis Terpenes
-Cross Country Chemists was dosed with terpenes from the Grapefruit Kush strain, which has a high concentration of the Myrcene terpene. Myrcene is also found in hops and lemongrass, and it added a ton of fruitiness to the flavor and smell of the beer.

Biotransformation
-Biotransformation happens every time a beer goes through fermentation, particularly during High Kräusen – the peak of fermentation. High Kräusen is when the yeast is most active and behaves unpredictably when ingredients are introduced.

Beta Glucosidase (phantasm powder)
-β-Glucosidase is an enzyme, found in Sauvignon Blanc grapes from New Zealand, that induces biotransformation. When β-Glucosidase is introduced alongside hops, the hops emit *Thiols with pungent tropical fruit aromatics and flavors that cannot be achieved simply by **Dry Hopping. β-Glucosidase also enhances the beer by giving it a dry finish.
-*Thiols – Thiols are an organic compound that can be found in almost every living plant including hops and cannabis, which have highly aromatic thiols.
-**Dry Hop – A dry hop is when hops are added post-fermentation. The intention of a dry hop is to improve the beer’s floral & fruity aromatics/flavor.

Cross Country Chemists IPA, a dank and delicious IPA with Cannabis Terpenes, will be available at Epic Brewing in August. Grab a four-pack of 16oz cans today and remember to sip, sip, pass.

Lazy Dog Beer Club Taps Into Students at University Brew Programs to Develop Latest Quarterly Release

August 14, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Lazy Dog BeerFor the first time, Lazy Dog Beer Club, a quarterly membership subscription created by beer lovers, for beer lovers, sought out esteemed college university brew programs to help create the beers included in a quarterly release. The kit, dubbed “Mad Science,” includes an eight-pack of four unique 16-ounce beers, developed by four universities across the country. Lazy Dog Beer Club collaborated with Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.; University of California, Davis, in Davis, Calif.; University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.

Students utilized their brewing skills to create a recipe concept, brew a sample pilot batch, and consult with expert brew masters from major breweries. The students also worked with a professional illustrator to develop the can artwork and a beer name to match the theme. The “Mad Science” kit is available to qualified Lazy Dog Beer Club members starting mid-August and they will be informed by email when their kit is ready for pickup. Restaurant guests are also able to enjoy the current release beers on tap in the restaurant, while supplies last.

The “Mad Science” release includes the following beers:

“Spark of Genius” Extra Special Bitter + Tea // ABV: 5.5% // IBU: 26

Colorado State University’s Fermentation Science & Technology students created an extra special bitter ale with leaves of Earl Grey tea. The grist-English Pale malt, English Crystal 37, Munich and chocolate malts, plus the addition of English Earl Grey tea, bring a caramel sweetness and mild tannic bitterness to the beer.

About the School: Colorado State University’s Fermentation Science and Technology four-year degree program launched in 2013. More than 200 of their graduates now work for large and small brewers, distilleries, kombucha manufacturers, and other fermented food and beverage businesses.

“Liquid Gold” California Common // ABV: 5.1% // IBU: 31

University of California, Davis, students presented a California common-style beer that is an amber-colored malty discovery with herbaceous-floral notes. The recipe is a hybrid beer experiment, brewed like an ale but with lager yeast. The name was inspired by the local history of the San Francisco region during the California Gold Rush.

About the School: University of California, Davis, has one of the oldest brewing programs in the U.S., and a well-respected national and international reputation. The Department of Food Science & Technology has evolved from its origins at the UC Berkeley campus (in the Department of Viticulture and Enology and the Department of Dairy Industry).

“It’s ALIVE!” Single Hop IPA // ABV: 6.7% // IBU: 80

The University of South Florida in St. Petersburg developed an East Coast IPA that has peppery-citrus notes, thanks to the use of a single hop: the almighty Zeus. This medium-bodied brew lab masterpiece has an approachable, full IPA taste.

About the School: The University of South Florida’s Brewing Arts program started as a collaboration between local breweries and the professors at the school. The 23-week online program offers a Brewing Arts Certificate.

“Time Traveler” Dry-Hopped Belgian Ale// ABV: 7.9% // IBU: 35

The Fermentation Science Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., paired medieval Belgian super yeasts from the 5th century with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops from the 21st century to create Time Traveler, a dry-hopped Belgian ale. The pilsner and biscuit malts and corn sugar in the ingredients create a light, biscuity malt flavor with tropical fruit taste.

About the School: Southern Illinois University’s Bachelor of Science in Fermentation Science program was established in 2016. The school works to advance knowledge in fermentation, including the production and analysis of alcoholic beverages, fermented foods, and industrial fermentation. The campus offers a certified testing facility and student-run malthouse to help advance students’ knowledge in the field.

Lazy Dog Beer Club also donated to each of the schools for scholarships that will assist students pursuing careers in brewing professions.

“We’re so excited to partner with the next generation of brewers at each of these universities,” said John Williams, chief marketing officer for Lazy Dog Restaurant. “Each of the schools has excellent brewing programs, and every student and professor involved brought a unique perspective to the table. We can’t wait for our members and guests to have a taste.”

The beers are packaged in a carrier that weaves in fun laboratory-themed inspirations. A zine provides an overview of each school and beer style, plus tasting notes, ingredients, and suggested pairings for each beer.

The “Mad Science” collection was brewed in collaboration with Melvin Brewing. This release is only available to qualified Lazy Dog Beer Club members. Those interested in signing up for a Lazy Dog Beer Club membership can register online or at any Lazy Dog Restaurant in California, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, or Texas. Lone Tree Pilsner and Oktoberfest Cans Hit Colorado Shelves

August 13, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Lone Tree BrewingLONE TREE, Colorado – Lone Tree Brewing Company recently released two small-batch German-style lagers in cans, both available across Colorado while supplies last.

First up is the return of Pilsner cans. This classic style is one of the crowd favorites to come out of Lone Tree’s lager program. Its crispness differentiates it from the company flagship Mexican Lager, and makes for a quenching, repeatable summer beer at only 5.3% ABV. Pilsner malt and two additions of Hallertau hops comprise this simple recipe brewed to traditional German-style.

Next up, Oktoberfest, is another Lone Tree draft-turned-canned recipe. This 5.5% ABV malt-forward, amber-colored lager has a rich toasty, bready flavor, minimal bitterness, and a dry finish. Like Pilsner, it’s a recipe inspired by Head Brewer Dennis O’Harrow’s time across the pond.

Lone Tree Pilsner and Oktoberfest are available on tap at bars and restaurants and in canned 6-packs across Colorado. Brewery visitors can also taste these beers on tap and purchase 6-packs or Crowlers to-go, all while supplies last.

ABOUT LONE TREE BREWING CO.

Lone Tree Brewing Company was the first brewery to open in Lone Tree, Colorado in Denver’s South Metro area in 2011, and has remained a local staple for a decade. Lone Tree creates community around a stylistically diverse lineup of flagship, seasonal, and limited release beers that are sold in cans and on draft across Colorado, and in select locations in Kansas.

This All-Female, Japanese-Brazilian Brewery is Bringing its Craft to the United States

August 13, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

JapasSÃO PAULO, Brazil – This month Japas Cervejaria Co-Founders Maíra Kimura, Yumi Shimada, and Fernanda Ueno will travel the United States together for the first time on a whirlwind east-to-west coast trip that includes pop-up events, beer collaborations, and distributor meetings. This all-female, Nipo-Brazilian trio hopes to share their passion, craft and culture with the United States and beyond.

Nipo-Brazilians, or Japanese-Brazilians, are Brazilian born individuals with Japanese ancestry. Brazil is home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, stemming from Japanese emigration to Brazil in 1908 when the Japanese ship Kasato-Maru arrived in the port of Santos, south of São Paulo.

“Through Japas we got deeply connected with our ancestry and we got to know our past better. It also connected us more with our families as our lineage and history are proudly showcased in the beer,” says Kimura who also serves as a brewer and business strategist for Japas. “Through this process of beer-making, we learn about ourselves and about Japanese culture every day.”

“Japas” is slang that refers to those of Japanese descent. While the term can be permissible to some, Japas co-founders are clear that the term should only be used when given permission or in reference to the brewery. In harnessing the word and bringing it into the brand, the women of Japas are ressignifying and reappropriating “Japas” to showcase their pride in their origins and mixed cultures and translating that directly into their beer.

Every Japas beer tells a story – from an American Pale Ale with wasabi delicately added during the maturation of the beer, a refreshing sour with an addition of Yuzu, and notably, Kasato Maru, an IPA that honors the ship arriving in Brazil in 1908 that would launch future generations of immigrants, such as the families of Kimura, Shimada and Ueno; Kasato Maru features dekopon, a tangerine of Japanese origin that also arrived as an “immigrant” to brazil.

“We like to combine Japanese ingredients and concepts in our recipes whenever possible,” says Ueno who also serves as a brewer for Japas. “We are passionate about gastronomy and enjoy visiting restaurants and markets in our daily lives and travels, especially when in Japan so you can see these influences in our beer.”

Japas works with Beerternational, a woman-owned company and platform that helps brew, distribute and sell their beers in the U.S. Currently, Japas beer is in ten markets in the United States, including California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. As the women of Japas increase their reach through storytelling and beer, they hope to be champions for diversity in an industry that is particularly male-dominated.

“Our role is to raise awareness not only for our empowerment within feminism and Asian causes, but also to embrace all kinds of diversity that are often excluded,” says Shimada, who also serves as creative director for Japas. “Because we are women and Japanese-descendants in a world of white and male dominance, it is more important than ever to show that representation matters.”
