NA Hop Water Maker H2OPS Announces Brand Refresh

May 13, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

NA Hop WaterANAHEIM, California – After pioneering the craft brewed sparkling hop water category in 2014, H2OPS is announcing a brand refresh, moving their existing IPW trademark prominently to the front of the label and expanding into cans.  Co-founder Paul Tecker explained that “IPW is our refreshing take on an IPA that is a craft brewed hop Water you can drink Wherever, Whenever and Without alcohol, calories, or gluten. It’s also easier to pronounce than our company name H2OPS, which will remain on the label, but in a smaller way.”  The company is also debuting their Double Dry Hopped variety under the IPW brand, which they claim is bolder in flavor and more targeted to the non-alcoholic beer category. Tecker shared that “the IPW name came about organically from beer festival attendees tasting our festival only double dry hopped kegged version. The name stuck, so we decided to trademark it in 2018, but have waited to release this gem until we felt the hop water category was ready.”

Evolution and Segmentation

“The category has come a long way,” said Tecker. “When we first introduced H2OPS hop water in 2014 and for several years afterwards, it was a category of one, with distribution mostly in Whole Foods Markets in the California and Rocky Mountain regions. Today we are expanding nationally and seeing competition from large brewers and venture funded upstarts. The category is also segmenting. There are now caffeinated hop teas, functional hop waters and lower cost hop flavored seltzers. We are also seeing segmentation amongst those which are craft brewed and those which use natural flavors and hop extracts to try to replicate the taste of brewed hops. Our biased view is that those brands with simple ingredients and authentic craft brewed flavors will be the ones consumers gravitate to.”

“Overall, these new brands are exploring segments, offering consumer choice, and spreading awareness of this fast growing and vibrant category. We welcome our fellow innovators in helping to change the way the world enjoys hops.”

About H2OPS Inc.

H2OPS is the originator and pioneer of the non-alcoholic craft brewed hop water category and is on a mission to change the world by expanding the enjoyment of hops on more occasions.

The series of 11 talking bobblehead feature the Mobile, Alabama, native and Kansas City Monarchs legend who is considered the most famous player in the history of the Negro Leagues. The bobbleheads were produced in conjunction with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Missouri and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. A description of each bobblehead is below:

Hall Of Fame 1942 – Standing on a replica of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York, on a base bearing his name, Paige is wearing a 1942 Kansas City Monarchs home uniform and holding his Hall of Fame plaque. Kissing the Baseball – Standing on a baseball-shaped base bearing a replica of his autograph, the Paige bobblehead is kissing a baseball while wearing a white 1945 Kansas City Monarchs road uniform with Monarchs in gold across the chest and number 7 on the back. Paige, always ready to help the press, would often pose kissing the ball of the sport that made him famous. He is also wearing a blue cap with KC in gold. In the audio clip, Paige talks about how mastering control of his pitches led to success.

In the Dugout – Standing with his right foot on the top step of the dugout and his right arm resting on his knee, the smiling Paige bobblehead is wearing a 1946 Paige All-Stars uniform worn during his famous barnstorming tour against the Bob Feller All-Stars, the first tour during which teams were transported by airplane. He is also wearing a red cap with KC in white. In the audio clip, Judy Johnson talks about the great pitchers in the Negro Leagues.

Relaxing in a Rocking Chair – Sitting in a brown wooden rocking chair, the Paige bobblehead is wearing a 1947 Kansas City Monarchs jacket over his uniform. He is also wearing a blue cap with KC in white. Late in his career, Paige would add to his mystic by sitting in a rocking chair between innings in full view of the crowd. In the audio clip, Paige talks about his call up to the Cleveland Indians and batters opting not to bunt against him.

Signing Autographs – Standing on a base bearing a replica of Paige’s autograph, the Paige bobblehead, wearing a white uniform with Paige All-Stars across the chest in red trim with No. 25 on the back, is signing an autograph for a happy young fan. In the audio clip, Paige talks about how he got his nickname.

The well-traveled Paige was known for his longevity and attracting record crowds whenever he pitched. Larger-than-life thanks to his blistering fastball and legendary showboating, Paige dominated for four decades. In 1971, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as the first electee of the Negro Leagues Committee. In his debut MLB season in 1948 at the age of 42, Paige became the first player who had played in the Negro Leagues to pitch in the World Series as he helped the Cleveland Indians win the title. Paige is still considered to be the oldest rookie in Major League Baseball history.

After first playing for the semi-professional Mobile Tigers, his hometown team, from 1924-26, Paige began his professional career in 1926 with the Chattanooga Black Lookouts in 1926. During his career in the Negro Leagues, Paige played for the Birmingham Black Barons (1927-30), Baltimore Black Sox (1930), Cleveland Cubs (1931), Pittsburgh Crawfords (1932-34, 1936), Kansas City Monarchs (1935, 1939-47), New York Black Yankees (1941), Memphis Red Sox (1943) and Philadelphia Stars (1946 and 1950). He was a five-time All-Star and appeared in the uniforms of an estimated 100 teams.

After two seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Paige played with the St. Louis Browns for three seasons until age 47 and represented them in the All-Star Game in 1952 and 1953. In 1965 at age 59, Paige was signed by the Kansas City Athletics for one late-season game and limited the Boston Red Sox to one hit in three innings. Along with saying that he “thrilled millions of people and won hundreds of games,” his Hall of Fame plaque states, “His pitching was a legend among major league hitters.” In addition to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Paige was also inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1972.

Denny Foster, president of Main & Mill Brewing Company said, “We are so excited to get this first series of cans in everyone’s hands. The opportunity to work with Jay Caldwell from NegroLeaguesHistory.com, the Negro League Baseball Museum, the Paige family, and Graig Kreindler has been nothing short of incredible and we truly look forward to continuing this series in the years ahead. We are honored and proud to be a big part in this unique collaboration.”

“We are thrilled to unveil this special Satchel Paige Talking Baseball Bobblehead collection,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “This first-of-its-kind series of bobbleheads gives fans the opportunity to hear Paige and other Negro Leaguers talk about Paige’s amazing career in their very own collectible bobblehead.”

“Satchel Paige was not only one of the elite pitchers in all of baseball history, his power at the gate owing to his outgoing personality and showmanship are an often-overlooked aspect in integrating baseball in 1947,” said Jay Caldwell, founder of NegroLeaguesHistory.com. “Paige brought together integrated audiences to watch the best baseball players the Negro Leagues had to offer and demonstrated they were the equals of the Major Leagues.”

The Satchel Paige Talking Baseball Bobbleheads will be on display for the first time at an event being held at Oak & Steel Pub on Sunday May 15, 2022, at 3pm. In addition, NegroLeaguesHistory.com will be introducing the Negro Leagues Celebration Series beer featuring Satchel Paige at the event on the 15th. The beer is brewed by Main & Mill Brewery in Festus, MO. The Oak & Steel Pub is located at 120 W 17 St, Kansas City, MO 64108.

About the Negro Leagues

The first successful Negro League was founded by Rube Foster on February 13, 1920, at the Paseo YMCA in Kansas City. Foster believed an organized league structured like major league baseball would lead to eventual integration of the sport and racial reconciliation.  Foster did not live to see his dream come true. Others picked up his cause, and in 1947 Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color line.

About the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located at 170 S. 1st St. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened to the public on February 1st, 2019. The HOF and Museum also produces high quality, customized bobbleheads for retail sale as well as organizations, individuals, and teams across the country.

About the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) is the world’s only museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of African American baseball and its profound impact on the social advancement of America. The NLBM operates one block from the Paseo YMCA where Andrew “Rube” Foster founded the Negro National League in 1920. In 2006, the NLBM was designated as “America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum” by the United States Congress.

About Dreams Fulfilled

Dreams Fulfilled was organized to promote the Negro National League Centennial in 2020. Its founder, Jay Caldwell, was selected by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) as the primary exhibitor for an art and artifact exhibition at the museum between February 1 and May 31, 2020. That exhibit is being displayed again at the NLBM from May 6 – August 14, 2022. Dreams Fulfilled works with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to create a traveling exhibit featuring nearly 240 portraits of Negro Leagues players painted by Graig Kreindler.

Dogfish Head & Atlas Obscura’s Gastro Obscura Collaborate For Craft Beer Experiment

May 11, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Dogfish HeadMILTON, Delaware – Dogfish Head Craft Brewery joins forces with Atlas Obscura’s food and drink vertical, Gastro Obscura, to launch a limited-edition, first-of-its-kind craft beer experiment: Fermentation Engastration. Unlike anything drinkers have ever tasted, Fermentation Engastration (10% ABV) draws inspiration from a collection of complex fermented beverages – a rose-scented sake, a Mid-Atlantic honey and date mead, a bittersweet hard cider, a fruity Muscat wine and a rustic farmhouse ale. The result? One eccentric, incomparable beverage that can only be described as the “Turducken” of the beer world.

Fermentation Engastration is brewed with a boatload of off-centered culinary ingredients, including barley, spelt, muscat grape juice concentrate, flaked rice, apple juice concentrate, honey rice syrup, date syrup, yeast, hops and rose petals. On the nose, this brewing innovation is bursting with classic spicy phenols, while the tasting experience packs an explosion of fruit character balanced by a slight sweetness. With only 1,000 (500ml) bottles made,Fermentation Engastration will be available for purchase at Dogfish Head’sMilton, Delaware, brewery, beginning Friday, May 6, as well as inselect U.S. states* from coast to coast via GiveThemBeer.com, beginning Friday, May 13, at 9 a.m. EST, while supplies last.

“Here at Dogfish Head, we’ve never been afraid to go against the grain with experimenting with unique, high quality culinary ingredients in our beers,” said Sam Calagione,Dogfish Head Founder & Brewer. “As brewers and ‘mad scientists’ of sorts, it’s always been a fascination of ours to deconstruct, reimagine and reassemble how drinkers experience each sip of a new beer. Our latest example of that thinking isFermentation Engastration, kind of like the ‘turducken’ of beer, which artfully melds a whole myriad of complex ideas and brewing concepts into one multi-layered drinking event.”

Originally brewed for Dogfish Head’s annual Weekend of Compelling Ales & Spirits, an off-centered food and beverage festival featuringGastro Obscura as this year’s featured guest, Fermentation Engastration seamlessly aligns with both the brewery andGastro Obscura’s missions. For Dogfish Head, Fermentation Engastration is a liquid representation of the brewery’s off-centered ethos, giving a loving nod to its history of pushing the boundaries of craft beer. As one of the world’s first modern craft breweries to brew beers with culinary ingredients outside the Reinheitsgebot, the German purity law stating beer can only be brewed with water, hops, barley and yeast,Dogfish Head prides itself on developing complex, diverse and adventurous craft beverages for drinkers looking to challenge the status quo, one sip at a time.

Similarly, Gastro Obscura encourages those with daring palettes to explore the world and its many wonders through the lens of food and drink. By sharing stories, hosting experiences and leading worldwide trips, Gastro Obscura strives to open folks’ minds (and stomachs) to new and exciting culinary experiences by unlocking their inner senses of wonder and curiosity.

“The curious minds at Atlas Obscura andDogfish Head share a common obsession with searching for the unusual in food and drink,” said Warren Webster,Atlas Obscura CEO. “We knew that anything could happen if we teamed up withDogfish Head, and sure enough we found magic in Fermentation Engastration.Like our partnership itself, this beer is proof that bringing together unexpected ingredients can yield wonderful results.”

A Delaware-based brand with Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, an off-centered brewpub, Chesapeake & Maine, Dogfish Head’s seafood and cocktail spot, Dogfish Inn, a beer-themed inn on the harbor, and Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, a production brewery and distillery featuring the Tasting Room & Kitchen and Dogfish Head Distilling Co., Dogfish Head is a supporter of the Independent Craft Brewing Seal, the definitive icon for American craft breweries to identify themselves to be independently-owned and carry the torch of transparency, brewing innovation and the freedom of choice originally forged by brewing community pioneers. Dogfish Head  sells beer in all 50 states and D.C.

20 Pennsylvania Veteran Breweries Join Together For Statewide Memorial Day Beer Release

May 11, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Pennsylvania VeteransPennsylvania – For a third year craft breweries from across Pennsylvania have joined together for the return of an all Pennsylvania Veterans beer collaboration. The beer is brewed by Pennsylvania Veterans in the support of Pennsylvania Veterans.

“Adapt And Overcome: Danger Zone Pale Ale” will release all throughout Pennsylvania on Memorial Day Weekend 2022 with proceeds of sales going directly to the Keystone Military Families organization.

Founded in 2002, Keystone Military Families was established with the goal of providing support for our deployed troops and their families. In 2010 they realized there was also a need for veteran support so they reorganized and expanded services. Located out of Shoemakersville, PA their mission is to support Pennsylvania military families every week with groceries, clothing, household items, furniture, and more while still shipping up to 100 care packages monthly and 10,000 Christmas stockings annually.

Not only is this a beer being produced by Pennsylvania veterans, but it will also include ingredients from Pennsylvania veteran-owned and operated businesses as well. Grain and malt for this beer will come from Deer Creek Malthouse in Glen Mills. While some of the hops being used for the beer have been produced by GEMS Farms Hops in Carlisle; both of which are veteran-owned businesses. To support the large volume of beer needed for this project the beer was brewed at Chatty Monks Brewing in Reading and Stone Bridge Brewing in Johnstown.

“Adapt And Overcome: Danger Zone” is a 6.3% Hazy Pale Ale brewed with Keystone Pale and Vienna malt. Strata and Triple Pearl hops were added at various points in the brew to offer consumers flavors and aroma of pineapple, papaya, melon, and berry with a dank and grassy finish. Malt character is supportive and crackery and balances out the subtle bitterness of this fluffy collaborative endeavor.

Bowen said, “We’ve had a lot of people asking for us to come to their state and we’re now at the stage that we can happily oblige them. We’re stoked to get on the shelves and into their hands.”
Evil Genius Co-Founder Trevor Hayward added, “Ohio and Michigan are home to some awesome beer drinking cities that are full of customers who have always wanted to try our beer. Evil Genius Beer will begin hitting shelves in Ohio’s metropolitan areas and surrounding suburbs this week and will be available in Michigan shortly thereafter over Memorial Day Weekend. In addition to independent bottle shops, Evil Genius will be available in Acme Fresh Market, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Giant-Eagle, and Discount Drug Mart. The brand plans to expand into more regional hotspots throughout the US in 2022.

Invictus Brewing Celebrates the Sun with New 1.7 Million Megawatts Summer Ale

May 10, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Invictus BrewingBLAINE, Minnesota – In coordination with the National Craft Brewer’s Conference being hosted in Minnesota, Invictus Brewing announced its newest beer, “1.7 Million Megawatts Summer Ale.” The beer celebrates Invictus Brewing’s new rooftop solar array and educates people that there’s still plenty of sunshine to harvest in the service territory of its electric cooperative, Connexus Energy.

The beer’s bright golden color and crisp flavor (5.0 ABV, 20 IBU) are balanced with a touch of local honey harvested from pollinator-friendly solar farms by Invictus’ beekeeping friends at Bare Honey.

“We founded Invictus Brewing with the mission of making great beer and being good stewards of our environment,” said Previn Solberg, Invictus Brewing founder and CEO. “With this beer, we’re celebrating how easy our electric cooperative, Connexus Energy, made it to go solar — and we want people to know there’s plenty of beer and sunshine to go around.”

In a recent letter to its members, Connexus Energy CEO Greg Ridderbusch and Board Chair Fran Bator wrote: “Saving costs while greening the grid, Connexus Energy is now locally harvesting over 20 megawatts, enough to power more than 2,800 homes. We also applaud members who express their commitment to greening the grid through energy conservation, investing in their own rooftop solar panels, or joining our new Renewable Energy Club. And not to worry, there is plenty left — more than 1.7 million megawatts of sunshine is delivered to our service territory most days.”

Ridderbusch provided more detail at the electric co-op’s April annual meeting, stating: “The transforming grid will be composed of many solutions, and we support our members’ innovation. And with our membership in MnSEIA, we signal to the qualified vendor community our welcome mat helping our members consider direct solar solutions. As an alternative, members may also enroll in our Renewable Energy Club, where for a nominal fee, Connexus greens all electricity delivered to your home or business.” Ridderbusch’s remarks, recorded and available online, were accompanied by maps showing the growth in rooftop solar in the co-op’s service territory from 2013 to 2022.

Connexus Energy is Minnesota’s largest electric co-op, among the 15 largest cooperative electric utilities nationwide and has been nationally recognized for its “perfect power” service reliability, grid innovation, as well as solar land-use practices. A map of Connexus Energy’s 960 square-mile service territory graces the side of the Invictus beer can. 960 sq miles multiplied by 800 watts per square meter, as calculated by futurist and clean energy investor Ramez Naam in a 2011 Scientific American article, results in the number that inspired the beer’s name. The choice of May 3 for the introduction date was chosen in a nod to President Jimmy Carter, who, in 1976, officially designated the day to celebrate solar energy.

May 10, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Lawson's Finest LiquidsWAITSFIELD, VERMONT – Lawson’s Finest Liquids is marching towards summer with the release of a specialty pilsner as refreshing as the season itself. Scrag Mountain Pils Salt & Lime, a salt and lime infused Czech-style pilsner, is now available for a limited time at retailers throughout Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Scrag Mountain Pils Salt & Lime is a limited-batch that puts a refreshing twist on the brewery’s popular year-round Czech-style pilsner, Scrag Mountain Pils. Both brews are named in honor of Waitsfield, Vermont’s town water source, an aquifer located beneath Scrag Mountain. At 4.8% ABV, Scrag Mountain Pils Salt & Lime is a thirst-quenching and approachable beer. Affectionately nicknamed “Scragarita,” the pilsner is available in four packs (16 oz. cans) until the end of July.

“Scrag Mountain Pils Salt & Lime is always a sign of summer, and we’re thrilled to bring it back to distribution,” said Sean Lawson, CEO and founding brewer of Lawson’s Finest Liquids. “We’re excited for our fans to enjoy a Scragaritato beat the summer heat.”

Scrag Mountain Pils Salt & Lime infuses the bright, refreshing qualities of a Czech pilsner with sea salt, fresh lime peel and lime juice to produce a well-balanced, crisp and tart flavor in every sip.

Scrag Mountain Pils Salt & Lime is the latest specialty beer that the Vermont-based brewery will release this year to its Northeast distribution territory. A new hop blend of Lawson’s Finest Super Session IPA will debut in June while Hopcelot, a renowned IPA brewed with eight different varieties of hops, will be released at the beginning of July.

Lazy Dog Beer ClubLazy Dog Beer Club, a quarterly membership subscription created by beer lovers, for beer lovers, introduces its 14th quarterly release: “The Spy Who Loved Beer.” The theme is inspired by top-secret missions, fun spy gadgets and the fast-paced, action-packed world of spies and secret agents.

Lazy Dog Beer Club teamed up with Ballast Point Brewing Co. in San Diego; Astronomy Aleworks in Henderson, Nev.; Claremont Craft Ales in Claremont, Calif.; and Prosperity Brewers in Boca Raton, Fla. Each brewery created its own spy-themed brew with a unique recipe and colorful beer can artwork featuring an agent on a mission. The “Spy Who Loved Beer” includes the following beers and storylines:

The Pale Royale

This soft and crisp hoppy pale ale with spruce tips has a floral finish paired with fruity aromatics and earthy undertones. The beer comes in at 5.0% ABV, but the spruce is the star here. About the Brewer: Ballast Point Brewing Co. is one of the fastest-growing craft beer companies in the U.S., with a beer portfolio that includes more than 50 different styles of beer. Their beer is distributed in select markets across the United States and internationally.

The Kölsch Initiative

About the Brewer: Astronomy Aleworks is brewing and serving beer in the famous “Artisan Booze District” of Henderson, Nev., and was founded by father-son duo Raymond and Matt Brady. They create works of fermented art using scientific principles inspired by space exploration, astronomy and zymurgy, the study of fermentation.

Stolen Plans

This West Coast red IPA has a rich maltiness that’s perfectly balanced with aromatic hops and a satisfying bitterness. It’s accompanied by earthy, piney undertones that give way to subtle citrus and berry aromas.

About the Brewer: Claremont Craft Ales was started in 2012 by husband-and-wife team Simon Brown and Emily Moultrie, along with the help of their cousins and business partners. They specialize in West Coast-style hoppy beers that are well-rounded and drinkable, but also have some interesting twists on the IPA.

Vanilla Villain

This vanilla cream ale boasts an abundant vanilla flavor, a lean, silky texture and a crisp finish. The balanced beer has a 5.6% ABV with CTZ, Centennial and Saaz hops rounding out the flavor.

About the Brewer: Located in Boca Raton, Fla., Prosperity Brewers utilizes Florida’s beach atmosphere to create classic beer styles with a tropical touch. Lazy Dog Restaurant opened its first Florida location in Boca Raton in October 2021, and this is the first Florida-based brewery in the Lazy Dog Beer Club program.

“We had so much fun working with the brewers to create ‘The Spy Who Loved Beer’ theme,” said John Williams, chief marketing officer for Lazy Dog Restaurant. “It’s so exciting to team up with amazing craft brewers across the country and see their creativity come to life.”

The beers are packaged in a carrier that weaves in the theme with exciting spy inspiration. A zine provides an overview of each brewer and beer style, plus tasting notes, ingredients, and suggested pairings for each beer. Throughout the campaign, members will be tasked with decoding ciphers and solving puzzles to gain intel on the release and access exclusive offers.

The “Spy Who Loved Beer” collection was brewed in collaboration with Melvin Brewing for most locations. This release is only available to qualified Lazy Dog Beer Club members. Those interested in signing up for a Lazy Dog Beer Club membership can register online, or at any Lazy Dog Restaurant in California, Nevada, Colorado, Florida, Virginia, Illinois or Texas.
